New Leaderboards Created!

Accompanying the custom party sizes new to v1.04 are leaderboards for tracking high scores from games played on Novice, Medium, Expert & Master with non-standard parties :)



Playing as a solo, duet or trio of hero pieces represents a fresh challenge and everyone's best performances deserve a bit of fame! The new leaderboards are super empty so now's a great time to get your name on top :D

All pre-existing high scores remain and are viewable on the "quartet" page for each difficulty. Also, the inner workings driving leaderboard score submission and retrieval have been retooled considerably for better performance. Flipping through pages of the leaderboards should no longer cause game crashes nor should your scores ever be lost at the end of Endless runs by freak Steam connection drops.

Adjustable party size in Endless mode + more advance Gigachess forward a version! :)



GIGACHESS V1.04 CHANGELOG



  • At the party builder screen of Endless mode, you can now adjust the size of your party (from 4 pieces all the way down to 1) by clicking the arrows to the left of the board
  • The Language button has been moved to the drop down menu allowing you to switch between English and French outside of the Tutorial lessons, with tooltips (accessible via right click) now available en français
  • The music that plays at the title screen is now a secret song available to listen to during gameplay, click the discoloured brick on the dungeon wall to the right of Song B's button to play the hidden title theme
  • Collision bugs occurring when a stack of Viper Pawns could get their order scrambled if stopped by a hero piece or Blockade on the 1st row fixed
  • A bug where using undo immediately after loading a quicksave could wipe Bishops from the board fixed
  • A bug where using undo in the same turn as a Pawnwarp could turn warped Pawns into Viper Pawns fixed
  • The turn advance button at the bottom of the board has been restyled slightly, making it a solid horizontal bar two tiles wide
  • Resetting your line-up at the party builder screen of Endless mode now causes the tiles at the bottom two rows of the board to flash

Added later via quiet patch:

  • Occasional audio hiccups at game launch fixed
  • Leaderboard stability improved, game crashes associated with leaderboard scores being downloaded fixed
  • Leaderboard score submission improved, scores being lost due to split second connection drops resolved
  • The navigation arrows for scrolling up and down leaderboard pages now turn visibly inactive when the top or bottom of the list is reached
  • A bug allowing you to waste 5 SP refreshing a hero piece's Queen-up when their Queen-up is already full fixed

The adjustable party handicap new to Endless mode should make playing on lower difficulties strategically enjoyable for even seasoned players, as Easy or Medium are considerably more challenging with a reduced party to command. Expert and Master difficulties are similarly much harder by shrinking party size, give it a try and please do share your thoughts!

  • The Shieldguard has been introduced to Endless mode where using a hero piece to capture the last Pawn threatening another hero piece earns you a special point, earn 3 and any Viper Pawns on the board downgrade instantly to regular Pawns
  • The Endless mode Pawnwarps introduced in v1.02 have been dialed back to only trigger every 10 waves, 5 was crazy imbalanced when playing on Master difficulty with warps happening much too quickly to pose a proper challenge
  • Refreshing a previously placed Blockade or a hero piece's Queen-up now enables the 'Undo' button even if no other moves have been made in a turn
  • All audio assets have been converted from WAV to OGG which has dramatically shrunk the size of the Gigachess executable (~%60 smaller!)
  • A bug where using 'Undo' in the 1st turn of a restarted Endless game could force Pawns to their previous endgame positions fixed

Added later via quiet patch:

  • A bug where Blockades could become unbreakable when attacked simultaneously by two stacked Pawns fixed
  • A bug when saving / loading an Endless game could mess up the number of Blockades able to be placed fixed
  • A click-and-drag movement bug where quickly switching between hero pieces could get the last selected piece stuck on the board fixed
  • Par for Stage 24 of Puzzle Attack mode adjusted from 5 to 6
  • Hints have been updated for Stage 45 & 48 of Puzzle Attack mode

Protecting your hero pieces deserves a reward and the Shieldguard-triggered Viper Pawn downgrade is a fun new incentive for observant, optimized defense. Between Shieldguards and Pawnwarps, Endless mode now features a good bit more flavour and depth! The tutorial really ought to include a dedicated lesson to introduce the Shieldguard, that'll be coming in a near future update.

  • At the start of every 5th wave in Endless mode, any Pawns who've moved onto the bottom two rows of the board get teleported away to the top two rows
  • Hero pieces being captured now cause the water surrounding the board to flash brightly of that hero piece's colour to make it clearer that a piece has been lost
  • Viper Pawn spawn rates in Endless mode have been tweaked to allow the possibility of Viper Pawns appearing on Novice and Medium difficulties in limited numbers
  • A special board transition effect now plays when a game is restarted or undo is used
  • Blockades now show visible cracks as their stock is depleted
  • The 'Last Formation' button in Endless mode now loads up the last difficulty setting played
  • Blockades and Trapmines now feature a spawn animation when placed on the board
  • Hints added to all of the Tutorial stages, unlocked just like in Puzzle Attack mode after 3 successive defeats in a stage
  • The 'Undo' button in Endless mode now enables when a power-up is purchased in a turn, even if no hero pieces have been moved
  • Layering bugs where hint overlays would appear on top of the Victory and Defeat shields fixed
  • The keyboard shortcut for changing window size has been removed due to unresolvable bugs that could glitch out display settings when the dropdown menu was next accessed
  • Annoying audio clipping pops when using click-and-drag movement fixed
  • Blockade rubble now gets cleared from the board between Puzzle Attack stages
  • A bug that could prevent Trapmines from being placed in certain situations of using Undo fixed
  • A bug where spamming the 'Last Formation' button could get hero pieces stuck in their spawn animation fixed
  • A bug allowing Rooks and Bishops to be resurrected inside Blockades and on top of Trapmines fixed

Added later via quiet patch:

  • Viper Pawns can now only ever downgrade to regular Pawns on the bottom two rows of the board, previously they would inherit downgrades from any object blocking their advance on the 2nd row

The 5-wave Pawnwarp changes up the flow of Endless mode in kind of a cool way, do share your thoughts if you feel one way or the other about it :)

  • A hint for each of the 48 Puzzle Attack stages can now be accessed after 3 defeats, projecting an overlay onto the board that shows the first move towards one possible par solution
  • 'Last Formation' button added to the Endless mode party builder that calls up the last starting lineup of hero pieces played (starting now!)
  • A screen shake added to Endless mode when lives are lost
  • A special sprite effect now plays when a hero piece is resurrected
  • Screen scrolling when selecting a game mode from the main menu is a touch smoother
  • French localization for achievements added

Later via quiet patch:

  • An undo bug that would permanently disable the ability to resurrect hero pieces fixed
  • Undo may now be used on the first turn of an Endless game
  • The undo button is now disabled until a move has been made during a turn
  • A bug where campaign tooltips (hits / deaths) for hero pieces could disappear when accessing the dropdown menu fixed
  • Tooltips added for the music + hint buttons, and difficulty (skull) indicator
  • Tooltips on the Queen-up and Trapmine HUD icons not displaying properly during Puzzle Attack and Tutorial modes fixed

In testing right now is an addition to Endless mode where a special attack gets triggered every X waves (could be 10, 15, 20 waves, still fooling around with it!). It should make Endless mode a little more exciting with some thrilling close calls :)

  • Conditions for unlocking Puzzle Attack blocks have been relaxed, now taking only 5 stage clears in the current block to give access to the next 8 stages
  • A satisfying & subtle sound effect has been added when initiating click-and-drag movement of a hero piece
  • Frame rate has been tweaked and the game now runs at a solid 60 FPS
  • Puzzle Attack Stage 13's available power-up has been changed to a Queen-up
  • A graphical bug with the 'Defeat!' shield's semi-transparency fade-in fixed
  • A layering bug with the volume slider and the language button at Tutorial mode start-up fixed
  • A bug where campaign tooltips (hits / deaths) for hero pieces weren't displaying properly during Puzzle Attack mode fixed

A couple cool features to look forward to in the next update:
1) a 'hint' added to each Puzzle Attack stage that will offer a clue to the par solution
2) a 'Last Party' button added to the Endless mode party builder screen that will instantly load up your most recently played starting line-up

  • The 'Victory!' and 'Defeat!' shields now turn semi-transparent when not moused over to provide a view of the board underneath
  • Special checkerboard flash effects now play to add a little more impact to a game ending in Victory or Defeat
  • The Puzzle Attack level selector now features tooltips on locked stages communicating the conditions required to unlock them
  • The 'lock' state of the Puzzle Attack level selection buttons has been darkened
  • Clearing a Puzzle Attack stage within par now plays a special sound effect
  • The intro announcement at the start of an Endless game now rises more slowly for easier reading
  • Positions of numbers in the HUD have been tweaked slightly for more appealing alignment
  • Wave announcements now spawn further down the screen for improved visibility
  • A bug where wave announcements were appearing in Puzzle Attack and Tutorial modes fixed
