Hi there!

The update also includes more treats and some new content, plus continued bug fixing and optimisation. For the full details, please keep an eye out for the update! :)

Thank you for your continued support of Infliction - your reviews mean the world to me!

Update 1.13 – Optimization update!

Thank you all for being so patient for this update. Update 1.13 has been mostly focused on optimization – Making improvements to areas where performance issues had been reported by the player community. This update also focuses on fixing reported bugs and implementing a few ‘quality of life’ improvements based on your feedback. Thank you so much!

Without further ado, the Infliction 1.13 update contains the following:

Optimization:

  • After waking up from the basement sequence there was a significant performance drop. The culprit was found and could be attributed to overdraw. The result is a 50% performance increase for this area of the game and several other subsequent areas
  • Areas of the game preceding the above-mentioned area have also seen a 20% performance increase due to improvements to the dynamic lighting optimization system
  • Volumetric lighting in fog has been tweaked for a small performance gain
  • Areas of the game that use heavy post processing effects have been optimized for a small performance gain
  • All lights have had an optimization pass for a small performance gain
  • Some areas have lights that cannot be switched on or off. These lights have been changed from dynamic to stationary resulting in a small performance gain

Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug causing some lights to not cast light when turned on
  • Fixed a shader that was causing overdraw and performance issues
  • Fixed a bug that caused odd collision and behaviour from cloth simulated shower curtain
  • Fixed an issue where the player could clip with wall sconce lights
  • Fixed an issue where items of interest would still flash once discovered if the player reloaded their game after discovering something and reloading the same area
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes, particularly after finding the plane tickets, the players maximum walk speed was extremely slow
  • Removed the ability to use the camera in some sequences where the player controller is disabled but the camera is not
  • Fixed an issue that caused a fresh install of the game to use invert Y as the default
  • Fixed an issue causing hiding under some beds to cause the player to get stuck
  • Fixed an issue where the player could be killed during a transition (to new areas or to a hiding spot)
  • Fixed an issue that would prevent the ability to pass through the final doors in the game
  • Fixed minor clipping issues with sliding boxes
  • Fixed a few instances where items on top of a box weren’t moving with the box when sliding
  • Fixed an issue where you could be killed twice only seconds apart causing you to witness your own death again
  • Fixed the pose of a ‘hiding’ ghost
  • Minor tweaks to text used for the subtitle system
  • Fixed an issue where lamp light reflection would show while lamp was not casting any light
  • Fixed an issue causing the ‘collect all memories’ achievement from popping. It now has a secondary check which should circumvent those whom experienced this bug. If you have finished the game and have all the memories but the achievement didn’t pop, simply continue your game and when the whiteout screen fades your achievement should pop
  • Fixed an issue where screen mode and resolution would sometimes reset themselves for the menu and loading screen
  • Fixed an issue where crouching in the elevator could cause the player to become stuck
  • Fixed an issue where the players position would be offset in the elevator
  • Fixed an issue causing subtitles to become stuck on screen
  • Fixed a few lighting inconsistencies
  • Fixed minor issues with clipping meshes

Updates and changes:

  • Moved the counselling pamphlet memory item to a new position that makes sense given the order in which they’re listed

Additions:

  • Added Vsync on/off option to video options
  • Added the ability to skip the opening cutscene
  • Added additional sound occlusion to the ghost in instances where you’re not on the same floor. If you’re not on the same floor, the ghost ambience volume is lessened by 75%
  • Added a new respawn point in ‘Crave’s lair’
  • Added subtitles to places that were intended to have subtitles but did not
  • Added new reflections to areas that lacked reflections

Other:

  • Updated some key art images on steam
  • Updated achievement text for the ‘Master chef’ achievement to better reflect how the achievement is earned (this can currently only be earned near the start of the game)

Thanks to all for being so patient with this update. I’m really happy with the optimization results and performance gains. A huge thanks and shout out to a few very active members of my community that have gone above and beyond when it comes to bug reporting and general feedback. Your input continues to make Infliction better. Thank you!

I’ll be working on a content update next. This will contain lots of additions to content as well as reported bugs and optimization fixes. I can’t wait to show off the new changes. This is going to be exciting! Thanks for joining me on this journey and the evolution of Infliction.

Thank you & Update 1.12 is live!

Hi all,

Thank you again so much for your support since Infliction has launched! Your reviews and posts in the forums mean so much to a solo developer like me. :) Please keep them coming!

I arrived home from PAX Australia couple of nights ago, and got straight in to this update. I couldn’t wait to jump in and get this patch done - it’s a big one with a lot of improvements! Thank you so much to the community for being both helpful and patient!

Update 1.12 contains the following fixes and enhancements:

  • Fixed a bug that was causing some memories to not be recognised by the memory system
  • Fixing the above bug also addressed a bug where the find every memory achievement couldn’t be triggered
  • The player can no longer hide under the bed during the baby monitor sequence causing the game to break
  • Removed the ability to pick up and examine objects during interrogation room sequence that would cause the player to become stuck
  • Fixed collision on several objects and walls that would cause the player to get stuck or pass through
  • Fixed a bug that indicated a swipe key should open a door but it does not
  • Fixed a bug that caused some candles to not work in the later part of the game
  • Flashlight no longer needs a double click to turn off at the start of a new area
  • Fixed a bug where hitting crouch and hitting the interact button at the same time would cause the player to become stuck in the inspection system
  • Fixed a bug where hitting the hide button and the interaction at the same time could cause the player to be stuck in the inspection system
  • Fixed a bug where taking a photo and crouching before the photo comes in to view causes the player to get stuck.
  • Fixed examine system so that if the item is off screen, the system will reset the object and exit examine mode. This should work for all situations
  • Added a few missing names to the credits, sorry about that
  • Removed ability for AI to spawn in an unfair location after well sequence
  • Fixed typos in achievements
  • Small incidental graphical fixes across the game (object placement and such)
  • Fixed a bug where the player could pick up a phantom version of the key in the key/camera puzzle section
  • Fixed a bug where a new player would get the continue option however clicking that option would restart the game as it’s looking for a save file that doesn’t exist. It now simply starts a new game.
  • General fixes to interaction with two objects at once
  • Minor optimisation tweaks
  • Added feature: wake-up audio recap cutscenes will only play once per area regardless of kill-count. This is reset when a new game is started. You should only see/hear each one once per playthrough
  • Adjusted: a longer delay on ghost respawn time when using the camera on the ghost

Phew, Again, thanks to the community for actively helping Infliction to improve and grow. And thank you for your patience. Being a one-man team, I tend to work a little slower than a, well… team.

The next update I’m already working on and it will contain a few more fixes as well as quality of life improvements such as skippable cutscenes, New checkpoint spawn locations, New hiding spots, More video options etc. I’ll also be doing a big optimisation pass on the next update so keep an eye out for that.

One more thing:
Upcoming updates will contain fixes to bugs, quality of life improvements, tweaks and optimisation but I also plan to start including new content in some of these updates. They’ll be free updates for everyone that owns Infliction, so keep an eye out! I’ll be keeping the new content a secret to surprise you all, and I’m excited to start working on it soon.

Thanks again, you all rock! If you’d like to support Infliction, please leave a review if you haven't done so already!

Update 1.11 and PAX Australia

Hi all,

Thanks so much for all the positivity and support. Its been overwhelming and heart-warming. All the feedback, both positive and constructive is appreciated.

I am packing my bags to head to PAX but before I leave I wanted to push out the updates I’ve made thus far. Update 1.11 contains the following:

• Invert Y axis will now invert the mouse as well as the gamepad.
• Examining an object with plain text can no longer leave text on screen if the text button and interact button are pressed at the same time
• You can no longer activate the plain text by pressing the plain text button while not holding the object.
• Removed the use of the camera when crawling through vents as it causes clipping issues
• Several minor graphical/asset tweaks (Their place and position in the world, clipping objects or hovering objects)
• Removed the use of the camera during the final ritual cutscene
• Fixed AI: can no longer become stuck upstairs in the hallway riddle area of the game
• Fixed a bug that was preventing some achievements from going ding!

Things I’m working on for the next update are as follows:
• Taking action while performing other actions can cause the player to get stuck (EG: Crouch/interact, camera/interact, Hide/interact) etc.
• General glitches
• Collision improvements
• A few typos
• Further performance optimisation
• Alter hiding mechanics to be more predictable and useful
• Skippable cut scenes on the second instance

I really appreciate your patience. Being a one-man team can be a challenge, but you all have been so amazing and patient with me, it’s much appreciated. I have some big updates planned down the road that incorporate both my own ideas as well as player feedback and I’m excited to see how it all comes together.

As for this week, I’m off to PAX. Wish me luck. If you’re at PAX Australia, please come and say hi. I’ll see you all when I get back.

Development Update - Animation Polish

Hi horror fans,

I’m hard at work putting the finishing touches on my debut title Infliction, and I’m excited to have release date news coming soon!

To celebrate, I wanted to take a behind-the-scenes look at some character animations we have been polishing and new screenshots.

Infliction is built using Unreal Engine 4, and my animator uses a 3D software package to produce creepy character movements. I’ve worked hard to add lots of atmosphere through dynamic lighting, detailed environments, haunting sound effects, and frightening interactions between the player and the ghost.

Here’s part of the animation when it’s first being worked on - placeholder textures, no lighting or environment. It’s important to get the movement right at this stage, so that it ‘works’ even without the context of the rest of the game. My animator spends a lot of time at this stage to get this feeling right.

Once I’m confident about the animation, we implement it. Now we can check it out with textures, lighting and the environment - and playtest with this animation factored in. Our playtesters have been loving this in-game - when you play Infliction, this may be one of the ways you meet your end!

Here are some other screenshot examples of scenes I have been polishing. There may be some details that others would miss, let me know if you notice anything mysterious. ;)

Thank you for your continued support.

Infliction in PAX Indie Showcase

Hey there Infliction fans,

I have some very exciting news. Infliction has been selected to be a part of the Indie showcase at PAX Australia. What is the Indie Showcase? A panel of game industry veterans select the top 6 Indie games across Australia and New Zealand and Infliction has been selected. YAY!

Infliction will be a part of the showcase at PAX Australia this year and will hopefully be enjoyed by many. I really look forward to meeting those who can attend and watching you get scared in person!

For me this win represents validation. Infliction is liked, at least by a panel of industry vets. Many have played the demo and seen the trailer but not many have played the whole game. I’m thrilled at this outcome and I’m just so excited.

Thank you for believing in me and coming along on this journey.
