Patch Notes v 0.2.3 Square231 Edition

Hey Scholars! This patch will introduce more quests, a new NPC, and this patch will allow you to use the same spells that the Demigods have been firing at you!

New Spells



Rain Cloud
Create a rain cloud which damages an area over time. This spell can be combined with others.


Ormungs Torrent
Fire the spell Splash around you, just like Ormung!
This spell can be combined with others and will only be unlocked after beating Ormung.

Aion’s Obsidian
Summon Aion’s Obsidian. This rock will rotate around you. It must be combined with spells and will only be unlocked after beating Aion.

Town Upgrades



Abuela has entered the Fire Domain and needs your help. Once you’ve rescued Abuela she’ll appear in town. Abuela can destroy spells and refund you a portion of the resources you’ve spent on them. So if you want to change your build mid run this can help!

At first she’ll only be able to refund two spells at a time. But as you upgrade her shop she’ll be able to refund more and more spells! So make sure to build her a tent for shade.

New Quests



As a reminder all quests appear on the town board near the Gateway. Whenever a villager asks for help, be sure to check the town board for new quests.


Build a Tent for Abuela:
Talk to Abuela and have her refund two of your spells. She will tell you that she’s too tired to do anymore and she’ll put a quest on the town board.
Gather clay, wood, and star crystals to build a tent for Abuela. Next time you come to town Abuela will be able to refund up to 5 spells now that she has some shade and can cool off!


Defeat Seren:
Defeating the Demigod Seren unlocks Seren’s Falling Star for all future runs.

Defeat Ormung:
Defeating the Demigod Ormung unlocks Ormungs Torrent for all future runs.

Defeat Aion:
Defeating the Demigod Aion unlocks Aion’s Obsidian for all future runs.

Spell Updates



Nekra’s Scythe:
Nekra’s Scythe will now react to other spells in a wider range. Originally the hitbox to trigger combos was a bit too small. I’ve extended that range so it’s easier to combo.

Null Hour:

Gameplay Upgrades




  • If a spell increases or decreases your damage, a prompt will now show.
  • Enemy Smush Smush will no longer heal for a flat 10hp. Their healing is now based on their level.
  • Added some camera smoothing.
  • Tuned the health and level scaling back a bit. The damage they’re doing is appropriate, but I think they’re just a little bit too tanky atm. It’s also hard to keep your walls up to date with how fast they level up in the dungeons.
  • Filled out the sky castle with some debris so it doesn’t look as empty. I will be adding more and more to each zone to fill them out as time goes on.
  • I created more UI updates to try and scale to WideScreen Monitors. Let me know if the shop UI is working now!


Bug Fixes




  • Widescreen Support is confirmed! I literally bought a new monitor to test it myself.
  • Gaia’s Shield description has been fixed.
  • The Radar Puzzle was giving false positives when scanning. This has been fixed.
  • Fixed graphical error where beam spells would glitch on the screen before rendering correctly.
  • Life Shield wasn’t spawning more fairies with more levels. That has been fixed.
  • Streamer BonfireLol found a way to stack Ethereal Form ontop of itself which completely removed cooldowns. Super fun! Super broken! That bug is now fixed!
  • Combining Boulder Drill with Necromancy, then shooting Seren’s Barrage at it would spawn an incredible amount of minions which could possibly freeze the game. You can still spawn the same amount of minions, I’ve just optimized the game so crashes are less frequent.

Patch Notes v 0.2.1 Necromancy Update

Hey Scholars!

I'm happy to announce the first major update of Scholar of the Arcane Arts! The Necromancy Update adds a new dungeon, seven new enemies and five new spells as well as other minor improvements. So, here we go:

New Dungeon - Catacombs:



A new Gateway has a chance to appear during your run. This will lead you to the Eldritch Domain which contains the new dungeon, Catacombs. Explore a land of death and decay as you attempt to close this Gateway and save your village. But be careful Scholar, the undead will swarm you!

Death Drain:


Drain the health of all monsters near you, while recovering a small amount of hp per monster damaged.

Ethereal Form:


Leave your body in a ghostly form. While Eathreal Form is active all cooldowns on spells are reduced by 50%. At the end of Ethereal Form you will be teleported back to your body. Be careful! Your body can take damage while you’re gone.

Soul Link:


Mark a monster. Soul Links will attach themselves to nearby monsters from the marked monster. Any damage done to the marked monster will also be done to all Soul Linked monsters.

Null Hour:


Sacrifice 50% of your health to deal 50% more damage for a limited amount of time. Afterwards, your damage and health returns to normal.

Absorbing Eye:


Drain the life of nearby monsters into the Absorbing Eye. The Eye will increase in damage and size with each monster drained.

Town Building Update:


This patch will introduce the Town Building aspect of Scholar. This is a very small step towards a much larger feature of the game. You can now collect materials which will be saved between your runs. These materials can be used to improved your home village:

  • Earth Domain - Wood
  • Fire Domain - Star Fragments
  • Water Domain - Clay
  • Eldritch Domain - Carbon

New Town Project:


Cat House


Speak to Altur and he will direct you towards the new Quest Board by the Gateway. Tootsie’s Cat House is a new quest which requires materials that can be mined in the Domains.

Tootsie:


Once you’ve built the cat house Tootsie will appear in the Villa. When you pet Tootsie she heals you to full hp, and she resets all the cooldowns for your spells.

Gameplay Updates:



The game is a little bit too punishing. This patch I’ve reduced damage by 20%. I’ve also cut down the range of some of the enemy’s spells like fireball and ice drill. Please let me know how this feels. Is the challenge toned down too much? Or does this feel better?

If a purple chest will only spawn Power Stones, then that chest will open automatically when you walk near it. If the purple chest spawns additional loot then you will have to hold down F to open it like normal.

Spell combos that temporarily boost your damage now last for the entire Domain. They will be reset when you return to the Villa (examples: Necrotic Orb + pyromancy will boost your damage for necrotic spells if you kill an enemy with it.)

The Earth monster RockShell takes longer to cast Boulder Drill, which will leave them vulnerable for longer.

The domain you last died on can not start a new run. For instance if you die in the Earth Domain your new run’s first Domain can only be the Fire or Water Domain. After completing one of those options the Earth Domain will be added to the random level pool.

The background mountains in the sky castle scroll when you move.

Altur and Vera’s dialogue will change depending on what Domain they’re in.

Spells can no longer deal 0 damage. Even if the monster is highly resistant to it, the spell will deal at least 1 damage.

Both your spellbook and Vera will display the max level of each school of magic. No more guessing or remembering!

Poisoned Test Dummies were showing crazy damage numbers. It’s because the Poison status does % health damage. This has been fixed so the Test Dummies now just state that they have been poisoned.

Ormung spawns 4 lanterns to power up a big attack. Previously the lanterns would do a death animation, and at the end of the animation it would stop powering up Ormung. This felt bad, as you would destroy the lantern but still get hit by the big attack because the animation didn’t finish in time. Now the lanterns stop powering up Ormung the second they have been destroyed.

Bug Fixes:



Screen Resolution Issues:


All the shop windows have been revamped so they can fit all screen resolutions. If a window is not aligned properly on your screen please let me know so I can adjust it in a future patch!

There were some missing texts like “Immune” or “Resists Up”. This has been fixed.

Necrotic Orb properly states how many orbs spawn.

Necrotic Orb would freeze in place if there were no enemies around and it was combined with Necromancy and Geomancy. It now has a timer that will make it explode after some time.

Final Boss can now be poisoned.

Hailsphere was not upgrading its damage, or the Nekra’s Scythes damage that it would create when combined with Necromancy. Now it does!

Riptide now properly states that InstantCast is at level 5.

SummonDeadwoods damage was not correctly calculated when it was set on fire. Once set on fire Deadwood will explode for 10 * Level.

Vera’s Dialogue resets properly when you close and reopen her shop window.

When Boulder Drill combines with Necromancy it spawns a little rock monster for each drill. A decently leveled up Boulder Drill will fire around 30 drills. The intention of this combination was to get about 30 rock monsters on screen, because a player would shoot Boulder Drill through a Necrotic Wall. We had a player who found that combining Mudball spawns about 18 poison puddles which count as necromancy spells. He then shot Boulder Drill through each puddle which created about 540 rock monsters. Seren’s Barrage spawns a flare for each Geomancy spell it touches. Rock monsters count as Geomancy spells. He then shot about 10 Seren Barrages into the 540 rock monsters which created around 5,400 flares. This is really cool. This will break someone’s computer. I had to put a limit to how many rock monsters Boulder Drill can spawn.

New Spells

These spells will be starter spells so you have a high chance of finding them.

Spell Updates



Summon Deadwood:


Update: No longer a starter spell. It has been moved to the Tier 2 loot pool.

To-Nei’s Burst:


This spell will hold you in place for 2 seconds. It doesn’t matter if you’re spawning 5 fireballs, or 500.

Mudball:


You can now combine all the evolutions of Mudball. This will reward Scholars who are combining Mudball efficiently. If done right this has the potential to do huge damage. So we need to tune some things down.
Update:
Cooldown 3 seconds => 5 seconds
Pyromancy Combo 4x Damage => 2x Damage
Geomancy Combo now slows Mudball’s speed by half

Scattershot:


This spell is too good. I don’t want to nerf it too hard because it's super satisfying. But something needs to be done because it’s outshining all the other spells. I’m moving it from the Tier 2 loot pool to Tier 3 so it will be harder to find.
Update: Cooldown 12 seconds => 18 seconds

Seren’s Falling Star:


Update: Cooldown 80 seconds => 50 seconds

Ice drill:


Update Cooldown 8 seconds => 6 seconds


Gaia’s Shield:


Update: Cooldown 25 seconds => 22 seconds

Nera’s Shield:


Update: Cooldown 25 seconds => 22 seconds

Dragon’s Shield:


Update: Cooldown 25 seconds => 22 seconds

Splash:


Splash is severely outperforming even late game spells. Being able to deal ~ 300 damage every 3 seconds is a little crazy for a starter spell. So now Splash can only interact with a school of magic once. Don’t worry, those crazy interactions aren’t gone. The new spell Riptide acts just like the old Splash. The only difference is that Riptide is not available as a starter spell.

Update: Geomancy combination will allow Splash to go through walls

Removed: Geomancy combination spawns mudpatches. Splash could interact with a school of magic multiple times

Spell Combinations



Necromancy is being added to the game! Which means I need to update every spell that can interact with other spells. There are some complicated combinations that I am planning to do with Necromancy combinations, but that will take time. So for now this patch will update the combinations that are a little simpler.
The following spells can now be combined with Necromancy (I've purposely hidden them under a spoiler so you can enjoy finding new combinations):

Spell Availability


Certain spells will only be added to the loot pool after special requirements have been met. Once you’ve performed a task or found a secret that unlocks a spell, Morello will let you know that you’ve successfully completed the special requirement.

The following spells have been removed from the loot pool and must be unlocked:
•Tree of Hope
•Ronin’s Shield
•Seren’s Falling Star


Gameplay Updates



Scholar no longer immediately sprints at the beginning of the level. They will only sprint by pressing Shift.

The Spellbook has been updated with a scrollbar so I can continue to add spell slots without worrying about how much room Morello has.

This allows me to update Scholar with as many spells as I can think of. Who needs sleep when there are spells to craft!

Test dummies now show status effects.

The Spellbook’s top bookmark has also been updated to show every interaction between schools of magic. I rearranged it a bit too, so it should be easier to read.

The first few upgrades into a Spell’s Cast Time will greatly improve the Cast Time. All subsequent upgrades have diminishing returns until you reach Instant Cast. This change allows a player to upgrade a variety of spells once or twice and feel good about it, even if they can’t reach Instant Cast yet.

Bugs Fixed



Vera was incorrectly showing how Boulder Drill’s damage would be upgraded. She now correctly shows how Boulder Drill will deal 50% of Power Level per drill.

Splash’s descriptions are now working.

Deadwood no longer crashes the game when combo’d with fire. It was a literal crash and burn situation. This has been fixed!

Firewall no longer inverts the colors of your minimap.

We had a player who spawned 10 deadwoods. He upgraded the Deadwoods so they would cast Splash. They would shoot 10 Splashes, hit 2 Icewalls which would spawn a total of 90 Splashes, then each of those would hit a Rockwall which would spawn 10 mudpatches each, for a total of 900 mudpatches per attack. Super cool and super unsustainable! I like the mudpatch interaction so I’ll be moving it to a spell that can’t duplicate itself.

Patch 0.1 (Kaliuresis Edition)

Hey Scholars!

The patch for the game came out today. Now it's much easier to travel the worlds of Scholar of the Arcane Arts, there are new spells and changes were made to some of the old ones!



Sprint:


When there are no enemies nearby, you can increase the Scholar’s movement speed by pressing and holding the Shift key so that you can explore the areas with ease! Once an enemy walks into the range you will lose this increased movement speed.

New Spells:


Summon Deadwood - Geomancy
Splash - Hydromancy
(The spawn rate of these spells will be increased so players can test it)

Spell Updates



Reduced the cost of all Defensive spells. Remember to upgrade those walls!

Thornpatch
Update: Combining with Pyromancy damage increase 6x => 3x
Thornpatch was very easy to find but was doing endgame damage when combined with Fire spells. It was the first combo I ever made and probably went overboard with it. This change keeps the other combinations relevant.

Mudball
Mudball used to only spawn mudbirds once. Now Mubdall will spawn mudbirds for every new friendly water spell it hits. But we need to keep mudball in balance with the other spells
Update:
Mudbirds spawned Power Level => 50% Power Level
Mudbirds Damage Power Level => 50% Power Level

Stone of Schmovement
Update: Knocks enemies back and cancels any spells they were casting

Life Shield
Update: Cooldown 60 => 30

Ice patch
Update: Icepatch will be destroyed shortly after interacting with a spell. Previously Icepatch would stay on the ground indefinitely allowing looping combos which would one-shot Ormung. I know he’s a Demigod but that’s rude.

RockThrow/Tar’s Rock
Update: If you combo’d these spells it wouldn’t deal double damage to bubbled and frozen enemies. That’s been changed, it will deal double damage to bubbled and frozen enemies regardless if it was combo’d.

Boulder Drill:
Update Cooldown 15 => 8
Bubbler
Update: Bubbles are now being assigned the appropriate damage and level so they can scale as well as they’re supposed to.

Gameplay Updates:



Golden Chests:
These chests will now always give you the option of 1 spell or 1 orb of power. These chests also have a higher chance of spawning powerful spells. After selecting one of these options you will also receive power stones. Puzzles and Bosses will spawn Golden Chests.

Heart Pendants:
Heart Pendants will permanently increase your maximum health. Each boss will always drop a Heart Pendant to help Scholars deal with the scaling damage that enemies in later stages dish out. Plus I like the way it floats up and down!


Bug Fixes:


Destroying the Final Boss too quickly would keep him in a frozen state. That bug is fixed and his health has been greatly increased.

Fixed an issue where Altur wasn’t stating a spell’s name if it was Instant Cast

Fixed an issue where if a wall was Instant Cast, the indicator wasn’t showing up under the mouse so you could place it correctly

Fixed an issue where you could cast a spell from an empty spell slot and assign a spell’s cooldown to another spell. Players were able to reduce Seren’s Falling Star’s cooldown from 80 seconds to 1.5 seconds and cast it from every spell slot. They could then cast Seren’s Falling Star multiple times, allowing it to absorb damage from itself. This created an infinite loop of scaling damage that would invert onto itself and deal negative infinity damage which would heal all enemies until the end of time. It was very neat, but is no longer in the game.
