Bug fixes and balance improvements.

1) Fixed bug where focus group screen tutorial window made no sense.
2) Fixed bug where some button icons were missing during the tutorial.
3) Fixed error in food shortages event where poverty was decreased, instead of increased.
4) Changes to a whole list of in-game events to better balance difficulty.
5) Fixed broken link for fake news, which now correctly affects the violent crime rate.
6) Fixed crash bug when giving a speech if the PC has no sound card.
7) Fixed bug where if a mod was already disabled, its preview image did not appear in the mod screen.
8) Up and down keys can now be used to scroll current list of policies on the new policy screen.
9) Fixed rare crash bug, which could also lead to corrupt textures, when enabling or disabling a mod on some PCs.
10) Fixed bug that would cause the parties that were not the centrist party in 3 party games to have unusually small memberships and thus turnout.
11) Balance improvements to some situations and events.

1) The likelihood of the 'School Shooting' event is now boosted by low Mental Health, not just low Health is general.
2) The highest form of selective schooling now has a negative impact (long term) on Mental health due to childhood pressure.
3) Health is no longer a factor in state pension cost, as the impact is already modeled more accurately by lifespan.
4) Updated star ratings for difficulty for each map.
5) Changes to many variables that make health levels harder to fix.
6) The Driverless cars situation now raises obesity (less walking).
7) Reduced impact of State Schools on Unemployment.
8) Increased impact of Technology on Unemployment.
9) Increased impact of Driverless Cars on Unemployment.
10) Reduced impact of Vertical Farm Subsidies on Unemployment.
11) Added new UI to the select replacement minister screen to show each minister's suitability for the current job.
12) The UK now no longer starts the game with citizenship for sale, as the Uk government has now scrapped this policy in the real world.
13) The calculation for ministerial effectiveness is now spread over 3 turns, so there is not a sudden crash for a whole department if someone resigns or is fired.
14) Reduced the impact of Enterprise Investment Scheme on income of self employed and high income voters.
15) Reduced the income effects of school tax credits and faith school subsidies.
16) Free bus passes no longer impact those on low incomes, just retired people, and costs are scaled by number of retired people.
17) Increased the impact of lifespan improvements on the cost of state pensions and social care.
18) Increased impact of Cryptocurrency Adoption on Organized Crime, Internet Crime and Tax Evasion.
19) Fake News now feeds into Violent Crime.
20) Increased impact of Technology on Healthcare Demand, and sloped it more.
21) In-game options screen now has UI animation slider
22) New optional UI element (can be disabled in options), showing icons next to each effect UI strip in the game.



23) After playing one game, the player now has a new option on the start game screen, where they can choose a new cabinet in the first turn for free.



24) Fixed crash when using the back button on a window after opening and closing the polls window.
25) Added new voter distribution data bubbles to the background on polls screen to better illustrate how soft your support might be.


Big update with tons of fixes and new policy/situation/simulation stuff

Hi everyone! Welcome top the first update of Democracy 4 post-launch! These updates will be bigger and less frequent now its no longer an Early Access game. This is a complete list of the changes and fixes in this update to the game:


  • Fixed bug where the first tutorial window could be skipped, causing issues.
  • Fixed various situations where the tutorial window on the electioneering window could get stuck.
  • Changes to some balance code, including adjusting extent to which govt debt is seen as a losing factor, and detecting zero debt as a winning factor.
  • Having no extremists in terrorist groups is now noted as a game balancing factor.
  • Added new model of mental health, which feeds into healthcare demand and has multiple inputs.
  • Increased (and curved) impact of lifespan on healthcare demand.
  • High levels of Lifespan now impact the cost of Social Care and State Pensions.
  • New situation (Social Media Addiction) and Policy (Regulate Social Media).
  • The various fields in the mod content editing screens can now reference items created within the current mod.
  • Mod tools now allow you to add scripts for a modded country that generate grudges (permanent effects) to customize starting conditions.
  • Fixed crash bugs relating to deleting the last dilemma, situation, policy, situation or simulation value in a mod you created, then using it.
  • Fixed bug in transgender ban in the military dilemma where rejecting the ban still reduced liberalism.
  • Reduced frequency of the speed limits dilemma when playing Germany.
  • The new car subsidies policy now scales many of its effects down to allow for the transition to EVs.
  • Fixed a lot of missing translations for various items.
  • Reversed impact of the single-adoptions dilemma on parents so it fits the description better.
  • Fixed bug where going to a policy from the manifesto pledges screen and back again would require two mouse clicks to quit electioneering screen.
  • Graphics optimization to boost frame rate for every screen in the game for super-low spec graphics cards.

Minor UI fixes for different resolutions

Some tweaks to improve UI scaling when using 4k monitors or small laptop resolutions.

Balance changes and optimisations for slower PCs. Some bug fixes.

1) Fixed bug where the mod tools would let you change the mods name without fixing the content or preview image.
2) Newly implemented policies no longer claim that cancelling has no political capital cost, when its in fact not allowed.
3) EV transition is now a factor in many of the causes of the Petrol Protests situation.
4) Rebalancing of some events, situations and dilemmas to prevent some items triggering too commonly or rarely.
5) Big optimisation to new game and next turn processing code.
6) Made some achievements easier: Apocalypse Now, Grave-Digging Boom, Dangerous Streets, Start Your Engines and Anything Goes.
7) Balance: Adjusted negative impact on equality at high levels of GDP so it its slightly stronger and a shallower curve.
8) Balance: Impact of technology on unemployment is slightly stronger and a shallower curve.
9) CyberBullying situation now increases Healthcare Demand.
10) Increased by 50% the impact of long lifespan on both Healthcare Demand and the Retired group membership.
11) IncomeTax is now reduced by unemployment to some extent.(assumed dividend income is included within income tax).
12) Industrial Automation now has a stronger impact on unemployment, productivity and trade union membership.
13) The automation tax now has a stronger negative impact on industrial automation, but potentially twice the tax revenue.
14) Policy finance history charts points now have tooltips.

Japanese Language added, balance changes and UI improvements.

2) Improved the way the game handles fullscreen borderless mode for better alt+tabbing.
3) The impact of food stamps on health and farmers income is now scaled by the actual number of poor people.

8) Really low unemployment will now be a major input to the skills shortage situation.
9) Create mod screen now sticks your steam name (if logged in) as the default author name for new mods.
10) Create/update mod screens now let you set your mod's visibility from within the game.
11) The create mod and update mod screens now work ok outside of steam for you to create a mod locally on your own PC.
12) Alcohol and Tobacco bans now have drastically stronger impacts on consumption at the high end.
13) Health and School voucher policies now please capitalists slightly.
14) Reduced effectiveness of Free School Meals on Poverty. Effect is halved, and cost scaled by percentage of poor voters.
15) Changes to a number of car related policies so that they scale with car usage.
16) Changed some starting conditions for UK so it starts slightly less disastrously.
17) Added Japanese Language.

Updated with some balance fixes and better mod tools for creating countries

1) Fixed issue where some parts of the modding UI would cause errors and not open folders on PCs with non-ascii characters in the username.
2) Fixed bug where the impact of banning low-mpg cars on oil demand was backwards.
3) Inverse effects (1-x) are now still shown and labelled as inverse on the details window for such effects.
4) Support for modding new countries using the in-game mod tools
5) Changes to inputs to Cryptocurrency adoption to make them more intuitive and also slightly slower acting.
6) Fixed two tiny equation problems that meant the wrong effects for CCTV and Armed Police.
