Pride Run Menus
Hi there!
I'm here again to talk about a new PrideRun-Related topic... MAIN MENU!
First, the main screen appears and you're asked to choose where you want to go. If you choose "start" then the all-in-one screen appears: here you can chose what mode/difficulty you want to play, and based on your choice all the menu graphic changes!

After you make your choice the world map appears, where you can choose the city you want to play in.
If you chose multiplayer, you and your friends will also have to pick an avatar (this choice will not lead any impact on gameplay, but it will be purely aesthetical).
The last screen I'm going to talk about is the "parade selection screen". Here you can customize the parade you're going to control in the Play Hard match! You have some points you can spend, and every leader/group has a cost (you can't put every groups in the same parade, there's a cap).
See you next time!
Special Enemies
Hi there!
Today I'm here to talk about some obstacles you can find during play hard matches in Pride Run!
As you know, Pride Run features two game modes:
- Vanilla. A rhytm game where you have to push the right buttons during a song.
- Play Hard. A musical RTS where you have to attract people into the parade.
In this second mode you can sometime face SPECIAL ENEMIES:
They consist in special hurdles to overcome by pushing a series of buttons before it's too late: if you can push them correctly, they disappear.
Some examples of special enemies are:
- Rat
- Godzilla
- Tornado
- Storm Bull
See you next time!
Postcards from Tokyo and Paris!!!
Hi there!
I'm here again to show some graphic works of the game. Last post was about concept art, now it's the turn of... pixel art!
In particular, I'm going to show you two postcard about two beautiful cities that made it to figure in the game.
1) Metropolitan Gymnasium (Tokyo)
2) Louvre (Paris)
When you control the parade, it's easy to get distracted from monuments and beauties of the cities, but remind your purpose: S P R E A D T H E P R I D E !
Concept Art
Hi there!
Today I'm here to share some concepts made by our Art Director: Giacomo Guccinelli!
As you know Pride Run is a game drenched in colorful pixel art, but for every character made, there are different phases of production (research, concept and only then we move to pixel art).
Here you can see the concepts of some Bears that you'll be able to play with in the final game.
1) Bear Leader. Leaders are special character that are able to spawn strongest moves: for them it's easier to catch people and make them part of the parade.
2) Bear Characters. Leaders are paired with a lot of other characters that help them in their purpose: spreading the PRIDE!
See you next time,
RUN PRIDE RUN!
Layers of music!
Hi beautiful people!
I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey... but not in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Let's trip in the Pride Run music!
Play Hard is the musical RTS game mode where you have to manage groups and leaders to get the best results and reach the higher Pride as possible.
And you hear the music following the Pride level: as much the Pride bar (the rainbow in the top of the screen) becomes wider, as more the Pride is high!
And as much the Pride is high, as more the music become louder!
We don't use volume to do this, but different modular layers of music, loops of base, instruments and vocals which can be overlayed composing dinamically the music.
You can hear the different layers, adding themselves on the previous ones loop after loop.
In the game, dinamically, if the Pride is too low, you will hear the base filtered, having the same impression you have when you hear the music playing in the hall but you are in the bathroom.
Normally, we use BASE, two or three different INSTRUMENTS layers, then the higher one: Hard Ton's VOCALS!
Mauro produces the main music theme, then Marianna takes the source project and uses all instruments to produce the loopable modular music layers.
(Marianna is the first girl on the right; in the middle Daniele, scenarios pixel artist; on the left Luisa, scenario pixel artist)
We hope you will enjoy the Pride Run music while playing and supporting LGBTQ+ rights!!!
RUN PRIDE RUN!!!
Building the action on the music!
Here we are!
Let's talk about music and playing with it!
Since the first moment we thought of the game, we wanted Pride Run to be a musical game, with new game mechanics based on music, but more than all, about the pleasure of music.
We decided for two game modes: Vanilla Mode, which is the Rhythm’n game mode (more traditional design), and Play Hard, musical real time strategy game mode (more original design).
Rhythm’n games are not difficult to design. They’re simple. As it is simple when you hear music and you start to dance. We struggled on how to keep this simplicity without making the game too simple. It seems easy: the “phisycal” action of pressing buttons following the rhythm, with the needed speed without losing a beat. But, not easy, being sure that the action will be different for every scenario and every music.
We built a production pipeline like this:
1) Mauro (Hard Ton) makes the music
2) Designers (Ivan, Michele and Max) find the right mood for that music, for example “let’s use buttons as a cross on the refrain, then stop stop, relax, then superclimax with a superquick sequence”. Obviously paying attention to the game progression through the levels.
3) Designers creates the first version of the sequence in a XLS sheet
4) Simone and Kyle (tech and playtesters) implement the data structure in Unity, creating Hard difficulty level, then medium, then easy
5) …they test it with the music in all the three difficulty levels
6) They modify the data structure to have the best feeling between music and buttons actions. …back to 5)
7) They are happy!
8) All the team plays so everyone is happy too!
And, again, sorry for my rough english!
Let us introduce ourselves! The PRIDE RUN team!
Hi everybody!
Here is Ivan Venturi, founder of IV Productions and Project Director of Pride Run!
Firstly, let me apologize for my rough english!
With a superbig pleasure, let me present you the team and in the meanwhile let me tell you a bit of the story of the development till now.
START The 11th of october 2016 I had the very first idea and a very rough picture of what the game could be, and I spoke with Giacomo Guccinelli about it. He was immediately hitten and immediately he told me "YES, let's do it!". Then, thanks to the president of the LGBTQ+ cultural centre of Bologna (the city where I live and where IV Productions is), we got in touch with Hard Ton, AKA Mauro.
So, the base was there! Under a production point of view, Pride Run has three pillars. One of us for every pillar:
- tech, design, gameplay, production: Ivan
- art: Giacomo
- music: Mauro
We started prototyping. I programmed a couple of prototypes in Game Maker to see if the mechanics we imagined were good to fit with the music. We found our way!
PRE-PRODUCTION We began prototyping in Unity, while abandoning a first mechanics (a sort of initial game phase with the crowd movement through a tiled map) to enforce the other, called Street View.
Here the team in that moment (from left to right): Mauro, Davide, Max (in pixel art! Hard Ton singer), me, Giacomo, Katalin, Michele.
We produced a first playable version of the musical RTS game mode, now called PLAY HARD, and of the Dance Duel. We showed it in Lucca Comics & Games, just to understand what real players liked more or less. Moreover, we wanted to understand: how people will react to a game on the LGBTQ+ Prides?
People loved it. We were there with a lot of friends and it was something like a party! But we discovered also that the RTS gameplay, as we implemented, was not in the right direction.
So, we threw away everything and we began to code from scratch.
Me, Giacomo and Mauro funded the project by ourselves and we produced the two game modes, this time working well, and 4 scenarios, even if not complete as they are now in the game. Anyway, it was enough to go to Paris to the Game Connection looking for a publisher.
Here, we met Jonny of Green Man Gaming!
Overally, the game had a huge success with publishers, everyone was interested and even we won two prizes. But we were looking to a specific publisher. One that would be able (and having the will) to deal with the unovoidable issues from haters and toxic people in the videogame market.
Just one thing: One Man Gaming changes its logo in a rainbow version for the Pride season. And more. To cut the long story short, we understood that GMG was our perfect publisher. The needed extension of our team.
We signed!
PRODUCTION We started the production, with additional collaborators working on graphics, musics, FX, data structures etc.
Here a picture we took with David, director of Green Man Gaming Publishing, who came in Bologna (after a supergreat lunch of tortellini in brodo).
From left to right: Kyle, Davide, Michele, Luisa Maria, David, Marianna, Daniele, Giacomo, Massimo, me. Mauro is not in the picture as after lunch had to go somewhere. Moreover, we need to add Simone, Paride, Elena, Ilaria, who are not in the picture.
We can really say that we are a diverse team, under a LGBTQ+ point of view. We have all the colors of the rainbow in our team!
NOW
These pictures were taken some day ago, while the team was trying the Vanilla mode with the Dance Pad, where you push buttons with your feet. (btw: FANTASTIC!).
We are working hard to give you the best game as possible, for this autumn!
I'll keep you updated as I can, giving you a lot of info, but without doing too much spoiler about the game. We want you to be 200% surprised the first time you'll play the game!
Talk soon, and RUN PRIDE RUN!
