Development Announcement

We, from Monoceros Beetle, are sorry for the delays on the development of Master of the Wizards. The updates are taking more time to be done than we previously thought, but that doesn't mean we've quit the project! We are preparing an update with some most requested features, such as Signature Spells and the addition of sound effects, to be launched soon.

So please, stay with us to check out those new improvements!
Thank you so much for your patience!

Land Spotlight!

“The shape of the world is a great mystery that is fiercely debated among sages, scholars, and random peasants. Some argue that it is flat like a disc, while others say it’s a sphere, and others still say it’s shaped like a doughnut. In any case, it is certain that there’s a place where the world ends, and this great and ancestral fortress is proof of this. What lies beyond it’s gates? Nobody knows. Whoever went to the other side never came back… and who did come back, uttered only gibberish.”

Sometimes it’s very risky to cast all your spells and empty your hand. You never know when you’ll need a Chain Spell to avoid a massive damage that could take you out of the competition. But it may give you an upper hand if the End of the World Gates Fortress is at play, because that is one of the ways to spread your influence to it. As the end of the world means it’s terminus, to own this card also helps with secrets to destroy other lands more easily.

At the front layer, rises the first fortress’s wall that protects the End of the World Gates. Passing it, a stairway leads to an old and unsuspecting wooden door: the gate itself! For some reason, it is slightly open, projecting an eerie pink light. At the background, over the tall stone walls, a chaotic and cosmic storm give us a clue of the kind of uncanny and mysterious events beyond our knowledge.

Land Spotlight!

“It has been said that philosophers might be the most suitable for ruling positions. Curiously, it’s usually philosophers who say that… This kingdom took that advice to heart, and not only does it have a philosopher king, it has lots of them. They spend most of their time discussing among themselves about ethics, meta-physics, and other such nonsense, thus leaving their subjects alone and leading to great prosperity in the kingdom. They are able to recognize great threats though, and will seek alliances with powerful wizards in order to protect their people.”

At a point in some matches, land devastation can be a very common and fun thing to do, so we wanted a land that would interact with other land being destroyed, and Majestic Kingdom of the Wiser Kings was born! This land gives advantage to land devastation and the concept behind it is that, seeing a powerful wizard simply annihilating lands left and right, the wise kings would “befriend” this wizard, believing that this association would free them from this spellcaster wrath.

Through the arched gates of the first layer, a small stairway full of city rulers is displayed at the second layer. Two wise kings play chess and one of them is visibly perplexed, thinking about his next play. Another king is just loafing around while an elvish queen stylishly reads a book. Two other governors debate about a thesis written on a tome and an outraged queen puzzles herself with a unknown artifact. At the background layer is possible to look at the outer walls of the city and a calm blue sky.

Land Spotlight!

"Far to the northern regions, where the howling frost winds make even the rocks crack, the rough barbarians shrug it off like it's nothing. When they are not raiding and pillaging, they like to do feats of strength to show off their incredible might, like lifting longships, anvil throwing, getting hit by horse kicks without passing out and wrestling polar bears. Those who survive all such trials are deemed the worthiest warriors of their tribe."

Virtually at every match, tons of damages are distributed around among the wizards, so we decided to give those poor souls some "advantages" when taking too much damage at once: they would draw attention of the self proclaimed manliest men around the world: the Tough Northern Barbarians. They applaud those who can endure great pain and let be influenced by a powerful wizard thar shares this common trait with them.

At the gates of the village, on the first layer, a strong warrior wrestles a polar bear, keeping it in a rear choke hold. Although this scene seems cruel, they are just old sparring partners. At the middle layer, another northern barbarian shows off his strength by proudly lifting an anvil, whilst two other guys fight each other just to prove how is the mightier. At the back layer, it begins the borders of the forest and is possible to see an ship left around, probably dragged by another warrior eager to show a feat of strength.

Tweaks

• You can now set the amount of players in a game in both single player and LAN modes.
• A dead Wizard is not required to acknowledge cast spells by pressing "Continue" anymore.

Bug Fixes

• Squashed a bug where divisions by zero could make the AIs go even more crazy.
• Eliminated a bug where a reference to something that shouldn't not exist could break the time-continuum.
• Zapped a bug where a Wizard could exploit the passage of time to get away with more Spells than they should.
• Banished a bug where summoning the mighty Kraken with less than 8 Lands in game could cause it to be way more disastrous than it's ever supposed to be.

Small Update - Patch 0.19

• Added a Tutorial Mode.

Now you can try the Tutorial for Master of the Wizards! To show you the rules and how the game works, we summoned Axl, a transmutated wizard that knows about everything in Master of the Wizards, but don't have enough power to compete for the title. This little fellow will accompany you in a small match to clarify how some Spells, Lands and Resources work.

Wizard Spotlight: The Summoner

Nyanko, The Summoner

Bounded with cute magical creatures, friendly and kind elementals and unspeakable horrors of dark dimensions, she uses all her summons to fight by her side, whether they like it or not. Don't be fooled by her apparent sweetness, for her cruelty is inversely proportional to her size.

Likes

Compelling power, cute creatures, cartoons

Dislikes

Ugly creatures, insubordination, sour candies

Nyanko is an young and powerful wizard with the affinity to summon and control all sorts of creatures from the most different places and dimensions. She loves them all equally and if they don’t love her back, she just force them to!

We wanted to add to the game an homage to JRPGs and anime, so we thought that a Magical Girl kind of character would be a very interesting and funny idea to implement. It would be a different style of character from the others so far, but that still fits very consistently on the roster.

For the theme and also to diversify from the other characters, we opted to make a small, cute and youthful character. Aside from those characteristics, we still wanted for her to be as evil as all the other ones, and we hope we could pass these feeling on the spell cards where she is featured.

We used traditional Japanese clothing as reference to design her dress and accessories. Her main color is pink to exalt her cuteness and to give a false sense of harmlessness on her character, as we described before. We think this duality works really well with the comic mood of the game.
