Last Week Open Playtest, Feedbacks and Explosive

Welcome to this new dev blog!
The actual playtest was a great success. Don’t forget! If you want to test Reign of Dwarf, you can claim access on Steam, you can join the Discord here too, and also add the game to your wishlist on Steam here.

Last Week of Open Playtest

Last Week of Open Playtest
We launched a public playtest last week. Originally the playtest was supposed to run over the weekend of February 25th and 26th, however, we decided that it would be interesting for everyone to extend the free playtest period until March 12th. We are very happy to see you playing Reign of Dwarf and having fun farming, digging, killing your enemies, and looting as much stuff as possible.

This decision is partly motivated by the fact that the best way for us to move forward and make the game more enjoyable for players is to see you playing directly and to see together which points are to be improved. It is also an opportunity to organize events with the community and welcome more players.

During the first test sessions, we noticed several problems, especially desynchronization between the client and the server, which is detrimental to the pleasure of playing in multiplayer because the perception between players is not the same. We have noticed several ping increases, and some server crashes.

With the different data tools and logs, allowing us to analyze the data, we were able to identify that some of the problems were related to AIs and detect some memory leaks. By further investigating these solutions we were able to minimize these problems as much as possible. In addition, we took the opportunity to further optimize the game in terms of the so-called LODs (level of detail), which allow us to adjust the level of detail and thus the quality of an asset depending on the distance from which we are standing.

While working on the optimization of the game we saved several gigs of memory.

We are still very happy to see you in the game. Here is a little video from the meeting on the Reign of Dwarf between Krolay and Ouatdefok.

Character Controller

During testing, we noticed that with all the features added to the game, there were network problems and that there were many rollbacks. While investigating this we realized that these problems are related to the character controller and the synchronization of the movements. So we reworked the character controller as much as possible to fix a lot of the problems.

Workbenches

In the previous devblog, we presented you with the concepts of the future workbenches.

The Engineer’s bench allows you to make all your seating gear. This is where you can buy your catapult, your Gatling, or even a trebuchet. This is the perfect workbench if your clan is thirsty for adventure, especially for war and establishing your power on the server. As you see, this bench has three tiers.

The Leather workbench bench will allow you to work with leather to create armor, clothes, or various elements to survive in Reign of Dwarf.

The Tailor Bench allows you to make mainly clothes but can also be used to create a whip, a bed, or a container to store water. It will also be used by you and your clan to create your banner, which will then be displayed on your influence chest for example.

Feedbacks and Feeling

Our goal is to make the game as enjoyable as possible for the player and to do this we are constantly working on improving certain features and adding feedback, both visual and audio. Recently we added hitmakers as audio feedback to let a player know that he has hit his target, either on the body or in the head. More recently we added visual and audio feedback to let us know that we have just completed a craft.

Active Crafting

Active crafting is a game mechanic created specifically for team play. In Reign of Dwarf, you and your clan will have to learn a lot of recipes and certainly craft a lot of items in the blacksmith. With active crafting, if you and an ally hit the anvil at the same time the crafting time is accelerated. This mechanic is also possible with the bellow tool, and in the future, it will also be the case for all the other workbenches.

Explosive and new weapons

In the last few weeks, we have added several different weapons that you can find in chests scattered around the map, in camps and towers. First of all, we’ve added two different types of explosives: barrels and dynamite. Barrels are only capable of destroying buildings, when they explode their damage to the terrain is minimal. Dynamite is also called an excavation explosive. It is an explosive that allows you to dig into the ground and allows you to build your most beautiful bases in the heart of the mountains.

You can find several different maces, hammers, and swords among all these weapons. To unlock them in your blacksmith you must first loot them and learn the recipe. We have also added gameplay to the shield.

Procedural Map

We have added dungeons to the map that include chests containing many different loots allowing you to learn new recipes in the Blacksmith. The dungeons will be filled with goblins protecting their treasures. Around the towers, you can also find trailers, also containing loot. We create different LootTabl to define what type of loot you can find on different kinds of chests.

New Icons

We are adding a lot of in-game objects, so we need new icons. We actually added for the open playtest the furnace, and as you know now, every workbench is compatible with active crafting. Indeed, the second icon represents the bellow tool which allows you to blow in your furnace and accelerate, for example, the cooking time of your ores.

What's Cooking ?

At the moment we want to slow down the addition of new features and focus more on improving the existing ones. We want to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the player.

Well that's it for today.

Again, thanks for all the support guys, and don’t forget that the open playtest ends this Sunday, March 12. Join the discord here and be aware of all our news about Reign of Dwarf! Kickstarter available here.

Thanks all for reading, see you soon!

Open Playtest, Furnace, New UI, Workbench, and more...

Welcome to this new devblog!
As you may know, the Open Playtest is approaching and we would like to thank all the players who are helping us a lot to prepare this event. It’s always a pleasure to see players enjoying the game while we still have a long way to go.
Don’t forget that to support us you can participate in the Kickstarter here, add the game to your wishlist on Steam here and join us on Discord here! Don’t forget to share the game and the different networks around you!

Open Playtest! February 25th & 26th

In the previous Devblog, we announced an Open Playtest! As a reminder, this one will take place on the following dates:

Start: February 25th, 2023 09:00 am (GMT+1)
End: February 26th, 2023 22:00 pm (GMT+1)

This open playtest is an essential step for us, we want to introduce the game to as many players as possible and allow them to have fun and enjoy themselves throughout the weekend. We also expect several Twitch streamers to come and play during the playtest.

We count on each of you to share the existence of the open playtest around you, to your friends, your relatives, your steam contacts, discord, etc… To participate in these playtest you just need to request access directly on the Steam page.

Stress Test

To prepare for this playtest we have already set up 2 stress tests and this will continue next week with other sessions allowing us to observe different criteria.
Contrary to a classic playtest, the main objective of a stress test is to test the performance of the servers and for that we need a maximum of testers. The goal is also to receive feedback from players on the overall feel of the game, knowing that we are constantly working on those aspects of the game that make for an enjoyable experience.

We will keep you updated via Discord on the dates of the next stress test.

To participate in these stress tests you just need to request access directly on the Steam page as same as in the same way as for the playtest.

UI Design

In the previous devblog, we informed you that we were starting to rework the user interface. Currently, the UI is purely functional, it is neither thought out nor aesthetically pleasing. That’s why we took some time to think and conceptualize what we want for the future of the different UIs. In order to facilitate the creation of the UI we use the Figma software which allows us to create a tree structure, to prototype, and to integrate directly the UI inside the game engine.

In this small demo video, you can see the game menu and the navigation between the different menus. This step of creation is called zoning, it’s just a matter of conceptualizing all the interactions.

At first, you will find some scrolls on the right showing possible News and links to our different networks. By clicking on the first button on the left, we access the servers page, we can see its dates on the tab on the right. By clicking we connect to the server with a loading screen. Once in the game, here is a part of the new interface, the player’s inventory, and the primitive crafting menu.

We hope this preview will get you excited! Tell us what you think about it for now.

Furnace

Every dwarf needs a custom oven! You can finally admire the 3D model of the oven. The realization of this asset started at first with the research of different references and the conceptualization of the design. The references in the dwarf universe are numerous and it was necessary to gather all that makes the dwarf its splendor in this asset. The lava of this asset was quite complex to realize so its texture matches well with the artistic direction.

Animations

We are constantly working on the creation of new animations. This week we made for example an animation about two-handed weapons, especially the sword. So you will have the possibility to equip different weapons and we are currently working on the possibility to equip a secondary weapon with the left hand.

Concept Art

We are happy to have welcomed a concept artist to the team. This newcomer allows us to make the work of our 3D artists much easier. Here are the first concepts for assets in the game, more precisely the Engineer Workbench and the Wood Workbench with 3 different levels. This is the same logic as for the Blacksmith and will be the case for each of the workbench.

What's Cooking?

At the moment we are working hard on the success of the next playtest and for that, we are analyzing the different performances during the stress tests. The role of the testers is essential for this. We count on you all. We are also preparing for the arrival of dungeons in the game, the addition of new weapons as well as the arrival of explosives to attack the opposing bases and get a first loop of gameplay allowing raiding!

We are always very happy to read all your feedback and to discuss with you on discord and during events like the one we are going to have next week

Well, that's it for today.

Again, thanks for all the support guys, and be ready to test the game on February 25th. Join the discord here! Don’t forget you can participate on Kickstarter here and wishlist the game on Steam here!

Thanks all for reading, see you soon!

Open Playtest, VOIP, Procedural Map and more...

Welcome to this new devblog! First of all, we remind you that we launched our Kickstarter here, this is one of the ways to support us and get a definitive key to the game + access to the pre-alpha, and many other rewards.

One of the best ways to support us is also to wishlist Reign of Dwarf on Steam here. And once again, thank you all for your support! You can also join Discord if you want to chat with us!

Open Playtest ! February 25th & 26th

We are happy to announce that we are organizing an open playtest on the weekend of February 25th and 26th 2023!

Start: February 25th, 2023 09:00 am
End: February 26th, 2023 22:00 pm

The goal of this playtest is to make discover the game to a maximum of players! Several streamers will also be live on Twitch!

Don’t hesitate to share the info around you with your friends, relatives, Steam contacts, etc…

We remind you that we are in the middle of the game's development, which means that a lot of elements will evolve, however, we hope to show you the potential of Reign of Dwarf and make you want to follow its progress. Farm, Craft, Build, Fight, and more, in a dangerous universe where many animals and enemies can surprise you! Create your alliance and tax the other players!

We hope you enjoy the game; have fun!

VOIP

This week we have integrated VOIP into the game. It is simply the fact that you can talk directly with other players in the game. For now, it is a simple Push to Talk by pressing “V”. The closer the players are, the better you can hear them. We also plan to create different voice intensities by adding to the normal distance, the ability to whisper to stay or shout to intimidate your opponents.

To maximize our performance for the VOIP we decided to use a second server to manage and transfer all voice data. When a player connects to the main server, it will connect to the linked VOIP server automatically. We use a second server to prevent possible “cuts” and artifacts in the voice when the main server is doing consuming operations. In the future, we plan to add an in-game chat for players that cannot speak and we will pass chat data to this voice server too.

Swimming

Dwarves have learned how to swim!

They will no longer walk at the bottom of the ocean. But with the swimming feature come breath, staying too long underwater will consume your “breath” and when out of breath, you will start to rapidly lose HP and die. Since dwarves evolve on the island. Ocean and swimming will take a huge part in the game and we plan to develop them more in the future. All swimming animations are still a work in progress and will change in the future, but I can show you a quick peak of what looks like a dwarf that swims.

Procedural Map

This week was also marked by the setup on the development server of the procedural map! This is a completely randomly generated map, on which you can explore different biomes (Forest, Snow, and Desert), and several animals with their different versions.

The procedural generation allows ultimate replayability since at each server wipe, the map will change, entirely, counting the different points of interest of the game! It is important to note that on your private servers, you will be able to specify creation criteria for the procedural generation of your map.

Hover Loot

Some inventory updates: It is now possible to retrieve items from the inventory more easily. By pressing “H” the items you target in a chest will go directly to your inventory and vice versa. The armor you have in your inventory will go directly into the dedicated equipment area. This shortcut is a real time saver and improves the game experience.

Concept Art & Illustration

We welcome a new 2D artist, here are his first illustrations!

This is also the opportunity for us to create a brand new user interface to improve the experience of players and the readability of the game.

The importance for us to have a concept artist is paramount, it will allow us to accelerate our creative process and further develop our artistic direction! We look forward to showing you more as soon as we can.

What's Cooking?

With the arrival of a new 2D artist in the team we have already started working on the future user interface of the game. Also, note that soon you will hear via a hit marker when you hit your target. Furthermore, we are working on the integration of dungeons in an improved version of the procedural map. We are also working on explosives and an improved character controller.

Well that's it for today.

Again, thanks for all the support guys, and be ready to test the game on February 25th and 26th. Join the discord here don’t forget to wishlist the game on Steam here and share our Kickstarter!

Thanks all for reading, see you soon!

Wishlist on Steam!

Reign of Dwarf is already available on Steam! If you haven’t already, we encourage you to add the game to your wishlist and know that it helps us a lot!

Doors

We finally have new door models! The models represent wooden doors, reinforced wooden doors, and metal doors. We wanted to give them a more marked style. The metal door also represents the face of a potential Dwarf King. It's up to you to create your base and use all these doors!
Imagine also incredible double doors to enter your base and your raid weapons!
And remember that you can lock your door, the shutters, the chests, and your influence chest.

Animals

We have a lot of new animals in the game!

Some of them are passive and others more aggressive. For example, the ibex and the deer will run away when you try to attack them. They are also afraid of gunfire. Keep a low profile if you collect their resources afterward. On the contrary, the wolf, the bear, and the boar are aggressive, they will come to attack you when you attack them or when you are closer. We plan to add ranged attacks with spiders by making them spit venom directly at the dwarves.

Know that almost every animal is likely to become your next mount. In the future, you will have a chance to recover a baby animal which you can then raise in a barn dedicated to it.

Looting

You can now use the looting system in the game! First of all, it allows you to be able to use chests by inspecting their content, adding content to it but also recovering everything that is there! So you may soon find your first loot in goblin camps, who knows? This feature also allows you to completely loot your opponent. We remind you that Reign of Dwarf is a rather hardcore game so when you die, the player in front of you has the possibility of looting all of what you were carrying.

Player persistence

We finally added to the game the persistence of the player which consists of all the information of each being saved on the server. Consequently when a player disconnects he goes to sleep and several data such as his position and his stash are kept.

What's cooking?

We have a lot of stuff in work in progress on development. First of all, we hope that we will be available to launch our development server procedural maps. This main feature brings more replayability. On these new maps procedurally generate, we going to add a weather system and different biomes as explained on the Kickstarter page. We noticed different feedback from the community about the UI, so we work on a new UI that fits perfectly with our universe.

Well that's it for today.

Again, thanks for all the support, and don’t forget to share the Kickstarter page, wishlist Reign of Dwarf on Steam, and join the discord to see all news

New 3D models, Digging and Kickstarter!

Welcome to this new devblog!

First of all, we want to wish you a happy new year!
2023 is an important year for the studio and we will start with one of the most important milestones for Reign of Dwarf, the Kickstarter.

Thank you all for your interest, the previous playtest was a great success.
Don’t forget! If you want to test Reign of Dwarf, you can join the Discord and also add the game to your wishlist on Steam.

Kickstarter Coming Soon !

We are happy to announce that next week we will be launching our very first Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. You will find on this page all the information about the game and what we want to create! During the campaign progress, we will also update a FAQ to keep you informed and clarify some of your questions!

Be ready to discover all the rewards that we have prepared for you.

Influence Chest

Since the last devblog, we have continued to implement the Influence Chest features. And you can also discover here the new 3D model of the chest of influence! This asset allows you to instantly see which clan name influences the area you are in as well as the tax rate that is applied!

You can Clear and Removed members of your clan, set up your tax number, rename your clan, open your chest to see and take your resources, and lock and unlock the chest.

Chest Models

Reign of Dwarf has a PVE aspect with the lost camps in the forest where you can fight hordes of orcs or goblins. And of course, you can find much more or less rare loot there. What could be better than magnificent chests to keep your future treasures well hidden? Below you can admire different sizes of chests that you can find in many places on the map, like in the middle of nature, in the ruins of an old castle, in a goblin camp, or at the foot of a powerful monster hidden in the heart of the mountain.

Raid Weapons

These last weeks we are reworked some of our raid weapons! Set up your cart with the catapult or the Gatling and be ready to kill your enemy and become the best clan on your server! Just BOOM all the buildings with the Canon.

Icons

Some inventory updates: we have created new icons to put in the game!

On the left, you can see the inventory news which concerns all the elements that we can loot when we kill and skin an ibex for example! The rest of the icons correspond to the different interactions that you can find in the radial menu of the influence chest

Digging!

Today we’ve made the first test of the digging in multiplier, being 3 starting to mine a cave in the mountains was very cool.

We can’t wait to see what you can do with this. How does it work? When a player asks to mine, we dig holes in the terrain then we create at runtime a mesh that represents the mined area.

One of the biggest challenges was to synchronize digging data when a player connects. The first solution we tried was to keep a list of all digging operations that have been made and play back all the digging when a player connect, but it was increasing very fast and we ended with thousands of operations and it was taking an infinite time to play them back.

The solution we decided to take was to divide the map into chunks, when a player connects we send serialized chunk data to the player and he can regenerate the mesh. This is still a work in progress and there is still a lot of work needed on it, but we are making the maximum to make something cool to play with.

Well that's it for today.

Again, thanks for all the support you guys, and be ready to help us with our upcoming Kickstarter the next week. Join the discord here!

Thanks all for reading, see you soon!

GOBLINS, BLUNDERBUSSINATOR, ANIMALS AND MORE...

Welcome to this new devblog!

First of all, we hope you have a great holiday season! In a few days, we’ll be in 2023 and we’re preparing for this new year a lot of features you’ll love.

Don’t forget to add “Reign of Dwarf” to your wishlist on Steam here, and join us on Discord here to get all the latest news. You should also know that it is no longer possible to become an engineer and test the game however, in a few weeks you will be able to support us directly through our kickstarter. Since the last devblog, we have been working on the preparation of the next steps of the development but we have a lot of things to present to you.

Ibex

Hunt the Ibex! You can now find groups of Ibex spawned on the map, this new feature also includes the possibility to loot their corpses to get bones, and leather and to craft a new armor. Be discreet, this kind of passive beasts has a keen sense of hearing. If they hear you, they will run away. Therefore, ranged weapons are essential to stop these Ibex.

Blunderbussinator

They’re here! Ranged weapons are finally coming to the game with the blunderbussinator. It’s an automatic weapon and a great choice for destroying anything you want from a distance and protecting your back.

We’ve made a rework of the weapon you saw a few months ago in our devblogs. This new version keeps the same original idea but adds a cartoon touch more consistent with our artistic direction. We hope that this weapon will be synonymous with many victories for you.

Goblins

What would a fantasy universe be without enemies? We have finally integrated our first goblins, unlike the Ibex they are aggressive enemies. When you approach one of their camps they can spot you and attack you directly without waiting. For the moment there is only one type of goblin but as you may know from the various devblogs we are planning to integrate bows for these goblins.

Be ready to cross these patrols and get many loots!

Bow

Now that we have integrated ranged weapons into the game, we could easily add the bow. It allows you to easily attack from a distance without being spotted as easily as with blunderbussinator.

Influence Chest

Among the new features integrated into the game, we can tell you about the influence chest.

The Influence Chest has several features, note that it first defines an area around your base (or all buildings attached to the foundation under the influence chest). You will be able to register on an influence chest to define your property. Each player registered in the influence chest can also build and place items in the area. As a consequence players outside the chest will not be able to build or place items in the area.

We are still developing some features such as adding a Code Lock to the chest influence, storing materials in the chest to slow down the wear and tear of your base, or imposing a tax on players who come to take resources in your zone!

Lock Door

Reign of Dwarf is a survival game above all and for that, you will have to equip and reinforce your base. For this nothing better than a lock to prevent others from entering. This lock is not a simple lock, you must first enter a code that you can disclose to the teammates you trust the most.

Well that's it for today.
Again, thanks for all the support you guys, and be ready for our upcoming kickstarter. Join the discord here!

The last few weeks have been very productive, especially since we are intensely preparing our kickstarter. We hope you have a great holiday season and that we will have the opportunity to share good times together in 2023

Thanks all for reading, see you soon!
