I've been working on some fixes for Kainga (full changelog at the bottom) and I thought I'd slip in something I've been working on and very excited about as well!
The New Necromancer's Tower
Have you ever wondered why the 8th Thinker, Serrano, doesn't show up in the other towns in the belowlands?
Well that's because he normally doesn't participate in the Thinker's games, and instead focuses on necromancy and resurrecting the dead!
You may now notice the "Necromancer's Tower" map modifier and see Serrano in his tower somewhere on the map, calling the dead to him during both day and night!
I plan on continuing to add new modifiers in the future, so if you have any good ideas, post them in the comments below or on Discord!
The Unusual Village Competition Winner
At the beginning of October, we hosted an "unusual village competition" and I had a lot of good submissions from a lot of people, but by far the most unusual, and the winner, was the one below:
It was definitely unusual and the creator, OriginalFireup said it took about 5 hours, and calls it THE KAINGA SIGN CITY. OriginalFireup has made some of the most impressive cities (and yes, I intentionally called them cities instead of towns) I've seen in Kainga, so I think the reward of a Kainga Collector's Edition:
I tried making my own unusual villages during a livestream while interviewing Drummond of Somepoint Sound, the musician of Kainga, as well as answering some questions from the community on Kainga's game design choices.
Check it out:

Hello all! Just doing a minor update (I'm still working on some surprises for the future!) but I thought it could be fun to do an unusual village competition!
As you well know, Kainga is a pretty weird game, so let's celebrate that weirdness with a competition! I've spiced up this post with some past creative examples for a bit of inspiration. I'm excited to see what you come up with!
-Elevated town by CaptainArex
Competition Ground Rules:
Villages don't have to be large, efficient or successful, just unique looking!
You can use any map, any Thinker, any technology!
You can submit more than one village!
It would be nice if you named the town as well
Submit your entry sometime between now and October 31sr, 2023
In game, press "V" to remove the hud for a seamless image
Use the mouse wheel click to get a lower angle that looks really nice!
Holding CTRL will allow you to move the camera without it automatically changing its height
Take a picture of the village's most interesting part! Not the widest shot :)
-Interconnected by Quangphong
What's the Prize?
I'm excited to see what creations you come up with! The winner will get access to a copy of the Collectors Edition of Kainga, which includes an artbook and the soundtrack, as well as the glory of being the fanciest architect in the wild lands of Kainga!

Update 1.1 - "Life of Spice"
The First Major Update After Launch!
There's a lot in this update, but here are the key features: Possible variations to every map will keep each game spicy! You might see a tropical Ice Ridge, acidic water, mysterious jars or geysers dotting the land or simply an abundance of snails!
Map modifiers can affect what spawns, the weather, the resources and technologies available or the topography, sometimes dramatically changing the way you need to think about a map.
There's plenty of room for new ideas here, so if you have some ideas, please share them!
Alternative Thinkers for long-term players that will make you re-think your strategies, playstyles and favorites!
In addition to a swapped color palette, new Thinkers bring new starting crews, resources, passive technologies and bonuses. Each Thinker is focused around a key element of Kainga's world, which could be fire, war, relationships, ghosts or more.
With each Thinker comes 3 new festivals and quests to unlock them and their memory slots. Let me know your new favorite!
Doubling the number of festivals available to Kainga players was a tall order, but it had to be done to make the Thinkers feel totally unique!
Each festival has a new never-before-seen outcome and I'm excited to see the experimentation!
3 of these new festivals are new challenges! I've added one of each category, a new arena challenge that costs an exotic resource, a new landmarks challenge that asks you to make a path of archways, and a new caged Thinker challenge, except this time YOU'RE the one with the cage! Defend against the AI's attacks and protect the cage to win!
The last and in my mind, most exciting thing added to Kainga are Nomads. These hostile units will wander past any of the maps on boat, balloon or beast and may cause chaos as they clash with you or your neighbors!
This addition really makes the world of Kainga feel alive! I think you'll really enjoy seeing a town on the backs of walkers on the horizon!
I also have the full changelog, if you'd like to check out all the minor differences.
I hope you enjoy the update! As always, feel free to reach out on Discord to share your comments, ideas and screenshots! -Kainga Dev
If you're interested to see what else I've been up to, I've been working on a little side project called ShantyTown (more details to come soon!) You can follow the devlogs here:
