New game on Greenlight, Equin The Lantern!

My new game just went live moments ago on Steam Greenlight!

Equin: The Lantern is my unique roguelike where you have to journey to the bottom of a 50 floor dungeon in search of a magical lantern. The lantern changes colors, and each time it does it also changes the gameplay rules in interesting (and hidden) ways.

You also have stuff like an XP hit streak bonus, champion and boss class monsters, a Dragon Quest type of battle system, some strategy where you can trap monsters behind doors or in spider webs, and hundreds of items to mess with. And everybody's favorite thing ever: PERMADEATH!

Seriously, this is about 4 years in the making it's got a ton of crap inside lol.

There's also a 10 floor demo that's available for anyone to try. It's not on Steam but through my website. If you like this you will love the full game, no question.

Thanks for supporting me and my games here, as an OLD DUDE who's been doing this forever it means a lot. I hope to see you all soon on the ETL community board next!

DXF Games update

Hello!

Sorry I haven't been as vocal on Steam as I have been lately, but I wanted to take some time today to explain what's going on with DXF Games.

For the past couple weeks I've been hard at work on updating one of my older games to be Steam compatible for an eventual Greenlight offering. The game actually takes place below the town in Just a Cleric, however it's a roguelike whose main star is an Xtoli. If you've played JAC since the expansion, that's one of those gray rabbit things underground.

The game's called Equin The Lantern, and it sports a Dragon Quest style battle system. My inspirations for this one were DQ, Diablo, and Dark Souls. The three D's! Dragon Quest in its battle system, Diablo in its randomness and things like champion monsters, and Dark Souls in that everything requires a bit of Stamina to execute. Also the lore is not immediately known to the player but is found out through bribing guild members and etc. Each weapon has its own set of actions in battle to some degree, like a sword that can slash but a weaker knife has the option to both slash and stab.

There are some cool and original things in this as well. The lantern is a mysterious object that appeared one day and your job is to set out and find out what it does. What it DOES DO is change colors through 5 different phases while you play. Depending on its color, some of the game's rules will change. This is up to the player to discover either through trial and error or more likely through those lovable, bribable, guild members.

So what's new? First off is I've remade the thing to include gamepad support. It's not necessary but it is pretty cool and I've been using it a lot these couple weeks myself when I test things. Second is there's now a save system (hooray!) which was a giant giant pain in the butt to add and took almost three days but it's done and working now. Thirdly is NEW CONTENT of course! We have some new floor events like a snow level, and things like jail gates you can open that house some pretty dangerous mofos. Mushrooms grow in the dark and can be eaten to heal you- or maybe poison you!

More as it develops, this is what I've been up to :JAC_Cow:

Balancing Act, Part 2

Steam.. The FINAL frontier
These are the voyages of the game.. JUST A CLERIC
Its ongoing mission: To strike that PERFECT BALANCE between YES! and AHHH, THIS SUCKS!
To keep doing this until the end of time if necessary..
TO BOLDLY DO WHAT MANY JAC VERSIONS FAILED TO DO BEFORE

THINGS YOU WILL PROBABLY LIKE

 • There's now a warhammer available in the badass challenge dungeon. It has a scaling critical hit chance and a 150% STR attack influence.

 • Fixed a bug where you had to wait for the wand's magic projectile to fly off the entire mission map before shooting another one (instead of just off the visible screen.) This makes for a huge improvement. Thanks Kaluroth for pointing this out!

 • Fixed a bug where if you tried an unarmed punch attack while pressing UP you couldn't attack. This also happened while climbing up ladders.

THINGS YOU WILL LIKE IF YOU LIKE A CHALLENGING EXPERIENCE

 • Added blobs to the NG+ Water Me Timbers mission.

 • Added skeleton mages to the NG+ Wicked Pissah mission.

 • Added another drake to the NG+ Dragonslayer mission (volcano range).

 • New enemy: Dire Jays. Tougher blue jays that replace the regular version in the Cardinal Rule NG+ mission. They'll also show up in the first half of the SPF3000 mission in NG+ if you spring the floating platform trap like normal.

THINGS YOU WILL PROBABLY NOT LIKE BUT HEY WHO KNOWS

 • All hidden stat icons on NG+ now have a chance to not be there at all. I really feel like having these be consistently there for each NG+ run just made the cleric too powerful and thus made the game too easy after a while and not fun anymore. Even with the recent level cap you could just get too strong in actual fact. I'm reminded of the original NES Super Mario brothers and how there were invisible 1UP mushrooms you could get by jumping in certain places BUT they were not there 100% of the time. (There's one in World 1-1 and another on a bridge in 3-1, another in 4-1 and etc). This actually helped me make this tough decision today.

THINGS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T NOTICED YET AND THAT'S GOOD

 • Just like the punch attack + UP bug above, turns out this was also happening with both of the new cursed weapons (Demon Head and Killer Fist) and for The Weebinizer flail. All have been fixed and now will attack properly even if you're pressing UP or climbing up a ladder like everything else does.

 • The sand storms in the Water Me Timbers mission in NG+ now stop while you have your subscreen or prayer book open.

 • Fixed a bug where attacking the same enemy twice in a row with the Demon Head while in the Water Me Timbers mission wouldn't count as a hit. (This is because for that mission the cleric has an extra animaton for watering the plants and it threw this off, believe it or not.)

As obviously I've invested a ton of time in this game I want to strike the right balance. :JAC_Cleric:

Gear Sets now supported!

I'm happy to say that gear sets are now part of Just a Cleric!

Wear all the pieces of any given set and you'll automatically gain some extra bonuses. With this, even crappy starting junk can be useful! Please refer to my new guide on this subject for further details:

Balancing Act

Trying to get your game to be 'just right' sometimes takes quite a while. The good thing with the Steam client if you're a dev is that you're able to quickly reach and replace your player base's copies of the game, which sadly is tough to do someplace else. Getting JAC's difficulty correct is always a concern of mine, for example. First I made a level cap of 16, but the existance of those invisible stat icons sort of made this moot. So I've tweaked this mechanic a bit now (more below).

I've been watching a lot of Just a Cleric 'Let's Plays' lately and have noticed some things that I wanted to address in the game. I've also noticed some other things that have popped up due to my 'fixing' the weapon hit boxes that needed fixing because they were TOO accurate. Let's say for example the animation of the mace went from up diagonal to down diagonal in the other direction. If there was a monster right in that spot in between you wouldn't hit it. And that's no good!

So here's a list of all the changes, some I think you will like and some we'll let history decide for itself:

THINGS YOU WILL PROBABLY LIKE

 • Mace, Club, and The Defender all got improved hitboxes (these all count as small, mace-class weapons).

 • Healing Touch got a power boost. The new formula is (Faith x 2) + random (1 to 7) points of healing. Too many times players will have to spam healing- which is understandable given this isn't an easy game- but this new tweak will not only make the healing less needed, it means the prayer gets stronger earlier.. leaving more opportunity to invest in another stat should you choose.

 • Cross Toss also got a damage boost. For a huge, spinning, magical cross that can go through walls it just didn't have quite the POP it needed. The new damage formula is (Faith) + 5. Everything else about it is unchanged.

 • Every cursed item at the hidden shop except Ryu's Mitt had its price significantly reduced. I figure all of these could be really helpful to newer players but most are outclassed by gold gear. Except Ryu's Mitt which can be mighty useful in a lot of applications without too much of a negative side.

 • The Rental Bat (remember him!?) now has more life during NG+ (10 -> 15) and will stick around longer should you decide to have him at your side.

 • The Gauntlet mission now gives you 500 XP and 2 Demon Eyeballs for a quest reward (used to be a Gold Ring and XP, which still happens at NG+).

 • Treasure chests in Grind-O-Rama got an HP decrease from 8 to 3. I figure since you start out with nothing for these challenges, who wants to beat a chest to death for 10 seconds straight, right?

THINGS YOU WILL PROBABLY NOT LIKE BUT HEY WHO KNOWS

 • Hidden Stat Icons can still be found in NG+ as long as you are level 15 or lower. You will still be able to get the Stat Point rewards during the Who's The Boss mission and rarely from black Magic Boxes. I feel this was necessary as going through NG+ again and again can quickly net you a tremendous amount of power and robs the game of a lot of the challenge. Even still, with this new change you'll be able to amass quite a little powerhouse cleric it just won't be to the levels of insanity like before.

THINGS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T NOTICED YET AND THAT'S GOOD

 • Fixed a bug where opening your prayer book up while at the very bottom of the Cult of No Personality mission obscured the prayer names when the 'BIG BOSS' HP bar was showing. Thanks to Hobidowo as I noticed this while he was fighting the Cult Leader the other day.

 • Fixed a bug where hitting the Grind-O-Rama weights in the Badass challenge sometimes wouldn't register as a hit (if you were standing too close it'd count as you being on top of the weight and it's not supposed to take damage if that's the case as a safety thing).

 • Fixed a bug where if you OHK'd the Albino Bat with Fryar Fry while he was still sleeping it'd SCREW EVERYTHING UP. Thanks to old buddy KALUROTH who came out of retirement to let me know about this!

Grind-O-Rama Party Pack

Like I hinted to in an earlier announcement, I've gone and added about 10 new Grind-O-Rama gear exclusives into the game.

This should make things more varied and fun for all.

I won't spoil anything here this time. Thanks!

Just a Cleric, Let's Plays!

These are a continuing series of videos from Sauce Bauce that I found a while ago and he does a great job with them IMO. He starts off going in blind and then learns the ins and outs along the way. And I'm happy to say that he lacks the prerequisite 'YouTube personality' trait of hyper annoying.

The first video takes a while to get going but after that he goes through the entire regular game and is currently in episode 6 of the NG+.

Be sure to check him out!

Thank you!

Thanks for the business thus far on ye olde Steamy Summer sale! This is going to go a long way towards my dream of the 20 piece chicken McNuggets I once talked about.

Selling units is all fine and dandy, but I'm more interested in what you think of Just a Cleric and the Scholar of the First Wuss expansion. Play it, tell your buds, ask questions if you got 'em because I live for this stuff.

And if you like it, why not also review it and let your fellow Steamers know what they're missing this whole time! (Not Cleveland steamers you perv!)

If we garner enough OOMPH and POP we could be featured in an even more significantly on the storefront next to Gary's Mud, Terrarium, Stardew Volleyball, Salt and Shangri-La, or Torchfight 2!!

Just a Cleric: Scholar of the First Wuss on the Summer Sale!!

Yes!

Still on the fence about buying a really fun game for a whopping $5? Why not give it a try now while it's 33% off for the Steam Summer Sale?

You get the entire core game plus the included new Grind O Rama challenge dungeons, the Super Boss, new cursed gear and the most attentive Dev in the business to boot!

Thanks friends, and I hope to see you in the JAC forums soon!
