Update 2.0: Create Your Own Personal Hell in the Enforcer Edition
Want to fully customize your holiday in Hell? đ„
Now you can!
Alongside our current âEscape the Mazeâ mode, weâve added two new gameplay modes for those of you who want a dash more (or a dash less) carnage in their infernal soup.
Speedrun Mode
For those of you who yearn to dash and tear your way through demons at a record pace, weâve added a Speedrun Mode. Unleash your inner run-and-gunslinger and take on each of the Guardians in their own gauntlet. Challenge your friends or even the entire Scathe Discord community to speedrun competitions. Do you have what it takes to set a new record time?
Arcade Mode
If youâre looking for a more zen experience as you battle your way through the legions of the damned, weâve added an Arcade Mode, a stripped back version of Scathe where all you need to do is focus on killing as many enemies as possible to pump up your score. Keep your trigger finger itchy and your legs moving to snag that top score!
Scathe now features even more modifiers, so you can totally customize your experience:
Weapon of Choice - You can now start your game with every weapon and every spell available thanks to our All Weapons modifier. Cut out the search time and blast IN to your enemies with a full arsenal.
Canât Touch Me - Enjoy feeling untouchable with the Invincibility modifier. Now you can slice your way through demons without fear!
Demonize with Demon Eyes - Tear through your enemies like paper with the Constant Demon Mode modifier.
Live Fast, Die Never - You can forget about checkpoints and collecting extra lives with the Infinite Lives modifier. Toggle this on and youâll just respawn wherever you were when you died.
The More, the Murderier - Select the Demon Overload modifier and get ready for the challenge of your (probably quite short) life. Think of it as Scathe: Now With MORE Demons!
PandAMMOnium - Forget about ammo pickups and shoot to your heartâs content with the Infinite Ammo modifier.
Weâve also made a few quality of life improvements, such as:
Dash killing demons will now provide a small health gain.
The Hell Hammer will now vent off a little bit of steam after every clip to provide a break in firing (and give it a much needed break).
Brand new firing audio for the Hell Hammer - bringing more boom to the room!
Head bob now defaults to zero for a more retro feel.
Landing a headshot will now provide you with some extra ammo as a well-earned reward.
AI spawn rates and timeouts have been improved in barrier sections.
Fleshies and other ball-type enemies now drop ammo on death.
Collision has been removed on multiple props in zones for a smoother movement experience.
A bridge has been added to Oxideâs zone to help prevent players from falling into lava.
And squashed a few more bugs:
Swarm AI no longer stops moving if only one section of it remains.
Huge improvements to AI spawning so they donât spawn too close. This excludes arenas and barrier sections.
Toned down the joypad vibration when fighting the enemy Sledge.
Fixed multiple areas where AI could become stuck.
Misaligned walls in three zones have been correctly aligned.
Fixed bridges that would fail to descend correctly when all Demons were eliminated.
Fixed the issue where the joypad prompt would remain static on the screen after losing your last life and disconnecting.
Jitters should no longer submerge into the ground in a specific zone after spawning.
First of all, weâve added some major new functionality to improve performance and help make your journey through the infernal labyrinth that much easier!
Alongside FSR 21.2 and DLSS, Scathe now supports Intel XeSS đ„
Whether youâre using an Intel GPU or not, this new technology will upscale performance without sacrificing image quality, so you can enjoy the underworld at high speed and in high resolution đ
Weâve also included a few quality of life changes based on community feedback:
Take Control - Lots of added controller support, so you never have to put that controller down again!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Hit point markers have been set in better locations above/around enemies for improved visibility.
Slide to the Left - Sliders in the gameplay settings are now smooth.
Look at Me! - Visual highlights have now been added for any unread items in the gameplay menu.
Cutting Back - Cutscene files sizes have been reduced to improve performance on less powerful PCs.
And here is a list of the minor bugs that weâve resolved:
The Warlock not saving into the Wiki after being discovered;
The âOpen the Mapâ objective completing when you go into the pause menu instead;

Update 1.0: Prepare to be blinded by the Guiding Light Update đ„
Weâre excited to announce that our first free update has gone live đŽ
Before we discuss what changes weâve made, weâd like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback on Scathe via Steam reviews, our Steam forum, and our Discord. All of the quality of life changes weâve made in this update were based on this community feedback, so we couldnât have done it without you đ€
Below, youâll find our guide to all of the changes weâve made to the game, along with a list of bugs that weâve squashed along the way đ
Updated Maps
Want to know what gore-splattered secrets and explosive weapons await you in the infernal labyrinth?
Weâve updated our map system so that zones containing Dark Magic spells, new weapons, and bosses will be signposted on the World Map using new icons đ
Zones youâve already visited will contain information about how many runes youâve collected, what weapon you picked up there, what spell you picked up there, and your overall percentage completion for that zone.
Weâve also added a zone map, so you can see clearly where you are in each zone, how many possible exits there are, and how youâll need to navigate through the zone if you want to reach one of them đșïž
Fast Travel
We want you to have the smoothest possible trip through Hell, so weâve added fast travel to Scathe đ
All you need to do is click on a zone youâve already visited and it will give you the option to fast travel there. If the zone has multiple entrances/exits, youâll be placed at the entrance where you originally entered the zone, so you can replay your past glory.
New Objectives System
Every zone now comes with a banner that contains a list of objectives, which will help guide you on your journey through the fiery depths of the underworld đ„
These objectives will encourage you to find a certain number of runes in each zone, point you in the direction of exits that lead to weapons/spells/bosses, and much more. As you accomplish each objective, it will be marked off of the checklist, for that extra sense of demonic achievement!
If you want a real challenge, there is also a speedrun time set for each zone, so get those running shoes on đš
Improved Tutorial System
Weâve fleshed out our tutorial system to include more in-depth information on how to use new weapons, Dark Magic spells, and Demon Mode đź
Much like the Demon Compendium, you can access this information at any time in the main menu, so all of that demon-slaying knowledge is at your fingertips!
Prompts for the face wipe and dash will now no longer be in the sidebar like the tutorials, but will instead be a stronger prompt in the middle of the screen.
To finish, here are a few of the minor bugs that have also been fixed:
Voiceovers and subtitles going missing during gameplay;
The host and client both being able to drop out of the world in a certain special door within Zone 34;
The host and client being able to escape the world yet again through the Guardian Doors for Scourge and Chaos;
The achievements âSuch Sinâ and âScathe Tooâ not triggering properly when completed;
Game occasionally crashing for one or multiple clients during co-op games after all lives were lost;
Too many Scuttlers spawning during the fight with Scourge, causing FPS drops;
Walls in Zone 28 appearing to be misaligned with the floor;
A pillar in Zone 47 appearing to be misaligned with the environment.

Quality of Life Changes and Demonic Bug Squashing: Notes for Patch #1 đ
Weâve made a few quality of life changes to Scathe to make your journey through the underworld that much smoother đ„
We also noticed there were a few extra bugs in the infernal labyrinth than we had initially planned, so weâve gone around with our handy fly swatter (and a flamethrower, for back-up) to squash all of those unwanted bugs đ
Thank you so much to all of the community members who submitted bug reports. We wouldnât have been able to do it without you!
---------
First of all, weâve included some quality of life changes in this new build based on community feedback:
The Big Boss - The health of all bosses has been reduced.
Itâs Ball or Nothing - The health of all ball-type enemies (Fleshies, Swampies, Pinballs, Industriballs, and Invisiballs) has been reduced.
Fly, My Pretties! - Demon squishy bits travel further and look better when performing a dash kill.
Ammo Let You Finish - The number of ammo pick-ups in each zone has been increased and the amount of ammo each weapon can hold has been increased!
Weapon of Choice - You will no longer encounter ammo pick-ups for weapons you havenât discovered.
Reap What You Sow - An updated model for the Reaper demon has been added.
The Divine Interrupter - The voiceover from the Divine Creator and Sacrilegious can now be enabled/disabled in the Audio Settings.
Stop, Hell Hammer Time - The total game time stat has now been added to the pause menu.
Filter Friendly - All filters will now be unlocked for new users.
---------
Secondly, here are the bugs that have been squished in our first patch:
Weapon Wheel of Misfortune - The bug with the clientâs weapon wheel during co-op games has been fixed, so your friends (and fellow enforcers) can rest easy knowing they can now switch between their weapons with impunity.
Hokus Bogus - Clients were sometimes unable to use spells during co-op games.
Music to Our Ears - The bug where the music would stop after various pick-ups or when the Demon Mode spell was used has been resolved, so you can rock out without fear of losing your demon-slaying groove.
Divine Resolution - Scathe now supports ultrawide resolution! Weâve added the new resolution to the menu settings.
Limitless - The Health and Magic Bar would reset after transitioning to new or previous zones during co-op games.
Get the Boot - Clientâs ID would sometimes fail to update instantly after kicking a player out from a co-op game.
Whereâs that Warlock - The Warlock mini-boss would sometimes get stuck too high up in the zone.
My Eyes! - The excessive brightness of the lava has been toned down on low graphical settings.
Quoth the Raven - The Raven (Magic Gun) would sometimes disappear after the player lost a life.
---------
And last but not least, here are a few other minor bugs that have also been resolved:
The incorrect number of lives being displayed for clients during co-op games;
The incorrect amount of ammo being displayed for clients during co-op games;
The Magic Bar failing to deplete for the client when using the Raven;
The hanging corpses in the environment showing metal impacts when shot instead of fleshy impacts;
The Magic Ring sometimes failing to appear for the client after they rejoined an ongoing co-op session;
The game reverting back to the Raven instead of the Magic Ring after transitioning between zones;
The Magic Bar continuing to deplete after casting the Freeze spell and while the spell was still active;
Sledge and Shock Sledge enemies disappearing completely after a player loses a life;
Razorback enemies becoming stuck after an arena had been cleared;
Overlapping text in the name and demon information box for the Grenadier Reaper enemy;
The inconsistency in the Ripper weapon pick-up animation if the player is holding the Raven;
Players sometimes taking damage after walking over the corpses of Winnowers during the mini-boss fight;
Demons being able to walk through a barrier in Zone 11;
The âChecking Privilegesâ pop-up lacking functionality with keyboard and controller;
The secret door in Zone 42 not closing properly after being triggered;
Shadow Demons have now been moved so they spawn in more appropriate locations/zones;
The Prism enemies now only spawn one at a time, since we discovered they lack collision with one another;
Extra spawns from Zone 7 have been removed;
The difficulty of Zone 24 has been scaled down to match other zones.
---------
Now that weâve dispatched all of those pesky bugs, weâll be focusing all of our attention on our upcoming update!
Weâve been taking on all of your awesome community feedback and have compiled a list of more quality of life changes we will implement into Scathe based on your feedback. Weâll be releasing an announcement shortly with more details on what will be included in that first update.

Before you grab that Hell Hammer and get to work crushing legions of demons, weâve prepared this handy guide on how to make the most of your trip to the underworld.
Scathe is set within an infernal labyrinth so, as you travel through each zone, youâll be faced with multiple possible exits and different branching paths to follow. Youâll encounter different weapons, enemies, biomes, spells, and bosses at different times depending on the route you take, so every playthrough is a hellishly fresh experience!
Keep in mind that this isnât just Hell; itâs Bullet Hell!
To survive in Scathe, youâll have to master the art of dodging deadly projectiles and explosive enemies at every turn. If you find yourself dying far more often than youâd like, why not recruit a few of your friends to help? Scathe features up to 4-player drop-in/drop-out online co-op, so you can get assistance whenever and wherever you need it. As the old saying goes, friends who slay together stay together!
Now on to the important question: How do you maximise your killing potential?
Alongside a hefty arsenal of guns, flamethrowers, and crossbows that shoot circular saws, youâll want to scour the maze in search of the ancient relics left behind by the Fallen Mages. These relics contain potent spells known as Dark Magic, which will allow you to summon friendly aid, freeze your enemies in their tracks, and much more.
If youâre playing in co-op mode, spells such as Heal and Demon Mode will affect your whole party whenever you cast them. After all, sharing is caring!

LAUNCH DELAY: Technical issues with Steam
For everyone who has been notified via Steam that the game is available for purchase, we're unfortunately experiencing a delay where Steam is failing to update our product page correctly.
The game itself has been released on our end and we've done everything we can, but we are now waiting to hear back from Steam Support to see why the "Buy Now" button and other purchase options aren't available on our page.
We really appreciate your patience during this time and we will release another (more colourful and exciting) announcement once Scathe is available for purchase đ„
â Harness the Power of Dark Magic â
Do you have what it takes to master the dark arts of the underworld? đ„
Alongside your arsenal of explosive weapons, youâll wield powerful spells in Scathe to protect yourself or brutally dispatch your enemies đ
But how do you use them?
In this announcement, weâll be taking a closer look at how the Dark Magic mechanic works and how you can use it to maximise your demon-slaying potential đ
In order to channel the dark arts, you first need to gather energy to power them, but a couple of batteries isnât going to cut it. To really make the magic happen, youâll need to gather the souls of demons by, you guessed it, killing them!
As you collect these souls, youâll notice that the purple bar located in the bottom left hand corner of the screen will start filling up. How many souls you need will depend on which spell you want to use, with more powerful spells understandably requiring more souls.
So where do I find these spells in the first place?
Weâre not going to give away their secret locations, but weâd recommend keeping an eye out for the corpses of Fallen Mages đ
We donât want to spoil too much of the fun, so weâll only mention a couple of examples here to give you an idea of how potent Dark Magic can be đź
If youâre struggling to dodge a storm of bullets and you find yourself full of more holes than usual, the Heal spell can be the ideal way to even up the balance. Take out a few demons, endure a few minor gunshot wounds, use their souls to cast Heal on yourself, and rejoin the fray. If youâre playing online co-op and youâre feeling particularly generous, you can even cast Heal on your allies!
Looking for something a bit more offensive?
Freeze will allow you to stop your enemies in their tracks, giving you a chance to line up your headshots and pick them off one by one. As the old saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold âïž
The Fallen Mages represent one of the most formidable demons in the underworld. They wield untold magical power and are able to teleport between sections of the infernal labyrinth at will. Many are the enforcers who have encountered them and met a painful end.
Before their death, some of these Fallen Mages trapped fragments of their knowledge within ancient relics. Find these relics and feel their arcane wisdom flow through you in the form of Dark Magic.

Thatâs why weâre excited to announce that Scathe will be taking part in Yogscastâs Tiny Teams đ„
Tiny Teams is an event designed to spotlight indie games that have a solo or micro developer team and prove that size doesnât matter when it comes to creating incredible games đź
Scathe will be featured as part of the action-packed livestream on the Yogscast Twitch channel, so tune in live and youâll get the chance to see some exclusive gameplay đ
So why does Scathe qualify for the event?
Thatâs because Scathe is being developed by a micro team of just 3 people!
Damage State is made up of programmer Chris, and artists Tim and Manuel. We all previously worked in the triple A industry and together we have over 40 years of combined experience in game development. What started out as a passion project between the three of us has now evolved into a glorious beast that weâll be unleashing into the world on August 31st 2022 đ
