Pet Update Delayed

Hi everyone.

If you have played the new update, you might notice that there are quite a few problems. We sincerely apologise. We did not see them coming, as there were a bunch of super weird issues that didn't appear during our testing. We will not be able to resolve these issues in the short term, so we have made the difficult decision to delay the update by a week in hopes of getting things stable enough for everyone.

Since we updated the engine from 4 to 5, we are forced to load yesterday's backups as saves are not backwards compatible. We know this is incredibly frustrating, and we're truly sorry for the lost progress. The good thing is that you can still earn and open pet tackle boxes, and you'll be able to equip them in the update when it becomes available.

In the next few hours after this post, I will be reverting the update and closing servers to load the backups. Servers will come online one by one when maintenance is completed.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this frustrating situation. We're deeply sorry for the inconvenience and the disruption to your gameplay. We'll work around the clock to make sure the next release is much smoother.

Pet cosmetics

We're introducing a new tackle box with unlockable pets that can accompany you on your journey in Longvinter Island! Dogs, cats, and small birds will follow you around and have a bunch of cute animations to entertain you while chilling at the campfire. Be sure not to miss out since these special pet tackle boxes are dropping for only 1 month. Tackle boxes drop every 2 days, so while playing the game actively, you can grow your pet collection by a substantial amount!

Engine Upgraded to UE5

Speaking of our ability to move forward, we have now migrated the engine to UE5 to keep up with dependencies that we need to continue developing the game. Re-enabling anti-cheat would not have been feasible without this time-consuming migration. For those who are also developers, don't worry – we have disabled all the new rendering technologies that usually drag UE5 performance down, so you should expect similar performance with the game after updating.

Anti-Cheat Re-enabled


We have now been able to re-enable Easy Anti Cheat since we updated our engine to a newer version. For me, it's baffling to think that an engine version that was only 3 years old is no longer supported by plugin developers, but the big work is now done and we hope this will reduce the number of hackers in the game by at least some amount by having an anti-cheat solution.

Modding Support



Unfortunately, we did not manage to get modding support back working in time for this update, but we continue working on getting modding support back in as soon as possible. Meanwhile, you can still play 1.0 as a beta branch so you can still enjoy the modded experience!

Small Update 11

Quick Update on State of the Game

Hey all, This small update consists of;


  • Fixed not being able to properly place items in 2 floor houses
  • Fixed special items not showing correct mesh (suspicious mushroom, plasma rifle, etc.)
  • Fixed z-fighting on the koilot harbor meshes
  • Added invisible walls around the underground arena to stop players from jumping into the void


As we await upcoming bug fixes and updates, I'd like to propose a quarterly server wipe cycle for discussion. Under this model, the server would reset every three months—four times annually—creating a balanced gameplay rhythm throughout the year.

To clarify the server would be separate from the rest. Tagged as for example: (3MONTHLY Server).

Our community has been deliberating on the optimal wipe frequency that would maintain player engagement while still providing adequate time for meaningful progression. A three-month cycle potentially offers the best of both worlds: enough time to establish bases, and form alliances, without the stagnation that can occur with longer periods.

What are your thoughts on this quarterly approach? Would this timeline strike the right balance between refreshing gameplay and allowing for substantial accomplishment?

Devlog #54

April Recap and New Plans for Moving Forward



Hi everyone! Hopefully you are having a great spring! I'm going straight to the point about what today's devlog is all about. We want to keep you updated on what is happening behind the scenes and what will be happening next.

Cheaters



We are very aware of and share your frustration with cheaters, and we want to solve this issue as well. We have decided to add an anti-cheat solution back into the game, but before we can do that, we need to upgrade our engine version. This is not a small task but a necessary one to bring Longvinter forward and make it last for another 4 years. This upgrade will also enable us to add DLSS and the newest FSR upscalers to our game so we can have better image quality for low-end systems. We will be implementing this shift in update 1.1.

Update 1.1



We have now confirmed that the next update will feature pets you can have while traveling the Longvinter island. We will be sharing more about pets later, but here is a little sneak peek at what our artists have been working on!



Leveling System for Items



We have also been planning to add a completely new feature to the game in the form of item levels! Levels would affect items' values, and the higher the level, the better the item would be. For example, a level 1 Assault Rifle does only 3 damage, a level 5 Assault Rifle does 4 damage, and a level 10 does 5 damage. We are still working out the details and specifics of this system, but we want to hear your thoughts about it!

Small Update 10

Quick Update on State of the Game

We are currently working on implementing Easy Anti-Cheat back into the game and making it compatible with Steam Deck. The original reason for disabling EAC was to allow Steam Deck users to play the game during launch, but this has had the side effect of increasing the number of hackers, which is not ideal. We hope to have a working anti-cheat system with Steam Deck support again by next week!

This small update consists of;


  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to build in the void with rugs
  • Fixed a bug where placeables sometimes could not be placed on the ground
  • Hat/face effects can no longer be applied to hairs by editing the save file
  • Disabled physics collisions on throwable projectiles
  • Fixed a bug where throwables would fall through boats
  • Vintershop should now show correct amount of currency

Small Update 6

Hello,

We have now disabled the replication graph plugin and enabled the old system where we have build our own replication on top of. Currently only plants and dropped items use this new system so we can make sure it is working well before adding more items to the new system. Crashes should be now reduced down 90% but server performance will be worse until we can add more items to use new system.

Devlog #53

Hi everyone, it's time for our Friday devlog, although this is more like a Saturday devlog now, but let's keep the name the same! In this devlog, I'll explain in depth the current situation with crashes and what we're going to do about it.

Why all the lag & Crashes?



During launch, we saw an enormous amount of players and broke our previous all-time high player count by twofold. We had experience running highly populated servers in Korea, which is why we thought our servers could handle it, but they were still slowing down too much, more than we had anticipated.

The main problem causing the servers to slow down was the way Unreal Engine handles replication (how the server decides what information to send to each player). The server CPU had to calculate the distance between every placeable and item that players had placed to all players, and figure out if they were close enough that the player needed to be sent that information. Our servers could have over 100,000 placed items, and when we had 80 players, for example, the calculations became so heavy that servers couldn't handle it effectively.

We found a couple of solutions and decided to try the "replication graph" method, which does the same thing as before but divides the map into a grid and performs calculations based on which grid the player is in. This solved the performance problem, and now all servers are running at least 10 ticks (calculations) per second. Unfortunately, the plugin that implements replicationgraph has some compatibility issues causing frequent random crashes. We managed to make it slightly better, but we're now in a situation where servers usually stay online for only about 3-4 hours.

What next?



I want to first apologize for the state the game is currently in. We acknowledge that a fully released game should not be in this condition. We will be doing a few things to resolve the issue:

1. We're trying to solve the crashes by fixing how Unreal Engine handles "bad" actors that are no longer in memory, which currently causes the crashes.

2. If we don't manage to fix it by next Wednesday, we'll revert to the old replication method and try alternative approaches until we have a stable 10-tick rate minimum and at least 12 hours of uptime on servers.

3. After this, we'll start focusing on all the bugs and issues which cause item and progression loss, as this is the most frustrating thing when playing in a persistent world where all items are hard to get.

On the bright side, our artists are working on new content updates currently planned for June and another in august with the next official server wipe. More information on these will come in next Friday's devlogs!
