Character Balancing
Roxxor the Giant

Roxxor has been struggling to compete with his fellow champions that have more flexibility and response opportunities. Roxxor is designed to be strong and sturdy but he is currently easily shut down by smaller attacks that bring control or prevent him from playing the two big cards he wants to every turn. We have decided to add Persistence to Roxxor’s kit as a staple to establish a clear identity for the big giant as an unmovable tank.

Crystal the Ice Faerie
Pinprick has proven to be a staple in Crystal’s deck as it is a cheap and almost certain Freeze application due to it’s piercing capabilities. We increased the requirement for the card to attack with Piercing to allow more time for the opponent to counter Crystal’s set up before she starts her chilly nightmares

Redeye - Tori - A.T.A.C.R
During the course of our development throughout Early Access we will be continuously balancing out Upgraded cards and mechanics to hopefully reach a competitive, fun and interesting meta where all characters can shine and have their unique playstyles.

Repent X
This card allowed Tori to ramp without a cost way to effectively and efficiently, making it hard for the opponent to react when Tori has a good starting hand. This change will hopefully making Tori’s ramp more strategically planned and less flexible to be played in any situation.

New Card Text : You are granted a Blessing and your Devotion is further increased by 2. If you have not Transcended you need to discard a card. Otherwise, draw a card.

Kinetic Barrier and Kinetic Barrier X
After several nerfs to the A.T.A.C.R and the introduction of new characters, the strength of the mech has dwindled a bit and at times have a hard time playing out combos if it is controlled and unable to reload. Since it originally did not have any counter methods to resolve controls and afflictions, we’ve decided to add Persistence to it’s deck.

Angry Swipe X
This card has been redesigned as admittedly it was unplayable in both Adventure mode and Dueling Mode. The redesigned ability will retain the same identify of its normal version as a powerful damage connector that allows Redeye to build bloodlust with a boost.

New Card Text : If you have taken damage this turn, the damage of this attack is increased by 5 and your Bloodlust is increased by 1. You are Exhausted after you attack.

Ignore Pain X
Fortify is extremely powerful in PVP as it will potentially make all of the opposing attacks nullified from any form of reaction. As many setup cards are lighter in damage, with Ignore Pain losing it’s bloodlust requirement, Redeye can effectively shut down a large majority of his opponent’s resource building and combo enablers starting turn one. We have decided to tone down the advantage Redeye gains from Ignore Pain X to last only on the turn it is played.

MAJOR UPDATE! Dueling Mode and more heads Death or Glory into a new beginning!

Champions!

The wait is over, we are back and ready to start a new development journey with Death or Glory. During the past 3 months, we have been quietly developing the next iteration of Death or Glory that you will be seeing in this update. Lessons we have learned from launch has fuelled our inspirations towards the progression, the unlocks and the game direction we want to take Death or Glory in the upcoming road to the official launch. Admittedly we are aware of our shortcomings and the disappointment we have left our audience in our initial EA launch. This update is our first step into our response to the feedback and reflection that was left by our amazing community. Once again, we want to thank you all for your patience and support into our project and the game we love.

Dueling Mode
This new mode will be the new main arena for quick fights in Death or Glory against both AI controlled opponents and other players across the world. Designed to be rapid and ever changing, Dueling Mode is over all quite simple in its structure but deep in how many decks can be built. We are introducing the inclusion of upgraded cards into a multiplayer setting with a twist from adventure mode, you are only allowed to bring 2 upgraded cards into battle.

Building a Regen deck with Strength X, or focusing on an explosive turn with Equality X will be two completely different takes on the win conditions for Tori. Or how about building a ramp deck for Redeye with Bloodboil X and combo it off with an early Ravenous Chomp X to leech and suck all the life out of your opponent. This is just the tip of the iceberg as to what can be explored with over 180 new cards available in multiplayer. Experiment, discover and most importantly enjoy all the crazy strategies and combos that can be born out of the new dueling experience. But this is not all that is new.

Dueling Mode takes place in the tower of duels, a tower built and erected by great alchemists from a bygone era. Every character will journey through the 8 floors in the tower to reach the top. Accumulate score from each battle won and earn bonuses by maintaining winstreaks to blitz through floors. Every character will start from the Beginner Floors and rank up into Expert and Veteran levels where more cards and different decks can be built. As we continue developing throughout the coming months, we will reveal more about the history and details about this monumental arena as the journey continues.

Character Progression
A major focus of this update is an overhaul of each character’s journey in every player hands. We wanted to make every step of the experience with a new character pleasurable, whether it’s when you are new to them, or you struggle through challenging bosses or even when you are dominating game after game, your champion will grow along with your expertise. The new progression track for each champion will introduce 22 more cards to unlock with a variety of fun and interesting targets ranging from just levelling up or playing interesting combos to deal super high damage. Unlock cards, perks, and cosmetics just by dueling and going on adventures.

The current update will feature integrated progression throughout dueling and the next stage of development will focus on implementing that in adventure mode. Stay tuned for our updates in the second quarter of 2024!

Taj - the Witch Doctor

Game Balancing

Health and Draw
A small but impactful change we are making in dueling is the initial draw size and health of every champion. Both players will now start with a Maximum of 40 health and draw 6 cards at the beginning of the game. This was changed after we were play testing and decided that this will benefit will balance both aggressive and late game characters by decreasing the luck of the draw on the first turn. We are eager to explore more deeply into this change will likely make adjustments as the season progresses. Please let us know what you think and how the battles feel after the change.

Cards
As we are now opening up Upgraded cards to the multiplayer environment, we have made balance changes to several cards we felt was way too strong and hard to deal with. This round of balancing focused on the clear overperformers and admittedly there could be more subtle combos within the game that we have not discovered yet. We will be balancing the game very frequently moving forward, where we expect to change overperforming and underperforming cards every or other week. Explore discover super combos and have fun!

Doom
We’ve adjusted Doom to be less frustrating to deal with when it is applied early in the game through the luck of the draw. To balance out the ability we adjusted the countdown value on cards.
Doom New Ability: A doom counter is reduced by 1 at the end of every turn. When it reaches 0, your opponent will suffer damage equal to their life total, if it is 15 or less. Lower doom value replaces higher one.


Future of Death or Glory

Client Upgrades
As you can tell from the new client, one huge difference we are making is to shift the aspect ratio of the game into 16:9. Yes, that was a mistake on our part as we started out development for tablets then transitioned into releasing on PC first. In the following months we will be transitioning the rest of the game into 16:9, most notably the Battle Page and Adventure mode.

Adventure Mode
Other than client improvements, there will be two big directions where we will be improving. The first being a redesign of Adventure mode, with our new technology and lessons learnt from the 1.0 version, we have been laying the groundworks to create a fun, progressive and at the same time challenging journey for players to go on when they head into PVE. Players can expect to see updates to PVE game modes and content soon around Q2 -3 of this year.

Dueling Mode Enhancements and Content
We are also aiming to enrich the experience of Dueling mode by adding in different features, card types as well as new champions. There will be a range of content scheduled for the coming months as well as close balancing updates that follows the meta. As an example for what we are eager to implement, is raid battles being part of dueling and events that any player can participate in.

Our love for game development is going strong. We hope all of you that have been with us since the beginning and those who have just started their journey in the arena will have as much fun as we are in the adventure called Death or Glory.

Balance Changes
In preparation for the tournament this weekend, we have made a few changes to several characters to balance out the viability of all characters. We aim to create a game where all characters are relevant and maintain competitiveness throughout version updates where new characters will be released. This round of balance changes aims to tweak the power level of certain characters to avoid them becoming overly dominant or overly weak. We didn’t want to do anything too drastic that will change the current strategies and make big shifts to meta now before the tournament.

Tori the Paladin
Tori receives the most love in this balance patch. Being an Evangelist, she is limited by her indulgence level that essentially limits the number of cards played a turn to 2. Which from play data and feedback from the community, is quite easy to play around in PVP making her difficult to fare against other champions. The changes below aim to address the problems in her play pattern by introducing a new Boon mechanic and increase the consistency of some key cards in her deck.

Boon - New Mechanic
“When this card is played, it is unaffected by the Evangelist's indulgence level that could result in reducing your devotion or exhaustion.”

The main idea of this mechanic is to allow Evangelists to have additional opportunities to play cards before transcendence, thus decreasing their predictability. We will be looking more closely at the class rules and how we can incorporate more Boon cards in the future to increase the number of viable strategies in the class.

Enryu the Gargantusaur
Over the week, the big bad gargantusaur came as a threat to the existence of all creatures in Corrum. But… quickly no one feared it. Despite being bulky and having access to powerful healing abilities, Enryu is hard countered by Grievous Wound and without access to Cure, it has no counterplay and the deck falls apart. We decided to give it access to Cure through an Unleashed card to give Enryu the ability to take initiative. As a result, we also nerfed the regen ability on Reinvigoration to keep it’s healing potential in check as repeated use of this card turn after turn can result in a very frustrating play experience.

Roxxor the Giant
Monster Pummel is perhaps the least played card in the game, even when it is in the deck, it is typically never played and just there to fill the 15-card requirement for decks. As a strong, muscle-head giant, we want to keep the identity of this card to be simple but powerful. We increased the damage of this card and to match the cost and risks for playing this ultimate punch.

Susan - A.T.A.C.R - Lee
The current meta is undoubtedly dominated by these three champions. Their mix of flexibility, burst damage and control makes them hard to content against in PVP. Before the tournament we want to slightly dampen their dominance by making small changes to their cards. But at the same time, we don’t want to over nerf or change the meta drastically at this moment in time. So, these changes will mainly focus on rebalancing card costs and rewards.

Enryu, the Gargantusaur
The Gargantusaur is not a natural species unlike other dinosaurs that roam the land. When the arena started to fall out of favour, the kingpin that owned the business cross-bred enhanced native Tyrannosauruses into an unstoppable titan. Having the current champions fight such a monster would surely make an incredible spectacle, drawing a massive crowd. But can a beast not born of nature be ever contained?

Dominate the arena as the alpha predator of Corrum! Born as a weapon from a cruel experiment, the Gargantusaur was created as a representation of power. The gigantic monster has scales tough as armour, claws sharp as teeth and the ability to disintegrate anything with a nuclear breath. Join the fight as the King of Monsters and show your foes what it means to be the epitome of evolution!

Performance Optimisation
Since our launch in October, the most major complaint regarding the game was the excessive memory usage that clogged the VRAM of most devices causing crashes to the game and on rare occasions the device itself. We apologize for our oversight and any bad experiences we have caused to our players. For the past few months, we have been digging deep into our base code structure and asset management throughout the game to decrease the memory requirement that exceed what would be deemed reasonable. In this patch we want to launch the first large refactoring of our core structure to improve performance. From our studio testing, we have found our new implementations can reduce roughly 45% of VRAM usage for both default and enhanced graphics mode. We are still in the process of replacing some assets that lost some picture quality and pixel density, but we felt we wanted to push this performance change this update as the first step to our battle. We hope any players who have before avoided the enhanced graphics mode or experienced any performance crashes to now have a new experience with Death or Glory. Please let us know your experience after the patch as we continue moving forward with our performance patching and once again thank you for the great support and sticking with us despite our flaws.

Balance Change

Windy
The design of windy is to create a sense of urgency and inevitability. When windy stacks, less attack options become avaliable for the opposition`. However the current implementation of windy can make the inevitable come within 2 or even 1 turn due to specific card ordering and initial draws. We’ve decided to change windy to only be stackable once per turn to smoothen out the play experience. This will retain the ability to stack more than 1 value of windy per turn but only once, therefore by playing powerful cards Windy can still be gained more rapidly, but not by playing small cards repeatedly in a single turn.

Added effect : Windy value can only be increased once per turn. (The buff icon will turn grey when it has already been stacked during this turn)

  • An issue with A.T.A.C.R character unlock pop up have been solved.

Get ready for the latest character addition to the arena with an unnatural phenomenon, the rise of the Gargantusaur. Enryu, the king of monsters, was born from underworld experiments that sought to understand the genetics of powerful beasts that roamed the land. The genes of different tyrannosaurs was merged with dark magic and science by the kingpin of the arena to create the ultimate threat and the disaster that will befall the champions of Corrum. With a gargantuan body, sharp claws and a disintegrating breath the beast of the kingpin will turn it's foes to ash by using new Disintegrate and Enrage mechanics. Will this beast become your friend or foe?

Card Balancing

Class Cards - Techie
Upon the release of our latest character, Susan the Sniper, we revisited the Techie playstyle and made changes to several cards in two regards. The first aspect was to power up and give a stronger playable identity to System Overdrive and Sentry Canon whilst the second aspect was simplifying a basic techie card, Fusion Pistol.

System Overdrive
We decreased the heat requirement for System Overdrive to make it more playable due to the enormous drawback of not being able to reload at the end of turn due to exhaustion.

Sentry Canon
The stats of the Sentry Canon was reworked in order for it to serve a unique purpose (other than mitigating mystic well chances) when compared to a similar parry in Susan’s arsenal. The Sentry Canon, although slow, can now act as a large deterrent to enemy attacks as well as provide the occasional damage.

Fusion Pistol
As a starting card, we felt the ability and ease of use was too complex for most scenarios. Although sometimes it’s fun to blow up big enemies with a basic card, more often than not, we found ourselves unable to play the card due to the complex heat/ammo management that is required to just play it.

Susan the Sniper
The release of Susan made a good change to the overall playstyle diversity in the arena, big damage with a stealthy playstyle is certainly fun to lock opponents out with a mastered cardplay ordering. It does seem however, a bit too consistent with minimal counterplays to Susan’s most prominent combos which is not something we want to see in our game that wants players to attack and react every step of the way. We nerfed some of her main combo enablers whilst gave a few buffs to some of her hidden gems that might’ve been overshadowed by her other cool cards.

Redeye the Werewolf - Eviscerate X
A card that we’ve always wanted to shine a bit more is Eviscerate X, with its signature high Bleeding output and cool alternate art, it's always a delight to see and admire when it is in hand. Though that's not really the case when we want to be competitive, a 2X bleeding isn’t really too viable against high boss health and the RNG of bleeding. Thus we decided to directly buff this card and give Redeye a new tool to crank out damage.

Tori the Paladin - Bravery X
This card has been on our radar for a while due to its interaction with blessing and application of Fortify and Regen that can practically make Tori an unstoppable tank. But upon further testing stat analysis, we seem to have been too harsh on its condition and powerful so we simplified it and gave it a slight power buff.

New Card Text : If your Blessing is active, consume it and you are granted Fortify(3) and Regen(1).

A.T.A.C.R - BFM and BFM X
A big …. Missile is what defines the A.T.A.C.R and its damage certainly is in a class of its own. We believe this card to currently be rather balanced as there is a large risk reward into playing it since it is a missile, there are generally many ways to destroy it. However facing a turn 1 BFM along with a bad starting hand makes for a very bad day as that battle is almost immediately lost. We decided to rebalance the card to avoid this extreme case whilst giving it slightly more power to compensate.

Susan the Sniper
A well trained assassin can complete a mission despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Susan is an assassin of the highest caliber. After graduating from the Medusa program, she has become an efficient instrument to remove dissidents of the state. Yet when she discovered how her lover was tortured and interrogated, she swore vengeance. Now she is part of the resistance, liberating those who are still trapped by layers of facades and deception.

Answer your calling and complete your missions with the latest champion, Susan the Sniper. Target your opponent by locking on, giving you access to dealing critical damage. Armed with her trusty sniper and large number of gadgets in her back pocket, Susan can deal heavy damage whilst hiding behind stealthy shields with heat based equipment in her arsenal. Earn themed card backs with the new MAX character level

Earn a special character themed cardback by leveling up each of your characters to 11 and earn a themed cardback. These cardbacks can be used between any of your decks once they have been unlocked from the progression track and a future update will improve the visibility of card backs in multiplayer and inventory.

Daily and Weekly Objectives Rework

Thank you to all the champions that have been playing Death or Glory since our E.A launch in october. We have received feedback regarding progression, performance and various gameplay banking. Our team is currently in the works of designing and implementing new game modes and a holistic leveling system that can encompass all aspects of the player experience together. As the first step in this update, we are changing the way Daily and Weekly Objectives are completed along with an improved diamond acquisition rate. Each individual daily and weekly objective will now reward players with diamonds of varying amounts and can be claimed regardless of the completion of other rewards. Play and complete adventures every week to earn diamonds and unlock new characters coming very soon!


Balancing Changes

Silence
The current behavior of Silence only affected Attack cards and did not affect the damage value gained from the text of cards. We have noticed that this was unintuitive and over complicated for a commonly used ability in the RPG space. Changes have been made to rework this ability to affect more card types with a clear restriction list to make it both more intuitive and interesting to strategize with.

New ability text : Card effects from your opponent are negated for X turns. Class related resources, damage alteration and negative cost like life loss or exhausted are unaffected.

Roxxor - Perk : Unstoppable
Roxxor has proven to be a crowd favorite with his enormous strength and grapples. But from the initial data it seems he is slightly a bit too powerful when using his signature perk as it allows him to mitigate a lot of the risk from unused action points. We decided to lower the ceiling of the benefits from the perk to keep risk reward in place during combat.

Roxxor’s Unstoppable perk will now only grant a maximum of 1 momentum at the end of turn.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed text alignment issues
  • Equipped skins will now show the name of skin on the selection menu
  • Pass sounds updated (no more “Pass”)
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the clear status of adventures to be updated as Cleared, players can replay the map and gain their rewards again.

  • Roxxor Tree Whack image display error is now fixed in the Deck Edit
  • Fixed a bug with the Beginners Champion Pack which prohibited players from choosing Roxxor as their unlock.

Balance Changes

Persistence
The fear mechanic has always been a touchy subject throughout the beta and this early period of the EA. Given its RNG nature, it is always a surprise (albeit sometimes a very bad one) whether your strategy can work or will even play out when you are feared. We decided to add Fear into the list of status preventions that Persistence will give to players to allow for more control and counterplay when up against certain enemies that use this mechanic often.

Added effect: Persistence will now prevent fear from being applied as well as remove existing fear value when played.

Roxxor - Monkey Hurl
This card was a little weak in comparison to Roxxor’s other attacks as it is a throw that requires a set up and costs 2 momentum just to do 9 damage. We want to keep this as a unique control card that follows up from a throw and not identify it as a big finisher, thus we reduced the momentum cost of this card to increase its playability among the other awesome cards.

Momentum Cost: 2 > 1
