Developer Diary #6 - Combat

Greetings, Striver!

Last month, we introduced some of the weapons and the four melee combat styles you can experience. This month, we will show you the main types of player movements you get to use in the game and how the combat has grown through the game’s development in Morbid: The Lords of Ire.

General Combat

In Morbid: The Lords of Ire, combat is fluid like a dance - by keeping active, you can get the most out of combat and kill more enemies with ease. By timing your blocks and attacks, you are able to reserve more stamina and fare better in your battle against evil.

Basic Attacks

Swing your weapon to perform a range of combo attacks. Combos are different depending on your weapon class and wielding style.

Rage Breaker

When an enemy becomes Enraged it cannot be staggered. When you encounter a raged enemy, perform a Rage Breaker attack to break through before they regain their posture.

Riposte

When an enemy hit is about to land on you, parry the strike and perform a brutal counterattack. It is important to keep in mind that some powerful attacks cannot be parried.

Perfect Block

It is important to note that, while blocking, your stamina regenerates at a slower rate. However, perfectly timed blocks restore Stamina, impact enemy Posture, and also rebound most projectiles.

Critical Blow

Once enemy posture is gone, you can perform a Critical Blow on the staggered foe.
This deals enormous amounts of damage and is often lethal. This move also fully restores the Striver’s stamina bar. In some situations, you may choose to use the Spectre Blaser instead to deliver the Critical Blow.

Sneaking and Backstab

Sneaking allows the player to approach tougher encounters discreetly, and possibly gain the upper hand with a powerful backstab. A successful backstab takes away a lot of posture and health, and in some cases, when the posture is fully drained, it outright kills the enemy on a single hit.

Spectre Blaster

The Spectre Blaster is attuned for staggering foes, rather than dealing damage. It is a supporting tool for melee combat with which one can interrupt dangerous attacks. The Spectre Blaster holds a single slug and can be reloaded by slaying an enemy.

Dash

Dash allows you to make a quick evasive move in any direction. This move is good for dodging smaller attacks and gaining an advantage during combat as it uses less of the Striver’s stamina.

Dodge Roll

Perform a Dodge Roll to avoid larger attacks. The player is invulnerable while dodge rolling, and although you can dodge a greater distance, it will cost you more stamina.

Lunge Attack

This move is earned separately through a Blessing. You can Lunge Attack from a dodge roll, which allows for the evasive manoeuvre to be used as an offensive move.

We have come a long way since our previous release, Morbid: The Seven Acolytes, and want to thank everyone who has played the demo and given us feedback, which we are constantly reading through.

Whilst we appreciate all the souls-like fans, it’s important to note that we’re not trying to represent a souls-like game but a more fast-paced hack-and-slash action game with souls-like elements. Morbid: The Lords of Ire is continuously under development and we will keep making the combat in our game the best it can be!

And lastly, we thought we’d show you some behind-the-scenes shots of the motion captures taken by the developers at the Still Running studio. Almost every animation you see in-game is created in real life using motion capture (and yes, that is the CEO of Still Running stumbling around)...enjoy!

One of the first motion captures we ever did for Morbid: The Lords of Ire (Cosmian Reborn enemy)

Another early motion capture session for the Tusker Champion enemy

Having fun with Battle Brute (props are important!)

Developer Diary #5 - Weapons

Greetings, Striver!

This month, we would like to show you just some of the gut-wrenching and powerful weapons that you will find in Morbid: The Lords of Ire. Which will you choose to slaughter the hideous creatures that await your path?

Sword of Dibrom

The Sword of Dibrom is a legendary sword that the Striver is allotted at the beginning of her gruesome journey. Every Striver receives the sword when they first begin their training. It is a fine sword and has served the Striver well through many dire scenarios. Though its power has waned over the years, the blade still reminds her of the path she has hitherto fared.

“The sword still reminds you of the path you've hitherto fared. Its warm hilt has guided you through the cursed hamlet of Solya, the murky streets of Yortael, the putrid Felfields, and the deadly maze that was Grimwald's Grove.

By its trusty blade, many a mighty foe has fallen, the mindless Boatswain Borga, the legless witch Yaga Moer, the formidable Undead Mammoth-Beast, and of course, the Seven Acolytes of Mornia.”

The Sword of Dibrom is a legendary sword that the Striver is allotted at the beginning of her gruesome journey.

Mountain’s Edge

Great axes trade away speed for high damage and impact. Most designs thus endorse a barbaric style of combat where ferocity reigns and grace matters not. Those who favor the brutish way of the great axe often declare that in battle elegance is irrelevant; only the results matter. One could say they are not wrong.

Mountain’s Edge is a Two-Handed executioner's Great Axe of Rimeholdian origin, named after the mountain itself.

Fists of Ire

Knuckle dusters have historically been a popular weapon class among the martial artists of Ire. Various designs and materials have been used in making these so-called, iron fists. Though low in damage across the board, they all share one distinguishing feature; they provide the combattant with superior control over their maneuvers.

Fists of Ire are Iron fists forged in Irelia and are part of the capital's own high-quality weapon family.

Flensing Daggers

Daggers allow for a combat rhythm of unparalleled rapidity. No other weapon class can match the speed with which a combatant armed with two deadly dirks can take on an enemy. However, the swift moves are being paid for in diminished damage and impact, as small blades create small wounds and carry little inertia.

Flensing Daggers are from Dunghaven, historically used by the fishermen of yore for flensing their catch.

Developer Diary #4 - Blessings

Yuletide Blessings to you, Striver!

We hope that you have all had a festive and merry Yuletide season! As an extra little gift, we're here to bring you a sneak peak into the Blessings feature in Morbid: The Lords of Ire.

Similarly to Morbid: The Seven Acolytes, the Blessings in Morbid: The Lords of Ire allows the player to build their character by levelling up and customising the skillset of the Striver in even more varied and tangible ways.

The Blessings can be found one by one as you progress through the game and find artifacts (Tomes of Insight) which you return to Yan, the Blessed One, in the Hall of Redemption to be deciphered.
Yan also allows you to upgrade tiers and buy more slots for your Blessings using Skill Points. There are maximum of three Blessing Slots, each upgradeable up to level three.

Blessing of the Healer

*Blessing Card Concept Art

Blessing of the Healer gifts the player with a larger Health Bar.
With higher Tiers, it will improve healing effects and give the player another life.

Blessing of the Acrobat

*Blessing Card Concept Art

Blessing of the Acrobat gifts the player a larger Stamina Bar.
With higher Tiers it regenerates Stamina faster and removes Stamina downtime.

Blessing of the Gunslinger

*Blessing Card Concept Art

Blessing of the Gunslinger gifts the player with shots that have more impact.
With higher Tiers the player obtains Piercing Bullets and doubles the Ammo cap.

These 3 Blessings are just some of what you will get to experience in Morbid: The Lords of Ire, and there will be many more unique and useful Blessings to come in the full game!

Developer Diary #3 - Environments

Greetings, Striver!

The land of Ire has been divided into five realms, governed by the five factions and led by the five Acolyte leaders - 'The Lords of Ire'.

In Morbid: The Lords of Ire, you must battle your way through these realms, facing horrid monstrosities, special encounters and quests. Ultimately, one by one, it is your goal to defeat the five Acolyte lords.

Get a taste of the stricken land of Ire by checking out just some of the environments you will battle across, in hopes of freeing from the evil grip of the Gahars, below...

RIMEHOLD

"For ages, the stoic warriors of Rimehold were the noble watchmen of the Wintry Mountains. With pride and vigilance, they guarded the mountain passage between Mornia and Ire."

Often referred to as 'The Wintry Mountains', this snowbound realm is one of the first gruesome lands that you will visit in this action-adventure.

Tread through deep snowy passes and explore frozen stone strongholds in Rimehold, home to the forever-doomed living and dead accursed warriors.

IRELIA

"As the onslaught continued, most Irelians fled the city, but some refused to flee. Those who stayed split into two factions: Some tried to defend the city against the insect invaders, while others chose not to fight but to worship the monstrosities as their new overlords."

The monumental capital of Ire, Irelia fell into ruin when a colony of parasitic insect demons invaded the city.

Ruled by the Cult of Culex, an evil communion, Irelia features towering citadels and gothic-Victorian architecture. Away from the blood-drenched streets, players can also explore the Rejectorium - the orphanage of Irelia.

HALL OF REDEMPTION

"You made it back, Striver! What news from Rimehold? …So—it is as I feared. The great corruptors are among us once more. The Gahars have returned."

Formerly known as the Cathedral of Wrath, the Hall of Redemption is the commemorative hall where the last Striver defeated Inquisitor Odius and Redeemed Mornia in Morbid: The Seven Acolytes.

Players will be able to use the Hall of Redemption as a hub to upgrade their abilities and equipment, or seek shelter from the morbid world outside.

All in-game images are still work-in-progress, and may change before release!

Be wary, Striver, for there are more gruesome Realms that await you in Morbid: The Lords of Ire...

Developer Diary #2 - Monsters

"Had they then known what plague the Gahars had once unleashed upon the kingdom of Mornia, they could have avoided the dire mistake of granting their flesh to the malevolent gods. But alas, Ire fell under the sway of the Gahars and their new brood of dreadful Acolytes."

The five realms of Ire are full of gruesome and ghastly foes - enemies that will not let you, the Striver, pass so easily.

Players of Morbid: The Seven Acolytes will have experienced a taste of the twisted and gory demons, bred from the vastly creative minds at Still Running. However, now in a highly detailed and visceral 3D workspace, the development team have taken the disgust and dismay to a whole new level.
