RWBY: Grimm Eclipse

10/21 Patch and Volume 4 Hype!

Patch Inbound

Whew! Since the launch of Horde and Team JNPR, you all have been busy. Too many Grimm have been slain to count! In the process of thinning out the horde’s numbers, several of you have brought new bugs to our attention. These bugs have been a type of Horde mode for us, but management gets upset when we bring turrets to work, so…

This patch addresses the issues below.

  • Changes to aura depleted and recharging SFX
  • Networking optimizations
  • Steam Cloud Save is no longer required to save your game's progress
  • Fixed an issue where ranking up would report your new rank as incorrect
  • The scoreboard no longer flashes briefly when returning to the lobby
  • Players will now see a message when their host disconnects
  • Fixed a bug where Pyrrha’s Tier 2 Team Attack upgrade did an incorrect amount of AOE damage (Time to update your spreadsheets)
  • Fixed a bug with Ren's Tier 3 Team Attack that caused his ranged fire to miss enemies
  • Ren can now continue attacking after dodging in the air
  • Fixed a bug where Port's dialogue could be cut-off by a level transition in EF1-2
  • Fixed an issue where Jaune would use Blake's VO for a team attack (Or did we just squash Jaune’s dreams of being a voice impersonator?)
  • Plugged a collision hole in EF2
  • Fixed collision issue in EF1 where players may get stuck on stalagmites
  • Fixed host migration for Horde Mode so players no longer need to start over
  • Players exiting a pregame lobby will now see a confirmation message

We’ll continue to keep our eyes on the forums as long as you continue to let us hear those beautiful voices of yours. Development continues as does bug squashing.

RWBY Volume 4!!

We're sure we don't need to remind any of you, but RWBY Volume 4 kicks off tomorrow (Oct 22) at 10AM (CST). We're all super excited. Miles and Kerry haven't ruined much of this volume for us, so we'll be watching, on the edge of our seats, right along side you all. Personally, I'm excited to see the dynamics of Team RNJR as they step off on their new adventure.

Get signed up for FIRST so you can watch Volume 4 live with the rest of the world!

In other news, we here at RT Games are huge fans of our friends at other development studios. The image below was born from excitement and made as an homage to the fine folks behind the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2. Here’s a shot of the newly released Team JNPR (probably) on the dusty horizon of one of Remnant’s deserts.

Until next time, partners.

Team JNPR, Horde Mode, Localization, and Mac Release!

Hold on to your butts!

Team JNPR, Horde Mode, localization, and Mac build will be available on Steam this Thursday, Oct 13, 2016! That’s maybe the most news-packed sentence we’ve ever had in an update. Yup, this is a big one. Now let’s jump into the juicy details...

New Playable Characters: Team JNPR

Since the launch of Grimm Eclipse, one of the loudest requests from our community has been to add Team JNPR. Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren are now all suited up and combat ready. We wanted these four characters to play different from Team RWBY so we’ve made sure their styles and abilities felt fresh, while remaining true to the RWBY animated series.

As you play through Campaign or Horde, your adventures will be fully voiced by the actual voice actors of the show! Rediscover who’s behind the events of Mountain Glenn as Jaune (Miles Luna). Take on groups of mutated Grimm as Nora (Samantha Ireland) and Pyrrha (Jen Brown) and hear Ren (Neath Oum) make a joke. Sorta... Kinda?

RWBY: Grimm Eclipse has always allowed choosing your favorite character to play. If you want to play as a team full of Ruby, well… “Go team Ruby!” Now with the addition of JNPR, you and your friends will be able to mix and match as you please. Maybe get ready for the October 22nd release of Volume 4 by playing as Team RNJR?

In general, each member of JNPR has a character skill tree similar to RWBY. Unlike RWBY, JNPR’s varies a bit from the standard Ultimate, Team Attack, and Ranged trees. Each new teammate has a unique spin on the old formula. More details below.

Jaune Arc
As the team leader, we felt Jaune needed to be able to support his friends in battle. His Ultimate can grant his teammates a brief heal, speed boost, or damage boost. If you’re familiar with the animated series, Jaune hasn’t demonstrated a ranged ability. In Grimm Eclipse, rather than shooting a projectile, Jaune raises his shield and charges forward until he reaches a set distance, or better yet, bashes into an enemy. He also has a perk that lets him gain Ultimate energy if his teammates finish off team attacks that he sets up. Jaune’s upgradeable, heavy attack is designed with team attacks in mind too.

Jaune’s a bit of a challenge to play single player, but in a multiplayer; your friends will love the boosts he grants his teammates. Horde Mode anyone?

Nora Valkyrie
The ever chatty Nora brings her electric personality to the battlefield in the form of upgradeable chain lightning attacks. Some of her attacks continue on to the next enemy in the form of electricity. Of course she has her giant hammer, but as it turns out, it’s also a gun. Nora has a grenade launcher that fires unlike any other character in the game. She can also upgrade her launcher to fire mines that explode when enemies step near them.

When you’re ready to bring the electricity-infused hammer down on the Creatures of Grimm, Nora is always game to break some legs! Boop, indeed.

Pyrrha Nikos
A well-trained huntress, Pyrrha is proficient on the battlefield in a variety of ways. Pyrrha is the only character that can upgrade her default combo. These additional attacks allow her to take out baddies at an alarming rate. Miss Nikos also has the ability to upgrade her counter -- sending her shield bouncing off and stunning several surrounding enemies, if one should dare attack.

Extended combo strings, a hugely advantageous counter, and ranged attacks that pierce all enemies in its path are sure to help find the Grimm’s Achilles heel.

Lie Ren
Similar to Jaune, Ren is also designed with team attacks in mind. His approach is a bit different than the others though. Ren can setup and (if his teammates are too busy) finish off his own team attacks. As another character with an upgradeable heavy attack, Ren can focus a portion of his aura into his attack to unleash a stunning area of effect. When ready, Ren’s Ultimate allows him to dart around from enemy to enemy dealing large amounts of damage.

Usually reserved, Ren is packed with style and a quick approach to battle allowing him to cover ground quickly and drop enemies even faster.

In summary - Team JNPR includes 4 new playable characters each with their own unique abilities and upgrades, plus they’re all voiced by the actual show actors. All of the above awesomeness can be yours for the low, low price of $4.99 (USD).

HORDE MODE

Horde Mode is a FREE update and a new challenge added to Grimm Eclipse. Gather your team and fight off waves of Grimm. As you defeat enemies, you’ll accrue a currency (lien) that allows you to purchase a variety of turret defenses. Use your team, turrets, and skills correctly and you may just survive the horde.

Horde mode offers three brand new maps featuring familiar Beacon locations: Emerald Forest, Forever Fall, and Mountain Glenn. Horde Mode also comes with a new Grimm to slay: the Mini-Deathstalker. These little fellas might be small, but they are mighty!

Horde Mode is a FREE update to all current owners. If you’d like a bit more info, we covered Horde Mode in greater detail previously HERE. Check it out!

Horde Mode News Update

Hello Team!

We’re back again for a quick update on RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. The weather outside is cooling down, while the Horde Mode and JNPR packs are coming in hot. We sure do talk about the weather a lot in these opening paragraphs, huh?

New York Comic Con

This update is meant to focus on Horde with a splash of JNPR, but if you’re at NYCC this year, we’ll have both on-hand to play! Come out to booth 756 and slay wave upon wave of baddies as Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, Ren, or your old favs from team RWBY. While you’re there, check out the games we are publishing: Battlesloths and Super Rad Raygun. Lots of fun to be had in New York this weekend for Rooster Teeth fans!

Horde

Development of Horde mode is coming to a close. In fact, we are aiming to launch it next week! Thanks to all of you that kept the chatter lively in the Horde thread Abe created. There were several good points and ideas that influenced how Horde was developed. As it stands, we’ve been having a blast with Horde playtests. We cannot wait for you all to hop in, pick your favorite characters, and slay epic sh!t-tons of Grimm.

In Horde mode, you will be in charge of ensuring the safety of several security stations. Wave after wave of enemies will try to destroy you, your friends, and the stations. This mode is designed for teamwork. Work with other players to plan your team makeup, skill trees, and which turrets are best to use. As the horde advances, more and more stations will require your attention. Sure, four players can handle one station, but how will you divide your resources when you need to cover four areas? As you defeat enemies, you'll accrue Lien, the currency of Remnant. You'll use Lien to make purchases from a variety of turrets. Your turrets will need replaced often if not protected. This mode will be a challenge, but many of you have been practicing for this, so go get’em.

How about maps? There will be three Horde maps included in this update. Each map was designed for horde and set in a familiar location, but they are not maps found in the campaign. Forever Fall will require players to travel long distances between stations. Mountain Glenn demands that players cover more and more stations as the game progresses.

For the Emerald Forest map, we wanted to do something a little different -- honestly, something special to honor the early days of the game’s development. Emerald Forest is a remastering of the RTX 2015 demo map. This was the first time we showed the game publically as a studio.

Awhile back, we mentioned that Horde would include a new Creature of Grimm. You’ll have to wait to see how it fits into the ranks of other enemies. Until then here’s a glimpse of what we call the Mini-Deathstalker.

*click* *click* *hsss*

Achievements! Horde mode will also come with six new achievements for you to hunt. These are all tied to the various ways to play Horde. When the time comes, defend those stations and use turrets, alone or as a team.

Bonus

Since the early days of RWBY:GE’s development, we wanted to get an exclusive music track from Jeff Williams. He’s made so many amazing tracks for the core RWBY show that we Homer Simpson-style drooled at the prospect of having something made for Grimm Eclipse. Well, that time has come. When you download the new Horde update, you’ll notice new main menu instrumental piece music. When you watch the credits of the game, you be able to hear the fully voiced version in all its Merlot-tastic splendor. We’re excited for you to hear it!

That’s it for now. Next time we’ll chat about all things JNPR!

Rooster Teeth Games is also premiering two new games at PAX West. The action-packed Battlesloths by Invisible Collective, a game that features 4 vs 4 Sloth on Sloth violence, as well a game by Tru Fun Entertainment called Super Rad Raygun, a retro platformer where you battle evil communist robots in a last ditch effort to save 1980s America.

We’ll have more details on Horde and JNPR in the coming weeks so stay tuned. Get your bodies ready!

Grimm Eclipse coming to Mac, Playstation 4, and Xbox One
So what else have we been up to besides working on Horde Mode and Team JNPR?? Well, I’m so glad you asked... We’ve been working on a Mac version for Steam (free for all current and future Steam owners). We’ve also been hard at work converting the game over to Playstation 4 and Xbox One! The console versions are looking absolutely amazing, but we have a busy holiday certification schedule to contend with. Fingers crossed we get through the certification process without any major setbacks. If all goes according to plan, you’ll be able to play Grimm Eclipse on your console this Holiday season. Woot! Woot!

So that’s all the news we have for now. We hope everyone had an awesome summer and is ready for a kickass school year / work year / dropout year. Whatever you do to keep yourself busy; best of luck. You got this!

High fives from the RT Games team.

Nora and Turrets! Need we say more?

Nora and Turrets! Need we say more?

Hello Team!

Welcome to August. Where our Texan thermostats are constantly in triple digits and our shoes melt to the parking lot. When we’re not downing water to stay hydrated, the team has been cranking away on Horde mode and the upcoming character pack for JNPR. Y’all want to see some of the progress? Let’s go!

Horde

As it stands, I believe we’ve only said Horde mode exists. We haven’t really divvied out too many details about the vision of this new mode, but know that gameplay will be inspired by the early RTX demos from the game’s past. While the horde design crew is still busy nailing down more handcrafted nuances, they wanted to show off something a little less subtle: TURRETS!
This is an early look at an untextured asset.

The Horde team has been chatting with the RWBY animation crew (Kerry & Miles) about a few mechanics to see if they fit in the RWBYverse. Two main features came out of that meeting, turrets and another thing so awesome and fun we’ll have to save it for a future news post. (That and we haven’t quite started on getting him...I mean it… into the game...) We’ll have more news about horde as we continue to playtest and tweak it in the coming weeks.

JNPR

It’s still early for team JNPR. We talked about which JNPR teammate to start work on first, the natural choice was Nora. This is an early look at Nora! In game! Taunting! Her anims, coloring, etc... are a work in progress. BOOP!

Tribute to Monty in Forever Fall

Separate from your Grimm slaying ways, you all have proven to be quite the group of hunters. I’m not talking about the number of Beowolves and Androids you’ve eliminated. I’m talking about easter eggs! We mentioned there was an easter egg way back with the Forever Fall update in May. Last night, the hunt came to a conclusion. Here’s a bit of backstory from the level’s designer, Andy Cortez.

Hello fellow hunters and huntresses,

After searching every encounter and scrutinizing every pixel, the Forever Fall "easter egg" has finally been discovered!

While designing this level, I knew I wanted to add something special for Monty. Rather than calling it an "easter egg", I always saw it as more of a tribute. The first episode of Volume 3 inspired me to add his signature somewhere, so I decided to draw it in the terrain on the 3rd encounter.

Honestly, I worried it wouldn't be found. It's difficult to get high enough to get a good view of it, but I should never doubt you all.

-Andy Cortez (@MaximumCortez)

After a bit of research, and not to say that this wasn’t a community effort, but it seems credit for this discovery goes to QuasiSnipr1048. Now that you’ve all found the Forever Fall tribute, take your egg hunting to the newest levels of Grimm Eclipse. Good luck, egg hunters! (Any Ready Player One fans out there?)

Patch #1

Hello Team!

The Rooster Teeth Games team has been spending their summer vacation roaming around the world of Remnant on a never-ending quest to bring you more goodness in RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. What do we have in store for you this time? Well, Patch #1 brings a lot of improvements to the game to address community feedback as well as several bug fixes affecting the game.

Bug Fixes

  • Collision: Can no longer get stuck inside rock by the control center at the end of Chapter 1.
  • Collision: Can no longer fall through a gap near the platform with the artifact in Chapter 2.
  • Audio: Boarbatusk spin SFX no longer gets stuck in a loop.
  • UI: Mouse cursor now hides during gameplay while using a gamepad.
  • Networking: Fixed a bug where if you entered a multiplayer lobby and left, you would remain connected to the lobby.

Improvements

  • Difficulty Setting: Added Single Player difficulty settings for Normal, Hard, Legendary, and Eclipse.
  • Checkpoints: Additional checkpoints were added to every level so that you don’t have to repeat encounters that you already completed.
  • UI: Can now go back to previous screens (all the way back to the Main Menu) from the Character Select screen.
  • UI: Labels for Ultimate, Team Attack, and Ranged added to upgrade screen to make it more clear as to what the abilities are for.
  • Gameplay: Made several gameplay changes to the boss battle in Chapter 10.
  • Gameplay: Made Control Center defense more of a challenge.
  • Cutscene: Polished the end cutscene

Other Topics

  • Are your progress and stats not saving? We’re working on a fix for this, but until then please make sure to enable Steam’s cloud save feature. Do this:

    1. First, go to Steam’s Settings menu, select “Cloud”, and check the box for “Enable Steam Cloud synchronization.”
    2. Next, right-click on the game from the list in your Library, select Properties, go to the Updates tab, and check the box for “Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization for RWBY: Grimm Eclipse”

  • Is the game crashing on you after the title screen? This is likely an issue related to AMD processors with integrated graphics cards, Intel integrated graphics cards, and on machines that do not meet the minimum requirements (for reference, our minimum requirements our listed at the bottom of the store page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/418340). You can try forcing the game to run in DirectX 9 as a workaround by configuring launch options in Steam. Do this by:

    1. Right-click on the game from the list in your Library
    2. Select Properties
    3. In the “General” tab, select SET LAUNCH OPTIONS
    4. In the text field, add -force-d3d9
    5. Hit OK
    6. Launch the game

    * Note - Performance when launching DirectX 9 will vary, and we are not officially supporting it. This is available simply as a workaround to those unable to launch the game.

Upcoming Updates

We have a lot more planned throughout the year that we’ll be adding to the game. We’re excited to share the details, however we’re still solidifying the schedule. We plan on announcing dates soon for Horde Mode, Team JNPR, as well as a Mac OS X version.

What do you think?

If you have question, let us know in the Steam forums, Reddit , or even directly to a team member on Twitter.

Hotfix #1 is live for all players!

Hello Team!

With RWBY: Grimm Eclipse launched, the game is in the hands of more hunters than ever! With that, comes the discovery of new issues. This past week the team has been working to fix a few such issues: unscathed achievement, high score achievement, and Hunter Ranks.

We tested the Hunter Rank issue in an opt-in branch, with some of your help - thanks! That branch has now been pushed to all players. If you have continued problems with your Hunter Ranks, let us know. We also noticed some bugs with a couple of our achievements, so we fixed those too.

Moving forward, if you have any issues, head to the forums and sound off. Our team is continuing to fix bugs and support the game/ community.

Bug Reporting Thread

Happy hunting,
Rooster Teeth Games

HOTFIX #1

Hey RWBY Hunters! Hope you're enjoying all the new content?

We've been watching the forums, trying to log all the bugs as they are reported. Thanks to everyone who posted bug reports. Some are known issues, others are mysteries we're looking into, and others may be related to specific hardware specs. We're adding them all to our task list and will get them resolved as soon as we can!

RANK:
We've seen several bug reports about advancing your RANK. Seems to work fine for some, but not for others. So we've been digging into the issue and think we have a hotfix ready for you to try.

There's a new "Opt-In" beta available for those who can help us test it out. Just follow these instructions and you'll get the new HOTFIX #1.

1) Exit and Restart Steam
2) Right click RWBY:GE, select Properties.
3) Under the Betas tab, select "hotfix" from the dropdown menu.
4) The update should start downloading. Give it a test and let us know if you can RANK up now!

FYI - You will see a watermark on the lower-center of your screen that says HOTFIX. This will remind you that you're playing the hotfix version. Once we verify all is working properly with Ranks, we'll push these changes into the main branch of the game.

There seems to be some confusion on how you advance from Rank 0 to Rank 1. You MUST level up all 4 characters to Level 10 before you can advance in Rank. There are more challenges for ranking to higher levels. We'll write up a Ranking Guide and post that in the discussion forums.

Again, we're still working on the other bug reports, but we wanted to get the Ranking issue fixed ASAP!

Hope it all goes well. Good luck on the battlefields of Remnant! ːsteamhappyː

Cheers,
ROOSTER TEETH GAMES

THIS IS THE DAY WE'VE WAITED FOR! FULL RELEASE!

Hello Team!

RWBY: Grimm Eclipse is ready for release! That’s right. Today is the day. No amount of airhorns could match the team’s excitement. Here’s a quick update on what’s NEW!

Explore New Areas of Remnant

Continue the story from the first half of RWBY:Grimm Eclipse. Follow clues onto the dangerous island of Dr. Merlot. Explore Merlot’s secret lab to discover the truth behind his obsession with his mutated Grimm.

Chase Your Friends’ Hunter Rank

New to RWBY:GE are Hunter Ranks. As you play through the game, your characters’ progress is saved. Continue playing as the various characters and you’re likely to max out each of their stats. From here, you can “rank up” your Hunter Rank. In doing so, your character’s progress is reset, but you unlock a new set of challenges to tackle and a unique gem to show off your dedication. Good luck!

More to Come

Now that RWBY:Grimm Eclipse has reached full release, we’re going to shift our focus to new content and continued bug fixing. Horde mode is first on the list, but we have several other wish-list items that we hope to tackle. Stay tuned for more updates on all that!

Thank YOU!

HIGH FIVES, Steam Community! As a team, we decided to open our development to you, the RWBY fans. Many of you are aware, but we’re a very small dev team. Your constant flow of feedback helped us make this game what it is today and we couldn’t thank you more. We’re looking forward to your continued support as we continue to support the game in the months ahead!
