"When the river runs deep" update is now available!

Developed with the help of selected members of our community, the 3rd major update for Steel Division: Normandy 44 is now available! "When the river runs deep" focuses on enhancing the game experience through several meta changes, it adds a new map variant & new fancy thumbnails for several machine gun units, enhances modding, and greatly improves the game's stability.

This patch focuses on some general unit issues, not on specific divisions. A next update, dedicated to individual divisions' balance, is on the way, and will still be developed with the help of our community.

Note for modders: You will need to generate and upload your mod to make it compatible with this new version.

Here's the changelog:

Meta:

  • Anti aircraft weapons lethality globally increased.
  • Infantry takes much less suppression while moving and can fire on the move with rifles, making assaults and maneuver easier to achieve.
  • Veterancy bonus of unit with 2 and 3 stars toned down. Each level brings a smaller bonus than the previous instead of a constant cumulative value. Accuracy bonus remains +1 per level.
  • Infantry flamethrowers power reduced drastically.
  • Veteran and Elite planes dodge bonus removed.

New map variant:

  • New 1v1 & 2v2/3v3 variant of Odon map.

Upgrades:

  • New thumbnails for several machine gun units.
  • New thumbnails for Carpiquet & Sainte-Mère-Église variants.
  • It is now possible to give attack orders through objective panel in the single player campaigns' missions.

Modding:

  • Improved localization options (maps' name, campaign texts, options).
  • Improved outdated mod detection (avoid to ask for unnecessary update).
  • Added a backup feature for mods. Every upload will now generate a backup.
  • Updated modding manual and added some template helpers.
  • Added a pop-up on the next launch after a crash to disable all mod.
  • Added a less intrusive pop-up for outdated mods.

Fixes:

  • Fixed the display of points scored when destroying enemy units in Destruction mode.
  • Fixed some crashes occurring when changing graphic options.
  • Fixed a crash while canceling a ranked game, what caused a loss of ELO points.
  • Fixed freezes occurring when deactivating some sound devices during a game.
  • Fixed a freeze occurring when launching a Quick Load (F8 key) while there is no quick save available.
  • Fixed some mods compatibility problems after downloading a patch.
  • Fixed a rare crash occurring when watching a replay from an older version of the game.
  • Fixed some disconnection problems in 10v10 games.
  • Fixed a bug when the game did not respond anymore after turning sound on/off with an audio device.
  • Fixed some other rare crashes.
  • Fixed some pathfinding problems.
  • Fixed the display of the AI income in hard and very hard in each phase in the score panel.
  • Fixed the motor sound of the Schwimmwagen and Kubelwagen.
  • Fixed the firing sound of the SdKfz 251/21.
  • Fixed a bug when some infantry units were consuming smoke grenade ammunitions while attacking enemy vehicles with hand grenades at short-range.
  • Fixed a bug when an armored unit could sometimes turn its front armor toward an enemy it did not see.

Let’s have a look in details into the new content of this update:

Odon’s new variant
The new alternative map for Odon is available in 1v1 & 2v2/3v3 in multiplayer and skirmish:

In the 1v1 version, you need to rush to the river, at the center of the map, which acts as a natural front line. With players on each side of the riverbanks, you’ll have to fight tooth and nails to control the three bridges. Do you remember the second mission in the UK campaign? Well, it is the same feeling.

In the 2v2/3v3 version, you’ll be separated from your allies because of the Odon from the beginning of the battle, and requesting support or help from your comrades will be somewhat more difficult than before. Don’t worry, your enemies will feel the same. The use of amphibious units will be crucial.

New Thumbnails
We are proud of Steel Division: Normandy 44’s art style, in particular with the work of our concept artists. For this patch, they created new thumbnails for the map variants but also for infantry units.

Here are a few examples for you:

An allied MG squad waiting for combat…

…and its German counterpart.

Troops capturing one of Carpiquet’s aircraft hangars.

The church of Sainte-Mère-Eglise is in sight!

We’re already working on the next division balance update, and we’re still reading your feedback to improve the game experience.

Next update: When the river runs deep

Next week, we will release a new patch, named When the river runs deep, which will add exclusive content for Steel Division: Normandy 44 and integrate several gameplay changes that we felt appropriate, a work done with the help of players from the community. We hope that you will like these improvements. As usual, we want to give you a glimpse of the innovations that the update will provide, a few days in advance.

In this third major patch, you will be able to play on a new variant of Odon. The map will be available in Skirmish and Multiplayer in both 1v1 and 2v2/3v3 matches.

On this battlefield, the topography will be even more significant. Indeed, the Odon river is at the center of the map in the 1v1 variant, with only three bridges to cross it. This situation should ring a bell for those who have succeeded the second mission of the UK campaign... If you want to play with one or two comrades, be prepared to fight on both sides of the river. Help each other will be a difficult task. As you can guess, the amphibious units will be very useful.

With this patch, all the variants, including Carpiquet and Sainte-Mère-Eglise from The Duellists patch, as well as several infantry units, will receive some new thumbnails.

As our own Madmat already “revealed” this thumbnail on our forums, we had to give you a glimpse of it as well.

On the other hand, we decided to work on a number of adjustments to the meta. Some of the changes were requested by the community like for example rethink the strength of flamethrowers. Nevertheless, we didn’t want to release these modifications without giving some players a try. That’s why we set a testing period in place and invited several players, some of them that you may very well know, to help us improve the balancing. Indeed, we took into account their remarks in real time, and it was a good experience on our side.

It seemed important to us to make a more general balance update before going into the detail of each one of the divisions. Indeed, the update will impact the gameplay and by extent the balance between divisions themselves. We preferred to work step by step, take our time and not rush the balancing. We can assure you that balancing the divisions will come soon.

Finally, the patch will also include bug fixing and solve remaining crashes that players, unfortunately, could experience. We are still very vigilant through our customer support and the forums.

Stay tuned for more information!

"The Duellists" update is now available!

Hello everyone,

The second update for Steel Division: Normandy 44 is now out, bringing new content, awaited improvements as well as some balance changes!

Two maps’ variants

As announced last week, The Duellists update grants players two new variants of the Carpiquet & Sainte-Mère-Eglise maps. They are both available in 1v1 & 2v2/3v3, in multiplayer and skirmish. They will be available in Ranked in the next few days.

Sainte-Mère-Eglise - Duellists
In the 1v1 version of the Sainte-Mère-Eglise - Duellists map, the main road acts as a symbolical frontline instead of leading to the city.

in the 2v2/3v3 version, on the contrary, you will have to share the main road with your allies to reach the town.

In both cases, players will have to reconsider their strategies in order to be victorious.

Carpiquet - Duellists
Both Carpiquet’s variants are more focused on the airfield which now covers a wider part of the map. Players will have to concentrate all their efforts on central open ground.

New 10v10 possibilities

Today’s update gives also access to Carpiquet and Pegasus Bridge in 10v10, promising even more epic battles! All 10v10 engagements can now be fought in two additional modes: Axis vs Axis and Allies vs Allies. Get ready for some fratricidal Panzer fights!

Spanish translation

The Duellists adds one more language to the game. You will have the possibility to enjoy Steel Division: Normandy 44 in Spanish.

Dedicated servers

From now on, each player can host his own dedicated server! To know more about the process, please visit the dedicated page on our website.

General fixes & improvements

The Duellists update also brings some general fixes and improvements. We would like to thank you all for your feedback which have been very useful to improve our game. We are still working to fix remaining bugs that some of you may still encounter.

Next update: The Duellists

The first major update from last week, And Justice for All, was just a warm-up. We are happy to announce that the second major update The Duellists will be released next week, on Wednesday, June 28th! Here’s a little insight into what we’ve been working on.

Our top priority since the release has been to annihilate the remaining bugs that can prevent some players to enjoy Steel Division: Normandy 44 as they should. In the last few weeks, our teams worked relentlessly to solve these issues: our most recent hotfix was released yesterday, fixing several crashes happening when changing some options and a minor glitch in the Replay UI. Please don’t hesitate to contact our support if you encounter any problem!

Besides that, it has always been part of Eugen’s philosophy to be proactive, thinking about new content and exploring new gameplay ideas. We believe that the release isn’t the end of our game but, on the contrary, an occasion to renew your experience.

In the past weeks, we imagined variants of Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Carpiquet maps for multiplayer (both casual and ranked) and single-player (in skirmish), playable in 1v1 (oh, that’s why the patch is named “The Duellists”, I get it) and 2v2. A slight variation changes the whole map dynamics and the way you see and analyze the battlefield.

  • The original Carpiquet map is mostly divided between the airfield and the villages next to it. On the variant, the battle will mostly take place on the landing strip, a wide open-field in the center of the map, to the delight of heavy tank fans!
  • For its part, the traditional Sainte-Mère-Eglise map is quite straight-forward, allowing rushes towards Sainte-Mère through the main road. The new 1v1 variant will offer many ways to reach and defend the city, as the main road will act symbolically as a frontline. In 2v2 and 3v3, you must share the main road with your allies to take the town before the enemies. Beware of traffic jams!

And that’s not all! For those having team spirit, you will also have access to Carpiquet and Pegasus Bridge in 10v10. Even if the disconnection and lag problems have declined further, we are still remaining vigilant and working on additional fixes. Once again, please contact us if anything goes wrong!

As from next Wednesday, you will also have the possibility to host your own dedicated servers for 10v10 games, as many of you have been requesting for a very long time! More info on June 28th!

We also know that playing in your native language is a great comfort, that’s why Steel Division: Normandy 44 was released in German, Russian, French, Chinese & English. “The Duellists” update will add the long-awaited Spanish translation to this list.

Finally, we noticed that our last balance update And Justice for All provoked a wide range of responses. We are aware of what needs to be improved, and that our work isn’t done. Your reactions, combined with a thorough analysis of the game’s statistics help us improving the overall balance. The next patch will bring some changes to complement what was done in the last one.

Thanks for your attention!

Next update: And justice for all

Hello everyone,

We are proud to announce that the first major update for Steel Division: Normandy 44, “And justice for all”, will be released on Wednesday.

Since the game’s release three weeks ago, we’ve been working hard on improving the game experience. While our main focus has always been to make the game technically stable and exterminate the remaining bugs, our game design team have been analyzing the multiplayer games’ statistics and implemented more than 60 balance tweaks on most of the divisions in the game.

Moreover, “And justice for all” will fix a couple of glitches (yes, the Königstiger’s gunner won’t have his hands crossed on his chest anymore) and will bring the very first improvements on the game’s comfort.

As announced during our streaming sessions, we’re working on more free content for Steel Division: Normandy 44, as we did on our previous games. So stay tuned, something big is coming!
