Only one city remains on the planet, and it’s only robots who inhabit it now. Protected by a glass dome, Endeavor rises above the once lively area and worker robots are trying their best to keep it going. In order to maintain it, every robot has to do its job perfectly and any imperfections found are being discarded.

Thrown to a junkyard for a malfunction, a single robot worker is on a quest to get itself fixed. But the city sees this loyal worker as a threat now, so all the robots and defenses that protect Endeavor have turned against their former colleague. With the unique ability to control various machines of the city, including any robots that are in the way, this little Robot is on a mission to fix himself and find intelligent life.

Yet it seems that there is no intelligent life left. Only the robots programmed to keep the city nice and clean for people who are nowhere to be found.

Retro Machina - Robotic Roundup!

Greetings Humans,

Since our game was first announced, we've been announcing and introducing many of the robots on our Social Media pages so now we want to gradually get them together so that everyone can enjoy them at once.

Before we go on, if you do not do so already, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Our First Showcase

This week we're going to showcase 3 unique Robots.

First up is the Pogotron

Originally created to help with cutting down trees, this robot comes armed with rotary saws and an anti-gravity system that allows it to float over many obstacles.

When under your control be very careful as its blades will damage anything and anyone (you included)! We supposed it's only fair to mention that this is one of the first robots that you will need to control.

[previewyoutube="8_F0hsrfC9w;full"]

Second we have the Frogbot

These were robots that were originally designed to help keep the waterways of Atomic city clear, however an accident caused their programming to break and now they are more akin to pests that swim in the waterways without an aim.

That said, as these robots are excellent swimmers, when under your control the Frogbots can quickly become an invaluable asset to you!

[previewyoutube="5i9qrajlIAI;full"]

Finally, the Throwbot

Like all of the other robots, the Throwbot was originally created with a specialized role in mind. In this case it was a type of mobile artillery, specially designed to clear the path of obstacles and wreckage when no other robot could do the job. Since humanity vanished, Throwbots have seen more use in this role as the now ghost human cities fall into ruin and decay.

When you take control of this bot, you can use to clear the path in front of you of all obstacles and opposing robots, provided that they don't move before the projectiles land!

Retro Machina - Let's tease the game and enjoy some music while we're at it!

Hello everyone,

Though it's been a while since we last posted here, we've not forgotten you and would like to say that we're currently hard at work on developing the game, working on new robots, locations, and much more fun things for you to eventually enjoy!

To fire things up, we'd like to share a few videos from our game for you to enjoy!

Starting the Boss Fight

Naturally, we have to start with one of the big ones first, right? So let's tease this boss fight!
[previewyoutube="SnBAchfKdFU;full"]https://youtu.be/SnBAchfKdFU[/previewyoutube]

The Ekranoplan in Retro Machina

Retro Machina is all about retro-futurism, and this is hugely evident when you come across this Ground Effect Vehicle that looks strikingly similar to the Lun-class Ekranoplan!
[previewyoutube="vRMyIblAMR0;full"]https://youtu.be/vRMyIblAMR0[/previewyoutube]

Combat OST

We've had quite a few people contact us regarding the game's OST and it seems that it's quite popular. So to give the fans of our game's music something to enjoy, we're putting together a few videos for the full soundtracks. So, get your headset, turn up the volume, and enjoy!

Retro Machina News Roundup - Bosses and Inspiration!

Greetings Retro Machina fans!

Friday is here again and so we're here with our weekly news roundup. Our work this week has mainly been on the game's development as we're pushing forward towards the game's launch so we've been teasing more of the game to the community!

Teasing a Major Boss

The title says it all for this one, we hope you enjoy this quick teaser video!

[previewyoutube="qPs6wp1eT_8;full"]
Our question for you - our community - is, what do you think of this boss, and does it remind you of anything?

Inspiration for the Game!

Did you know that we take inspiration from many interesting parts of our (human) history. One such source of inspiration was the giant Lun-class ekranoplan, a ground effect vehicle (GEV) developed in 1975 by the Soviet Union. You can learn more about this giant vehicle here.

[previewyoutube="vRMyIblAMR0;full"]

That's it for this week's news blast, it is a bit of a short one but we will have something more for you in the coming weeks as we've got a lot of amazing things to show you soon!

Retro Machina News Roundup - October Week 1

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since we've done this, so it's time for another Retro Machina news roundup!

Retro Machina Reviewed by JM TM

We want to start by sharing a review by a member of our community who goes by the name of JM TM.

Image by @JMynceTM on Twitter

We're sure that you (our readers) have read many game reviews in the past, but trust us when we say that you've not read something quite like this before.

Though it is a long read, we highly recommend that you take the time to check it out yourself as not only do you get an invaluable review/insight into Retro Machina by an independent source (JM did not reach out to us for any special information or insights) but in the words of our developers and founders, he captured the heart and soul of the game perfectly.

The quote below is from Rodrigo Pascoal, a game developer for Retro Machina

Reading your analysis so detailed and dedicated, brought me a lot of emotion. You managed to capture all the details of the story we planned for the game. it is really an honor for us to see an analysis made with such commitment by you. on behalf of the entire team, our gratitude and congratulations.

Game Tips and Previews

If you're excited to learn more about Retro Machina, we've got three special tips and tricks version for you!

The first is a very simple-yet-useful lesson. If you are in a room with your objectives in plain sight and if everything feels a little too peaceful, watch out for traps!

[previewyoutube="VUdyqrEL7C8;full"]

The second is a tip for the game. The robot that you control has a special ability that lets it take control of almost all other robots. This will become vital as there will be areas that you will only be able to cross with their direct help.

[previewyoutube="hVkqlulTvss;full"]

The third is advice for the game! Sometimes the first time that you take on a challenge it will be overwhelming. However, do not fear. If at first you cannot progress, take notes of what you encountered, look for a weakness in the defenders, then jump right back in. Knowledge is power!

And that's it for this week's Retro Machina news roundup. If you would like to learn more about our game, please follow us on Twitter as we frequently tweet out special content from Retro Machina!

Retro Machina - Looking at the Game's Art!

Hello everyone,

As we work on the development of Retro Machina, we've noticed that there are quite a number of you that, like us, have fallen in love with the game's art style.

With that in mind, we decided that this would be a great opportunity to have a quick chat with the game's artists to get to know their thoughts about drawing for Retro Machina.

So, without further ado, join us in this quick interview-write up!

Who are the game's artists?

Our art team consists of two people:

  • Diox Jn. - the game's concept artist.
  • Rodrigo Pascoal - the game's 2D Painter.

How did they draw for the game?

As you can see, the game takes a lot of influence from the Retro Futurism movement of the mid to late 20th century. Retrofuturism was a movement in the creative arts that took in the influence of what people at that time (between 1960-1990) thought that the future would look like. This vision of the future was based on the technology of the time and what they anticipated future development to look like.

For Retro Machina, the majority of the game was drawn digitally (in Photoshop) to simulate traditional painting. However, for special items like the collectibles, Diox Jn painted them traditionally with Gouache paint.

If you are unfamiliar with these terms or wish to learn more, check out Wikipedia's page for Retrofuturism and Gouache.

On average, how long did it take to draw an entire scene?

Given the many different components and very personal touches added, a full scene would take up to a month to complete.

What were the artist's most and least favorite things to draw?

It should come as no surprise that the artists love drawing the game's robots! Afterall, Retro Machina is set in a post-apocalyptic world that only has 1 functioning city left, populated, and maintained entirely by robots. The image below was picked by the artists as one of their favorite pieces to draw!

On the flip side, the artists were not that excited about drawing the base pieces of the scenery, things like the floor and the walls, though vital to the game, can be somewhat monotonous to draw so that's no surprise to us!

Closing Thoughts

And with that, we're almost at the end of this write-up. Though it may have been rather short, we hope that you've learned a bit about our artists and how they get about their work.

The last thing that we want to share is this 10-minute gameplay video of our game. Now that you're armed with some deeper knowledge of the game's art development, can you identify the various techniques that were used?
