Speedrun Challenges Update

Hi there, adventurers!

A new free update transforms Eye of the Temple into a competitive physical challenge for the extra daring adventurers.

In the new Speedrun Challenges, you can build up incredible speed, with each well-timed step from one moving block to another speeding up the movements further. The occasional dodging and ducking under obstacles in the regular game becomes a real workout at high speeds and a test of your reflexes and grace. Most challenges can be completed in just a few minutes though – that is, if you can resist trying again to beat your own time or to get a better position on the Steam leaderboards.

New features in the Speedrun Challenges update:

  • Three bite-sized challenges, with more to come
The new update initially comes with three speedrun challenges named "Into the Temple", "To the Gorge" and "Creaking Gorge" which are unlocked by playing through the corresponding sections of the normal game. Additional challenges are scheduled for future updates.
  • A workout unlike any other VR game
Many VR games can give you a workout, but no other game will see you racing through a treacherous temple at the same time, using your own feet and body to navigate your way through.
  • Beat your personal best time or aim for the top
Feel the satisfaction of beating a challenge a little faster than you were able to before. You can also compare your times on the leaderboards with those of your Steam friends and everyone else playing.
  • Speedrun the full game
It has always been possible to speedrun the full game, but now this too has leaderboards integration, with separate boards for completing the game with the normal or the best ending. The current record-holder has completed a speedrun of the full game, which normally takes 4-5 hours to complete, in just 36 minutes!
  • Join the speedrunning community
Those in the speedrunning community, or those interested in joining it, can upload recorded videos of their runs on the game's page on speedrun.com. There are boards for both the bite-sized challenges and full game runs, including variants for completing runs with or without glitches.

Good luck out there, and have fun!

Update Notes for Apr 21, 2022

Just a few fixes and tweaks!

  • Tweaks to third person spectator camera behavior. The camera is now a little bit better at noticing when something happens that it needs to get in the frame - though it's still not perfect.
  • Fixed certain event types that didn't get noticed by the third person spectator camera at all. For example, the camera would notice when wooden doors were opening but not when they were closing.

For those who are not aware, the third person spectator camera can be turned on in the Spectator options in the in-game menu. It's also automatically used when playing the game with LIV using an avatar.

Update Notes for Mar 2, 2022

Just a few fixes and tweaks!

  • Implement level design change so it's now possible to visit Eastern Lookout more than once. The barriers that used to block the way after the initial visit now get reset when revisiting.
  • Boss fight tweak: Offer boss checkpoints one attempt earlier than before.
  • Boss fight tweak: Make it a bit easier to hit the pupil.
  • Feature for spectator camera / LIV avatar use: Prevent cutting to a different camera angle if the player has been looking at the camera for a little while (presumably talking to the viewers).
  • Fix bug where pots in Fiery Pass would sometimes reappear after dying even though there had been a checkpoint after they were smashed.
  • Fix rare bug where not all scarabs would die when they were supposed to in the final boss fight.

Update Notes for Feb 16, 2022

Just a few fixes!

  • Fix end credits partial fade out effect which broke in previous update.
  • Fix issue where lighting up things with the torch would sometimes not work if reaching out far, leaning forward with extended arms. This was caused by a cheat detection system being a bit too aggressive.

A bigger update is on the way with a new Speedrun Challenges feature, which you can read more about here and even try out early if you want.

Comfort option improvements to rollers and minecart

New improvements to the VR comfort options have been rolled out. The VR Comfort options are accessed via the options in the in-game menu.

[previewyoutube="gflyN4u9zbQ;full"]

VR comfort option "Platform Light Cages" now also affect rollers and the minecart.

  • For rollers, there's light streaks at your sides while walking on the roller.
  • For the minecart, there's light streaks around the minecart while in it.
The light streaks in the "Platform Light Cages" option helps increase VR comfort by providing a static points of reference that stands still with respect to your physical play area.

VR comfort option "Blinders in Minecart" now reduces the field of view of the world only, but not of the minecart itself.

The "Blinders in Minecart" option always reduced the field of view in order to reduce discomfort while riding the minecart - specifically when turning corners. However, the reduced field of view used to also reduce how much of the minecart was seen, which was not ideal since the minecart serves a a static frame of reference.

With the new change in functionality of this option, the minecart keeps being fully visible in the entire field of view, while only the moving world outside the minecart is field-of-view-reduced. The effect is subtle and may not be noticeable if you're not looking for it. But hopefully it still helps!

Did you ever have issues with VR comfort on the rollers or in the minecart? Then it might be worth it to enable these conform options in the in-game-menu and see if it makes things any better for you!

Steam Cloud is now supported in Eye of the Temple

Hi there, adventurers!

Just a short announcement: Eye of the Temple now saves game progress and preferences in the Steam Cloud! If you play the game on multiple computers using the same Steam account, progress and preferences are also shared between them.

This should now be enabled by default, but you can toggle the feature on or off by doing the following:

  • From the Steam Library, right-click on Eye of the Temple and select Properties.
  • Under the Update tab you can toggle the checkbox "Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for Eye of the Temple".

Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

New Eye of the Temple update adds save slot selection

A new Eye of the Temple update just landed on Steam!

Being able to use multiple save slots has been the most requested feature since the game's launch, and with this new update it's finally possible. Whether it's to have multiple members of the family play, or to show off the game to friends, these save slots should come in handy.

The 'New Game' and 'Continue' options in the main menu have been replaced with a combined 'Start Game' option, which take you to the save slots. Here, you can choose from three separate save slots.

Each save slot displays which area you're currently in as well as a number of symbols representing key progression events in the game.

Is there anyone you'll be showing Eye of the Temple to over the holidays?

Enjoy!

Vote for Eye of the Temple in the Steam Awards!

Hi everyone! The Steam Awards are now LIVE, and I could really use your help. If you think Eye of the Temple is worthy of VR Game of the Year, I'd really appreciate your support here. Every vote counts!

While winning VR Game of the Year would be fantastic, just getting in the top five nominations would be huge as well.

I won't be telling you why you should consider nominating Eye of the Temple. I'll let the Steam reviews speak for themselves below the image! And boy do those reviews speak well for the game. Let me take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you once again for all your support!

Capturing the essence of over 100 reviews is no easy task, but I've put together the following summary, with links back to 27 of the original reviews. (If you see a lot of {LINK REMOVED}, click the title of this post.)

A slew of reviews highlight the uniqueness of the game, saying it’s β€œa refreshing change to see a new game form in VR”, that there’s β€œnothing like this in VR”, and that it’s an β€œinstant classic”. Others write that it’s β€œsome of the most creative VR gameplay of any VR game”, that it’s β€œnothing short of genius”, and that β€œthis dev is some sort of mad genius”. Some write that it’s β€œa revolution in Virtual Reality” because β€œthe motion system is completely revolutionary” and that it has the β€œpotential to create a whole new genre in VR-Games”.

According to the reviewers, what makes it so innovative is that β€œbeing able to actually walk through the entire game in your play space is just mind boggling and super immersive”, making it β€œone of those rare mind-blowing VR experiences”. Some say that the game β€œdoes otherworldly things with your mental perception” that β€œmakes you forget you are in VR” and that as a result, β€œthe immersion level is off the chart” and it β€œtakes vr immersion to a new level”.

For some reviewers, that level of immersion made this VR adventure the β€œmost ingenious and thrilling VR game”, speculating that β€œif Steven Spielberg or George Lucas made VR games instead of movies ... this is the VR game they would come up with” because it β€œcaptures perfectly the whole Indiana Jones vibe”, so that β€œif you want to feel like Indiana Jones, this is the closest you could ever get”.

Overall, lots of reviewers say it’s β€œone of the best VR experiences” and β€œone of the greatest VR experiences of all time”. Several focus on room-scale, calling it β€œthe best Roomscale VR Game” they’ve played and the β€œthe best room scale experience out there”. Some say it’s the β€œ2nd best roomscale game” next to Half-Life: Alyx and that they β€œhaven't had this much fun since playing Half Life Alyx”. Others think Eye of the Temple surpasses it and is simply the β€œbest VR game”. One reviewer didn’t limit it to VR and said: β€œI’ve been playing video games for 30+ years, and finding ALL the secrets in Eye of the Temple was easily the most satisfying moment I’ve ever had in a game!”.

You can also see all the reviews on Steam here.

I am blown away and humbled by the response. What do you say? Do a game that's described in these terms by so many reviewers deserve a nomination for VR Game of the Year? That's for you to decide!

All the best,
Rune
