Hello Cult Architects!

We hope you’re enjoying your HIJAC experience so far! We’ve just released a patch to address some issues reported by the community.

Full patch notes below…


  • Canteen Table durability increased.
  • Tier 1 - 3 Bathroom object durabilities increased.
  • Starving and sleep deprived Cultists will continue to work.


We feel the above changes will help with the reported issues of Maintenance Technicians refusing to work due to starvation resulting in death of Cultists.
We want to address Maintenance Technicians further in a full patch at the end of the month where we will make them home in on broken objects more, rather than relying on them patrolling and stumbling across broken objects.


  • Dirty hands illness chance after eating reduced from 10% to 9%.
  • Sink - Trough dirty hands removal chance increased from 40% to 45%.
  • Sink - Standard dirty hands removal chance increased from 60% to 70%.
  • Sink - Insta-Flow dirty hands removal chance increased from 90% to 95%.
  • Sink - Golden dirty hands removal chance increased from 80% to 85%.
  • Bedroom locker cost reduced from $900 to $400.
  • Leaders Sanctum initial objects cost reduced from $800 to $500.
  • Initial Darkness Divine Inspiration cost reduced from 100 influence to 40 Influence.
  • Recommended minimum room sizes increased.
  • Fixed bug in tutorial where Light Fittings could be placed resulting in the tutorial becoming blocked.
  • Food alert tracker now shows food above 40 on HUD.
  • Ruble cuble prestige increased from 2 to 3 to match other objects in its tier.
  • Divine Inspirations HUD button now shows an exclamation mark when the Leaders Sanctum is first built and Divine Inspirations are available.
  • Fixed the collision box of Holy Room Comfy Stone Pew and Shower - Bucket & String.
  • Fixed follower sidebar menu not displaying pool of revelation XP bar progress.
  • Greatly reduced the amount of Module XP required to complete a module room - Pool of Revelations, Hypno Chamber and Monolith Room.
  • Tutorial mission PR reward reduced from 50 to 20.
  • Outstanding Success mission outcome threshold increased by 8%.


We’ll also be looking to address the below issues in a future patch…


  • Rework to maintenance patrols to ensure items are fixed quicker and maintenance requires less micromanagement.
  • Updated localisation strings to improve language quality generally and to localise certain missed strings.

The Early Access launch of Honey, I Joined A Cult is now less than 24 hours away, so we've put together a handy FAQ containing key info you might need ahead of tomorrow's launch!


What is Honey, I Joined A Cult?
Honey, I Joined a Cult (or HIJAC) puts you in control of your own 1970s cult. Build and expand your base, manage your resources and make as much money out of your followers as possible!

Who are the developers?
Sole Survivor Games are a two man independent developer. Simon codes and designs and Ed codes and does the artwork. Team17 are supporting the development and helping on the publisher side.


Where are the developers based?
Simon and Ed are both based in the UK.


When is HIJAC releasing?
Honey, I Joined A Cult will be launching into Early Access on Steam on September 14th at 5PM BST / 9AM PDT / 6PM CEST / 12PM EDT


How much will the game cost?
At Early Access launch - £15.99 / $19.99 / EUR 19.99

Will there be a Mac or Linux version?
There are no solid plans for Mac and Linux versions.


What languages will be supported?
On early access launch there will be English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Turkish. Japanese is planned to be added after launch. This may be expanded in the future.

Occasionally a string of words may seem somewhat nonsensical, misaligned or not fit exactly in its designated space. This is something we're aware of, and our acolytes are working day and night to get this fixed!

If you spot an error in any of translations please report them to our support team in our Report A Problem forum!


Will there be mod support?
We’re not sure this is technically possible at present. If it’s feasible then we may add it in the future.


Have either of the devs been in a cult, is that why they made this game?
Official response: “We’ve never been able to afford it.”


Will there be controller support?
No, HIJAC will support mouse and keyboard only.


Will there be achievements?
Yes! We’ll be adding achievements in during Early Access.


Can I rename my cultists?
Yes you can!


Can I stream the game or upload gameplay to my YouTube channel?
If you’ve received a press/preview key from us, we kindly ask that you adhere to the embargo in our email.


Once the game has launched on September 14th, anyone is free to show off gameplay footage on their channel.

‘How To Do A Cult’ – HIJAC Devlog #12



If HIJAC was about, say, running a hospital, there would be lots of things that wouldn’t need explaining. Everyone knows what a doctor and a patient are, what the purpose of a hospital is and how to make money. The same can’t be said about a cult though, and therefore a decent tutorial is essential.



Although we’ve always had a short tutorial to help people through our expo plays, this was always a placeholder. We’ve now had a chance to properly plan and implement a tutorial that introduces players to the key game concepts in a fun and interactive way. People will end this relatively short process knowing exactly:

1. How to recruit new Cultists.
2. How to make money and other resources.
3. How to hold Sermons and why they’re important.
4. How to build and manage your base.

Whilst there’s numerous different ways of doing tutorials, we decided to opt for an optional short linear one where the player will be introduced to core concepts and get a small HQ up-and-running. This will be supplemented by dynamic pop-ups to introduce you to more advanced concepts as you encounter these in the game.



We’re very pleased with how this has turned out. You can now go from hapless disciple to cult overlord in one fell swoop. So if you want to know your Discombobulation Chamber from your Ministry of Alteration, we recommend you take a look at the tutorial when we enter Early Access in September!

Honey, I Joined A Cult Launches Into Early Access This September!

Mission Not Impossible - HIJAC Devlog #11

We always knew we wanted to not only allow players to manage the day-to-day running of their cult but also make decisions about how it interacted with the wider world. The missions system is the culmination of this – it allows you to choose which events to undertake and who and how they will be undertaken. They range from stealing ancient artifacts from the local museum (that can be used to decorate your base), to taking part in protests at Town Hall to advance your PR rating.

There’s a large amount of information to convey to players when they are choosing which missions to perform, as well as a number of options to decide. For example, people need to know what skills are relevant to a mission’s success, what cultists have those skills and which of those Cultists are available. This posed a number of challenges and saw us completely redesign the UI.





To enable players to quickly view all of the nefarious missions available, we’ve put them in to a scrollable list. This means you no longer have to click through the various locations to get the basic idea of what missions are available. You can still navigate the missions through the on-screen map that is still available, but the list view really helps provide the relevant details quickly.



The assignment of Cultists to a mission and the planning of any Covert Operations (which improve mission success chance) have also been streamlined. When selecting Cultists it also makes it clear what skills the mission needs to succeed and highlights them in your Cultist roster. This means you no longer send out unqualified Cultists on missions who will at best: fail the mission quietly, at worst: end up severely injured, locked up in jail, and/or creating a huge amount of heat through a catastrophic failure.
Once missions are completed, a summary is given to the player to show exactly what happened to the Cultists that undertook the mission and what rewards/consequences have ensued. New items that are received are helpfully highlighted in the build system (these could previously be hard to find, given the large amount of buildable items).
