Bow Update has been released!

Greetings dinosaur hunters!

The first update of 2022 introduces tribal bow, berry plants and other improvements. Read on to find what’s included!

New weapon: Tribal Bow

Tribal bow is a weapon that was used by ancient hunters. It’s a stealthy weapon as you hardly cause any noise with it compared to firearms. The tribal bow has a limited range and damage compared to firearms. You’ll find the shot arrows on the ground or in your prey. As the arrows fly slower you’re able to see them during long shots.

Tribal bow uses a new ammo type: Arrow. Arrow packs can be purchased from the shop. You can also find arrow packs in loot boxes. Unlike told in the previous development blog you’re not yet able to collect back shot arrows.

Controls used with the bow are a bit different than with firearms. To draw the bow you need to hold the left mouse button. Once you want to shoot you release the left mouse button. If you want to cancel your shot you need to click the right mouse button simultaneously which releases the draw. If you keep the bow drawn too long your aim will start to waiver.

Berry plants

New plant type has been added on the island: Berry plants. They provide a way for the player to regain some lost health by eating the exotic berries. The healing effect is smaller than with a health pack but the player may find multiple berry plants in an area. Berry plants respawn berries after a while.

Dinosaur AI improvements

  • Herbivores that the player hasn't hurt will stop chasing the player after a while.
  • If a dinosaur didn’t hear where the shot originated from (more probable with a tribal bow) they will just charge in pain and might not find the player.

Shot improvements

The following changes affect trophy integrity:

  • In case you shoot a dinosaur with a gun that isn’t eligible for the proper gun bonus the integrity drop effect will be double the normal rate.
  • Inappropriate guns list has been defined for smaller dinosaurs. In case you shoot a dinosaur which has these defined you’ll see immediate integrity drop although you hit the correct organs.
  • Pteranodon integrity calculation has been unified with the rest of the species.

Bleeding effect calculation has been finetuned based on how good hits per organ you managed to do. If you just barely hit an organ you’ll inflict less bleeding. A shot that stays in an organ longer will cause more bleeding.

A new info screen has been created to the leaderboard view. You’ll find information on what are the proper guns to hunt dinosaurs for maximum score. You’ll also find out about the new inappropriate guns: Which guns are likely to destroy your trophy score. To access the info screen press the i-symbol in the lower right corner of the dinosaur picture.

Shop improvements

All weapons have new stats screens in the shop that will help you to identify the attributes of each weapon. The attributes shown are penetration, damage, fire rate, accuracy, noise and magazine size.

Updated aim animations

Aim animations for iron sight weapons were improved. Aiming down the sights is now easier as the guns shake less and hold the aim precisely when standing still. This improvement affects pistol, revolver, shotgun, .700 double barrel rifle and tranquilizer bow.

Other improvements

  • Drag & drop interchange of equipment is now possible
  • Updated multiplayer system
  • Added water bullet impact effect for all weapons
  • Bullet impact particles now scale properly and now scaling works in multiplayer
  • Added information for binoculars, tracking device and camouflage net in the shop to notify players that these items can be obtained from missions
  • Memory optimizations to reduce memory usage
  • New smaller hit sounds for Compsognathus attacks
  • Improved controller support

Development Blog #18

Greetings dinosaur hunters!

Work is ongoing toward the first update of 2022. All images are work in progress images and are subject to change.

New weapon: Hunting bow

A new weapon is being worked on: the hunting bow. When hunting with the bow you hardly cause any noise that can be detected by the dinosaurs. The bow naturally does less damage than firearms. Range is also limited compared to firearms. You will be able to retrieve the arrows you shot.

Dinosaur AI improvement: Herbivores may stop chase

We are working on an improvement to dinosaur AI where herbivores may stop chasing the player. This will be possible if the player has not been aggressive toward the dinosaur. The herbivore feels threatened when seeing the player close and might attack but would stop attacking if the player is not aggressive toward it.

Other improvements

  • Updated multiplayer system
  • Improved bush details

Bug fixes

These and other bug fixes will be included to the next update:

  • Fixed memory leak in Pathfinding System that caused memory usage to grow endlessly when going back and forth between menu and the game
  • Fixed player in some cases unable to move when starting game
  • Fixed issue that could occur after starting a solo game after playing as a client in other game
  • Fixed an issue with full storage box that might lose an item after disconnect

These were some of the features you will be seeing in the next update.

Thank you for reading and we look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Conclusion

For this article we tried a year old build of the game at version 0.81. It truly felt like a different game! Immediately we were missing auto walk, crouch toggle, fast travel and other things we had gotten used to by now. And the irritating micro stutters were back.

All in all we have to say it was an amazing year. We are already excited for this year and hope you stick with us on this journey! We are already working on the first update of 2022 and will be making many more updates this year. What would you like to see this year?

Happy New Year everyone!

Christmas Update is Here!

Greetings dinosaur hunters!

The dev team wishes you a Merry Christmas! :) As a Christmas present to you we give you the Christmas Update!

Camouflage net

Camouflage net effectively hides the player from dinosaurs when used right. It’s a new item which will be given to the player for free once completing a new mission. In case a player loses the net it can be purchased back from the shop. Players can move while utilizing a camouflage net but are not able to run. Remember that movement can be heard by nearby dinosaurs. Usage of other items isn’t possible while under the net.

Dinosaur AI improvements

When dinosaurs are wounded enough they might flee. This behavior includes almost all of the species. Smaller carnivores will also flee when hurt enough and if they’re not hungry. The bigger carnivores aren’t currently frightened by this.

Auto reload

Reload behavior can now be configured with a new dropdown setting in options. There are three available options: You can either have manual reload, auto reload once magazine is empty or auto reload once pressing the shoot key and magazine is empty. Auto reload setting can be altered both in the main menu and in-game menu. By default it will be in manual mode.

Updated rare textures

Some of the older rare textures have been updated with new ones that more clearly distinguish the rare ones from the common. Rare textures were updated for:

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Utahraptor
  • Compsognathus

Graphics settings

Now in the graphics options you’re able to select different anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion settings to be used. The default values are TAA and SSAO High. You now have the option to select FXAA, SMAA or off too for anti-aliasing. With these other settings you’ll experience less ghosting and get rid of the “x-ray vision” bug. But the drawback is that the game might look rougher. Alter these settings only if you want to try out other techniques. If you choose to use FXAA, SMAA or off for anti-aliasing change ambient occlusion settings to HBAO as they work better with this ambient occlusion.

We will keep improving these settings in the coming updates. Our aim is to get TAA rid of current issues because it’s the default technology we’re developing with.

Other improvements

  • Dinosaur gunfire scare distance was reduced on the sides and back off the player
  • Players will be able to deselect special locations from the compass using map
  • Inventory and storage box item order is now saved

Bug fixes

  • Fixed Dino target error on new host when host leaves and new host is migrated
  • The game wont no longer try to join match from invite and break current session when already in a match
  • Improved connection to server to ensure data persistence
  • Shop didn’t correctly show owned item counts from new equipment slots
  • Fixed item drop from equipment slots not immediately updating UI
  • Player knock behavior is now synced
  • Hold breath didn’t affect the weapon spread. Now holding breath correctly lessens spread.
  • No longer able to equip two items at the same time.
  • Hitboxes for some bushes and palm trees were corrected so bullets don’t stop at wrong parts of them.
  • Improved T-rex hitboxes.
  • Bullets no longer travel through big rocks
