IronWolf VR

Free Standalone Non-VR Version - Coming Soon

You may have noticed after a bit of a hiatus, I'm back in the IronWolf dev saddle. I hope to bring new quality of life features and possibly new content if there's still enough interest in the game.

To help revive the community and to improve peoples chances of being able to play with their friends, I'm going to release a free non-vr (desktop only) standalone edition of the game.

More info here: IronWolf Free Non-VR Edition

The Free Non-VR edition will include all of the standard missions, including the randomly generated encounters. Players of the Free standalone edition will be able to create and join games with players of the full VR version but not Open World games.

The free standalone version will not include any elements of the Open World gameplay, submarine upgrades or leaderboards.

I've got a few things I need to tidy up before this can be released, but I'll endeavour to get it out as soon as I can.

IronWolf is now out of Early Access

I’m Aaron, the developer of IronWolf. As some of you already know, IronWolf was a project of passion that was started back in 2016 by myself and Phil, my best friend since childhood. Unfortunately Phil died suddenly in late 2020 and I’ve been slowly progressing the project on my own since then.

We had completed our original Early Access goals just before Phil passed away, and I’ve been slowly adding improvements to the game ever since.

However, I’ve now got to a point where to progress this version of IronWolf further I would have no choice but to pull out and replace a lot of Phil’s original work, which I am not emotionally comfortable with ever doing. So I have made the difficult decision to officially mark the feature developments as complete and take the game out of Early Access.

I’m very proud of what IronWolf is right now and believe it to be a truly unique game in the VR space with a lot of stable content to enjoy for the cost.

I will always continue to provide maintenance/bug fix releases for IronWolf, and for now I’m going to try to enjoy working on other VR projects that have much less emotional baggage. I do hope to return to creating a VR submarine game in future to complete our extended vision with a fresh code base and a fresh team.

Networked Finger Poses for Valve Index - Early Access 1.19.0.0

For this update I've created a new hand system that allows for networked finger poses. The networking is not just using a limited set of gestures, each finger is tracked and networked efficiently so that you can better coordinate with your team mates using a wide variety of hand signals. Don't forget to use the default controller binding in the SteamVR settings for IronWolf if you're having issues with your fingers being tracked.

Hats, Songs, Improvements & Early Access Statement - 1.18.0.0

An update regarding the state and future plans for early access:

Two months before Phil passed away, we massively expanded upon our original early access goals to include multi crew destroyers and multi crew bombers in PvP and PvE.

My ability to progress the player Destroyer and multi vehicle gameplay has been frustrating and painfully slow, with very little to show for it after months of painstaking work. This was always an extremely ambitious task for just two developers to undertake and I truly believe we could have done it, but while I thought I could do it alone, I don’t think I can complete it before the heat death of the universe.

I’m sorry to say that I will be indefinitely pausing development of the Destroyer, Bomber and Multi Vehicle world, I do however hope to be able to return to those features if I’m ever in a position to assemble the team of people required to complete that vision.

I will be reverting these additional early access goals to their original multi crew submarine focus. My development focus is now entirely on improving the primary submarine gameplay features and stability as shown in this update.

All of these new features and bug fixes have come from community feedback in the Steam forums and the IronWolf VR discord channel, I'd like to thank all of you for your ongoing feedback and support as it really helps make IronWolf a better game for everyone.

Here’s what’s new in this update:

  • Added two new records: A haunting sea shanty called Sirens Song written and performed by Amimi and an Orchestral version of Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 of Tom & Jerry's The Cat Concerto fame.
  • Added a set of 8 selectable hats for player avatars located in the submarine pen. Hat choice will persist between sessions.
  • Welders no longer have infinite gas, a gas remaining gauge has been added to each welder and gas is replenished when docked in the open world.
  • Added a new vulnerable keel weak spot to destroyers which requires the player to set the torpedo depth.
  • Significantly increased the leak spawn rate penalty when the submarine hull reaches 0%
  • Increased speed of desktop control torpedo loading.
  • Fixed battery insertion breaking if you attempt to do this with an object already in your hand.
  • Fixed incorrect map bearing display on control room map.
  • Fixed desktop control sensitivity settings not persisting.
  • Fixed desktop controlled character being able to leave the submarine from the engine room and the torpedo room.
  • Fixed some spelling errors.
