Hiya folks! It's been a few days since Farewell North released and I'm still getting used to the idea that it's out there. I've been reading the reviews over and over every day (please keep them coming, it's a huge help) and the response has far exceeded my wildest dreams! But, the feedback on the music in particular has been nothing short of phenomenal, and that's really all thanks to the work of our composer John Konsolakis who brought the soundscape to life.
John has just released the soundtrack on Steam so if you'd like to own your very own copy then you can now do so with a 10% launch discount! Purchasing the soundtrack directly supports John's work and gives you lifetime access to over 90 minutes of original music.
Hey all! I've just released a patch with a few more fixes based on your feedback:
- fixed a bush on Teaghlach that had a rude habit of trapping sheep and not letting them go - fixed an issue causing the first "My Heart's in the Highlands" cutscene to re-trigger if you canoe back to the cave - fixed a missing Simplified Chinese character in the Gaelic Subtitle modal
Patch Notes for August 19th
Hiya folks! Just a few fixes and quality of life improvements based on your feedback. In this patch we have:
- The Gaelic Subtitle modal when starting a new game now shows a preview of the subtitles based on your current On/Off selection - Fixed a Simplified Chinese translation mistake on the Gaelic Subtitle modal - Fixed a floating power cable at the Uair farmhouse going to nowhere depending on the time state - Fixed a strange animation when Cailey gets off her bike while off-screen - Fixed an issue with Cailey petting the air and not moving after a certain cutscene
Please keep the feedback coming, it's been an absolute joy to read all of the reviews!
First Patch! (v1.0.19)
Hey everyone, we're absolutely thrilled with the response to Farewell North so far, and hope you're enjoying running around the Scottish isles with Chesley and Cailey!
This first patch addresses some minor issues that have been raised, and we'll continue to keep an eye out for any issues you're facing.
Changelist:
Adds the Gaelic translations for the "My Heart's in the Highlands" lyrics
Adds a missing collider on the lighthouse doors
Fixes a rare soft-lock issue in the final island
Thank you again for the wonderful feedback, your reviews have been a real joy to read! If you haven't left a review yet, please consider writing one as it's a tremendous help for us <3
Farewell North is OUT NOW!
Farewell North is OUT NOW!
For the past four years I've spent every single day working on this game; a deeply personal, atmospheric and emotional adventure about a woman and her dog saying farewell to the place they grew up. I'm so proud of what the team and I have created, and I'm absolutely thrilled to say that it's out now!
The early press reviews have been so heartwarming, but it's your opinion that matters most, and I cannot wait to hear what you think. So, without further ado, I hope you'll join Chesley and Cailey on their adventures through the Scottish isles, and restore colour to their world!
I have one more favour to ask of you though: once you've had a chance to play, please take a moment to leave a review on Steam. Believe it or not, reviews are the best thing you can do to increase the chances that I'll get to do this all over again, and continue to make games.
Thank you for all the support these last four years, and enjoy Farewell North!
Farewell North Release Update
Hey folks!
I know you've been eagerly awaiting the release of Farewell North and, believe me, so have I! It still feels surreal that this journey is so close to coming to an end and I can't wait to get it out there for you. I do have some slightly bad news to share today, but don't worry, you will get to chase after sticks and herd some coos as our good boy Chesley very soon!
Farewell North will now release on August 16th
As you may know, Steam is a super competitive market for indies. It's extremely hard to get visibility even on normal days, and I recently learned several other great indie games will all be releasing on the same day that I initially picked out for Farewell North. I've been pouring my heart and soul into this game for years now, and in hopes of giving it the best chance of finding its audience, I have decided to delay the release for only 1 day to August 16th.
I hope you understand and that this one additional day isn't too long of a wait!

Release Date Announcement Trailer!
Heya folks!
It's been quite an adventure developing Farewell North these last four years. We're not quite at the finish line just yet, but I am thrilled to announce that Farewell North now has a release date - August 15, 2024!
With the release date announcement comes a brand new trailer with never before seen footage, and a few other big announcements as well - make sure you watch through to the end ;)
I'm very delighted that with this trailer we're finally able to share the theme song for Farewell North, "My Heart's in the Highlands". Originally written by Robert Burns in 1789, "My Heart's in the Highlands" is the poem from which Farewell North takes its name. Our composer, John Konsolakis, put together a modern rendition just for Farewell North featuring the voice of celebrated Scottish folk singer, Siobhan Miller.
This song isn't just for the trailer though! Together with John and Siobhan we've come up with a very special feature that I'm excited for you to discover for yourself in-game, so please look forward to that.
Anyways, now that we've got a date I've got work to do so I'd better get back to it!
All the best, Kyle
Devlog #33: Facial Animation and Introducing the Main Character
One of the trickiest aspects of Farewell North's development has been bringing the main character to life in a way that players are able to relate and connect with her. I didn't realize it when I started development, but as a (mostly) solo indie dev it turns out that this is no small task, and for the past three years I've been doing everything I can to give her personality: animations, behaviours, voice acting, just to name a few.
But something was always missing...
In this devlog (the 33rd in the series!) I'll show you how I added eye tracking, lip sync and full facial animation to Farewell North, and finally reveal her name plus the meaning behind it.
