Release Date & Free Week
Hey everyone,
We're excited to announce that Fear The Wolves will officially release on February 6th!
After months of work throughout the early access period, we're thrilled to deliver Fear The Wolves' sixth major update, introducing a wealth of new content:
Brand new artifact system
A new mutant: the Wolf Matriarch
Anomalous lockdown areas
Two new artifacts
Wolf Matriarch Heart
Spore Artifact
New point of interest: Stadium
Wolve behaviour improvement. They can now break doors.
New customization set
Server capacity and location improvements
Artifacts are new and rare items that you can obtain by killing a wolf matriarch (to get its heart), or in the new highly radioactive anomalous lockdown areas. The matriarch heart allows you to summon friendly mutant wolves twice to help you fight enemy survivors.
The spore artifact gives you an enhanced vision mutation, allowing you to see nearby enemies through walls for a brief moment; Just enough to position yourself for a perfect ambush!
These new items should add a lot of tension and diversity throughout matches, as well as offering new strategies in late game. Waiting for the evacuation hidden in a bush isn’t such a good idea anymore when you have a pack of wolves rushing towards you!
We plan to officially deploy this massive update on February 6th, but keep an eye on the game in the days prior to launch, since we might do a soft launch a few days in advance to make sure everything is as smooth as we want it to be.
The release of Fear The Wolves is also an exciting opportunity for the team to share the vastly improved version of the game to the world! In order to celebrate the release, and allow everyone to discover the game and the many new features introduced throughout the early access period, Fear The Wolves will be entirely FREE from February 6th to 12th!
Bring your friends and dive into a decaying Chernobyl next week! And if you enjoy the improvements and our take on the Battle Royale genre, Fear The Wolves is also 50% off from February 6th to 12th! After February 12, you won’t be able to play for free anymore. Make sure to buy the game while it is discounted to continue to play!

The Unified Patch
Fear The Wolves, our FPS battle royale, continues development in Early Access with the new Unified Update, out today. This huge patch focuses on improving the player experience with faster queues and more intense matches, as well as adding much-requested features such as a new waiting room, vaulting, voice chat, and more. Learn all about it in our latest featurette, releasing alongside the patch today.
https://youtu.be/V021A5jQhPs
We'll be monitoring very closely your reports about this new update to be ready to fix any issue that you might encounter. Please post your feedback in the Steam discussion hub and our official forum.
The update’s namesake is the new Unified game mode, which makes playing as a duo the default and puts all players together in the same matchmaking pool. Those who want to play solo can do so, and hoard all the gear they find for themselves without having to split it with a partner, but may find themselves outnumbered. This is just another new way Fear the Wolves is creating a unique battle royale experience, alongside our radiation system, treasure maps, PvE elements and much more.
Also included in the Unified Update is a completely reworked on-boarding experience to go along with a new deployment phase. It adds contextual hints as well as a revamped in-game UI that should help new players navigate the complex changes and tweaks Fear the Wolves has made to the battle royale formula.
Finally, squad voice chat and vaulting make their debut in the Unified Update. Both are vital to getting the game ready for final launch in early 2019, and greatly improve the gameplay experience, particularly for those matching randomly with other players online.
You can read the full patchnotes for the update below.
The Fear the Wolves Unified Update is out today. Fear the Wolves is in Steam Early Access now and the full version will be available in early 2019.
UNIFIED UPDATE PATCH NOTES
Vaulting now available:
Overcome small obstacles
Climb onto higher objects
Vault in and out of buildings through windows
Window frame destruction has been reworked to fit these new actions
New unified mode:
Default mode is now duos
Duos and solos play together in the same games
Please note that duos must split the limited loot, while solos will have it all for themselves. We think playing solo will be more difficult, but an entertaining challenge for those that prefer it.
You will be matchmade with a random teammate if you are alone and not specifically queuing for solo play
No more 3 or 4 person squads
Matches are played on 9km2 sections randomly picked from full map
Matches will have a lower maximum player count, around 40
Halved the number of vehicles to compensate.
This will also improve server performance, and we believe is a good general balancing change to help vehicles feel more valuable and useful
Voice chat available for duos
Settings available:
“Push to talk” or “always on” with push or mute bind, respectively
Volume options
Visual indicator when a teammate is speaking in-game
Usable in lobby if a squad is formed
New waiting room system: pre-match
As soon as a player clicks play, they are spawned on the map
You can roam freely, loot weapons, kill wolves or other players encountered
You respawn to a random location on the map if killed
As soon as there are 2 players in pre-match, a 5 minute counter starts
Match starts if the minimum squads number is reached – currently this is 3 squads (3-6 players), but will be adjusted depending on matchmaking times.
After 5 minutes, a vote to force start the match is offered to players, if they agree to force start, the match will start. Otherwise, after a further five minutes, the match is force started anyway.
This means you won’t have to wait more than 10 minutes for a game to begin now. Please give us feedback on this system once you’ve tried it, especially if you play at non-peak times.
New deployment system
No more helicopter phase or parachuting
Villages on the map are spawn points (you can’t spawn in high tier loot areas)
Once the minimum number of players is reached to start a game, the map interface opens and players can select their spawn point
Duos must agree on the same spawn point or they are randomly deployed between the two spawn points selected
Reworked on-boarding and new player experience:
Revamped UI
New health bar
New armor indicator
Open your inventory to see easily which parts of your body are the best protected
New radiation protection indicator
Get a clear view of your current protection at all times
Reworked oxygen tank indicator
Reformatted notifications
New squad health bar
Revamped item tooltips:
Weapon comparison tool
Backpack / oxygen tank comparison tool
Outfits comparison tool
Extended descriptions on pick-up prompts (the text that appears when you highlight an object in the world)
Dynamic tip system added
Many dynamic triggers have been added based on various gameplay situations (low health, high radiation, consumables owned, shrinking system, etc.)
They will provide useful advice to new players
“Hide dynamic tooltip” option available in settings for more advanced players
Performance optimization:
Some additional performance optimization on weather
Some render optimization
Graphical improvements
Removed the dynamic day-time hours and replaced them with predefined day-time presets randomly selected for each game
These are morning, early afternoon, and end of the day.
This will also change strategies for each game based on what time of day is set.
Prematch happens at sunrise.
Following new standard of map size, number of vehicles has been reduced by two
Gain on server performances will be expected from this too
Other improvements
Sounds
Hold breath sound added
Different if aiming with or without gas mask
Gunfire can now be heard from further away
Secret stash map sound added

Removed damage direction marker for Wolf attacks

Fear the Wolves Team
The Treasure Map Update is live!
Dear all,
As we announced last week, Fear the Wolves expands today with the release of the massive Treasure Map Update. We’re really happy to share with you the change log for this update which includes multiple new features, including a new weapon and enhancements to existing systems.
Added in this patch are a number of new looting rules and mechanisms to keep players discovering new elements of the map. Secret Stashes are now hidden throughout the ruins, containing high-tier loot that will give you an advantage over other scavengers, unlockable only with a treasure map findable in the wilderness.
Some buildings are also now boarded up, requiring the fire axe to break down the door and gather the goods inside. Waiting inside may be the new DMR SOK-94 sniper rifle, optimal at medium to long range.
Upgrades have also been applied to many of the game’s premier features. A full pass has been made on wolf behaviour and balancing, making them far more dangerous to players and a true PvE challenge.
Singular wolves will now attempt to sneak up on players, and packs are much more aggressive at protecting their territory and chasing down fleeing players, with more health and enhanced attack patterns. This joins tweaks to weapon balance, shooting feeling, and the addition of rooftop helicopter extractions to make Fear the Wolves better than ever before.
These changes join a host of quality of life tweaks, bug fixes, and minor additions - such as new end and tutorial screens, an improved drop experience, and additional sounds - to answer player demands and improve the game for everyone.
The NVIDIA Highlight system has also been integrated, allowing for automatic recording of big plays and huge kills for easy sharing on various platforms.
As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any feedback or technical issues that you want to alert us to. You can find the details of this patch below.

Fear the Wolves Team
Fourth Update Releases Next Week
Hi everyone,
Fear The Wolves Early Access has started a month and half ago and we'd like to give you an update about how we are doing so far and what's coming soon.
First we'd like to extend a huge thank you to all of you who have played and posted feedback over social media and the official forums - we read all of it and it is the grassroots of our future updates.
We're well aware that the amount of players right now isn't as high as we'd have liked, making it difficult to deliver on the 100-player battle royale experience we had in mind at launch. We've worked a lot in the last weeks to adapt the gameplay and bring you more fluid and intense battles, while also reducing the matchmaking time.
Treasure maps leading to hidden stashes - coming in next week update
In our first update, we introduced small shrinking scenarios adapting the gameplay for smaller pool of players, and update three added the option to queue while spectating. We’ve also worked closely with players to improve the server performance, by finding the best location for our servers in Asia for example. We'll continue to work on delivering a smooth experience to all of you!
Locked buildings that need to be broken open with an axe to uncover high tier loot - coming in next update
The team is carefully crafting new ways to improve the overall flow of the game and bring you a truly unique experience in a decaying Chernobyl. Meaningful changes and updates take time, but we have great expectations with our newest patch to improve mid-game through advanced looting mechanics.
This next update is planned for next week and is packed with content which we’re really happy to share a first glimpse of today:
Rework of the shooting feeling based on your feedback
A new weapon: DMR SOK-94 for mid to long range combat
Locked buildings that need to be broken open with an axe to uncover high tier loot
Hidden stashes around the map, accessible through the discovery of treasure maps
Improved wolf behavior and rebalanced resistance
Dozens of other smaller features and bug fixes
Points of interest have also been reworked in this update, here is a small glimpse at what you will encounter in the Zone moving forwards.
Anomalous forest
Old dam
Quarry
Thanks once again for your support and feedback - we hope to see you soon in game!
The Fear The Wolves Team
Fear the Wolves - 3rd Update Patch is live!
Fear the Wolves Early Access update brings fresh content, gameplay tweaks and performance optimization
We are deploying today a new update for their Battle Royale FPS Fear the Wolves, now available in Steam Early Access. Fear the Wolves drops players, in squads or as lone wolves, into the oppressive environments of a radiation-ravaged Chernobyl. The classic Battle Royale mode forces them to fight to be the last man standing.
From the launch of the early access, Vostok Games has been looking after the feedback from the community which has allowed the team to roll out multiple updates and improvements - but that was only a start, as dev team continues improving their game on a regular basis along the Early Access period. Today’s update is first dedicated to performance optimization – many players should see a significant improvement during their gameplay sessions, while the developers continue working hard to make sure Fear the Wolves runs smoothly and reaches higher performance on all configs as the Early Access goes on.
Maps have also received significant care, with more landmarks and topography tweaks, not only strengthening even more the immersion into the dark Chernobyl atmosphere, but also bringing more intensity and challenge during the entire gameplay session, as well as offering a better overall balancing (loot repartition, weapons…) - either games are launched with high or lower number of players.
More additions like new languages available, queuing for new game while being in spectator mode, improved visuals, and more content will complete this new update.

We’d like to thank you for all your feedback over Fear The Wolves’ first week in Early Access. We’re listening, and our team continues to work hard on bugfixes, optimization and gameplay balance.
Today, we have some sizeable patch notes to share with you! This update focuses on getting players into games faster with smaller scale scenarios with faster pace during low population hours, a reworking of the parachute system for more options of where to drop, as well as balance changes to weapons, items and loot tables and three more languages (Simplified Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian). More languages will arrive soon!
To change your language, you have to right click on the game in your Steam library, then go to Properties > Languages and pick your language.
Thanks again for your continued support! Read the full notes below.
