Optimizations & Fixes

Hey everyone!

This updates brings a slew of optimizations, some bug fixes and a couple small additions.

Highlights:

  • Greatly optimized the "Square Up!" game mode, which drastically reduced load time. (By approximately 80%, actually!)
  • Fixed a crash in the "Spinner" arena.
  • Fixed a rare crash in the "Basketball" arena.
  • Tweaked some wording in some of the menus.
  • Added a wickedly-cool "witch hat" cosmetic - just for fun!
  • Several internal systems logic additions/changes to account for PC/console differences.
  • Fixed the accidental removal of a couple objects from certain arenas.
  • Optimized achievement logic.
  • Reworked automatic resolution scaling to reduce/eliminate distortion on odd-shaped display sizes.

As always, I hope you all enjoy the update and let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Spring Sale!

The Spring Sale is here! Grab Squarena for less than the price of a cup of coffee, but for WAY more value! I don't know a cup of coffee that can bring hours and hours of fun with a group of friends, do you?

Why am I focused so much on coffee right now?

3rd Anniversary!

Squarena's 3rd Anniversary already! It is still a crazy feeling knowing that people are actually interested in my game. While Squarena may not be wildly popular, people have still purchased, played the game and had great things to say. That is so cool to me, and I appreciate each and every one of you that have Squarena in your library.

Usually I would have a nice content update on anniversary day, but I've been focusing my time working on the PlayStation release (coming very soon!). As it is, I only do game development in my free time and I am only one person, after all.

That being said, if anyone has any suggestions that they've been wanting in the game, feel free to reach out through any of my socials (preferably Discord or Bluesky)and let me know.

Thank you again and remember: Be there AND be square!

November Update

Hello everyone,

This is a smaller update (from the player's perspective), but here are the main changes.

Highlights:

  • Completely updated every Arena preview in the arena select menu to reflect art/design changes.
  • Some minor optimizations on performance and disk usage.
  • Laying more internal groundwork for PS release.
  • Brought the Squarena Demo up to date in relation to game mechanics, physics, and art updates.

I also launched an account on Bluesky if you'd like to come say hi!

Have a great Thanksgiving!

October Update

Hello everyone! This update brings some level fixes, menu functionality fixes/changes, and some new free cosmetics!

Update Highlights

New Cosmetics!

  • Demon Girl

  • Bread

  • Vampire Lady

  • Medusa (Animated)

  • Mushroom Cap

Fixes/Changes

  • Added a mechanic to "Hot Potato" that will spawn more hot potatoes in relation to the amount of active players.
  • Fixed a map boundary issue that, in some arenas, could cause player clipping in certain scenarios.
  • Fixed a rare player input crash.
  • Updated the old system for navigating to/from the tutorial arena. Now that it is part of the level select, I added pause functionality with the ability to return to level select, and removed the option to leave the map using the B/O buttons.
  • Fixed some level object layering issues.

As always, thank you for playing!

August Update

Hello! This update has a few notable quality of life changes, as well as some backend changes, and a new skin!

Hightlights

  • Added a "reconnect controller" prompt if the menu controller gets disconnected during arena select
  • Added some additional contingencies to menu navigation to help mitigate issues caused by controller disconnects
  • Added a "Single player mode" prompt to arena select, if you are currently playing single player to help make it more clear that the level selection is much more limited in single player mode.
  • Removed the "tutorial" button from character select, and instead added the "Tutorial" arena to the standard arena select as the first level. (Players were unintentionally bypassing it before learning the controls)
  • Added the "Pong" animated skin
  • Made some adjustments to obstacles in the "Square Up!" mode.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, thank you!

Summer Sale Update!

Happy Steam Summer Sale! Squarena is at a great low price right now!

This update brings some fixes and additions, mostly centered around PlayStation controller functionality.

Highlights

  • Fixed a bug where the "rematch" button icon wouldn't show up if a PlayStation controller was designated as the menu controller
  • Fixed a slight misalignment in new Squarena logo particle effect
  • Completely reworked controller sync system, so that now it dynamically updates and assigns slots rather than wiping completely and re-assigning. (This could cause issues such as P2 controller connecting and then replacing P1, for example)
  • Created some new sprites for R1,R2,L1,L2 buttons and added them into the interface
  • Created a new controller mapping sprite for PlayStation controllers. Now if the menu controller is a PlayStation controller, it will show this image for the controls in the Help Arena rather than an Xbox gamepad.
  • Edited the current controls sprite to make it easier to read
  • Added the new R1/L1 button sprites to the dynamic portion of the interface when navigating menus and character select

As always, thank you for playing and I look forward to continuing the improvement of Squarena for you!

-Updated the splash screen to reflect the new Codeaclysm Games logo

Hanabi Update

This update brings a few additions as well as several fixes and adjustments mainly from things that were made known from the many games that were played over Memorial Day weekend at Hanabi Con. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and played Squarena!

Update Highlights

  • Added bounce pads to the corners of "Hot Potato", "Soccer" and "Basketball" arenas.
  • Made various obstacle adjustments in "Square Up!" game mode.
  • Created a new "goalie" object to replace the standard moving platforms on the "Soccer" arena.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause vibration to stay enabled if you paused right as it started.
  • Fixed a slight visual overlap in the secret arena.
  • Fixed a bug that made players able to shoot teleport without aiming. (it would just shoot to the right)
  • Fixed a crash that could happen if another player tried to pause the game after someone had already paused.
  • Fixed a bug that wouldn't allow mega shots to add energy to a charging portal.
  • Fixed health setting affecting the size of your character in "Square Up!" game mode.
  • Fixed a bug with setting reverse gravity and playing any of the race modes. The gravity is intentionally unaffected in these modes, but would still reverse jump direction.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause a player to spawn for each controller connected in the tutorial, even if they hadn't joined the lobby.
  • Removed the soccer balls that were embedded into the wall in "Square Up!".
