Devlog #21: More decorations and tools

Hello again, Fossil Hunters!

It’s been a while since our last devlog, but development definitely hasn’t slowed down! We’ve been working on various things – while some of them are more on the technical side and are difficult to illustrate, there are some additions we would like to show you today! 🙂

We have added even more decorations you can use to breathe life into your museum displays! There are over 40 new objects and even more will be added! New decorations include potted plants, benches and fountains. There will also be more variety among pictures, which you can hang on museum walls.

Some of you may have noticed a new screenshot on our Steam page. This is the one:

We continue experimenting with various poses and checking how well they work with available museum decorations. We’re also consulting them with experienced paleontologists to make sure we keep them as realistic as possible. You can see one of the results here – this lovely screenshot featuring T-Rex posing among greenery. While we’re at it, you can also see how some of the previously shown decorations work on a display!

We are also including more tools for you to use during your adventure! You have most likely seen at least one of them if you’ve been following our other social media profiles.

One of the additions is a trowel and along with it, there is yet another step to fulfill before you can distinguish an ordinary rock from paleontological treasure. That’s where the trowel comes in! Once you find some interesting rocks, all you need to do is use this simple tool to take off the muck covering them.

In order to help you with the process of moving your fossils around, we have also added a transportation drone! It’s not available from the get-go, but once you unlock it, it will be a great help during your trips. You can call it by interacting with your laptop and it will carry your treasures where needed.

We continue polishing game mechanics, as well as the game’s UI. We’re making sure certain parts of the game, like assembling and cleaning, progress more smoothly. We’ve also been working on optimization. We hope to show you more in the next devlog.

If you’d like to talk about the game, we’re waiting for you on our Discord server. Feel free to join our little community of paleontology enthusiasts!

If you’ve had your eyes on Dinosaur Fossil Hunter for some time, make sure you have it on your Wishlist – that way you’ll know as soon as new devlog or any other announcements come in. 🎁

Best Regards,
Dinosaur Fossil Hunter Team

Devlog #20: Improved skeleton models, field trip and upcoming Prologue update!

Hello, Fossil Hunters!

Now that we have finished working on gameplay mechanics that will be included in the game, we are now focused on improvements. That includes thorough testing, gathering feedback, making tweaks and balancing the gameplay and also making improvements in terms of performance.

At the same time, we have also taken our time analyzing feedback from Steam, our Discord channel and other sources that you have provided us since the last prologue update. Based on that, we've picked out some gameplay elements that could be improved or added and we are also taking them into account while developing the game further.

Here are some things we have been working on recently:

Thanks to our team members who have done thorough research and paleontologists who provided us with invaluable feedback, we have significantly improved the quality of our in-game dinosaur skeletons!

They are now much more detailed and anatomically close to real skeletons. Now, we are working on improving existing poses.

As we have already mentioned, while we're working on balancing the gameplay progression, the QA team is handling the internal testing and providing us the feedback necessary for further improvements.

Now a little fun fact: some of us had the opportunity to gain field experience by participating in paleontological research ourselves! 😃

We're also preparing an update for the Prologue version of the game – we have added many new gameplay mechanics that will be also included in the full version of the game. This update will come with an expanded tutorial, which will explain newly added mechanics. We hope that will make it much easier for you to jump right into the full game and start your adventure. 😉

Thank you for your interest in Dinosaur Fossil Hunter! Your feedback is a great help to us and we hope to write even more about changes made in the upcoming devlog!

If you have something to share with us, we invite you to join our Discord channel.

Best Regards,
Dinosaur Fossil Hunter Team

Devlog #19: New UI and decorations!

Hi there, Fossil Hunters!

Here comes another update regarding our development progress! We have a few things to show you. 🙂

First of all, we’re working on a new UI. While adding some highly demanded features, it was also necessary to design UI for certain menus. We’ve been considering many possibilities and we came to the conclusion that it’s a good time to take a good look at the entire UI again and make sure it’s intuitive, while also making sure that every element blends in nicely together.

Here are shots of some WIP menus, namely – Skill tree, Travel, Map and Inbox.

We are also about to wrap up our work on new decorations, ready to grace your expositions. 🌴✨ We have prepared over 120 new objects!

We have also acquired many new references and helpful materials on various dinosaurs’ anatomy and we’re putting this knowledge to use by polishing and fixing our skeleton models – all to make them as realistic as possible and bring joy to you, dinosaur enthusiasts. 🦖

We’ll definitely be working on all these things during upcoming weeks. Of course, we’ll keep you updated on the progress, be it via our social media or another devlog. Stay tuned!

Like always, we encourage you to join our Discord server! If you’re only now finding out about this game and it piqued your interest, make sure to add it to your Wishlist! 🎁

Devlog #18: Hub with terrain office!

Dear Paleontologists!

We’d like to give you a little update regarding our recent development progress. :)

For the last month, we’ve been hard at work polishing the core mechanics and making the gameplay as smooth as possible. We’re also in the process of adding features included in our Kickstarter stretch goals.

We’re aware that hub is a point of return for every player, as it’s the place he frequently visits between extracting fossils and managing his museum. It’s a frequent stop before you set out on your next trip, that’s why it should come with all necessary equipment.

That’s why we’d like to introduce…

New HUB system! 🦖

It’s the one place that is available to you from the get-go. Provided you have the fast-travel option unlocked, wherever your excavation point is, you can go back to your hub anytime. All you need is to open the map, choose the hub’s location and viola! You’re home!

Other than serving as a base, hub is your place to go to whenever you need to adjust your equipment for upcoming trips or pass your findings to the museum.

Hub allows you to perform following actions:

✉️ Send fossils to the museum

In order to send a fossil to the museum, you need to park your car in a good place and move boxes with your newly discovered fossils to right transportation slots. After that, all that’s left is to access a transporting menu and from there, a single command will handle it. The next time you see this fossil, it’ll be in a museum. :)

🚗 Change your vehicle

Hub comes with your own terrain office, equipped with a laptop computer. Approach it to trigger a menu that will allow you to change your vehicle and bring new equipment.

🛢️ Refill canister

Of course, even the best car won’t be of use if it runs out of fuel. In your hub, you can find a canister, which you need to fill with a nearby 1000 l barrel. Then, you can take the full canister with you on your travels. It’ll definitely come in handy in case of emergency.

📦 Pack necessary equipment to your vehicle

Whatever equipment you own, you’ll find it here. Every new trip means new adjustments! Grab all the equipment needed to set up an excavation point and load it onto your vehicle. After the trip is finished, come back to your hub, gather new equipment and set off again in search of new adventures and discoveries!

Stay tuned for upcoming updates, and keep following Dinosaur Fossil Hunter on Steam! 🦕

Join our Discord community, too! We post sneak peeks every now and then, so it’s a great way to stay up to date with development progress. We’d be happy to hear from you! :)

Devlog #17: Development status update

Dear Paleontologists!

For the last few months we’ve been hard at work developing this game based not only on the Kickstarter stretch goals but also on ideas & suggestions presented by our amazing community.

The first goal of our campaign was to deliver a Polished Early Access version of the game, ultimately we ended up unlocking a lot of additional stretch goals which we managed to implement into the game already.

Together with the new functionalities added based on your feedback (like, for example, a Skill Tree or Museum Progress) we realized that we have completed a lot more content and features than we originally planned for the Early Access and that, with just a bit more work, the game would be almost ready for a full release.

Because of that we’ve decided to change the release plan a little and prepare the game for a normal release on Steam. We hope to make everything ready in the coming months, while of course the Kickstarter backers can expect the beta access sooner - before official release.

Our plan is to update the game after release as well, with not only fixes but also additional content. We’ll present a more detailed development roadmap on game launch.

Currently we are at the stage of “filling the gaps”, preparing the missing translations, improving the tutorials and balancing the gameplay. We’re also upgrading the game engine version to improve performance and graphics.

We’re also working on new promotional materials, as well as new game trailer, which will show all the implemented mechanics. As always - we welcome your feedback.

Stay tuned for upcoming updates, and remember that You can also join our Discord community! It’s a place where you can talk to us directly and where we post sneak peeks from the game every now and then, so it’s a great way to stay up to date with development progress. We’d be happy to hear from you! :)

Best Regards,
Dinosaur Fossil Hunter Team
