Splatter

One Year Of Splatter

It's been a year and a week since we launched Splatter.

First, patch notes: To celebrate our release anniversary, we've added developer commentary to some of the game's levels. Check the "commentary" box on the level select screen and you'll hear us talk about things like releasing demos, pitching to publishers, and the secret reason why the weapon charge meters are labeled "testosterone" and "estrogen."

This will probably be our last content update for Splatter. We might have a few devs add more commentary (it's been a pretty busy few weeks, and we weren't able to get everything we wanted recorded in time for the anniversary), but otherwise, the game feels complete and it's time we put the damn thing to bed. Thanks for coming with us on this journey.

Looking Back At 2023

Splatter was, as you all know, an unexpected smash hit, selling dozens of copies and inspiring countless imitators. The cultural phenomenon that is "Splatter" has shown up in a variety of unexpected places this year, and we figured we'd highlight a few of them!

Looking Forward At 2023 Part 2

The team that released Splatter a year ago is now two teams working on separate projects. I'd like to close this out by encouraging you to check out the stuff that both the Catbird team and the Rat King team are doing, because we've both got some pretty neat stuff in the oven.

The Rat King team is currently developing Littlest Pet Shooter, a hybrid FPS / pet sim. You can keep tabs on it via their Twitter or Discord.

Over at Catbird, we're working on a game called Steel Carnelian:

It's a shooter / platformer with robots and tons of bullets, but that uppercut was the coolest clip I could fit into a 5mb gif so it's what I went with. If you want to see more, check out our Twitter, Bluesky, or Discord.

Trading Cards

We're a few days late to the fall sale announcements train, but we brought y'all something to make up for it: DIGITAL COLLECTIBLES. We know how much you guys love to hoard useless pieces of crap, so we added a bunch of that on the Steam side of things. You can get Splatter trading cards! Splatter emotes! Splatter profile backgrounds! You can even get a Splatter badge for being such a good collector!

Go now. Collect cards and experience the emotional fulfillment that only a pile of jpeg files can bring.

new dev/publisher housekeeping

our splatter support channel has moved to a new discord server, so we've made a small update to our in-game contact info. sorry for the download!

The Pride Update

adds five new skin colors to the game

The Hardcore Update

Added a new HARDCORE hack which is available once you have mastered a level.
-Score gain is increased by 10%.
-Enemies learn faster.
-Healing is significantly slower.
-If you are hit while healing, you will stop healing.
-Automatic ammo regen is disabled.
-To regenerate ammo with a weapon, hit an enemy with your other weapon.
-Hitting enemies with a melee attack regenerates 25% ammo.
-Trying to shoot without sufficient ammo damages you.
-Some enemies will have censorship applied to the explicit parts of their body. This does nothing except protect their privacy.

Additional Patch Notes:
-Added a 3D Graphics option in the options menu. This enables Anaglyphic 3D. I don't know how well the 3D effect works because I don't have any glasses for it, but it looks pretty sick.
-Removed Session 17, since nobody found it and clearly that means y'all don't want it enough.
-Added a failsafe to the boss to reset them if they throw a fit and stop moving.
-Fixed some frame stutters in the ending cinematic.
-Fixed hitmarker effects not applying for a variety of weapons.

New Project, New Patreon

Rat King Never Sleeps. Since the release of Splatter, we have been toiling tirelessly on our next Major Project, and now we are ready to Reveal It To You... for the low low price of like $5 a month or something.

Long story short, we got a Patreon, and next week (April 2nd) we'll be doing a little announcement post about our next game there, exclusively for our subscribers. You can join the Patreon here.

If you don't feel like joining the Patreon, just stick around. We'll tell you about the new game eventually, when we get bored enough and want to see your reactions.

Splatter: The "Content" Update

THE CONTENT:
-Added new features, mapped by default to the 1 and 2 buttons on the num row. I'm not telling you what these do. You have to find out for yourself. Feature 2 is disabled in the tutorial.

THE FIXES:
-Somebody reported that enemies sticking to you bug after I swear I got it dealt with, so enemy melee tracking is now a feature you can disable. If the enemies stick to you, disable their melee tracking in the options menu and they will stop. You can also do this if you just want an easier experience, it won't ruin the game or anything.
-Fixed some splatmapping issues.
-Fixed an issue with Session 10's coins causing the level to become impossible.
-Removed one of the two guys from that section in Session 8.
-Fixed an issue that let Goop damage stack to ridiculous levels. Y'all were Gooping too hard and it had to stop.

can't believe i forgot to set this live when i finished it

this patch fixes a bug on certain machines that caused enemies to stick to the player. won't affect most players but if you were the 1 in 300 or so who bought the game and gave up b/c of the bug, please. give it another go

small update

-Fixed a bug where beam weapons (GAZE and VOLT) didn't properly deactivate their projectile when another weapon was equipped.
-Adjusted the death zone in Session 6 so that it actually kills you.
-Adjusted the final area in Session 8 so players can't fall in the central hole. I would have made it do damage, but Session 8 has caused a lot of player frustration and so I felt like a friendlier solution was ideal.
-Fixed several bugs that were causing the boss to freeze permanently.

hotfix

fixed a hard lock in the tutorial.
