My decision to release my game now in such an early build was the action of months of deliberation. Many people will disagree with my choice and I understand why, it appears reckless and rushed. So I will elaborate on why I choice such a risky move.
Before I answer that question ask yourself why does it appear reckless to you? Who said you have to release a game at a certain stage? Why can’t someone release a game from day one? I would guess most would answer all of those with an answer similar to this. You can’t expect someone to pay for a product that’s not done and nowhere near it. Its why most if not all game developers wait until much farther in development cycle. Also why spend your hard earned money on a developer which you’ve never heard of. So I pondered on all of those questions, and I was about to follow the same path myself. I had a build of Devoured Time about 45 % complete, it was great. It played the way I wanted, and did everything I needed it to. It was much further along then you will get if you buy my game right now, and worth every penny. But when I began to talk to one of my best friends, and hear all the great ideas he had I ran into a wall. They were features that would work perfect in my game, bring it to the next level, but they all required major changes to the core gameplay of my game. So to best describe that, think about a car, its 50% complete and a new type of part comes out that will revolutionize the car but it would require a complete breakdown and reassemble of the car. Now sure you can do this once or twice but to continue to do this will get you nowhere with a ton of wasted time. So this got me thinking, why not open my game up to the world at a point where I can add almost anything in and continue development? I knew this choice would bring me many negative comments and I understand why. Many games on steams early access have been major disappointments. They have taken our money and either never finished the game or released a game prematurely and ran off with our money. People blame steam for allowing them to sell their game, when in reality it’s not steams fault it’s the developers fault. Steam specific advised me to consider delaying my launch, so they care about the consumer and developer to.
So of course you should be skeptical about my game, its new, I’m unknown and so many times developers have stolen your money and my money. I don’t expect you to believe me, you don’t even know me. All I ask is keep an open mind and a watch on my game. You don’t have to buy my game to suggest ideas, I’m sure you’ve always wanted to play a game that has all the systems you want in one game. Don’t think because a large game company hasn’t done it that it’s too hard to do. The reality is it’s a risk to try something new, a financial risk large company’s choose not to take. I chose to take a risk and begin to create something more than just my game, to be ridiculed and called everything but a nice guy, to change how people view early access games.
If you read all this thank you and please suggest things you want to do in an rpg game. No idea is to small or to stupid, I won’t let Devoured Times fans down.
