Lesson Learned

You too, Brutus?

Dear Students,

This time flies so fast. This is our third lesson together. Roman Empire and Ancient Greece - today we will delve into the Iron Age! Another trip is ahead of us, so sit back and try not to fall asleep yet!

There is a legend that the first founders of Rome were twins Romulus and Remus raised by a huge she-wolf. Personally, I don't believe in such stories, but Steven also sometimes acts like he was raised by wolves.

In ancient Greece, they believe in many gods who take care of various areas of life. The most important is the thunderlord Zeus. Of the two evils, I would rather meet him than the ruler of the Romans, Julius Caesar...

Go back to eating grapes

Romans are very fond of entertainment. We are a little different, because my favorite activity is sleeping and playing computer games, but they prefer to sit in thermal baths or theaters watching performances. Maybe they will let our Barbara perform with her ukulele - she would be very happy.

The main attraction of the Greeks are the Olympic Games. The players are very athletic and fast. We need to practice running to Gervase, our base, especially Mikey. Besides, it can help us if we need to escape!

It’s not a Colosseum

I heard that in Rome they organize real gladiator fights in the Colosseum! I've never seen a Roman warrior in real live, but apparently they're great at fighting. I hope that we will not have to face any of them.

As if that wasn't enough, the Greeks also have their warriors. Spartans are born soldiers! We need a good strategy! Maybe when we set the towers next to each other, it will be harder for them to get through?

I could tell you more, but Barbara keeps asking if we can study together - I don't know what she means, we've only just finished our lessons. Finally, I will just tell you that it will not be easy to survive in this era, because as you can see, many dangers await us. Get some sleep, and if you weren't in the last lesson, you can make up for it by playing demo Lesson Learned.

See you at the next lesson!

Land of the Pharaohs.

Dear Students,

Welcome to another history lesson with Franek. Today's topic: Ancient Egypt. Get out your papyrus and take notes because all the information is important! I have prepared a lot of interesting facts for you, but also tips on how to survive in this era - they will definitely be useful to you!

We call Ancient Egypt as the gift of the Nile, it is considered an extraordinary period in the history. If I had to describe this era in a few words, it would definitely be: strange buildings, gods, pharaohs and sand…a lot of sand.

The Egyptians were famous for their amazing buildings - each of you has probably seen the pyramids, even in the picture, right? They hide the tombs of great rulers and many traps. We will not build pyramids, but it would be useful to build something to defend our base - it's better that Michaś starts collecting stones.

Even Sekhmet will not help you now

Pharaoh is considered the head of Ancient Egypt. The absolute ruler, the highest of the highest, mediates between the people and the gods - almost like our Lady janitor, I would like to have such abilities too.

You must also know that the Egyptians believe in many gods, the most important of which is the sun god Re. They depict them in the form of animals or people with the head of an animal. They seem to be very scary!

I have sand everywhere

Ancient Egypt is very dangerous. When traversing the endless deserts, remember about proper hydration. I hope we will not be hit by a sandstorm or worse, THE CURSE OF TUTANKHAMON!

Amelka is not afraid at all and is very excited about our trip. She keeps saying she looks like that famous Cleopatra - I really don't understand girls.

I hope your notes are complete and not written in hieroglyphs. During our adventure, you can take commemorative photos, but watch out for traps and remember not to anger any of the gods! Now it's time for a short nap before our next adventure. If you have trouble sleeping, you can practice your slingshot shooting right now by playing the demo Lesson Learned.

Stone and stick

Dear Students,

Welcome to your first lesson with Franek. I promise it won't be another boring class about everything and nothing. You will gain the knowledge you need to start your adventure with me and my friends, so listen carefully! We have to start at the beginning of the timeline, so let's get to the prehistory!

The era of the first people, primeval times, the beginnings of history... these are just some of the terms for the longest period of human history, since the appearance of man on Earth.

Can you believe that people once lived in caves and grottoes, and instead of comfortable beds, they slept on the skins of hunted animals? Just thinking about it makes my back hurt and gives me shivers.

Nasty cave people

Cavemen, because that's what we call our ancestors, are not characterized by haughty language or high personal culture. What is certain is that you will not play chess with them. Their main occupation is gathering food and making weapons from stones and sticks.

Don't let their appearance fool you. They may seem as gentle as lambs, but when you see them coming towards you with clubs and hatchets, run as fast as you can!

They have rocks, we have brains

I think I gave you the most important information about the first era beginning our adventure and inhabitants. Traveling through forests and swamps, we can encounter many dangers. Take some provisions with you on the road and don't forget your slingshot!

May we not meet anything more dangerous than these cavemen…

This is where we will end today's lesson (relax, there will be no unannounced knowledge test).
You are ready to go with me now on the first dream journey and start unforgettable moments. Don't be afraid of anything, you listened carefully in class, right? Well, let's start the adventure in prehistory by playing the demo Lesson Learned.

History of Lesson Learned game creation

Dear colleagues,

In the beginning, there was an idea, and the idea became a game....
Or so it was. Unfortunately, I don't remember, because I didn't listen during that lesson.

I get a lot of messages from you guys asking me to tell you more about how my whole adventure came about. I decided that I won't elaborate here and will ask uncle Andy to tell you all about it.

Sit back and listen to how Lesson Learned was created.

See you on the school bench!

My own dreamy time machine.

Dear colleagues,

All our lives we have been told that time travel does not exist...what if I told you that now it may be possible! All you have to do is close your eyes, lay down comfortably, count the sheeps in your mind and...sleep!

Today I will tell you about the adventure you will experience with me and my friends. My dreamy story is divided into stylized storyboards referring to six different historical eras. Each of them has its unique biome and levels. Doesn't sound too clear? Well, let's start from the beginning.

We begin the adventure in the time of the first humans when the most popular gadget was a stick and stone, and you could only dream about high-speed Internet - awful right? Life in prehistory sucked...

The next era we will go to will be antiquity. I say right away that this will not be an all-inclusive trip to Egypt. Egyptians believed in life after death, and I believe in life... after sleep, without sleep it's hard to live, isn't it?

The next station is. The Iron Age! Or more precisely, ancient Greece, considered the cradle of Western civilization. Mythology, art, philosophy, culture, Greek salad... Well, maybe not exactly, but you'll check it out for yourself.

It was time for the Middle Ages I don't know about you, but I have always wanted to become a knight. It is known, women love a man in armor, and Amelka looks like a princess just waiting for her prince.

At this stage, we can safely be called explorers. Like Columbus, who discovered America. We will discover modernity, which hides in its history conquests, battles, and industrialization...

The last era I will introduce to you is Modernity. Its beginning was quite complicated, but it is thanks to it that we now have the Internet, fast cars, and chips!

You can get motion sickness from these trips... I tell you, history is not that boring at all. I encourage you to get acquainted with the first era by yourself right now by playing demo Lesson Learned..

Seeking of graphic style

Dear Students,

We would like to tell you about what the process of designing our game looked like, and in particular how the creation of its visual part went. We would not like to bore you, so we will briefly tell you that Lesson Learned was drawn entirely by us.

It's also not like we knew from the get-go how Frank and his friends would be drawn, or what the game would ultimately look like. At the very beginning, we had the very outline of the mechanics and what our game would be about, which is our variation in the Tower Defence genre.

If we managed to catch your attention, let us give you some variants, of the early concept art that was created at the very beginning during the design of the game:.

The first issue was to choose the right style and character construction. We had to consider which style would be best and allow us to cut our characters from the background. We decided on a light character outline, which highlights the character subtly and does not knock out the immersion.

Next, we could use some accessories and a more human appearance for our characters. We wanted them not to be heavily comic or exaggerated, and to resemble the students in their appearance.

Like the disciples it and the South Park style we had to check it out, but in our opinion, it was too simple. In addition, it also lacked a bit of atmosphere, which we wanted.

As fans of memes, we had to test a variant with well-known funny faces that everyone associates with. In this case, however, we didn't want to have too caricatured characters.

This concept relied on an outline and a strong cutaway from the background, but the characters themselves were a bit too simple. In addition, with gameplay, they may not have been fully legible to players.

Finally, the last concept, seems to us both the clearest and the most fitting for the gameplay. In it, we were mainly inspired by the works of Tim Burton.

We got a lot of feedback from you that our game is very similar to Don't Starve. Well, you can see from this devlog that we have reworked quite a lot of different styles in order to choose just the right one for the game. Personally, we think that the game with its mechanics/visual style is quite different from this popular series. If you feel like seeing for yourself, we encourage you to play our demo!

A diary of the co-op mode

Dear Diary,

Today in history class an unheard of thing happened!
I fell asleep like I do every week and slept through the whole class, but what I dreamed made me think that I will like these lessons.

I dreamt that my benchmate and I were facing all sorts of monsters together!
We collected wood and stones and together built towers that shot at the monsters.
This cooperation made me have more fun than if I had to do it alone.

Oh, and I forgot to tell you about my recent trip!
My colleague Victor and I were at the Centrum Praskim Koneser.
There we just presented Lesson Learned in co-op mode.
It was really great! I met a lot of new colleagues, with whom I had a great time!

Poznań Game Arena 2022

Dear diary,

Recently, my class and I were taken on a school trip to Polish!
We were at Poznań Game Arena, a very large event with computer games!

It was really cool! Together with my colleagues from the bench, we showed Lesson Learned to other kids that came to Poznań! I made a lot of new friends, with whom we were looking for stones, wood, shooting slingshots and designing towers!

We even drew laurels for Uncle Andy!!! Our laurels are tower designs that we would like to put in our game. Here are our laurels:

They're great right? I hope that you enjoyed the tasks prepared by me and my colleagues, which we solved together.

See you next year!
