Natural Locomotion is compatible with Oculus Quest 2

Oculus Quest 2 controllers have a thumb rest sensor just like the Oculus Rift CV1. Those are very useful for Natural Locomotion since it allows us to use as walking activator without doing any remap to games. However the current Oculus Link software works exactly the same as with Oculus Quest 1 and it doesn't send this information to the PC, at least not yet. For now Natural Locomotion works exactly like the Quest 1: It defaults to joystick touch but it has the "virtual thumb rest" option (which is not used by default because it was a bit too unreliable).

If a future update to Oculus Link sends this sensor we'll detect it as classic Oculus Touch controllers to be able to use this feature.

No Man's Sky profile for HTC Vive Wands and small fixes.

We've added a HTC Vive "wand" controllers profile for NMS but it requires you to configure SteamVR controller bindings explicitly, otherwise it won't work. From SteamVR settings, go to controllers, manage controller bindings, set custom, choose another, and search our binding in the community: "Natural Locomotion (Vive Wands)". Then configure the game to use head relative direction and you're good to go.

This update also fixed the buttons and sprinting issues mentioned in the previous announcement which also included a profile for Windows Mixed Reality.

Close and reopen Steam again to make sure you have the latest update.

If you experience problems with buttons or lack of sprinting, the driver may not be properly updated. IN that case follow these steps to ensure it's up to date:

  • Close SteamVR.
  • Reinstall Natural Locomotion. (alternatively you can use "verify integrity of game files")
  • Open Natural Locomotion without opening SteamVR first.
  • You only need to follow these steps once. After that you can open it in whichever order you prefer.

Updated No Man's Sky, Fixed non working buttons, Sprinting

No Man's Sky now has a head direction setting, which is used by the updated profile to provide a much more stable direction. It now has sprinting as well as a profile for Windows Mixed Reality.

You need to reset the profile and then configure the game to use "head relative" direction. If you don't do this it will walk side to side.

The update for fixing compatibility with the new SteamVR broke button pressing, which broke sprinting and other features in many games, as well as the home button in feet mode. This has been fixed.

Driver updated to avoid SteamVR to crash when the pass-through camera is enabled

Updated Natural Locomotion driver with a workaround to avoid SteamVR to crash when the pass-through camera is enabled in lighthouse headsets (HTC Vive, HTC Vive pro and Valve Index).

Although SteamVR does not stop working with this driver version, the camera may never activate while the Natural Locomotion driver is enabled in HTC Vive. The camera still working in Valve Index, but it takes a few seconds to be displayed.

We will try to fully fix this camera related issues in the next big update of Natural Locomotion. Sorry for the inconveniences.

If you experience crashes, the driver may not be properly updated. Follow these steps to ensure it's up to date:

  • Close SteamVR.
  • Reinstall Natural Locomotion. (alternatively you can use "verify integrity of game files")
  • Open Natural Locomotion without opening SteamVR first.
  • You only need to follow these steps once. After that you can open it in whichever order you prefer.

Driver updated to fix SteamVR crash, new NaLo nearing a beta release

We have released a new driver for the new SteamVR version released yesterday. It's a temporary patch since we made a workaround that might have performance problems in very old CPUs. If any of you experience low performance, the new version (in development) should fix them.

We have rewritten the driver and most parts of NaLo which allow us to release new features we couldn't before due to technical debt. Some of these features will include:

  • Overlay
  • Detect game to auto start profiles
  • Universal support for any SteamVR headset without explicit support on our side
  • Buttonless setting for hands mode (Walking gesture will only be registered e.g. when the hands are under a certain height)
  • Better performance
  • Night mode theme
  • OpenComposite support
  • iOS version of NaLo tracker
  • Gamepad emulation
  • Demo version with all features to use in games

We don't have a release date for this new version yet but we'll publish a beta version as soon as we fix some critical bugs. This beta will have the first 6 features listed above.

We have also removed the old demo since it was giving too many problems with modern headsets and one couldn't try the feet tracker mode or whether it works with your games.

Added support to HTC Vive Cosmos (experimental). Virtual Desktop is working!

We added support for the Vive Cosmos, but it is experimental since we do not have the device itself (yet).

HTC Vive cosmos will use built-in profiles made for Oculus Rift S for now. We don't know if the parameters are correct for any of the games.

Please send us feedback to the community forum or to support@myousoftware.com

Thank you, mbbc902 for helping us to make it possible. ːsteamhappyː

By the way, we have tested Natural Locomotion with a recent version of Virtual Desktop and it is fully compatible! Some other users reported that it also works with a recent version of ALVR.

Minor fixes

  • Fixed direction calibration with T-Pose in some devices combination.
  • Fixed calibration sounds that was not being played correctly after the first play.
  • Reduced UI refresh rate to 30 fps reduce CPU usage.

Half-Life: Alyx + NaLo Gameplay videos

In this video I'm using the classic NaLo arm-swing locomotion mode using the new features that we have included in our March update:
https://steamcommunity.com/games/798810/announcements/detail/1805320783871088265

Links to the time when I use or enable these features:
  • Forcing smooth rotation (0:47)
  • Enabling strafing by tilting head (1:44)
  • Enabling setting to choose locomotion direction (forwards/backwards) with the left joystick (2:21)

For this video I was using Feet Mode using 2 Nintendo Switch Joy-Con to walk-in-place. To know how to pair Nintendo Switch Joycons with Natural Locomotion see our short video-tutorial:

And finally for this video I used the new seated feet mode to play with one or two devices on the ankles while sitting on a chair with the feet hanging, sliding, on a static bike or even some treadmills. The direction is calibrated just by doing a T-pose extending the arms to the sides. It includes features like smooth rotation (if it doesn't makes you dizzy), and head tilt strafing (which also works in all other modes). Seated feet mode is not as immersive as standing, however it can be extremely useful in many situations, and it's a good compromise between immersion, convenience and exercise.

This new feature can be used with a single smartphone, which is more convenient than looking for trackers or a second device.

Fixed seated feet mode and added smooth rotation feature

New features

  • Added smooth rotation feature to be used with games that doesn't allow it, such as Half-Life: Alyx. It works even without an active profile and can be used with any VR game.
But be careful, the chaperone will rotate when using this feature. Smooth rotation is available for Index controllers and WMR only.

Smooth rotation can be enabled from Common settings > Dev tools

Fixes

  • Fixed seated mode. It was broken in some cases.
  • Fixed calibration sounds.
  • Fixed saving some settings that were not saved.
  • Fixed "sort by" that was reset when saving common settings.
  • Fixed "Half-Life: Alyx" deadzone for Index, WMR and Oculus.
  • Fixed Joycon movement detection.

Restart Steam to ensure you have the latest update.
