Spaceland: Sci-Fi Indie Tactics

Meet the hero: Terra

Terra was enlisted to the Alpha squad as a technical specialist, for she not only has an engineering background, but also remarkable hacking skills. She likes not so much the fact of hacking the computer, as the search for vulnerabilities in well-protected systems. The girl is always driven by the curiosity and the spirit of discovery, which made her a top-notch hacker.

However, these qualities do not always get along with the strict discipline of the elite Alpha squad, in which our engineer serves. The point is that she is not a soldier, and does not have a military education. Terra is irreplaceable when it is necessary to interact with terminals and computers, but she has to rely on covering fire of her comrades in battle. However, Terra hopes that someday her associates will perceive her as a full-fledged squad fighter.

Despite her role as a support and weak defense, Terra can give the enemy what for thanks to her powerful plasma rifle. It is a very accurate and deadly weapon, the main drawback of which is its limited ammunition. Among the other abilities it is impossible not to highlight the first-aid kit, which restores most of the health to injured teammates.

Spaceland on DevGamm

Hi, spacelanders! We have returned from the indie developers conference DevGamm, where we showed the latest version of Spaceland. Many visitors liked the game very much. A lot of excellent feedback was received on how to improve our game. So now we are starting numerous improvements.

On the second day, we gave several interviews, telling about the development and future plans. The main thing was the broadcast made by the cool bloggers Disgusting Men. Together we recalled the old games XCom, Incubation and HoMM2, as well as the come back of theses concepts in modern realities. That is what our studio does in the games Braveland and Spaceland.

We hope you liked the photos from the exhibition. Feel free to like the article. ;) Have a nice day!

Battle missions

Hi, Spacelanders. We mentioned that we are making fast-paced XCOM, but not without tactical diversity. When creating game mechanics, we focus on such old school games as Incubation, Laser Squad, Fallout and others. And this means that various objectives, intricate levels and enemies that can surprise you are waiting for you. We will try to illustrate this with examples of some missions from our tactical strategy.

Mission: Dangerous Bridges

In this mission, a very unusual level is waiting for the player. Its landscape consists of seething X-matter, vaguely reminiscent of lava. A few meters above it a few flimsy bridges are stretched over, which you can move across. But they are so unstable that they support the weight of only one creature, otherwise they collapse directly into the boiling liquid. The sophisticated maneuvers are complicated by mutants, slowly but surely gripping your squad in a vice. You have to constantly decide when to give battle to the enemies and when it is better to retreat.

Mission: Deadly Chase

Monsters are following the trail of your squad, and soon there will be an endless stream of then from the open elevator shafts. If you do not block the entrances in time, they will quickly surround you and simply outnumber you. You are short on people and ammo, time is running out, you need to act exceptionally coordinated and fast. The enemy can’t be allowed to lure your squad into a lengthy battle or it will be the last one and acting separately may be unnecessarily dangerous. Ingenious tactical planning is extremely required.

Mission: Divide and Conquer

During this not simple task you will have to act in two independent groups. The squad must pass through two long adjacent corridors, which are divided into several closed sections. Each separating door requires access to a terminal located in the other corridor. Thus, the life of one group always depends on the right actions of the other. In addition, coordination within each pair of fighters is important. It is necessary to save ammunition and choose who get the next supply, as well as to make decisions about when to use the abilities of the heroes.

Feedback

Feel free to write in comments what kind of other missions you want to see in Spaceland.

Meet the hero: Barret

Hi, Spacelanders! We continue to talk about the key characters of Spaceland. This time it is Barrett's turn. Teammate of Jim, whom we talked about last time.

Barret

Barrett has seen a lot in his lifetime, and knows perfectly what the ranger life tastes like. To save lives, he has to act quickly, regardless of the rules. Because of this, a brave sergeant often gets into unpleasant situations and has many problems with his superiors. He spits on the bureaucratic instructions that make up the staff rats in his offices.

Shotgun: deadly at short range, but almost useless at long distances.

However, those who were able to earn the respect or even the sympathy of Barrett know him as a cheerful and loyal comrade who will never abandon his friends. He grew up on a farm and he is used to difficulties. That makes him not only a hot-tempered and wayward ranger, but also a fierce fighter. The brave sergeant is not afraid to meet the enemy face to face, because this is the perfect chance for him to feed his foes with bullets.

Pistol: secondary weapon with unlimited ammo.

Witty and bully, Barret behaves appropriately, rushing to the barricades headlong. With the help of his faithful shotgun, the sergeant mercilessly gets rid of the enemy at close range. It is also hard to overestimate his ability to throw frag grenades. A successful throw of such a baby can destroy a whole group of enemies. "We act first, then we think about the outcome!" - this is the motto of this fearless ranger.

Special abilities

What other special abilities would suit Barrett best? Feel free to offer your ideas.

Meet the hero: Jim

It's time to talk about the key characters of our story. And today we will tell you about one of the two star pilots who caught the distress signal from an unknown planet. Meet space ranger Jim.

Jim

Jim recently joined the rangers, and he has yet to earn the respect of his associates. He grew up in an educated and wealthy family, so even after joining the services he did not lose his good manners. Jim believes in justice and trustworthiness of the command, and will follow any orders ... If they do not contradict his high ideals.

Assault rifle. Еffective at medium distances, large ammunition. Burst: dense rifle fire, causing increased damage, but spending more ammo.

Since the boy’s youth passed in comfort, surrounded by his father's books, the constitution of the young soldier leaves much to be desired. Jim is thin and does not possess outstanding physical data, but he compensates this with agility and quick reflexes. To the surprise of his colleagues, he is a good shot and has a not bad handle on cold arms, especially one-handed swords. Perhaps, due to the plasma sword fighting lessons, which are mandatory for all the students of private schools.

One-handed sword. Used in melee, causes great damage from behind.

Jim is the perfect scout, relying on his speed in combat. A large reserve of action points allows him to actively maneuver and even engage in the melee with the enemy. He is also able to make medium distance dashes, so, for example, he can strike an enemy from the back and cause additional damage. In ranged combat Jim relies on an assault rifle, which has a large ammunition and the ability to fire bursts.

Ability. Dash

The ability to quickly get close to the enemy or avoid encirclement.

Ability. Mine

A small anti-personnel surprise, invisible to the enemy.

Don't forget to add Spaceland to your wishlist. ;)

Fast-paced XCOM

In April we’ve made the official announcement of our turn-based strategy called Spaceland, the actions of which take place in a futuristic entourage. How much does it differ from our previous creation - the Braveland fantasy trilogy – and what should you expect from our new creation? We will try to answer these questions.

Fast-paced XCOM

While creating the game, we focused on such mastodons like XCOM and Fire Emblem, but at the same time paid attention to modern state of gaming. Nowadays, not everyone wants to get stuck on a difficult mission for an hour or two, that’s why we made our plays last from 5 to 15 minutes. So you’ll get a dynamic tactical gameplay with short but exciting levels, flashy FX and capacious characters speeches. Such fast pace and overall liveliness of the gameplay does not let you get bored, continually supporting your interest.

Braveland storyline development

Tortuga Team followers call our new game “Braveland in space,” but everything is much more interesting! Braveland's original trilogy was a tribute to HOMM series and other hexagonal strategies. Spaceland relies on games such as the classic XCOM, Incubation and Laser Squad. The plot is inspired by the books of the “golden age” of science fiction and futuristic games of the past. Therefore, compared with the fantasy trilogy, our space strategy is significantly deeper. Spaceland diligently develops the plot and interaction between the characters, moving to a new level of narration. Heroes are more complex, with their own sympathies, conflicts and other delights of a close team.

Spaceland gets harder

But it’s not just the setting that distinguishes the lands of the brave adventurers from the space rangers. It is important to understand that Spaceland draws inspiration from the squad turn-based strategies of the past, and therefore has a fair amount of difficulty geting close to the midcore genre, and some missions may even feel hardcore. You may remember Incubation – a wonderful game, were levels sometimes resembled multimove combination of puzzles. Tortuga Team is not going to crush the player with impossible tasks, but tactical skills and inquisitiveness of the mind definitely will not be out of place.

We will continue to share with you details about our new game Spaceland. You could share your opinion with us. Should Spaceland be more hardcore or rather midcore like Braveland?

Spaceland announced!

Hi, Spacelanders!

Tortuga Team are glad to announce our new tactical scifi adventure. The game inspired by XCOM and legendary sci-fi novels. Lead team of space rangers, outsmart alien monsters and discover secrets of uncharted planet.

Some interesting facts:

  • Spaceland is PAID game. No microtransactions
  • Spaceland is more like xcom-blitz. One battle is about 10-15 minutes
  • Someone called our game Braveland in space. Maybe... But we call it XCOM meets Fire Emblem
  • Spaceland is more hardcore than Braveland series

Add Spaceland to wishlist and stay tuned for new tactical sci-fi adventure.
