Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Huge Version 2 update is live!

EBF5 V2 is now live for everyone on Steam, and the base price of the game will go up whenever Valve approves it. So it’s your last chance to buy it for $15!

The game should update automatically whenever you restart Steam, and once that's done it should say v2.1.1 on the main menu.

Here’s a spoiler-free summary of what’s new:
• 52 “new” foes, with a large portion of them being bosses or mini bosses.
• 31 new achievements.
• 16 new Flair equips, 12 new skills and 2 new limit breaks.
• 50 new monster cards – a new item type.
• A new biome, 3 new dungeons, and many secret areas.
• Significant balancing and quality of life changes.
• A “Cheats and Challenges” menu that lets you customize the difficulty to a massive degree.
• A “Custom Quest” menu that lets you start a new game with major changes – such as playing with only one character, a new set of equip stats, different foes in each battle, etc.
• More art in the gallery!

You can continue from your existing save file, but I recommend starting from the beginning for the best experience. (maybe with some Custom Game or Challenge options enabled, to spice things up)

The soundtrack has not been updated yet - that's on our to-do list.
The price for that will also go up, and we'll change it from a DLC to soundtrack.

EBF5 v2 launching soon!

Hey guys, the big EBF5 version 2 update is going to go live for everyone on Steam on Saturday the 15th.
I’m announcing this early because the price of EBF5 is going to go from $15 to $20, so consider this your last chance to buy it at the old price!

The current opt-in version, which I just updated, is pretty much finished (v2.0.0, no BETA label on the main menu), but I might still make some minor balancing tweaks before the final launch. Either way, it’s time to get it shipped! And if you don’t want to wait, you might as well play it now. (to opt-in, go to the game’s properties in the Steam client, and select v2.0 in the betas tab)

Here’s a spoiler-free summary of what’s new:
• 52 “new” foes, with a large portion of them being bosses or mini bosses.
• 31 new achievements.

• More art in the gallery!

You can continue from your existing save file, but I recommend starting from the beginning for the best experience. (maybe on a custom game mode!)

Version 2.0.6 is up

If you're opted into the beta, this should be an automatic update the next time you start Steam. If you want to check out the beta, you can opt in by going to Steam Client -> Epic Battle Fanasty 5 -> Properties -> Betas -> Version 2.0

Russian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese languages are almost finished now, but the other languages are still a work in progress.

If you haven't heard about the massive Version 2.0 update, here's an earlier post that explains some of the new content.

Finally, here's a list of the bugs that have been (hopefully) fixed in 2.0.6.

EBF5 v2.0 Beta is live!

Hi Folks,

The EBF5v2.0 Steam Beta is now live!

For a spoiler free summary of all the new content and features you can check out this earlier announcement. You are more than welcome to stream and make videos of the v2.0 content, but please do not spoil anything in the titles, thumbnails or video descriptions until the beta is over!

Here's how to take part in the beta: From your Steam library, right click on Epic Battle Fantasy 5, select Properties, go to the Betas tab, and from the drop down menu select v2.0. You may need to update and/or restart Steam first. Once the update is downloaded and you start the game you’ll want to make sure you’re on the right version by checking that the main menu says “Deluxe version 2.0.3 BETA BUILD”. Your old saves should be compatible with the update, but you should make sure to have backups in case there are any problems. At this time the update is in English only, and we’ll hopefully have the other languages ready in about a month or so.

To report any bugs you find please head on over to the EBF Discord channel and post them into #ebf5_bug_reports. Please include as much information as possible such as a description of what happened and screenshots. For the most part it should (fingers crossed) be quite stable since we’ve already done a round of testing and weeded out a bunch of bugs.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5 "version 2" Beta - coming soon!

Hey guys, a big update to EBF5 is coming at the end of this month!
You'll have the option to opt-into the beta of EBF5 "version 2".

The beta should be quite stable (but maybe a bit unbalanced), and it will be English-only, with other languages coming later. If you want to wait for the 100% finished version, that'll probably be ready in January.

Here's a spoiler-free summary of what's new:
• 52 "new" foes, with a large portion of them being bosses or mini bosses.
• 31 new achievements.
• 16 new Flair equips, 12 new skills and 2 new limit breaks.
• 50 new monster cards - a new item type.
• A new biome, 3 new dungeons, and many secret areas.
• Significant balancing and quality of life changes.
• A "Cheats and Challenges" menu that lets you customize the difficulty to a massive degree.
• A "Custom Quest" menu that lets you start a new game with major changes - such as playing with only one character, a new set of equip stats, different foes in each battle, etc.

You can continue playing from your old save, or start from the beginning.

Here's a 3 hour livestream of me testing the game, and showing off some of the new options.
Keep an eye on my YouTube channel - I should have a version 2 trailer up soon!

Version 2 - Progress Report

Hey guys, the big "Version 2" update for Epic Battle Fantasy 5 is about 50% done!

That sounds like it's taking a long time, but I've not been working on it full-time until recently, so it should progress quite quickly from now on. Here's a progress report of what's already confirmed for the update...

• 52 "new" foes, with 24 of them being bosses or mini-bosses. I say "new" because about half of them are returning from previous EBF games. All of them will be catch-able.

• 31 new achievements. They're of similar difficulty to what's already in the game - nothing crazy is being added, and you won't have to start from the beginning if you don't want to.

• 16 new Flair equips, many of which have completely new types of effects. There's also a lot of references to popular browser games in there.

• 14 new skills, including 2 limit breaks. Like other skills, these will be learned from NPCs and can be used by different players.

• 50 monster cards to collect. These are a new type of one-of-a-kind item that give you small perks, and are found in hard-to-reach treasure chests.

• A new biome, 3 new dungeons, and a bunch of secret areas. These areas are quite small, but they've got some unique battle gimmicks. For example, in the Battle Arena, you can only use one player in battle. Most of the new battles will be unique and challenging, with very few of them being "filler" battles.

• A "Cheats and Challenges" menu, which adds 30 options for customizing the game difficulty. You can mess around with overpowered players, make the foes unbeatable, or come up with some mix of the two. These can be changed at any time.

• A "Custom Quest" menu, which will allow you to start a new game with some major changes. Some options include: Randomized equipment locations, alternative weather, and alternative foes in filler battles.

Of course I'll also be making some balancing and quality-of-life changes. But I haven't started on those yet, and I'm not making any promises about the details.

Old saved games will be completely compatible with the updated version, but I recommend playing from the beginning for the best experience. A lot of the new stuff will be hidden earlier on in the game, and the Cheats, Challenges and Custom Quest settings will make a second playthrough much more interesting.

Steam users who own EBF5 will be able to opt-in to the Version 2 beta when it is around 90% complete, and my Patreon supporters will have access to it a bit earlier. If you want more information and previews, you can browse the posts on my website, but they contain a lot of spoilers!

If you've enjoyed EBF5 so far, please leave a Steam review - and if you didn't, please let me know, so that maybe I can fix it in the update.

And finally, I'll be raising the price of the game to $20 once the update is released.

That is all.

EBF Art and Music competition!

Hey guys.

Me and Tom Fulp from Newgrounds.com have teamed up to do a fanart and music remix competition! As you should know, NG is where the EBF series started, a very long time ago.

Here’s Tom’s post about the competition:

May 1st is the 10 Year Anniversary of Epic Battle Fantasy on Newgrounds and Epic Battle Fantasy 5 recently released on Steam. To celebrate the occasion, we’re hosting a fan art and music remix contest here on NG!

To participate in the art contest, create Epic Battle Fantasy fan art, tag it with “Epic-Battle-Fantasy” and upload it to the Newgrounds Art Portal by May 1st.

To participate in the music contest, remix any of the songs from the Epic Battle Fantasy series 2-5 (when Phyrnna was making the music), tag it “Epic-Battle-Fantasy” and upload it to the Audio Portal by May 1st.

Entries will be judged by Matt, Phyrnna, Ronja, and the NG office.

The ten best fan arts and three best music remixes will receive Steam keys (Windows only) for EBF5, EBF4, Bullet Heaven 2 and the EBF5 soundtrack.

Tom doesn’t mention it in his post, but generally in contests like this you have to make art/music specifically for the contest – otherwise we’d have hundreds of submissions from earlier! So please don’t enter anything made before today!

You can read the original post here.

In other news, I'm slowly getting back to work on EBF5, and I've recently posted some more new enemies on my website.

Working on EBF5 v2

Hey guys. I'm working on new dungeons and content for Epic Battle Fantasy 5, which is what I promised to do if the game's launch was successful. It's a big update, so it's not going to be finished any time soon. Until then, you can follow updates on my website. There's already a few new enemies shown there. I haven't planned everything out yet, but it's likely the update will include 3 new dungeons, lots of bosses/minibosses, new flairs, and challenge modes.

In related news, I'm doing a foe design competition for EBF5! I'm looking for pixel art monster designs which I may use in the game, so you should check it out if that sounds interesting. Here are the details.

EBF5 version 1.5!

Hey guys, version 1.5 is available now.
To opt-in, go to Steam Client > EBF5 > right-click > Properties > Betas > Select the other version.
I’ll set this live for everyone in a few days if no problems are found.

Here’s a list of changes:
• Added the Chinese New Year holiday quest, which includes 2 new equips and a new skill. (available 18th of Jan)
• Nerfed the Cosmic Gigalith. It no longer does damage when killed, and it has less HP if you save after beating it.
• Buffed the Evil Players, by making cheap tactics less effective against them.
• Added a new music track, used in the 1st and 4th dungeons.
• Reduced foe stat growth after level 36, so players are not punished for grinding at the end of the game.
• Fixed a bunch of minor bugs, translation errors, and made some minor balancing changes, like buffing Snow Cats.
• Someone pointed out that the audio was set to mono rather than stereo, so let me know if it sounds any better now.

This might be the last update for a few months. But I’ve got a lot of new content planned for later!

EBF5 version 1.4!

EBF5 has been updated to version 1.4!
At the moment you have to opt-in to get it - I'll set it live for everyone in a couple of days.

This update is mostly minor bug fixes and behind-the-scenes stuff:
• A change I made in v1.2 made the game run slightly slower, so that should be fixed now.
• The saving system no longer uses Flash files now, so people should no longer see the Flash player pop-ups. (Let me know if you do, you may need to delete the old files manually.)
• Cloud saving between different machines should be more reliable now.
• More translation mistakes fixed.

To get the new version, go to Steam Client > EBF5 > Properties > Betas > And opt into the beta version. You should see "v1.4" on the title screen once the game updates.

Since I changed the saving system, I want to be 100% sure that there's no problems before I make the change live for everyone. If you want to be safe, make a back-up save file before you update!
