Patch 1.3 — Optimization, New Engine Version and Bug Fixes

Hello, Volunteers!

A new patch is already available for download.

— The game has been transferred to the new Unreal Engine version 4.25.
— A performance issue caused by new versions of drivers for graphic cards has been resolved.
— Additional optimization of locations, ticks and lighting, influencing the loading of CPU and graphic cards.
— A bug with the customization save has been fixed (please note that if you’ve made progress in game and you want to change your character’s appearance, then after changing it use your last save file; if it’s not the last save file you’re loading, then for the customization to be applied you need to make this file the last, i.e. re-save it).
— Numerous minor bug fixes

P.S. Transferring to the new engine version can cause some peculiar problems, which we couldn’t track down after all the tests. If you come across them, we’ll be really happy to receive your feedback on our Discord server. If there are many of those, we’ll prepare a fix update.

Cryptozoologist's Diary. Continuing the study

Fascinated by previous findings, our nameless cryptozoologist continues to study the creatures of Granichny. This time not all mutants are aggressive killing machines -- which serves to show that the island has its own unique ecosystem, and not just an army of bloodthirsty mutants.

Sapsy

Medium sized, four legged creature with drop-shaped body and a row of spines running on its back. Despite its feeble looks, sapsy has an extraordinary amount of strength. One case in particular mentioned how sapsy managed to nearly destroy a steel bar from the cage it was contained in. This beast is predatory and also incredibly aggressive. While the creature prefers meat, it also does seem to be an omnivore.
Its saliva has unique restorative properties and could potentially be used in creating new medicine. Unfortunately, in its natural form saliva interacts differently with epidermis and muscle fibers. While accelerating healing rate for skin wounds, it has an opposite effect on muscles, causing a deep necrosis in the tissue. Though, sapsy seems to use the saliva to heal its own wounds without any side effects.
Sapsy is very hard to fend off from -- it has no fear and seems to only become more and more aggravated. Many encounters with the beast point to the fact that sapsy relies more on its eyesight. It is highly advised not to underestimate this creature when encountered as it may easily result in death.

Churaka

Quadrupedal herbivore that very vaguely resembles a common pig. Cowardly and timid, churaka tries to flee in the faintest sense of danger. Previously inhabiting european forests, about 50 specimen were transported to Granichny for studying in close to natural conditions. Mutations caused by Day X changed the creature’s physiology, but did not have any noticeable effect on its behavior.
Churaka is surprisingly agile and fast, so blindly chasing it proved to be rather difficult. According to different reports, it may also possess exceptional reflexes that allow churaka to dodge even a shot from a firearm. The creature also uses an incredibly loud and high pitched screech to confuse its pursuer. While the screech is not strong enough to rupture one’s the inner ear, it is still dangerous since prolonged exposure can deal irreversible damage to hearing organs. Churaka’s scream can also attract other, more dangerous creatures. Because of this, in most cases it is best to leave the beast to its own devices.

Quacker

Quacker has very deceptive looks: bulky front body with scaly skin, glowing overgrowth on its head and a huge mouth. Yet it is a very peaceful herbivore creature that’s easily scared. Quackers might be the animals whose appearance was affected the most by the transformation after Day X. Prior to the event they’ve had much more appealing looks and were covered in short fur. Quacker’s area of inhabitat has also changed -- from forest groves to bogs. The creature’s diet mostly consist of roots and low-growing plants.
Quackers have a very keen hearing which they use to avoid danger. The creature can notice even a faintest crack of a broken branch or a shallowest breathing. Hunters that attempt to catch it have to be incredibly patient and careful.
Quackers are a popular source of food among people of Granichny. The creature’s meat is stiff and contains a lot of ‘Moss’ when fresh, but after proper heat treatment it becomes more than edible. Quacker’s skin is also used in craftsmanship, bolstering great durability. The New Light Conglomerate even holds plans for possible domestication of these creatures after condition of Granichy becomes more stable.

Cryptozoologist's Diary

The island of Granichny contains a lot of mysteries. And on par with anomalies, the most common ones are its endemic lifeforms. Mutated after the catastrophic event known as Day X, these creatures have ghoulish appearance and behave quite aggressively. But what if someone wanted to study them as a cryptozoologist? Let’s imagine how his notes would look like in today’s post!

Madmen

Once completely normal human beings, they’ve lost all traces of their personality after the Day X. In their usual state Madmen usually aimlessly roam around without any purpose, mumbling random words and phrases devoid of any meaning. Such behavior led to multiple cases where people, out of compassion or other personal reasons, thought it was possible to reach out to madmen and help them regain their sanity. This was, frankly, not possible - and those who tried to help these creatures found themselves in dire situations, which sometimes led to their death. It all ties to a fact, that if madmen see a human unaffected by impact of Day X, they go into an uncontrollable rage, trying to attack the survivor. And while a single madman poses little threat, these subjects can somehow communicate between each other, calling out for their kin in case of a human encounter.

The state that madmen are in is believed to be caused by the green substance called ‘The Moss’. Speculations suggest that the liquid accumulating inside the madman’s lymphatic system causes a mutation and maybe, somehow, makes its victim a part of cognitive network of Madmen.

Dorgs

Incredibly aggressive creatures who are relentless and fearless in pursuit of their victim. Most researchers agree that dorgs a result of stray dogs and wolves mutating after Day X. Similar to packs of other canines, dorgs roam in packs and form some sort of hierarchy with the ‘alpha-beast’ in the lead. Although, encounters with them show that dorgs do not disperse after having their alpha slain, unlike packs of dogs and wolves . Apart from this, dorgs act like the regular wildlife creatures -- they have their own resting spots, hunting grounds and pretty standard behavioral patterns.

Having no fur and skin, their heads consist only of muscle tissue and bones, resembling that of an insect. Just like other mutants, bodies of dorgs are imbued with ‘The Moss’, spread throughout the entirety of their internal organs. According to some researches, dorgs don’t have a brain - instead they possess what seems to be a blister, filled with the same green liquid as the rest of the body.

Grutch

Grutches were species endemic to Granichny island even before the Day X. After the events of Day X, they’ve become more aggressive and started choosing different areas of inhabitat. Grutch was a massive and dangerous beast even before the mutation, but now it poses an even bigger threat. In the event of encountering a grutch, one is highly advised against fighting him and trying to retreat instead.

Grutches somewhat resemble a common brown bear. His mouth has multiple rows of extremely sharp teeth and there are bone growths on his chin and front legs. Some grutches also have bone outgrowths on their heads, resembling antlers. Unfortunately, most of the information is based on external observations. Transporting such a massive beast is rather problematic, and dissecting him out in the field is nearly impossible due to current hostile environment of Granichny.

Key Giveaway: Remembering DESOLATE early days

All games come through many iterations, and very rarely the game retains all its features. And today we wanted to share some of the details about the development of Desolate!

At the early stages of development, the game was set to take place on another planet. A fragment of introductory mission sheds light on more details:

" was sent here, to Ansora island, for researching and uncovering data about the great calamity that happened on planet Eilot a few years ago and forever changed it.”

But despite being set on another planet, the visual style of the game did already resemble that of dystopian USSR. Building a world similar to ours, but, at the same time different, also proved to be quite difficult - as well as conveying it to the player through the game’s surroundings. This two factors became the main reason to change the setting of the game to an alternate history USSR.

Back then the game also had a bigger emphasis on online . Upon starting the playthrough, a player had to start a server, that could incorporate up to 12 players! Ultimately, though, it didn’t go together well with the core design of the game -- the players were mostly completing solo story missions and their interactions didn’t go much further than engaging in PvP combat. As such, the system was scrapped and instead remade into online co-op for up to 4 players.

Other main components of the game remained mostly the same through the years. The only exception being the firearms and shooting mechanics. In the early stages the combat was melee-oriented.

Talking about old iterations of the game is always bittersweet. It’s fun to find out, how the project could turn out to be, but, ultimately, it would be a different game. And while we all can miss some of the earlier features -- with all things considered, the final product is almost always the best version of the game!
