Hero's Descent

Minor Patch Notes

  • Reduced the score requirements for Greed Beyond Measure from 800 to 500
  • Slightly increased the amount of time you have to make it into the dark portal

Easy Mode Enabled!

Greetings Heroes!

Today I'm switching on the most requested feature for Hero's Descent, an easy mode! You can toggle this feature at any time when selecting a game mode to play. This mode does not disable any unlocks or achievements, as I want everyone to be able to enjoy Hero's Descent at their own pace.

Easy Mode Details

  • All characters have their health and mana values doubled
  • Mana regens twice as fast upon killing enemies
  • Par times are increased by 30%
  • All characters have their attack values increased by 1 (This may sound small, but you're effectively twice as powerful in the early game!)
  • Enemies are less aggressive
  • Upgrades cost half as much in the shop

Other Patch Nodes

  • Daily Challenge is temporarily disabled in Easy Mode. I'm working on a way to get this functional here, so stay tuned
  • New leaderboards have been created for Easy Mode
  • Re-wrote callback handlers for Steam functions. Leaderboard uploads/downloads should be faster and more consistent now

Bug fixes and other improvements

Hello again, heroes!

In addition to today's achievement content patch, I've deployed some other minor fixes:

  • Speedrunners rejoice, you can now disable boss death animations in the options menu
  • The Reaper in now waits an extra 2 turns before coming active
  • Berserker par times in the first region have been increased by 15%, and an additional 20% on the boss stage. No more forced misses on Slime Queen's Revenge.
  • Fixed a bug with the Burninator achievement
  • Fixed a bug with the Terror Awaits You in the Fjord achievement
  • (Hopefully) fixed a bug resulting in a softlock when you attempt to upload a new score
  • Secondary layered sound effects (stopwatch, weather, etc) should now respect the "Mute Sfx" option

Hero's Descent achievements update!

Greetings heroes!

I've added a collection of new achievements to the game, and your clients should be automatically updating shortly. Many of these achievements are tricky to obtain, and you may want to look at the descriptions or icons for some clues. Best of luck!

With this update, the following bugs have also been fixed:

  • An invisible wall was removed from The Gardens
  • Quitting the application should work universally now

Backend and Leaderboards Update

Hi again!

Our old backend provider was somewhat unstable, so I've gone ahead and ported to using Steam entirely. You'll likely notice faster load times, and score/time uploads should be much more stable.

Unfortunately, this does mean the leaderboards will be wiped. Now's the time to conquer first place, and maybe you'll be the first to clear Reality's Edge!

Achievements and Assorted Bug Fixes

Hi everyone!

I've pushed a build today that includes a number of new Steam Achievements, and fixes the existing ones as well. If you've already earned the achievements ingame, simply boot the game up and exit, and everything should sync up.

I'll likely add some more, let me know in the forums if you have any ideas for fun ones.

Additionally, a few other gameplay and bug fix patches have been added, courtesy of Josh Jordan, the current Berserker record holder:

  • Berserkers no longer get mana potions. Any time a mana potion would drop, a health potion drops instead
  • Berserkers no longer have useless mana regen floating text popups in combat
  • The mana upgrade slot is now skipped on the upgrade screen
  • The Dervish passive for Berserker no longer kills you when you attack a door
  • Shield and Health are displayed separately in the UI
  • Health values below zero are no longer displayed

Small Patch

Some small fixes:

  • The Berserker passive "Dervish" no longer considers the player to be an active target
  • High score/fastest time uploads should be a bit more resilient, and will log more information upon failure

Hero's Descent will soon be 100% free!

To celebrate the game fully functioning on the Steam Deck, I've opted to make Hero's Descent free. There are no microtransactions or other fees involved. Simply download the game and have fun.

This pricing change should take place in about a week.

As always, you can chat with me, report bugs, or check out other projects in development in the Dan Makes Video Games Official Discord.

Early Access Patch #1

Hello Early Access folks!

Tonight I'm pushing the first (of many) Early Access update to the live build. As always, there may be bugs, so please let me know if you run into anything. The easiest way to report issues is on the Discord (https://discord.gg/pRSdCcE) or on the Community Forums.

Patch Notes

General Gameplay

  • A mysterious portal has resumed appearing
  • Fixed issues with the area and its rewards
  • A new version of the final boss may appear under certain circumstances. Good luck beating this one! (This boss may be replaced with a more unique true final boss at a later date)
  • Players brave enough to complete the game under the maximum level of difficulty will be rewarded with a special indicator on the leaderboards

Balance

  • The Berserker Trait, "Axes of Evil", now has its countdown timer increased by 1 turn when hitting an enemy. This should make the stat requirements for surviving the second area's boss less stringent

Interface

  • The tutorial text should no longer have formatting issues under certain circumstances
  • The Druid and Dragon entries in the Codex now show the proper unlocked state
  • The post-boss score screen now properly displays the PAR and NO DAMAGE bonuses

Other Bug Fixes

  • Players who die before the first boss no longer will register a score of 0 on the leaderboards
  • Killing the sub-bosses during the Fairy Queen had a small chance of causing a soft-lock, this should no longer be the case

Known Issues

  • The time leaderboards were wiped due to a DB upgrade. Given the small number of people finishing the game, this is not worth restoring. Sorry about that!

Super Big Progression Revamp Update

A major update has just been pushed to Steam for OSX and Windows, and should be available shortly. This update focuses on cleaning up the progression system, reducing the amount of time spent in menus, and reducing character stat bloat.

If you haven't tried the game in a while, this is probably a good place to jump in! As always, feedback is greatly appreciated.

Progression Changes:

  • The "Level Complete" screen has been removed entirely. Transitions between levels in the same world now happen as soon as the player reaches the exit
Monsters and treasures chests no longer directly reward experience or score
  • Upon killing the boss of a world and exiting the arena, a new "World Complete" screen will appear
  • The "World Complete" screen now gives you a grade, representing an evaluation of your overall skill in completing the levels in that world
  • Grades range from "F" to "S".
  • Your grade is determined by the number of levels in which you beat the par time, the number in which you do not take damage, and the total treasure you have discovered
  • Grades confer bonus experience and score, with the "S" rank awarding a massive boost
  • The "Level Up" screen now appears after "World Complete"
  • The amount of experience required to purchase stat upgrades has increased substantially
  • Purchasing traits continues to function as it did prior to this update
  • The Dark World continues to award progression in the same way it did before

Balance Changes:

  • Monster health has been reduced by 25-40% to account for player stats being lowered
  • The Angel heals for less and no longer shields enemies
  • The Bat's attack power has been reduced to 2
  • The Slime Queen levels up more slowly when drawing magic from Slime Royals
  • Spells gain potency or effectiveness with each individual point spent in Magic now, in order to reduce confusion

Gameplay/UI Changes:

  • Upon completing a stage, the camera will rapidly fade out, starting from the farthest area away from the player. When the next stage loads, this effect will reverse. This makes it substantially easier to tell where the player is when starting a new stage
  • The Slime Queen's Revenge and The Fairy Queen's Domain have been enabled under certain conditions
  • An animation has been added to indicate an invalid move
  • Character and enemy movement animations will appear more smooth during frame drops
  • Characters and enemies will not display negative health values while dying
  • Floating combat text will no longer render for uninteresting events
  • A new "Ambush!" text appears when certain enemies attack the player
  • Sound effects have been added to more actions
  • Some screens have had their text reduced
  • The tutorial has been updated to match the new game systems
  • The Dark World's access requirements have been made slightly easier
  • New entries have been added to the Codex
  • The Slime Queen should no longer litter
  • Storm of Greed now appears in 5% of stages
  • Storm of Darkness now appears in 5% of stages
  • Storm of Bones now appears in 5% of stages
  • All magical storms can activate in boss fights
  • Enemies under the effect of Time Stop will be revealed regardless of light during a Storm of Darkness

Unlocks:

  • Complete the game once unlocks: Wizard, Magical Storms, Additional Bosses
  • Complete the game as Wizard unlocks: A Temporal Distortion, Berserker
