Rainy Day Racer

Hello again

Thought I'd better update this again. Still working on the new lark. Wish I could say it was the corona, but I've just been busy as a bastard this year. Not a lot of hours in the week for the old game work, but it's always on my mind. I'll have more time this year. Thank you for any continued interest.

Best wishes from my glamorous home!

Hello

Alright, all? Hope you've been well. Thought I'd better check in here, I had a post in the forum a while ago about having a new game out by the end of this year, but, yeah... it'll be a while yet. I'm making a 3D beat-em-up about a young dude who runs about getting into punch-ups. Getting there. See you soon with a bit of stuff. All the best, lots of love...

Rainy Day Racer, version 1.4

Small update here, mainly to tweak the handling - relaxed the drift assistance a bit, and set it to be interrupted when you clip the curb or hit something. Careful now! Also fixed up the web code so it'll get avatars more reliably, and some other little bits and bobs. Cheers all.

Rainy Day Racer, version 1.3

I remember when you were this high!

Here's the update. Handling's improved. Smoother, more forgiving, less realistic, you can drift a lot longer. Re-enabled the drift assistance on the reverse courses as well. Added a couple of achievements and rewards. Hit all the par times, and you'll unlock an extra bit of fun. Controls are now rebindable, and there are a couple new ones: you can hold a button to look behind you, and you can toggle the vehicle headlights. Various new intro bits, some more commentary, various new/different effects, and somewhat better performance.

And that's it! I'll stay on-station for fixing any more bugs that might arise, but expect no new features. I'm leaving this bitch to its devices.

Still tickin

Update soon.

Update 2

There's a new update up, but don't get too excited. Some leaderboard issues, that you might have read about on the forums, forced us to concentrate on some behind-the-scenes stuff, making sure the online code was all good. Please do report in if you experience any issues, it's all helpful. Aside from that, there's new options for volumes and vsync in there, and some minor visual and audio fixes.

Back next week with more. We'll get better at time managment, brothers, in this life or the next.

Update

Hiya. Sorry there's been no update this week; we're working on a big one that, barring any unforeseen bugs, should be the last one. It'll add a few achievements, one or two extra features, a final pass over the visuals, audio, and handling, and some other bits 'n' bobs. Out about the end of next week. Cheers!

Rainy Day Racer, version 1.2

Alright, troops? Rainy Day Racer v.1.2 is now live. This update features an improved audio setup, with a pleasingly cosy new muffle effect when using the in-car cam, and proper occlusion of the ambience when in tunnels. You can also now browse the entire leaderboard, rather than just your own page. Various other fixes and additions too. Back in a week or so with another pass at the handling. See you soon!

Rainy Day Racer, version 1.1

Hello! Rainy Day Racer version 1.1 is now live. Yes, just 1.1, can't afford another decimal place, not in this economy.

This isn't a huge update, and frankly will be of little interest to anyone who isn't a big nerd. Glad to see you're still reading! We've switched the game over to (almost) entirely vertex-based lighting, as befits the game's low-poly 3D. We wanted to get this in originally, but Unity makes it a huge ballache to vertex light stuff, so we canned it, but now after a bit of finagling in the new version, it's working! Still doesn't look as good as Ridge Racer Type 4, but it's a little closer. The upshot is that performance should now be significantly better, especially on weaker GPUs.

Also added a map icon for ghosts, fixed the UI scaling for non 16:9 resolutions, and made a few other minor fixes. Jump in again next week for a more substantial, less ruthlessly self-indulgent update. Thank you!

Rainy Day Racer, version 1.02

A quick update here to port the game over the latest version of Unity, which will hopefully stop the bastard force-quitting. Had multiple successful lengthy sessions with this one running on different computers, but, again, our testing capacity is limited and your results may vary. Please do report in on the forums if you're still getting quits, it's all helpful. Those affected, thank you for your patience.

Back next week with more. If it's still force-quitting I'll 4K livestream myself eating my own head. Stay tuned!

EDIT: Many thanks to those who submitted crash logs. Seems like there's some issue with how we're handling the 2D sprite elements (trees, bollards) that's causing memory problems. It might be fixed in the new version but just to safe we've uploaded another build with those disabled. We'll get a new method in for those next week, along with other fresh, radical new ways to demonstrate our incompetence. Cheers.
