Patch 1.1.1 - Steam Achievements! Happy New Year~

A follow up to the past patch, thanks to the new engine, we now have... drum roll... achievements via Steam! Ta-da!

This is a follow up to the prior patch (you can see info of that update here) and mostly focuses on making sure all the achievement stuff is up and working.

Steam Achievements

Achievements are checked once a minute, so if you open your past saves, just give it a minute or so and you should have them automatically unlock. You can also get your achievements unlocked on any save file, so if you have a separate save where you got some things done and another where you didn't, you will still get all achievements unlocked from those individual save files.

Other Changes

Additionally, the following has been adjusted...

  • Fixed some more typos
  • Added a screen with additional credits for people for EasyRPG Player and help with the achievement integration
  • C7: Added checks and handling to make sure that you have these achievements in case you met the criteria but it didn't activate properly
  • C9: Fixed issue where the Lime Green achievement wouldn't necessarily show as unlocked in the achievement area

Save Files

If your save files don't appear to be loading, sorry, that's an unfortunate side effect of this change; they're just in a different folder! Fortunately, follow these steps and they will be back and running as they haven't been deleted.

  1. Right click the game in your library, go "manage" and then "browse local files."
  2. Navigate to the "Data" folder.
  3. Your save files should be there as Save.lsd! Drag it to the main folder and the game will detect them properly!

Outro

That's all! As mentioned with the past update, if you want to see any merch we now have, you can see here. But besides that... Thank you for your time, and see you again with... Garenburg Penitence!

Patch 1.1.0 - Engine Updates, Merch, & Future

Hello all!

This update is a pretty big one at the same time as pretty simple; it massively improves some features with the update at the same time as being not that different. If you already played through Garenburg Woods, you don't need to worry much about this update. That said, there is something planned you should still see that'll be coming!

Engine Improvements

This main update puts us on EasyRPG Player, a project that allows the game to run much better on modern platforms. This will mean that this should run more smoothly than before, have much more options and settings and features for toggling, and make it overall a better and less archaic experience. Huge thanks to EasyRPG Player for their great work with everything!

Thanks to EasyRPG Player, the following settings and features are now present...

  • Video settings: Toggle full screen, window zoom, FPS counter, V-Sync, stretching, scaling methods, resolution, and pausing when focus is lost. I recommend leaving "Pause when focus lost" on. You no longer need to select windowed or full screen at launch, you can just toggle whenever you'd like!
  • Audio settings: You can manually toggle the volume of sound effects and music now.
  • Input settings: You can now change key bindings and gamepad support. And you can also use Fast Forward, which will make your movement and the game speed way quicker if you want to!

Additionally, the following has been adjusted...

  • Fixed various typos and grammar issues
  • C8: Fixed the color of dialogue text when Vincent is speaking to match his prior dialogue; this was an unintentional oversight

Sorry for the inconvenience! The folder structure moved slightly which offset things a little...

Achievements Plan

Finally, there IS a planned update that will add in Steam Achievements! You'll be able to finally have the achievements you earn ingame on Steam! This only wasn't in it before because, well, the game is made in RPG Maker 2000. But I'm currently investigating the potential integration of Steam with it through EasyRPG Player. As of such, you may see some achievements for the game but it also showing nobody having them and them being unusable... If this doesn't work out, I'll adjust this post, but hopefully it ends up getting added because I'd really love to have them in this!

Merchandise

Other than that, if you were curious of the art for this little update, here it is below. It's actually for a t-shirt; we're now selling merchandise at a little online shop! For more information, you can check it out here. The merchandise is made-per-order and it was mainly set up because I wanted my own merch, so...

Other than that, thank you for reading! Garenburg Penitence is still in development and should have its own news very soon...

Stay tuned for more information!

Patch 1.0.3 - Minor Tweaks and Bug Fixes

Hello!

Small update. Not a big patch. Mostly just adjusting a few things I'd been meaning to and... didn't!

Patch 1.0.3

  • Removed an attack from Gown that it was never supposed to have and does basically nothing that was left in due to an oversight
  • C7: Changed the music box music to the new track "Brother." This track is also present in the Bandcamp / Spotify uploads of the soundtrack, it's due to copyright as the original track was an arrangement of something.
  • C7: Redid how the shadows cause harm to the player during the music box scene. Previously, they would do 100 damage to the party and give a one second delay before the both it and the player can resume moving, but as a result, it would cause a delay in the music and make everything no longer sync properly. Instead, they will do 75 damage to the entire party and move away from the player, but there is no time buffer for the player to better avoid being harmed again.
  • C7: Fixed bug where the save box still appears in RISK Mode if you do not use it during the music box scene.
  • C7: Music box scene is now longer and has another color tint at the end, initial position for shadows are also moved
  • C7: Shadows are no longer transparent during the music box scene
  • Credits images are now the proper resolution and remade (they look nearly the same though)
  • Slight adjustment to credits names to account for the names of said people changing
  • Changed the game icon

That is all! Thank you for reading, and take care!

A Free Short Garenburg Fishing Spinoff!

Hello!

This is a small and short little announcement, but there is now a free spinoff of Garenburg available. It's really short (around 20-30 minutes of gameplay) and was made in a little under 2 weeks, so if you'd like to give it a try, it's there! It was actually released a little bit ago, but I neglected to mention it here.

You can find the download for the game, Charmolypi: Ordinary Sunrises, on Itch.io available here.

As for other projects, development of Garenburg Penitence has been going well and a new trailer of it should release soon as the game finishes up all the main content and moves into playtesting and polishing before finally launching. And as for Pink Eyes, it'll still be a bit before some more information for it unfortunately as it is on the backburner, but it's not forgotten. It's just not time for that yet, as Garenburg Penitence takes priority.

That's all for now, thank you for your time!

- Mireille

Garenburg Woods: Pink Eyes

Garenburg Woods: Pink Eyes will be an additional story.

It will release at some point after Garenburg Penitence: The Riflebird, as that game is a much bigger priority and I would like to finish that before going back completely to Garenburg Woods.

More information will be available eventually, Pink Eyes may take a good while before it is even close to completion as still has a significantly long way to go from here. Everything with this is also still heavily subject to change as a result.

Aside from that, Garenburg Woods will now remain at the price cut.

We also have a Discord server for a lot of updates on future projects.

Thank you for reading.

1st Anniversary, Price Reduction, Free Copy of Garenburg Penitence!

Hi!

After much consideration, Garenburg Woods will have a permanent price reduction to $2.99 USD.

In the end, my goal is to make a game and one I am happy with as well as one that others can play and experience for themselves. A price reduction helps make the game more accessible, and that is something I value more than monetary gain.

The $2.99 price point is also going to be my goal going forwards for many other games I made in the future. Garenburg Penitence: The Riflebird (the next Garenburg game) will follow suite.

To say thanks to anybody who has already purchased Garenburg Woods, you can get a free copy of Garenburg Penitence once it releases and be in the special thanks for the game! To do so, please join our official Discord server and make a ticket in #tickets with a link to your Steam profile.

This change will take place on September 29th, the 1st anniversary of the game release, and please be sure to make the ticket before that date so we can make sure we can get you on the list of people to give the free copy to.

There's going to be other surprises as this month continues to celebrate the first anniversary, so stay tuned for more!

Cheers!

Patch 1.0.2

Small patch update to fix a few little things!

  • Slight alterations to dialogue with the rocks at the beginning to not be misleading.
  • Adjustment to the Tape 7 entrance to be more distinct.
  • Added a save prompt after getting any ending before the intro cutscene plays again.
  • Fixed a bug that would play music for a split moment after getting Tape 10.
  • Fixed some typos on the achievements.
  • Renamed Achievement 25 to the proper, intended name.

Achievements Guide

An achievements guide has now been made! It should help for finding the tapes as well as some other secrets. You can find it here.

Garenburg Penitence?

While not specifically this game, Garenburg Penitence, the next game in the series (Steam page here for information), will be releasing with a level editor. It will also include a few bonus levels made using the editor, and this will include an official Garenburg Woods-themed level! That's all.

Garenburg Penitence Announcement / Garenburg Woods Planned Content Update

Hello!

Here's some news about the state of Garenburg.

Garenburg Penitence: The Riflebird

The second game in the Garenburg series is in development!

The gameplay is firing spheres and matching colors. This game is heavily influenced and inspired by a few titles, including Luxor, Sparkle, Tumblebugs and other marble popper games from the 2000s, Irisu Syndrome, and Serial Experiments Lain (for the PlayStation 1). I realize those are weird inspirations, but they are there for a reason.

For those who have played through Garenburg Woods, I feel that it is important to mention that Garenburg Penitence is a very different game in gameplay, format, and style. You may not enjoy the games for the same reasons. This new entry will be very story-driven however, and if you paid attention at the campfire stories, some story elements may be familiar with the Garenburg Penitence. This new game will be going into much more detail about the events that had happened during the Lunacy, and flesh out the world further. It is not required to play Garenburg Woods to understand the story of Garenburg Penitence.

For much more information about the game, please see the links below that go into more detail about it!

Garenburg Woods: Planned Future Content

Garenburg Woods will see new content at some point in the future. I'm not quite sure when as I haven't begun working on it yet, but I have been planning out what I want to do for it. What will be added is a few QOL changes and more notably, a large, post-game dungeon that will offer a different experience. It will require the true ending being completed, include all previous bosses and enemies, as well as new ones and be climbing through a giant tree.

This may take a while before it is finished due to focus being on Garenburg Penitence, but I felt like it was important to note. This idea was originally for the base release but was scrapped due to complications, scope, and time, so I'm very excited to add it in. It will be a free update.

In addition to this, a patch will roll out sometime in March to add a few fixes to Garenburg Woods and adjustments. I will be looking into Steam trading cards and emotes as well to be added.

Closing

We have a Twitter and Reddit! They are for mainly just news and answering questions. They are r/garenburg and @Creatalsoft and will have more updates on these games in the future.

Well, that's pretty much it. I'm quite excited to continue working on these projects. Thank you for reading, and I'm excited to share more information in the near future. Cheers!
