Frostpunk 2 | City Unbound Ep. 9 - The Heat, The Pit and The Serenity

Watch new special episode of “City Unbound”, where you will find more about some new features that arrived in the latest update.

Epic whiteouts, mass migration

As we all know, Frostpunk 2 can be a challenging game. Since its premiere, we’ve received a lot of feedback from you on what could be improved to make it even harder. That’s why in the upcoming patch, we’ve introduced a few new challenges to the game, like epic whiteouts that will take some time to pass. There’s also a recurring migration crisis that will force you to find shelter for a constant stream of desperate newcomers.

Heat Management System, Serenity mode

Of course, just like The Steward of New London, we’re not completely heartless. Apart from new obstacles to tackle, we’ll throw in a few conveniences. The most important one is an advanced heat management system. It will allow you to pinpoint places in your city that need more warmth while at the same time sacrificing other, less demanding districts and buildings.

That’s not all, we also have something for those who would like to tackle Frostpunk 2 with less pressure. A new addition called the Serenity Mode, will give a formidable headstart while starting a new game. Abundance of resources as well as toning down the conflicts inside the city will let you familiarize yourself with the game without the need for a rocky start.

We hope that they will keep your game interesting while you wait for even more future additions.

As we still want to develop the game with our community, you can leave your feedback about new update in the comments. This is always a big hint for us in which direction we should proceed.

Stay warm!

Free Major Content Update is Live!

Hello Citizens!

As we continue our commitment to developing Frostpunk 2, we’d like to turn up the generator’s heat a little and give you an overview of the new Free Major Content Update and what awaits you in New London - starting today.

But before we get into there is something more important we need to say. Your feedback not only gives us valuable insights into what we can improve, but also sparks new ideas in our creative furnace every day. Without you, it would never have been possible to expand the Frostpunk universe as far as we have today.

On top of all the DLCs that await you in the future, we are committed to delivering additional Free Major Content Updates for Frostpunk 2, creating new opportunities for the franchise - just as we did with the Artbook & Anthology Kickstarter, and of course, develop recently announced Frostpunk 1886. Each of these titles has its own dedicated team, pouring heart and effort into every detail.

So here’s a message from all of us to you:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

We’re now reaching another milestone in Frostpunk 2’s journey with the release of Free Major Content Update. Once you’ve played it, don’t forget to leave your review on Steam!

This update introduces a tons of new content, including new heat mechanics, brand new map in utopia mode, and challenges with new quests and storylines (more information below).

Check out the new trailer on YouTube:

Patch 1.3 Highlights

New Map: The Pit

Large map with distinctive "proto-crater" pit counted as mountain terrain, built around the remnants of a failed Generator project.

Sandbox location available in Utopia Builder mode as a starting location or a Frostland colonization site, offering more variation to the gameplay.

Tales from the Frostland

Narrative-driven optional challenges designed to deepen Utopia Builder’s replayability and storytelling.

Take part in new challenges, each introducing a unique quest and storyline. Multiple Tales can be combined in a single playthrough. Complete a Tale to unlock a unique Monument Hub to “decorate” your city, but be careful: failure results in game over!

Important: All Tales are designed to be easily expanded and modded by the community in the future!

Overhauled Heating System

The biggest systemic change since launch: localized heat management bringing deeper strategy and consequences.

Starting with a redesigned Generator UI for better control and feedback, now you can manage temperature by district, with unique local effects, and consequences when heat is lacking, such as sickness, injuries, or even death. Use the brand-new Heatmap View to visualize district temperature, insulation, heat sources, and proximity bonuses.

The changes affect more than just temperature, they also impact your citizens. They now react to heating shortages through negotiations, protests, or praise. Deaths are now tied to specific factions and communities.

We’ve expanded the Idea Tree and laws, adding:

  • 9 new research topics
  • 2 new buildings
  • 3 rebalanced technologies
  • 1 new law
  • 5 reworked laws

Serenity Mode

A return of the beloved Frostpunk mode, offering a more relaxed playthrough.

We’ve brought back a well-loved mode for those who want to explore the Frostlands without too much stress. Serenity Mode includes:

  • Gentler weather
  • Abundant resources
  • Shorter whiteouts
  • No Fervour system (minimal protests, no faction conflict)

This mode is fully compatible with other difficulty presets (e.g., Survivor, Extreme).

Core Game Improvements

Subtle but impactful refinements across the board to improve playability.

We've rebalanced the prologue for smoother pacing, added a midpoint start option, and updated quests. Tutorials for key systems, such as District Temperature and Community Actions, have been improved.

City visuals now show a denser population, clearer building visibility, and better roadfinding. Districts have improved shapes, there's now an option for manual Plaza placement, and you can use a legacy urban layout if you prefer.

Frostkit 1.0: Modding Tools Leave Beta

A huge step forward for the modding community as Frostkit goes live!

For our final big change, we’ve saved the cherry on top - Frostkit. In close collaboration with our amazing modding community, we’ve developed a tool to simplify and empower your beautiful, creative work. We can't wait to see your creations, and how they will shape Frostpunk 2 in the future!

Now, we’re proud to announce that Frostkit is officially out of beta, with features such as:

  • Search bar
  • Mod menu visual overhaul
  • Play-in-editor mode
  • Improved loading times
  • Tutorials

    And much more!

    New Frostpunk game announcement

    The journey so far

While the road ahead of Frostpunk 2 is filled with Free Major Content Updates, a console launch, and DLCs – and we’re extremely excited to show you in what ways our grand strategy / society survival game can still surprise you – we’ve also always wanted to continue our work on the city-builder survival experience that is Frostpunk 1. Both titles will continue to evolve side by side, offering players diverse and engaging gameplay experiences.

    Looking back into the future

As our internal Liquid Engine, that the first game was created on, is no longer in development, we’ve been looking for other ways to further expand upon Frostpunk for years now. When working on Frostpunk 2 in Unreal Engine 5, the limitations of our own Engine became that much more apparent but it also made us realize we could finally go back to when it all began – the moment the Great Storm came over New London in 1886.

With that in mind, we’re extremely excited to announce that we’ve already started development on a new Frostpunk project – one that recreates the experience of the original game in UE. That is also why we went for Frostpunk 1886. Let us know what you think about it in the comments!

    What are we aiming for?

Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer. Something that could be a great introduction to the world of Frostpunk for newcomers, but also a title that die-hard fans of the game would love to play on repeat.

We don't want to simply recreate the first game in a new engine – it’s to build upon the original experience. That’s why we plan to implement tons of new content, new mechanics, new events, technologies, and buildings – all with the aim of creating new ways to shape your society, including a completely new Purpose path in addition to the existing Faith and Order paths.

UE also gives us the opportunity to expand upon the world of the first Frostpunk with completely new content in the future, such as DLCs. Additionally, something you've been requesting for years will soon be possible: mod support. We know how long you’ve been requesting it, and we couldn’t be happier to finally make it happen!

    Legacy we are proud of

We don’t want to change the core premise of the game – the survival of the people of New London – but rather to recreate that experience with an even greater focus on the elements that made it meaningful in the first place.

While respecting the legacy of Frostpunk, we’re confident the new additions will only enrich the experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Now, we don’t want to leave you hanging without something more concrete – so here it is: we’re committed to releasing the game in 2027. Having games developed by us release more often than once every 5+ years is one of the ambitious changes we’ve taken upon ourselves – and this title is the first step toward making that happen.

For now, we’re leaving you with a tease (which we hope piqued your interest!) – but you can expect more info, including the game’s title, a first look at gameplay, and behind-the-scenes content, in the second half of the year as work on the game progresses.

    Remember. The City Must...

The World of Frostpunk: Artbook & Anthology Kickstarter campaign is live!

Since its release in 2018, the city-survival game Frostpunk captivated millions of gamers worldwide. The story of humanity’s epic struggle against an icy apocalypse inspired its creators not only to deliver the game’s sequel but also to expand its rich lore.

After a success of polish language version of the book, and a lot of discussions, we realized that publishing it through the Kickstarter platform will be the best way to share this experience further and perfect opportunity to add exclusive items! Frostpunk franchise is very close to our hearts, and we wanted to publish it independently, with full creative control and available for all, at the same time.

Now we are thrilled to announce that the long awaited campaign is live!

    Aesthetics of Desolation Artbook

Take a deep dive into the creative journey behind Frostpunk. Learn about the conceptual foundation of Frostpunk 2, the reality of post-apocalyptic survival of society, and the transformation of frostlands over three decades, capturing the legacy of New London.

    Tales from the Frostland Anthology

The world of Frostpunk is not only about harsh conditions and never-ending fields of snow. Although sparsely populated, the frostland does not lack fascinating characters that struggle to live another day.

Discover human resilience and drama through four intense stories:

Warm Flesh by Jakub Nowak: A gripping power struggle unfolds in New London’s Council Hall.
Then We Shall See Face to Face by Janusz Cyran: H.G. Wells ventures into danger beyond the city.
The Cold Children by Anna Kańtoch: Mute, cold-immune children bring both hope and tragedy.
Requiem to Mr. S by Robert M. Wegner: A merchant revives Shakespeare’s works in a frozen wasteland.

    Stretch goals

We want you to enjoy each item available in our campaign to the fullest and together we can make it happen! As we achieve each next funding goal, more and more items, features, and enhancements will be added to the existing physical pledge tiers. All you have to do is pledge at least €45 and then sit tight. As the campaign reaches one checkpoint after another, things will just get more and more interesting.

    Frostpunk 2 Roadmap Update

    Stewards of New London,

Attention, for the Administration of New London bears tidings of utmost importance.
Since the fateful September past, our City has endured, prospered, and expanded its dominion. In pursuit of greater foresight, our vigilant expeditionists have charted a course through the treacherous frostland. As fresh intelligence reaches us, we are pleased to provide an update on their tireless endeavors.

    The road ahead

Most notably, through meticulous observation, our scouts have refined their estimations of when the waypoints—previously marked on the map—might be reached. Though the icy vastness remains unforgiving and whiteouts ever unpredictable, they now anticipate key milestones aligning with the changing seasons.

    These are as follows:

    • May 8th - A day to be remembered: a Free Major Content Update that will adjust the City’s management, paying homage to the order established by the first New Londoners.
    • Summer – A grand undertaking: the Console Port.
    • Autumn – Reaching the Spectrum DLC, which may help us learn more about ourselves and the people of our great city in more ways than one…

Moreover, scouts report that the arrival of Spring shall bring significant developments for the people of New London. They have also urged the Administration to observe a day of reflection on April 24th, in honor of the seventh anniversary of our first great expedition—an endeavor once guided by a departed leader of unwavering resolve.

May light forever grace their steadfast soul.

    Our thanks

As ever, the Administration owes its strength not merely to those who govern but to you, the citizens who shape our course. Your steadfast support, insights, and—indeed—your grievances are the very lifeblood of progress.

A greater tomorrow is within reach, so long as we endure.

We shall not falter, for The City Must Not Fall!
