Protonwar - 0.21 - Grip improvements + Seated VR improvements



Hi Guys, Hope everyone is keeping well!

I figured that i would do a post here to explain some of the new features in the latest patch!

Grip Improvements:
Animations for the secondary grip hand have been updated, it now looks like you are actually gripping the weapon. (both left handed/right handed done!)
Secondary grip now also decreases weapon kickback, this differs for each weapon...
Weapon fire haptics now happen on both controllers when weapon is double gripped

Note about grip:
This is not a mil sim, the grip will never be required to aim correctly in the normal mode, you can also aim using the grip buttons on your weapon hand. This is by design.
There will be a comp mode added though, in which you will require proper grip.





Seated Mode Improvements:
Seated modes now get a new aiming system. There are 3 options selectable from the "input" menu:
"Aim from Controller, View from Head" (default)
"Aim from Controller, View from Controller" (classic)
"Aim from Head, View from head"




I have also fixed a bunch of bugs with the in game menu in seated vr, so this works a lot nicer now.


Misc Fixes:
Fixed death messages in VR
Fixed death camera on Dedicated servers
Scoreboard now shows on death in VR, along with a message about who fragged you
Fixed bugs with teleport mutator
Fixed spectator camera mouse control
Tweaks to DM-TrinityStation
Tweaks to DM-Hazardous
Tweaks to both DM-Ruins
Tweaks to both Overgrown maps


The following bits are a WIP and may change....
Tweaks to all health and armor levels, an effort to increase TTK...
Tweaks to some weapons, re: damage.
Headshots now give more damage for each weapon, All weapons currently are 1.25x damage for a headshot, And the Sniper Rifle is 2x damage for a headshot.

Protonwar - 0.20HF4 - VR Arcade Features!



Over the last week i have addressed some of the feedback from various VR arcades, and included some features in this patch to make their job a little easier.

First feature is an "offline" start up mode, which by-passes the Steam networking. This will reduce connection issues caused by an inconsistent internet connection, and lets you play local, or LAN matches un-interrupted by steam networking.
To start this mode, right click on the Protonwar menu item in Steam, and select "Launch Protonwar Offline...."



I recommend this for Arcades that are getting disconnection issues.



The "Quick Match" menu has been improved to make hosting and joining games quicker.
it now features;
A "Single Player" button, for solo bot matches
A "Multiplayer" button for LAN or Internet multiplayer games (eg; host a match)
A "Quick Join" button, which will quickly search the LAN, or Internet and join the first server it finds!

There is also a "LAN" checkbox, checked by default. This makes the server only visible on the local network.

This should help streamline the process of arcades getting into games quicker with less staff intervention.




Not related to arcades,
I have now added an experimental movement mode, which lets you tweak the walking speed of the trackpad movement by tilting the controller.
This is marked as "experimental" and is off by default.

Protonwar - 0.20HF3 - More Bug Fixes!



Hi Guys,

A small patch to fix up some bugs that we missed with the teleport only character.

This fixes the bizarre camera fade bug in multiplayer,
Team mode menu option in "Quick Match", for teleport only mode, now works correctly,
Improved the teleport tracing to fix a bug with it sometimes letting you teleport through the floor in Overgrown.

One more thing, i have changed the sniper scope to always be on, so you no longer need to hold down the grip. However the weapon will get kickback if you are not holding the grip, hold the grip to minimize this!

Hopefully the last hotfix until after GDC next week,
If anyone reading is going to GDC, see you on the Robo Recall leaderboards @ Epic!

Protonwar - 0.20HF2 - Bug Fixes, Replay Improvements,OvergrownXL...



Hi Guys,

First off,
An XL version of DM-Overgrown, made for team matches :)

Demo Recording Functionality Improved:
Auto recording feature (set from settings), this setting will auto record every match you play (disabled by default)
-Record demos of your game play, and play them back in Non-VR mode
-VR playback currently disabled as it is too buggy, Waiting on a crash fix from Epic before this is enabled. Recording from VR is fine however!
-Playback is now accessible from the menu in non vr.

Fixed scoreboard sorting
Fixed TDM scoreboard
Increased Yaw speed slightly for trackpad with yaw control scheme
Tutorial tweak
Prone animations added

Welcome to the new players, and thanks for the reviews, it means a lot to read about people enjoying the game.

Protonwar - 0.20HF1 - Horde Fixes and Bug Fixes






Hi Guys,

In this patch you can now play the horde mode in any map!
This now can be accessed via the Quick Match menu, and selecting "Horde"
There is also a new HUD widget for the horde mode, displaying the wave details directly on the HUD, and in VR "floating" in your view
The way Health regen works has also been changed. It now starts regenerating when you get below 20 health, and does so quicker, then stops until you get below 20 again. This new way works much better for shoot/cover game play
As per usual the horde mode is fully multiplayer co-op and your games will show up in the server browser.

When you spawn into the map for Horde Mode a red beacon will shoot up into the sky, one will spawn for each zone location, go here for the baddies!



These changes greatly improve the Horde mode to be much more fun. If you make it to the final wave i have some small surprises for you ;)

There will be even more changes coming soon to the Horde mode in the future,

Which leads us to...
There is now a new Player Stats link in the main menu!
The game is now recording lots of stats, and the important ones are shown here.
There is also a currency, called "Protocoin", this is calculated based on your damage given and damage taken. It is not used for anything yet, just some idea's that i am toying with for the Horde modes.
This will soon be merged into the leaderboards and run through Steam Stats...

There have also been some memory leaks which were leading to degraded performance over time, which have now been resolved.

New Locomotion System, with full climbing!!!
(includes tutorial, see notes near end of post, but these mechanics are similar to other climbing games :)

Bullet Time Mutator! (activated by pressing scope button - right grip), uses "energy", lots and lots of fun!
-not really designed for MP, great for bot matches :)


NonVR / Seated VR / Misc Notes:
Horde mode now includes bullet time, and health regen mutators
Added a ledge mantling system that lets you mantle over small ledges (non-vr / seated vr), no animations currently...
Increase boost height from wall run for Parkour mode (non-vr / seated vr)
Improved camera for Parkour (non-vr / seated vr)
Fixed bug causing stacked mutators to crash server



Focus for the next patch
The focus for the next patch will be on levels specifically designed for the new climbing mechanics,
And improving the horde mode so that it just works with any of the DM levels.



Notes for New locomotion:
Default Controls quick overview:

Finally, if there is a wall you see that looks bad ass, you can climb right up that bad boy! Why? Because you can! and it's fun!
You cannot shoot while you are climbing though, so watch your back!

Also use those mad methods with:

Bubble

*note: no more teleport in advanced mode!, with the special jumps, and climbing, it really is not needed...

Protonwar - Revised Locomotion, coming very soon!

Hey team!

I am very excited to say that the advanced locomotion systems for VR, have been completely rewritten with some pretty spectacular results, and will be coming in a patch very shortly! :-)

The two big things here, are the special jump + tricks, and the climbing system!

Default Controls quick overview:
Walking with trackpad
Jumping with trackpad

This will be broken down into 4 modes.
Trackpad
Trackpad Lefty
Trackpad with Yaw (rotation done on right hand currently, WIP, if you want it changed, let us know!)
Trackpad with Yaw Lefty

Alt movements initiated with the move/climb button, if your hand is up next to a wall, it will grab the wall to start climbing :)

I really feel that these new mechanics add greatly to the game, and cannot wait to see the mad tricks people can pull.

Massive changes to the way ammo works!
Weapons now reload, this happens automatically at the end of the clip and forces you to take your finger off the trigger, there are no animations currently, but the lights will flash and you will get the idea.
At this stage I do not plan to add weapon interaction for reloading, if anything it would just stay a quick button, clip drops out and auto replaces...
This is primarily to slow gameplay down, and make each bullet more important.
You may of noticed in the last few patches the TTK is now lower, this is all an effort to make enemies feel less like bullet sponges and to encourage more meaningful encounters.

Each weapon has clips and ammo per clip.
example:
Assault Rifle - 30 Ammo per clip, Start 3 clips, max 6 clips
- Time between shots 0.1 seconds
- Reload time 1.5 seconds


Some weapons such as the Reaper, have large clips, and you can only carry 2 max. This is a fasssssst energy weapon.

I have also set much stricter limits on the max ammo for each weapon, particularly the more powerful weapons to make them more meaningful.

These values will no doubt, require a bit of tweaking and massaging to feel right, but from the testing i feel that it improves the gameplay by adding a little bit of complexity, while still keeping it simple.



New Mutators added:
"Speed" mutator, increases the walk speed by 1.25x (any more makes you feel pretty ill in VR...)
No Ammo Pickups
No Weapon Pickups
No Health Pickups
Health Regen (50 health on spawn, Max 50 health, health regenerates, no health or armor pickups)
(no ammo and no health is quite cool combined)


Misc Stuff!:
New trace effects for the shotgun and the assault that are much more "3d" for vr...
Improved end of match notification / scoreboard in vr
Fixed jump boots mutator for vr character
AI tweaks for finding pickups
AI ammo handling tweaks
Fixed strafing animations
Fixed bug with scope's in Non VR
HUD tweaks for Non VR and moved weapon bar to bottom of screen
Fixed some demo playback bugs, i will be shortly putting this stuff into the menu (its not a high priority)


Plans for 2017 thus far:

I will keep this brief for now, as things change ;) haha!
I have been working on a new game mode that will be called 'Heroes', it will let you select a character at the start of a round, each differnt character will have a differnt load out, these will include new weapons. It will be an objective / team based game mode.
This will be also expanded and modified specifically to make it work great for VR Arcades, quick pick up and play games, so i guess this will be a smaller trimmed down dm version of heroes...

There will be new "super weapons" added
More levels
Better demo record and playback integration

Slow start to the new year but i feel that we have a really good base now for moving forward and i look forward to bringing you many more great things this year!

Just small fixes this time, mainly visual tweaks...

LOD's added for all assets, this should help performance on lower end hardware, and perhaps let people crank up the settings more :)
Lots of tweaks and performance improvements for DM-Abyss, still the worse performing map, but we will continue to improve it!
DM-Castle, slight layout change in the back room next to the YA
Most "trace" effects tweaked to be more noticeable
Added camera zoom out and a slow fade on ragdoll
Fixed a bug with some of the weapons tracking drifting when using targeting mode
Added mode selection in server browser so that you can toggle between teleport/advanced mode from the server browser




A note about getting kicked from official server. In my testing i have seen Revive cause an issue with the client. If you are getting kicked and have revive open, try closing revive! (i know, random)


Quite a decent bump to the player base over the Christmas period with new people getting VR and the Touch coming out. Feel free to stop by the forums and offer opinions / requests. I frequently read them.
