Now Testing - The Boguin Cannon Update

Hello Buds!

This week we’ve been working on something special! You might’ve noticed that we changed how the ‘Boguin Cannon’ works in the last update. This was the first step towards adding the newest addition to Owlboy! We hope you're ready!

Boguin Cannon Leaderboards (Now live on Public Beta)

It’s time to soar anew! For those daring, we have now added leaderboards to the Cannon area! With every successful flight, your best time will be recorded! Compete with friends or foes!

This is still in beta, and we’re testing out the map layout, fixes, and Steam’s leaderboard functionalities. The beta is subject to major changes, and might not work as intended! We’ll keep this post updated to reflect any changes we make, and please let us know if you encounter any bugs, or have any suggestions. Both love or hate is welcome!

As part of this update, we've added some features. Back in the day, I was a huge fan of the Tony Hawk series, and being able to quickly restart while I was missing tricks was a must-have feature!

We’ve taken measures to make sure that you can quickly get back to soaring if you're off-course.

  • Double tap Q or E to quickly restart the course while soaring (LB/RB on controller).
  • Click left mouse button to skip crash sequence (A button on controller).
  • Click left mouse to skip the cannon’s launch animatons for a faster start (A button on controller).
  • Camera should no longer jitter after colliding.
  • Hide HUD while soaring, to avoid cluttering the screen.
  • Blocked off a short-cut to keep the course competetive.

Following are some features that we still want to adress:

  • Re-work camera for better control.
  • Friends/Weekly/Daily leaderboards.
  • Turn leaderboards on/off in the menus for those who do not wish to record their scores.
  • Balance the cannon area’s layout.

To start competing, you can opt into our public beta right away!

To opt into the beta branch, Right Click Owlboy in your Steam Library, select Properties, select the Betas pane, and click ‘publicbeta’ from the drop-down list, and wait for the game to update in your Steam Library.

WARNING: All scores on the leaderboards might be wiped once the update is out of beta, and we are likely to work on major map or feature changes during testing.

See you on the leaderboards!!!

All the best ~ Jo, D-Pad

Version 0.0.6184.23706 - Save system update

Hello, everyone, and thank to all the players who have been reporting bugs in the Steam forum, where we can get to them.

(If you experience problems with the new version, the previous release is available in Steam through Properties -> Betas, where you can select "previous_release" from the drop-down menu. Here, you can also find our current public beta, where we will test new fixes and features.)

This is a bug fixing update that's been in development since release. For most players, you won't see much of a difference. However, it features a number of improvements:

- A save backup system. The game will now save at key points, so you can go back to any moment in the story. This will overwrite your current save, but is useful in the case that you missed something or your save has become unusable, which has happened in some rare cases. To use the new system, go to the pause menu, go to the System tab, and press "Load from earlier checkpoint".

- Aspect ratio and scaling changes. The game should now be much sharper in fullscreen at 16:9 aspect ratios, it now has pillarboxing, and letterboxing has been improved in other aspect ratios.

- The boguin cannon has been adjusted to make it more fair. Rings can now be gathered in batches, rather than all at once, making it easier to progress. For those who have already mastered the cannon, we have a surprise in store for you in an upcoming patch.

- Level loading now happens on the main thread, resulting in faster load times and better stability.

- Fixed some places in the game where players could get stuck.

- Improvements to memory usage, and miscellaneous bug fixes.

Hope you enjoy the new update, and please continue to report any bugs you may encounter!

Version 0.0.6158.30868

This new patch fixes a few problems that players have been experiencing.

- The Ancient Memories and Treasure Seeker Grand Master achievements were not working correctly. Now they do, and you do not have to create a new save to unlock the achievements if you've already collected all the necessary coins to get them.
- The game would slowly leak memory, especially if players opened the pause menu. Most players were unaffected, but some would crash after long play sessions, and a small subset of players would crash frequently. Now Owlboy's memory usage should never increase over the course of a play session, and base memory usage should be lower.
- We fixed some issues that caused players to get stuck in the Floating Continent Lava area.

More information about other issues is in the Known Issues thread on Steam.

OWLBOY IS RELEASED

After 9 years of sweat and toil the game is finally out. We're incredibly grateful for all your support, and we're thrilled that the game is finally in your hands. We hope you enjoy the game - we poured our hearts into it.

The Owlboy Soundtrack by Jonathan Geer is currently out on Bandcamp, and we'll have a bundle up on Steam as soon as possible. This post will be updated with all the information as soon as it becomes available.

EDIT: The Soundtrack is now available on Steam, both as a standalone, and as a Collector's edition bundle.

Thanks once again for all your support, and please bear with us as we try to keep up with all the feedback.

Blog Post - What's Hi-Bit pixel art?

Recently we started using 'hi-bit' when describing Owlboy's art-direction. Much of the reason is because we saw previewers were stuggeling to define Owlboy's graphics.

"It reminds me of an SNES game, but with better graphics" - is something we kept hearing.

Read more on what we believe is a new era for pixel art games.
