NEXT and NOW

We want to approach Early Access slightly differently to how others have done before. Instead of putting down a road map with a list of items and dates that we may or may not hit, we are going to list what we are working on NOW and what we plan to work on NEXT (you may have seen these lists if you are part of the Discord community).
The reason behind this is that game development isn’t always linear. Things may arise which will need our dedicate attention (such as the Time Trial bugs and !Error on start-up) and as a six-person team we may need to shift attention from one feature to tackle what had popped up. With our NOW and NEXT list, we can have a balance between more content, improved functionality, tweaks and fixes while also working on a console build (we know you’re all on Steam but our console friends would love to play Circuit Superstars as well).
Now if you don’t see something on our NOW or NEXT list doesn’t mean it’s not in the long-term plan. We have already had many suggestions put forward (either in the Steam Forum or in the Discord) and we really value hearing your ideas. Also, once we’re out of Early Access, the development doesn’t stop for Circuit Superstars, we will be looking at adding more content (some free, some paid for) once the base is in place.
Now without further ado here’s the current NOW and NEXT list:

NOW

- Ongoing work on console porting
- Foundational work for facilitating online play with friends
- New cars and tracks in development
- Arcade mode design revisions
- !Error on Startup Bug (investigating further)

NEXT

- Online Synchronisation improvements
- Player Reporting
- Investigate bug in which the car selected is not the one in-game.
- Further bug-fixing (Thank you for your reports!)

Have a lovely weekend at the racetrack, friends! Thank you for reading and if you want to talk more about this week’s update, please join the community on the official Discord to talk to other fans.

Early Access Update v.0.1.0

Ah, the sweet smell of spring:
Fresh air,
flowers,
new leaves on trees,
bees buzzing around,
and A HUGE PILE OF DUST
wait...what?!

That's right! Circuit Superstars Patch v.0.1.0 is here! We did some spring cleaning and then brought our first dirt track into the mix. We can’t wait to see you spin wheels and literally leave everyone in the dust… not to mention competing in the improved Time Trials, plus testing yourselves against our next iteration of AI in our NPC drivers!

CONTENT

New track: Interstate

Fiery rocks, orange sand and turquoise blue rivers frame Interstate! A fast and technical track located in the Grand Canyon packed with sections to master. Will you dare to dominate the Loose Cannon across the sandy roads? Will you cross the finish line driving as fast as a train? We sure hope you will!

Get ready for your suit, helmet and cars to get dusty… Off-road has come to Circuit Superstars!

New car: Agitator

What better companion to our new Interstate track than a true beast of the desert? The AGITATOR has landed in the paddock! While we can’t wait to see what you can do with this beast in its natural habitat, we are excited to see all of you racers travel the world in your new Supertruck.

New Helmet and Car Designs

Several new car and helmet livery designs have been added to the pool of content!

GAMEPLAY CHANGES & BUG FIXES

Time Trials

  • Leaderboards now immediately display updated times.
  • "Next ahead" and "Friend ahead" ghosts now generally update immediately upon completing a lap.
  • Times shown on leaderboards should now match the actual time of a ghost.
  • The name and time of the chosen ghost are now shown in the "fastest lap" display in the HUD.
  • The friends leaderboard no longer displays leaderboard positions.

AI Improvements

  • During race starts, AI incorporates into the racing line less abruptly.
  • Improvements to AI performance on all cars. The amount of improvement varies depending on each car.
  • Changed the way AI difficulty gets tuned to increase the consistency of AI performance between car categories.
  • Remapped difficulties for AI and expanded their performance range per difficulty level. This change creates a wider variety of performance, so players can progress through a difficulty rather than beat every AI or be beaten by all AI in a binary way.
  • Implemented AI Strategy. With this new strategy layer, AI drivers judge the race duration and their degradation to try and find an optimal pitting strategy. This change makes it easier to find an appropriate challenge when racing against AI with degradation enabled.
  • Degradation Adjustments
  • Lowered the influence that wheelspin has on tire degradation and fuel. This change was introduced to bring keyboard and gamepad competitiveness closer during races. Consequently, this change makes it less effective to modulate the throttle during a race to save fuel, but lifting and coasting should still yield the same results as it used to.
  • Tuned fuel and tire degradation values.
  • Improved tire degradation calculations to better reflect load on the tires. This change will reduce the degradation cars would get when wheelspin was a result of an unloaded suspension.

Other fixes:

  • Rumble not switching off after a race .
  • Online - Standings no longer flip when two cars cross a checkpoint with a small distance between them.
  • Added Bloom Settings to Video Settings.

Developer Note

Fellow racers, thank you so much for your support over the past month! Your feedback, experiences and reviews have been crucial to our ability to continue to build and improve Circuit Superstars. We love hearing about your experience, your ideas and seeing the content you create. We also love so much seeing a good community being built over on Discord. Infinite gratitude from OFG.

We are on to the next priorities, which we will share later today on a NOW / NEXT post on Discord, but for those who have been experiencing the ! Mark Crash/Unable to Start Game Error, please know that, while this is a Unity crash that we have little control over, we are keeping up with their versions and testing them as they come. As soon as we have a successful test, we will let you know. We hope that you get to try Circuit Superstars soon.

What do you think? Be sure to join the community and share your thoughts on the official Circuit Superstars Discord server via this link

Welcome to Circuit Superstars Early Access!!!

Hello all,

We’re so happy to announce the release of Circuit Superstars into Early Access and we’re extra elated for you to accompany us on our journey to full release. It’s been a bumpy road to get to this point but we’re on the home stretch now. We would like to take this moment to thank all of you for joining us on this road so far.

Within the Early Access version of Circuit Superstars, you’ll be able to race within scintillating game modes that we can’t wait for you to discover and sink your teeth into. And, yes, we will be adding more tracks and vehicles throughout the Early Access period and beyond. If you were lucky enough to have played the Steam Games Festival demo you will notice a couple of changes here and there (such as markers for the track and an updated handling model).

As this is Early Access there will be bugs. We are very much looking for your feedback to help us crush them. As is the nature of game development, some bugs might be harder to tackle than others, but we’ll be taking them on as and when we can, you should still be able to have a ton of fun with Circuit Superstars regardless. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

We would like to thank you all again for your support and feedback and just because we’re entering Early Access doesn’t mean we’ll be taking our foot off the throttle, as we’ve mentioned Circuit Superstars will only continue to grow. With your help and feedback, we will be looking to make the best racing game we can.

See you on the grid,
Original Fire Games

What more do we need to say?
Do you have a burning question that you want to put forward to Original Fire Games, the developers of Circuit Superstars? Here's your chance to ask it!

Be sure to set a reminder so Steam can automatically notify you based on your preferences.

We'll be starting at 7pm BST (11am PDT) on the 10th of October.

Circuit Superstars demo is available for a limited time only! (IS NOW OVER)

Hello race fans! It's been a while since we last spoke to you properly, and for that we're sorry, but we didn't want to announce anything until we could share solid plans. The Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition is a chance to do that, and it also gives us the perfect opportunity to share the event build of Circuit Superstars that we would have brought to various events around the world if, you know, the virus…

The first thing we want to say is – this demo was created specifically to take to game events, so while you’ll get a great feel for the game, there’s a pretty limited set of options that were designed for sample sessions of around 20 minutes or so. Obviously, there’s no actual time limit to how long you can play the demo for (although fair warning, it will only be available for download during the Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition and while you will be able to play it beyond that time if you’ve already got it, we will likely remove it in an update later on).

More details on what the demo does include, as well as a list of known issues, are posted below.

BUT - this is also a great chance to reveal what our wider plans are. When we announced Circuit Superstars as part of the Square Enix E3 show in 2019, we were working to a full, multi-platform release in 2020. Unfortunately, this isn’t possible, and we’ve come to the realization that there are key parts of the game which need wider testing before we can commit to locking them in. There were a few different paths for us to take in this direction, but ultimately we thought… who better to get that feedback from than our own community? So, to that end:

Circuit Superstars will be coming to Early Access in Q1 2021. We will announce a more specific date in the next few months along with more details on what to expect, but this allows us to really check what we’re releasing is up to everybody’s expectations – because, full transparency, this is the first game we’ve made as a team at Original Fire Games, and while at times that’s been quite scary, we also don’t want to compromise on quality. With that in mind, we’re very confident that the full, multi-platform release of the game will happen later in 2021.

So what are you waiting for? Grab the demo, start setting some lap times, and post them to the Discord channel to see how you compare with the rest of the community.
The Charming World of Motorsport is now close at hand, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Demo details:

*DISCLAIMER* The event demo was created some time ago from game builds that have now been superseded. All areas of the game have evolved since then, so while the demo is representative of how the finished game plays, you’ll notice quite a bit of polish once Early Access launches!

The event demo will feature two types of vehicle – the Vost and the Panther – for you to try out on the lovely Whistle Valley track. The primary game mode available is Time Trial, and you’ll be able to configure options around lap count, and if you wish to have tire degradation, fuel consumption and damage switched on. And yes, you will be able to make pit stops, should you choose! Additionally, if you have family members who’d also like to play, there’s up to 4-player local multiplayer available as well (with the option to use Steam Remote Play, more info here).

If you’re using keyboard rather than a controller, the key bindings are as follows:

Comma and period: change number of laps/degradation
Arrows, Enter, Backspace: Player 1 controls
WASD, Space, Esc: Player 2 controls

Known issues:

- Options - Audio SFX volume level does not change when lowering or disabling
- Options – Some settings changes do not persist through application reboot
- UI – All control UI displays as Xbox controller UI (this is a side-effect of this build being designed for live events that only use Xbox controllers)
- Gameplay - Respawning while getting repaired in the PIT causes the player to lose gas / reverse functionality until end of race

Circuit Superstars FAQ!

Hello Racers!

Since our E3 announcement we’ve been quietly working hard on Circuit Superstars and we’re aware we haven’t given away too much information about the game.

Today we’d like to let you in on some of the things we shared with press at our Gamescom behind closed doors hands-on, as well as answer some of your burning questions.

If we didn’t answer a question you had, don’t panic - we’ll have more exciting news and announcements to share in the near future!

What is Circuit Superstars?

Circuit Superstars is a top-down racing game with stylized visuals for PC and consoles.

It combines arcade-style racing with more realistic tactile driving physics, and brings together a whole range of racing styles and eras of motorsport - from 60s-inspired single-seaters to modern GTs.

When is it launching?

We haven’t announced the release date yet, but we can confirm that it is coming in 2020. Rest assured - we’ll make some noise when the date is revealed!

When will you have a public hands-on?

This will happen closer to launch, so make sure you follow @CircuitSUP on Twitter to stay up to date with all news regarding events, announcements and hands-on opportunities.

Does this game have online multiplayer?

Yes! It will support both online (up to 12 players) and local (up to 4 player split screen) multiplayer.

Is this a management sim game?

It is not. You’ll race in a solo league mode and multiplayer modes.

How many tracks will the game feature?

Circuit Superstars will feature 12 tracks at launch and we’ll continue to add more shortly after launch…and beyond!

Can you create a team?

You will be able to customie your vehicle with different colours (primary, secondary and tertiary) and decals, then in turn your ‘team’ (driver and pit crew) will also adapt this colour theme. In that way, you create your own racing brand.

Can you rename your driver?

Your driver name will be your Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch profile name.

Will there be a track editor?

We would love for the community to be able to edit tracks using our assets. Right now though, we are focused on making a polished and enjoyable game so unfortunately this isn’t an option for the time being.

How many cars will the game have?

We’re looking to add 1-3 cars per category, and there will be 12 categories at launch. We’ll announce all the different cars in the future!

Will there be a competitive mode, like ranks or ranked based seasoned leagues?

Circuit Superstars will feature casual and seasonal ranked online multiplayer. We’ll share more details on the structure of seasonal ranked in the future!

Are you adding power-ups into the game?

We are not.

Circuit Superstars is about precision and handling. We wanted to bring an element of real-world motorsport within the game and because of this we’re focusing on our different car category handling models.

However, we will have different types of track (dirt, tarmac and snow) as well as ramps and some other fun things!

Will it release on all platforms at the same time?

Yes! Circuit Superstars will launch on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Steam on the same day.

Will it be cross-play?

We would love for the game to be cross-play; however, we continue to investigate if this is possible.

Will there be leaderboards?

You’ll be able to see your friends’ best times for the tracks you’re racing in. The game will also prompt you during a race and tell you who’s beating your best lap time so you can try and beat their lap time there and then.

At the end of a race, players will be able to see a race leaderboard summarizing everyone’s best lap times.

The game will also feature global best lap time leaderboards to help players set challenging goals for themselves.

New Circuit Superstars gameplay!

Finally, we’d like to share a quick snippet of gameplay from the Pre-Alpha Gamescom build. Some of the key features highlighted in this video are:

  • Car degradation indicators, including car health, fuel amount and tire wear
  • Pit stop process
  • 4 player local split screen

And finally!

Come and join the Circuit Superstars Discord pit crew where you’ll be kept up to date with all the news about the game!
