GRAVEN: LEAVING EARLY-ACCESS JANUARY 23RD, 2024

Hello everyone, my name is David Queener, Game Director on Graven. If you didn't catch it during Realms Deep, Graven’s full PC release date is January 23rd, 2024 for Steam, EGS, and GOG. Check out the new trailer below!

Historically, we’ve been vague regarding dates, hence the exact date here. The game is in the Release Candidate phase, it is playable from beginning to end, all of the content is in, and we are now optimizing, bug fixing, and tweaking the balance. This is the final stretch.

What Are the Supported Languages?

  • English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Russian
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Japanese

We won’t make any promises, but if we see in the future that there is enough interest for additional languages, we might consider it post-launch.

What About Consoles?

As you might already know, GRAVEN is also coming to consoles. We do not have a specific launch date to announce at this point, but there is a window. Certification processes vary by platform so that release date will be clearer as we get closer to it, but the game is playable on all supported platforms and there is a team dedicated to the console releases.

Gravedigger?

You might have noticed that Gravedigger Mode has been removed from the Early Access roadmap. This was a feature that we had in our initial plan, however, we had to take the hard decision to cut it from the full release. We took a long look at it and our resources and realized that to implement it at the same quality level as the rest of the game would push out the release date by a noteworthy amount. We might review this feature again at some later point.

Save File Compatibility

The release of the full version will not only bring Hub 2 and Hub 3, but also several updates and improvements to Hub 1. This means that old save files from Early Access might be corrupted and can ruin the player's experience, as the old files will not reference new content correctly. For that reason, it will be highly recommended to have a fresh start of the game.

What New Content Can I Expect?

  • 13 new weapons and tools
  • 9 new enemies
  • Unique boss fights in both additional hubs
  • Confront winter’s wrath wrought magical, extinguish a cult of fire worshipers, and rebuke a heretical summoning in Granite Watch
  • Uncover abandoned rites and sacred sites while evading devious traps and a blazing sun in Verzyphiir

We hope you enjoyed the trailer and we will be seeing you on January 23rd, 2024 with the full release of Graven for PC.

Development Blog: Beyond the Swamps of Cruxfirth

To all of you in the Orthogonal Order, a testament, if you will…

Hello! My name is Gustav Schrøder, associate producer on Graven. I would like to give you a bit of insight as to what we have been working towards over the last couple of months.

The team has been going deep - dusting off the ancient tombs of Verzyphiir, gathering firewood for the icy winds of Granite Watch, and dredging through the swamps of Cruxfirth.

Here’s a sneak peek at what we have in store for you:

Brave new foes, and aim to survive…

For Graven’s full release, we’ll be adding unique enemies to both the second and third hub. It’s going to be a tooth-and-nail fight to the death as you attempt to navigate the mists of The Snowblind Copse, take on mysterious forces in the sandswept city, and brave the dangers lurking within the puzzling world of Graven.

With all new tools of destruction, take action!

Aside from the new enemies and areas you’ll encounter, we’ve upgraded the Priest’s arsenal. If you keep an eye out on your journey, you’ll find new weapons, staff stones, and more to enhance your power.

Take the fight to those who would see your demise.

Explore, experiment. Examine your surroundings.

For both of the new hubs, we’ve been focusing on atmosphere, interactions that require use of your spells, as well as some hidden rewards here and there. Keep your wits about you, and you just might notice something extraordinary around the corner…

Familiar, and yet…

When you revisit Cruxfirth in the final release, you may notice that it’s not quite the same. We’ve cranked up the atmosphere, and made some adjustments to give you a fresh experience. About as fresh as the peat bog allows, of course.

More to come…

That concludes the sneak peek. We’ll be back with an announcement when we get closer to the release date. But for now, we return to our pilgrimage.

For there is much to be done, on the parallel path.

Connecting the World of Graven

I’m Chris Holden, Lead Level Designer on Graven. Our game's world opens up through exploration, secrets, and unique items that enhance the player's navigation. This requires a lot of unique connections for designers to create.

Graven's levels are big and level designers are given a lot of freedom to use the space. We found a little extra padding here and there was useful for transitioning, storytelling, pacing, etc. That's where our smaller connection levels came into play as many of those areas grew to become their own areas of importance and the assets created for them became some of the most widely used and important modular kits for the project.

In our first HUB, the Lice Slough connects the swampy Brine Muskeg and the quarantined Clotted Avenues under the town of Cruxfirth via four different entrances/exits. This has made the area perfect for secrets, discovery, gameplay, and returning later with new items that allow for additional exploration.

The Resonating Stone is found early in the Clotted Avenues and on top of providing combat benefits, the player can now return to previous areas and unlock new connections and secrets, such as uncovering the Peat Burner, a powerful explosive weapon which is not otherwise available.

The Ring of Passing is another example that comes later in the game, enabling movement through Cursed Barriers which have been encountered multiple times at that point, while the ring is equipped of course.

A vertical climb through a thick, hedge maze garden connects the Clotted Avenues and the Cruxfirth Archives (library). This allows us to have the Archives on a higher elevation so the clock tower is an almost always visible landmark. The hedge maze itself organically creeped into the archives. The player can then unlock a shortcut back to the town of Cruxfirth via a gated off tavern.

Being smaller, modular levels had another great effect on the project. Since they usually needed less development time to create, this helped refine the pipeline for larger areas. The unique modular pieces produced each yielded a ton of new assets for use in the larger levels speeding up their development.

Graven could possibly be considered a Metroidvania-lite, and it's taken a lot of work designing and balancing locations. Keep your eyes peeled for what new weapons and items might open things up as you play. Graven is currently available in early access which includes the entire first hub!
