Game Updated to Version 0.2.7

I have updated the default branch to the latest version. It is still a demo version of the game with limited access to game areas. Still it contains a lot of new features.

New Features:

Islands of the Caliph will be participating in NextFest this June. I hope to get some more feedback at that time and look forward to releasing the full game by August 2023. Depending on the feedback, I may decide to do an Early Access release so any vital stuff can be included in the full game.


Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.2.5

I have added a quest journal to the game. It is pretty basic. When you accept a quest, a short description will appear in the quest journal, along with the name or the individual who assigned it and their location.



Most quests are completed after you return to the quest giver, but some do not require this step.




Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.2.3

Some changes have been made to the early gameplay loop based on feedback from several players.



Here's a list of the new features...

  • Some additional NPCs in the western part of Sadaqa City which give hints about gameplay
  • I moved the light shop to the western part of Sadaqa City so you can buy torches before going to the Isle of Tarbiyyah, and you can explore the cellars under Sadaqa City sooner
  • A larger dock area on the Isle of Tarbiyyah with some shops. This should help players build up a bit before having to delve into the first real dungeon
  • Additional NPCs on the Isle of Tarbiyyah who will help players identify better ways to approach the exploration of this first challenging island


Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.2.2

Some additional bugs have been identified and fixed.

Here's a list of the new bugs reported and fixed...

  • Strafing was allowing player to go through some solid objects - I fixed the specific example provided, but this may show up in other places. I will continue to work on this to find out why it happens.
  • Fisherman model had a graphic bug
  • Wrong dialogue assigned to NPC in ruins
  • Some quest items were getting removed after player fell unconcious


Here's a list of some of the new improvements...

  • I have disabled the mouse cursor when over the screen. However this only works properly with the original screen window of 640 x 360. If you expand the window, you will notice that the mouse cursor does disappear when it is in the upper left area, but will appear when outside of this 640 x 360 area. This is an issue with the game engine, and I will do my best to find a work-around.

Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.2.1

Some additional bugs have been identified and fixed.

Here's a list of the new bugs reported and fixed...

  • Game crash sporadically when transitioning between levels


I found a simple memory leak and plugged it up. The level transitions seem to be stable now, but let me know if it happens again.


Here's a list of some of the new improvements...

  • Merchants now sell at a higher price than they will buy stuff (they have to make a profit!)
  • Campfires are now actual light sources if built in dark areas

Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.2.0

I was able to resolve almost all the bugs reported since this testing phase has begun.

Here's a list of the bugs reported...

  • On death player can still attack, view inventory etc…
  • Weapon still shown as equipped after death/respawn
  • Enemies cannot attack or move through pickup items
  • Error reloading when washed ashore
  • Weird screen resolution error where UI does not cover screen
  • Starting club (quest item) removed from inventory after washing ashore
  • Opening pause menu after losing conciousness does not allow going back…*
  • Clipping into Sultan's Guard … get stuck and have to restart
  • You can talk to people without facing them
  • Dungeon Map reset after return… ?**
  • Locked out of ship issue
  • Barrels not dropping potatoes
  • Reloading dead monster creates a super monster - unbeatable
  • Mango in wall RPG_003?
  • Passable wall in CITY_003 (upper left caves)**
  • Stalgmite wrong image when broken…
  • Add barriers to RPG_001 & RPG_002 where trees can be cut down
  • Fix trees on RPG_003


* On this one I added better explanation to the "game over" description. You can choose to load a previous save or continue and be brought back to the first island. I plan to have more detailed explanations of stuff in the game manual.

** These were reported but I was unable to reproduce them. I think they may have been caused by other issue which were already fixed by the time i got to them.

There were also a lot of feature requests. I plan to start on those tomorrow. I doubt I will be able to add everything people have suggested, but I will see what's feasible.

Game Update - Private Testing Version 0.1.8

I got a lot of good feedback from testers already, and there is more I have not had a chance to implement just yet.


  • Fixed issue where an item would still be equipped after getting deleted from inventory when character gets washed up on shore
  • Fixed issue which allowed quest items to be deleted when character gets washed up on shore
  • Fixed another error when character was washed up on shore more than once, and the game fails to load the level


A couple issues remain...

  • Strange resolution bug where UI covers only part of the screen
  • Balancing cost of antivenom
  • Some kind of super-speed bug which I will try to reproduce soon


Game Update - Version 0.1.0

With several gaming events coming up, I wanted to make sure the latest version of Islands of the Caliph (demo) was up here. The demo is still limited to the first two islands. So, although a lot of new content has been added to the game, it is not accessible quite yet. However, several new features are available in the demo including:


  1. Blocking mechanic for combat (space bar)
  2. Side-stepping (left and right arrow keys)
  3. Some bird sounds during sunrise and sunset
  4. A panel with all the control keys for quick reference
