Dev Diary 23rd May 2019 - Economic Rebalance

Based on player feedback, we have made better balancing the economy and the pace of growth in the game a prime priority, to this end we have released updates with a few major changes:

Household Costs and Property Revenue

We have balanced and tweaked the Household Costs a fair amount so that the issue of racing up classes automatically does not happen, and the player is faced with a more interesting challenge of managing their income much more strategically for growth.

We have also balanced the costs and revenues of most Property types to this end

Market Events

We have subdued the effect of market events a little so that the deals offered are now in the 0.75x to 1.25x range which I feel gives a fair chance to still secure good deals while not being as heavily exploitable as before

Stewardship's effect on Property and Cash

We have introduced a soft cap on the number of items of each property type that you can effectively profit off based on the Stewardship skill of your household. The higher your effective household stewardship, more the property you can own, manage and profit from. This should better reflect the reality of having to actively manage property to turn a profit.

The way the calculation works is it takes your Paterfamilias Stewardship skill at full value, his wife's Stewardship at half value, the Stewardship of his children over the age of 7 at a quarter value and that of everyone else in your household at one-eight's value. It ignores the Stewardship of any characters that are busy doing something else like say studying philosophy in Greece.

Similarly we now also have a cap on the amount of cash you can hoard, based again on the same Stewardship and Class calculation. The cap is high enough that you shouldn't be hitting it until you reach a fairly high class. Any cash you earn over this limit will be wasted.

We will be adding alternative places to spend your cash other than Festivals and Elections in the upcoming updates

What's next

These changes and the numbers behind them will continue to be balanced, especially with your input. I understand that this change may make the game a bit harder for most people, but I am hoping it will continue to be challenging enough to be fun. If you're finding that it is cutting down on your enjoyment of the game or if you find that the challenge it presents is too punitive, please do let me know; as I said we are continuing to test and balance it further for the game to be fun while also challenging.

We are working on and will soon be releasing an update with more Senate interactions, followed by updates centered around Rome's wars and expansion and the Roman Client-Patron system. Release, Pricing and Roadmap : Citizen of Rome - Dynasty Ascendant

Release

We are going to be releasing Citizen of Rome - Dynasty Ascendant on Steam a bit earlier than initially planned, those of you who have already been playing the game either via itch or Google Play have the same latest and most stable version that we will be releasing on Steam.

We are going to take it live later today and the main reasoning behind this earlier release is so that we can also participate in the Steam Summer Sale. We are a small indie team with very limited marketing budget and a limited reach, therefore we need to make use of every opportunity to get the game infront of more people. I am told that participating the Sale will be a great opportunity to do so, and that the originally planned release date would prevent us from participating, due to Steam's 30 day discount cool down.

Pricing and Discounts

We will be releasing it here with a launch discount of 21% and will have the exact same discount in the Summer Sale as well

As a general guideline, we avoid discounts, and in case we do have a sale we will not take the price below this discounted launch price, for the foreseeable future.

We also see the base price going up a few months from now as we add more content and build a further deeper experience in the base game itself

Roadmap

I believe the game in its present state does a decent job of capturing the day to day life, events and social growth in the Roman Republic. We want to make this game the definitive experience of life in Ancient Rome, and will continue to work towards that after today's release, and as long as there is player interest.

The current overarching goal is to allow players to experience the lives, events and deeds of some of Rome's most famous and interesting Citizens, with the likes of the Gracchi Brothers, Caesar, Crassus, Marius, Sulla and more.

To this end, one of the first things we are expanding on is the political and military aspects of the game, in a major update coming a few weeks from now, we will have more Senate interactions, be able to track and contribute to Rome's expansion, events around wars, conscription and its effect on family life, Clients and Patrons, political marriages, and more

I will be detailing these out in multiple Dev Diaries in the coming weeks.

Community feedback and ideas have driving this game from the very beginning and so your voice matters, please do write to us here or on rome@thestartupengine.net with ideas, feedback, criticism, praise or anything else.

We have prioritized and delivered on various community requests and ideas in the past (including the Dark Mode, Expanding on Ludi, UI, etc), so please do let me know what upcoming feature or aspect of life in Ancient Rome excites you and we could prioritize that next

Thank you for all your support!

Alea iacta est - The Die is Cast

Vinalia Rustica - Event of the day - 14th May 2019

Vinalia Rustica was held on 19th of Sextilis (August). It was originally a rustic Latin harvest festival, celebrating the grape harvest, vegetable growth and fertility. At the Roman Vinalia Rustica, kitchen gardens and market-gardens, and presumably vineyards were dedicated to Venus Obsequens, the oldest known form of Venus. In Roman mythology, it marked the fulfillment of a vow by the ancient Latin allies of Rome's legendary ancestor Aeneas, who promised all wine of the next sacred vintage to Jupiter, in return for victory against the Etruscan tyrant Mezentius.
