Introducing SBB99

Hi everyone, Matt Nass here, and today I'm going to share some details on a new game mode we've been toying with - SBB99! I'll look at what we've done so far and how our first playtest went, as well as what we're planning on doing next.

What is SBB99

SBB99 is a 100-player version of Storybook Brawl. The rules are largely the same as an 8-player game, except that 100 players are in. SBB99 has a few key differences that made us think it could have potential:

  • 100-player games feel like a more casual environment. There is less pressure to finish near the top when you have so many players in the game.
  • 100-player games are super exciting to watch. Seeing a streamer face busted lineups as they head into the top 10 or top 5 and make a run at the trophy is a great viewer experience.
  • There is something inherently exciting about a 100-player game.

Our First Playtest

After talking to our friendly neighborhood Wrapter, we concluded that SBB99 would also not be too difficult technically! Our queues were already built to scale, and he managed to get an initial version of the feature super fast. We immediately set up a playtest on our external environment which garnered a lot of excitement.

We ran the playtest for a few hours on the weekend and it was a great time. The games ran pretty smoothly, and players got to battle in these monster lobbies. We also learned a lot about what we can improve going forward.

Next Steps

Now we're looking forward to how to bring SBB99 to the live environment. Here are a few key pieces that we need to figure out before bringing SBB99 to live:

Queues

In order to make sure we can fire SBB99 queues quickly and with the right number of players, we are going to make SBB99 into a special event. We will announce the dates ahead of time, and while the SBB99 queue is open, it will replace the 8-player Ranked queue. The SBB99 playtest we ran was a fantastic community event, and we look forward to bringing that same energy to live. Additionally, we will have a backstop so that the queues fire every five minutes regardless of how many players are in, so you won't have to wait too long.

Messaging

Making sure players know what is happening while the event is running is important to us. Here are a few things we're looking at.

  • Changing the "Play" button to "Play SBB99"
  • Having some sort of messaging on the queue screen that makes it clear you're in a 99-player queue. Short-term this is likely to just be messaged in queue tip text.
  • An in-game "players remaining" counter. This is the thing that we most felt was missing during our first playtest and I'm super excited to get it in.
  • We are also going to make sure the queue is unranked, as players were losing or gaining A LOT of points in the playtest, and we want this to have a bit more of a casual feel.

Long Term

While a lot of our focus right now is about getting SBB99 out to players and figuring out what we need for a Version 1.0, we've also begun to think about the long term potential of SBB99. Here are some of the things we're thinking about:

  • Scrollable hero bar so that you can see every single player in the lobby.
  • x/99 players in queue counter for the queue screen.
  • Visual effects on players left counter (eg. Green for 50+, Yellow for 25-50, Red for 25-).
  • If we can get to 100 unique heroes in game, we could just give each player a unique hero.
  • Some form of "Super Crown" that tracks SBB99 wins.

Overall, I'm super excited for the potential of SBB99. Making sure we have a variety of awesome experiences in the game is important to our team, and this is the first of hopefully many to come! For future updates about our SBB99 playtests, be sure to follow our Twitter, join our Discord community and subscribe to our newsletter. Until next time, enjoy playing 100 player lobbies!

The Fates - Hero Guide by PV

Fates was considered a relatively weak hero until her rework, at which point she became one of the strongest heroes in the game. Since she's still quite new, there's a lot of uncertainty as to which level 2 units are good first picks, as well as to how her ability even works. In this article, I'll give you my Tier List of Fates units as well as what I think your strategy should be depending on which one you pick first.

This article was originally published on Storybook Brawl's news site.

Before we go on to the most common Fates strategies, let's make sure we understand how she works. The core of it is that the first unit you buy will get a modifier that says it will be "Destined" to upgrade. What this means is that the unit is going to keep appearing in your shop as a bonus unit until it triples. Here are some nuances of the ability that you might not be aware of:

The "destined" modifier is something that goes on that particular unit, just like a buff. So, if you buy a Polywoggle, then the "Destined" unit isn't "Polywoggles", but that "card" in particular. If that Polywoggle turns into something else, then that "something else" is going to be destined. For example, if Polywoggle turns into The White Stag, you're going to start seeing The White Stags on the shop until that one triples. The same is true if you play Shard of the Ice Queen on your original character (you'll start seeing the Evil character after that).

If you buy Cinderella first, the buff is not going to apply (the next unit you buy will then get the modifier) because Cinderella can't naturally triple.

If you cast Roll the Dice on Turn 1, the unit you get will not be Destined, you have to purchase it for the buff to apply.

If you lock your shop with the Destined unit, you will get another copy of it next turn. This can lead to a scenario where you have more than three copies of the card available for purchase. Some people like a strategy of waiting until you can triple two copies of the unit, but I would not recommend this as I think you sacrifice too much early game.

Overall, Fates is a very flexible hero; most of the time, you're going to use the Destined unit for an early power spike and then from there you will be able to go in whichever direction you want, whether it includes the upgraded unit or not. Some characters will funnel you into certain comps more than others (such as Fanny wanting you to be Dwarves, or Labyrinth Minotaur wanting you to be Evil), but as a general rule Fates does not demand a particular comp the way a hero like Gepetto does. You should also keep in mind that her +3/+3 ability applies to every Gold unit, not just the Destined one, so prioritize getting triples on Fates a little more than you normally would.

That said, here's my Fates tier list:

S Tier - The ones you always want

Blind Mouse

Three Blind Mice is the best unit to start the game with on Fates, because it guarantees a level 4 Treasure very early in the game. If that's what you have, I recommend you to triple them as soon as possible, as some of the level four Treasures (such as Fool's Gold) are more effective the earlier you have them.

When people have Three Blind Mice, it's common to get greedy and try to lock the shop until you get six of them, so you get two level 4 Treasures. I would strongly recommend you don't do that. Not only does it cost a lot to lock these pieces early in the game, but the level 4 Treasures are simply not that strong, especially if they come later in the game. In my opinion, it's much better to get one Level 4 Treasure early than two Level 4 Treasures later.

Polywoggle

Polywoggle is also very strong on Fates. When you have Polywoggle, there are usually two courses of action that you're hoping to achieve:

You immediately Slay. This will turn Polywoggle into a level 3 unit, which will then be destined to upgrade. This means your 2.2 shop will have a level 3 unit in it, which is very convenient in a level you're at 3 gold. A board of two level-3 units will be stronger than almost any other board and you can then snowball that advantage.

You fail to slay (this is the most common scenario). Then, your goal is to make sure that the original Polywoggle does not slay until you can triple it on 3.1. If it Slays, you're going to have to be playing "off-curve" - having a three-cost character to buy when you have four gold is not actually good, you'd often rather buy two two-cost characters instead. In fact, I'd go as far as say that you should not even field your original Polywoggle. You will likely lose the fight, and you might take a lot of damage in the early game (presumably you lost the first round as well), but I think this is a sacrifice you must make. In the meantime, I would also try to pick up Mad Mim if you can.

Note that, if the second Polywoggle you bought ends up slaying something, this is not a disaster; it will delay your tripling, but only the original Polywoggle is Destined, and as long as that one does not transform you will see more Polywoggles.

Then, on 3.1, you triple the Polywoggle. This will give you a 5/5 Polywoggle (because of the Fates bonus) that is very likely to immediately Slay (especially if you picked up an early Mim), and will then turn into an upgraded four cost unit, which is huge. At that point, you will get back in the game and make up for the life you lost during the set-up.

There's always a chance you will triple into a bad unit, of course (for example Time Flies). If that's the case, you will probably bleed for a while longer, but you can still get back in it by finding a True Love's Kiss.

A Tier - I'm very happy to pick those. I'll pick them instead of picking Cinderella or casting Roll the Dice.

Wizard's Familiar

Wizard's Familiar offers a slow start, but it scales well in the middle of the game and it offers a character that you might want to keep until the game is over. The normal play pattern with it is to buy a Familiar on 2.1 and then another Familiar plus a spell on 2.2, though sometimes this is not doable because the spell isn't castable. If you have one of the spells that needs to target a good or an evil unit, I'd recommend you buy an unit of that type and cast that while locking the Familiar; if you have no available units, then you can either buy the Familiar and roll or buy another unit, but in this case locking isn't great because you're left with an uncastable spell.

With Wizard's Familiar, I will sometimes delay tripling by one or two turns so I can buy more familiars - once I'm incentivized to cast as many spells as I can every turn, extra Familiars get a little better. I will still not hold to triple two of them because that takes way too long, but getting an extra Familiar or two can be a cool bonus.

Happy Little Tree

Happy Little Tree is a strong Fates unit for two reasons. First, it's a scaling character, so getting it online early is good, and Fates makes sure you can golden the Tree early. Second, it's a character that benefits a lot from the +3/+3 bonus once it is golden, because it has a lot of health and the +3 attack will end up hitting several characters. A 2/15 Tree might deal 6 damage to enemy units over the course of an early game fight, but a 5/18 tree will deal 15 or 20 and might be able to solo the entire fight.

B Tier - Acceptable. I would lean towards picking Cinderella over them, or casting Roll the Dice in most shops (or Free Roll), but I'm not unhappy to have to pick them.

If I'm playing a tournament and have to spike, then I will try my chances with a new shop, but if all I need is a middle finish or to just avoid getting last place then I will pick one of these units.

Fanny

I believe I like Fanny a little more than others in Fates. This is partially because of Fanny herself, and partially because I seem to like Dwarves more than most people. Right now I admit that Dwarves is not among the strongest end-game comps, but it can be a very strong early-game comp and sometimes you just steamroll the lobby and you never get to the late-game.

I have Fanny in B tier, but whether I will pick her over Cinderella will depend on whether there are other Dwarves in the shop. If my shop is, for example, Fanny, Crafty, Cinderella, I will pick Fanny and lock the shop, because there's already a Dwarf in there and the biggest issue with Fanny is that you might see no early Dwarves. If I have Cinderella, Fanny and Black Cat, then I will just pick Cinderella.

As a Destined unit, Fanny has a couple of things going for her that make her more appealing than you might think at first glance:

Fanny is an early unit that can end up making your late-game comp (you usually only replace her in Dwarves once you get to level six). She can be very useful throughout the game, as opposed to a "stat-bot" that you will end up replacing relatively quickly.

A comp that wants one Fanny is likely to want multiple of them. This makes Fanny a prime unit to "accumulate" in the shop before you golden - in fact, she's the one I am most likely to do this with. You don't need to wait until you triple two Fannies (this takes a long time), but it is often good to not triple her immediately. Two regular Fannies offer a lot of stats if you have other dwarves, so you're not desperate to triple them and stem the bleeding, and I will often wait until I have at least another one available. Once you do, then you can double-support your Doubly with one golden and one regular fanny, which gives you a very big board early on.

Of course, taking Fanny is a bit like putting the blinders on and "forcing" Dwarves, so you lose out on flexibility. Sometimes you see no other Dwarves and then you have to abandon her, and that sucks. Still, I personally think it's worth it to speculate on her. If you are the kind of person who just hates Dwarves, then you should not pick her because she really funnels you into that comp.

Humpy Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty's placement might be the most controversial thing in this article - I think a lot of players don't like him because when he doesn't work out, the experience is really miserable. However, I've found that most of the time he does work out with Fates.

For those who don't know, if you triple Humpty Dumpty, you can choose a Treasure called Easter Egg.

Easter Egg

This scales with your Fates ability, giving upgraded units +6/+6. This is a huge bonus in the early-mid game - it's enough to make it hard for your upgraded Egg to die this early and enough to carry you a long way if you have any other upgraded unit. The +1/+1 bonus at the end of each turn is good as well, of course.

When you select the Egg, I think your first priority should be making sure they don't pop on your second combat. The best way to do this is to buy a different unit on 2.2 and lock the Egg so that you can buy two Eggs on 2.3, but if your shop is bad and you don't think you will win the fight with just one Egg, then I'd consider buying the Egg but just conceding the 2.2 fight.

To evaluate this, you need to pay attention to who you're playing against. Imagine, for example, that your possible board is Tiny + Humpty Dumpty. A hero like Locki can easily kill both these units on 2.2, so at that point I don't think you want to take this risk and it's better to just buy two Eggs and put both on the bench for this fight. A hero like Skip is never going to be able to kill an Egg, so fielding both Eggs on 2.2 is fine.

After you triple your Egg, that should be enough to win you a couple of combats even you don't triple anything else. If your Egg dies very early, then that will be a disaster, but it rarely does, and if it dies in the middle of the game then that's fine, you should have other stuff to replace it with.

Overall, taking Humpty Dumpty on Fates is a risky choice, but I believe it to be better than taking a bad unit.

Kitty Cutpurse

Kitty Cutpurse is a unit that is not going to carry you very far; instead, what it does is facilitate the rest of your comp. As a 5/5 unit on 2.3, it is very likely to slay at least once and potentially more than that (put it in Slot 5 for the highest chance of multiple slays, but early game if your board is strong then that's risky, because the game could end without it ever attacking, so I'd put it on Slot 1). Overall, the Cutpurse should grant you an extra 4-10 gold over the course of the early-mid game, at which point you should feel free to sell it and replace it with a better unit. Holding onto your upgraded Kitty Cutpurse for too long is one of the most common mistakes with this unit, so make sure you do not do that.

C Tier - Also acceptable, but worse than the other units. I will definitely pick Cinderella over those regardless of what the shop looks like or what place I need to finish, and I will always cast a Free Roll.

Sherwood Sureshot

Some people like Sherwood Sureshot as a Fates target a bit more than I do. A 7/5 Ranged unit is very strong in the early game and will be able to solo some fights, but it still doesn't scale well enough by itself for me to be super happy to pick it. That said, I'm not upset either, so it's the first unit in C tier for me. If you manage to find an early King Arthur, you will probably keep this unit in your board for a long time, because then it will actually scale into the later stages of the game.

Crafty

Crafty is also a dwarf, but he does not funnel you into Dwarves the way Fanny does - it's entirely possible to pick Crafty, triple it, never buy another Dwarf and just go on your merry way. So, even if you are a person who will never build a Dwarves comp, you can happily pick him.

A tripled Crafty with Fates will give you an 11/11 early on, and as soon as you find another treasure it will become a 15/15. You should already be incentivized to triple characters on Fates, and having a golden Crafty should make it even more so.

Lonely Prince

Lonely Prince will be a 13/13 when transformed, which is similar to Crafty, but it lacks any scaling so you usually end up selling it sooner. Basically, if it's enough early in the game that you have no extra treasure, an 11/11 is likely to be similar to a 13/13, so the two cards are equal, but if it's late enough that you have found another treasure then you will be in a stage of the game where a 15/15 might be meaningfully bigger than 13/13, so I think Crafty is usually a better choice. On top of that, a 1/1 is much more likely to lose the first fight than a 2/2.

This is not even mentioning the fact that you could end up not transforming this early on, which is a disaster. If you find a Princess in the first shop you can lock it to guarantee transforming your frogs, but if there's a Princess in my first shop I'd rather just take the Princess.

Mad Mim

Mad Mim is a 3/9 with the Fates buff, which is respectable, and the +6/+0 support means it's an unit you will keep for a relatively large portion of the game, as it works very well with Black Cat and can easily enable Slays.

Rainbow Unicorn

Rainbow Unicorn is not a bad Fates unit because, much like Happy Little Tree, the +3/+3 scales very well with large health characters. You will get a 5/13, which can solo a lot of fights early in the game, and giving all the good units 2 health isn't negligible either.

D Tier - Last resort. You're not happy but you'll still buy those rather than paying a gold to roll your first shop.

Baby Dragon

Baby Dragon's upgraded statline is reasonable (9/7), and it should be enough to kill anything in your opponent's backline and survive to also kill an attacker. Depending on the composition of the people you're up against, this can be a huge asset and you'll be very happy to have picked it, but there's a lot of variance in it - if they don't have Supports or don't particularly care about their backline units, then all you're getting is a 9/7 body, which is much worse than the 11/11 or 13/13 body you could be getting with a different unit. I am not a fan of this particular uncertainty so I tend to shy away from the Baby Dragon.

Baby Root

A 3/9 that gives +0/+6 is actually quite decent early on (just buy some high attacking characters to place in front of it, like Tiny), but the shelf life on upgraded Baby Root is much smaller than on upgraded Mad Mim. It doesn't work as well with summons and doesn't enable Slaying, so you'll end up replacing it very quickly.

Golden Chicken

I am not sure which unit is better, Golden Chicken or Billy Gruff. Billy is a 7/9, which is meaningfully better than a 7/7, and it's also Evil and an Animal, which are two bonuses, but Chicken sells for 4 gold, which is much better than selling for 1. I'm not entirely sure picking either is ever correct (it might be better to roll your first shop and skip your first turn), but right now I think I'd pick Chicken over Billy.

B-a-a-d Billy Gruff

Billy is just another "stat-bot", except the stats are much smaller. It'll be a 7/9 when upgraded, which is meaningfully better than a 7/7 but still not even close to the other units you can get with Fates. As the tier says, only pick as a last resort.

E Tier - I will literally pay one gold to roll before picking this unit.

When your shop is truly awful, you can simply roll. If you are lucky you will hit Forbidden Fruit and a good unit, but if you are unlucky you just roll again and lock if you find something great. This basically means you skip a turn, which is suboptimal, but I think it's actually better than buying one of these units.

Labyrinth Minotaur

Labyrinth Minotaur has a big problem in that the stat bonus is not good enough to justify it. When you have a 4/4 character that becomes an 8/8 character, then you expect it to perform better than it was performing before. When you turn a 5/1 character into a 10/2 character, then you don't actually increase its effectiveness very much, especially in the early game; it's still going to kill things in one hit and it will still die in one hit. The Fate bonus makes it a 13/5, which is better, but you'd much rather have something like a 9/9 and honestly even a 7/7 early on, because 7 attack might as well be 13 attack but 7 health is a lot more than 5 health. As a general rule, the +3/+3 bonus goes a much longer way on a unit that is defense-heavy than attack-heavy.

Minotaur is not dreadful to triple because its ability can be quite strong in the right evil board, but I'd still rather try my chances with something else.

Black Cat

Black Cat is one of the rare units that gets worse when you triple it, because the ability doesn't scale linearly. When you play Black Cat, you're not playing it for the body, you're playing it because it gives you an extra unit to buff (with Mad Mim for example). If you turn your two Cats into one Cat, then you will have fewer units to buff overall, and your board will be worse even if your Cat is slightly bigger.

Tiny

Tiny is like Minotaur, except much worse, because it does not have an ability that scales and because a 6/1 body originally is even more likely to be the same as a 15/5 body early on.

So, this covers every Tier 2 unit you can get with Fates and the order I'd pick them in. Of course a lot of this is due to personal preference, and liable to change if the game changes (for example if Dwarves becomes better you will want to pick Crafty and Fanny higher; if Arthur still cost 3, Sureshot and Lonely Prince would be higher, and so on), but hopefully I've managed to give you enough of a direction so you know how to proceed regardless of the unit you end up picking.

I hope you've enjoyed this article, and see you soon!

Patch Notes 70.6

Welcome to the patch notes for Patch 70.6! There are some impactful changes in this patch, though it's on the smaller side. Our plan is to have this be a small balance patch that cuts Trees down to size while making a few more card changes, with a larger content patch coming in the future. We've also got some awesome art changes and feature additions, so be sure to check those out.

New Cards

Water Wraith - Level 3 - Evil Monster - 3/3 - When a character next to me dies, I gain +1/+1 permanently.

Water Wraith adds another positioning puzzle to the mix (I wonder what PV would say about that). If the right characters die, it becomes well-hydrated, leaving the opponent in dire straits.

Cursed Throne - Level 3 - Treasure - Your Royals are also Monsters and have "Slay: +1/+1 permanently."

Your Royals become more powerful, but at the cost of their humanity (those that were human, of course). Cursed Throne opens the door to a Royals/Monsters crossover, and gives more Slay options as well.

Hermes' Magic Beans - Level 4 - 0 cost Spell - You attack first this brawl.

The Magic Beans are useful if you need to guarantee you attack first, and can also just be cast for free to get your spell count up. Spells that vary in value over the course of the game are the most interesting, and this certainly qualifies.

Blaze of Glory - Level 4 - 2 cost Spell - Give a character +10 Attack this brawl.

Lancelot just got another friend, with Blaze of Glory helping win fights, increase Slay odds, and give the lucky few who have Hat-Ball another targeted spell.

Card Changes

All Princes, Princesses, and Queen are now type Royal.

We decided to consolidate all of these types into one, which makes text boxes more efficient and makes more sense flavor-wise (we had some outliers, like Queen of Hearts, who should definitely count for cards that impact Royals, and now does).

Lonely Prince -> When you buy another Royal, I transform into a 5/5 Frog Prince.

As a result of the type update, Lonely Prince no longer needs to find a princess, but any Royal (excluding other copies of himself - that wouldn't make much sense).

Name/Type Changes

Oni King -> Oni Tyrant

Storm King -> Scion of the Storm

Great Pumpkin King -> The Great Pumpkin

Prince Arthur -> King Arthur

Copycat -> Animal Mage

Baba Yaga -> Evil Monster Mage

Bearstein -> Good Animal Mage

Besides the Royals type change, we cleaned up a few different names and types. Prince Arthur got a promotion, and Oni, Pumpkin and Storm Kings got their names changed to something a little less Royal, to avoid that confusion. We also are adding Mage to a few characters that fit the profile, and can't wait to see the Aon/Bearstein mashups.

Grim Soul -> Cut

This is a change we've made before, and once again Grim Soul finds itself on the chopping block. Ultimately, Grim Soul removes more tension and drama from the game than we'd like by guaranteeing Slays rather than making you work for them. It made Slay builds quite consistent, which is counter to the intent of the mechanic, and we are excited to see the landscape without Grim Soul doing its thing. I will note that this leaves Slay as a whole balanced around a card that no longer exists, so we will be taking a good look at all the Slay cards for future balance patches. As a minor note, Trophy Hunter wasn't the driving force behind the Grim Soul change, but we don't mind the hopeless Trophy Hunter endgames showing up less often as a result.

Level 5 and 6 Swaps

Burning Tree -> Level 6, Stats to 4/20

Robin Wood -> Level 5. Text to "At the start of each brawl, give the strongest enemy -7 Attack, and your weakest character +7 Attack."

Three Big Pigs -> Level 5, Stats to 9/9, Text to "Last Breath: Summons three 3/3 Pigs."

I'm bundling these three changes together because they are all part of the same plan. The goal here is to seed the level 5 character pool with more powerful options that don't push you down just one path. That's not to say that Big Pigs or Robin Wood won't end up in Animals/Treants respectively, but buying them on five doesn't pressure you to only end up in those comps.

Additionally, moving Three Big Pigs to five does bolster Animals, which is a comp that needed a little more power. Burning Tree moves up to six to make room (and to avoid the problem of buying Burning Tree on five and feeling forced into Treants), while getting more appropriate stats.

Other Changes

Dubly -> 2/2

Friendly Spirit -> 3/4

Ogre Princess -> 4/2

These are all characters we felt could use a little more oomph, so they've all gotten a boost in stats. Slay away, Ogre Princess.

Cupid -> Evil

Don't let his chubby little face fool you - Cupid is as evil as they come. Making him evil is an upgrade to The Great Pumpkin, as it adds yet another scam option to the pool of evil characters.

Fireball -> 3 damage

Fireball felt like too much of a "must buy" spell in the midgame, and routinely wrecked even strong boards. Moving the damage down to three mitigates that, and makes it more of a decision whether to snap off Fireball when you see it.

Mimic -> Level 6

Mimic is one of the best Treasures when it has the right friends, and led to some of the more unbeatable boards a little too often. Bumping it to six retains the dream of fun combos, though at a much lower frequency.

Singing Sword -> Your front row characters have +15 Attack.

Singing Sword has been the best level six Treasure for quite some time, and was one of the biggest culprits when it came to attack numbers you had no hope of surviving. This change pulls back the power level significantly (especially with Treants), while giving The Great Pumpkin and Animal builds a Treasure they can make good use of.

Embiggening Stone -> Characters in your shop have +10/+10.

Embiggening Stone was by far the least-picked Level Six Treasure, and for good reason - most games, by the time you found it, you were no longer interested in buying low-level characters. This change still makes it a powerful pick when you find it early (via Treasure Map or Hoard Dragon), while giving it utility even later in the game. This has been a fun change, and I can't wait to get to play more with it.

Feature Additions

PVDDR on Positioning

Hello everyone! My name is Paulo Vitor and I'm a 34 year-old gamer from Brazil. I've been a professional Magic: the Gathering player for many years, and I've been a fan of autobattlers since they became mainstream - I played a little Underlords, some HS Battlegrounds and a lot of Teamfight Tactics. I'm also a diehard fan of Disney and fairy tales in general, so when Storybook Brawl came out it was no surprise that I was attracted to it. Since then, it's become my autobattler of choice.

Other than playing games, one of my passions is writing about them. I've written over 700 articles on Magic: the Gathering, and I've also written articles about other games like Hearthstone and Elder Scrolls: Legends. I like writing, and I feel like it forces me to truly understand certain concepts so I can explain them in simple terms.

Up to this point, I didn't really feel like I understood the Storybook Brawl concepts enough to write about them, but right now I feel like I know enough that I can add some value to most players. I'm still not one of the best players, but I am reasonable; I have over 200 hours played, and I'm currently sitting at a 4500 rating, which puts me around 100th in the world. I still have a lot to learn and there are some players who are much better and more consistent than me, but hopefully the knowledge that I do have can kickstart you in your journey to become a better Storybook Brawl player.

With that said, let's start on our first general article - an article on Positioning.

This article was originally published on Storybook Brawl's news site.

One of the most interesting aspects of Storybook Brawl is positioning. It's one spot that can be quite complex, but the complexity isn't paralyzing - in fact, you will probably not even notice the complexity a lot of the time if you are not looking for it. So, if you are an inexperienced gamer or if you just want to relax, it's not going to get in the way of anything, but if you are trying to min/max as much as possible as a hardcore gamer, it will give you an opportunity to outplay your opponents and express your skill. Basically, you can go as deep on it as you want - learning just the basics will be a tremendous help, and once you feel like you've mastered that, you can go over the intricacies of it.

This article will start with the basics and then will talk about some more advanced concepts, but the focus of it will be blind positioning - that is, how you want to position your characters to have the best board you generically can. Once you're late in the game and already have a good idea of what your opponent's board will look like when you play them, you can make radical position changes to target that opponent, but that will be outside the scope of this article.

When people talk about positioning in Storyboook Brawl, they usually number the characters from left to right, top to bottom. I'll be using these numbers in the article as well.

Characters in this game attack in the numbered order, but they will attack a random target in the front line (and a random target in the backline if there's nobody in the front line). So, for example, your 1 character will always be the first character to attack, but it's going to attack your opponent's 1, 2, 3 or 4 character at random.

Knowing this, we can establish some quick, general heuristics:

1) The more on the left a character is, the more likely it is to attack. Consider, for simplicity sake, a board of only 2/2 characters for you and your opponent. Slot 1 will always attack if you go first, and it will attack 3/4ths of the time if your opponent goes first (1/4th of the time it will be killed before it attacks). So it will attack 7/8ths of the time, or 87.5% of the time. A character in Slot 2, however, will only attack 58% of the time. The math will get more complicated if your Slot 1 character can survive attacking or if another character can survive being attacked, but it's enough to know that Slot 1 attacks a lot more than Slot 2.

Because of this, and because it's the easiest slot to pump, slot 1 is the default slot for characters that need to slay once (such as Polywoggle, or Kitty Cutpurse), as well as for ranged characters in the beginning of the game.

Consider, for example, this game from Amaz at the Seasonal Championship.

In this spot, Amaz has a Sherwood Sureshot and a Cinderella. To know how to place these characters, you should ask yourself if they are characters that would rather attack, that would rather be attacked, or if they don't particularly care - once you do that, you can establish sort of a hierarchy in your mind, where the ones that want to attack the most should be as much as possible on the left.

In this scenario, the Sherwood is clearly a character that wants to attack (since it doesn't take any damage when it's attacking), whereas the Cinderella is the same character whether it attacks or is attacked, so it doesn't care. In this case, the Sherwood should go to the left, in slot 1

Because of this placement, Amaz won the fight (the Sherwood attacked the Fanny, which then attacked the Cinderella, and then the Sherwood finished off the opposing Cinderella), and it's easy to see that, had the positioning being reversed, Amaz would have lost the fight instead (the Cinderella would have hit the Fanny who would then kill the Sherwood).

2) A character in 1 is very likely to attack, but it's unlikely to attack a second time, because it's exposed to attacks and you'd have to cycle through your entire board before it dies for it to get a second chance. If you have a character that you want to attack several times, then slot 5 is the best for that character. Usually big ranged characters go here, but occasionally you might have a character that you're hoping slays multiple times (such as Feasting Dragon) that you can put in slot 5.

For example, let's look at this board from Gregbot from the February monthly:

In this spot, putting the big ranged character on 5 is very likely to lead to multiple attacks, especially because the frontline is beefy enough to absorb a lot of the damage.

There are some instances where you might want to put a character that needs to Slay once (such as a Polywoggle) in slot 5 instead of slot 1. If your pump effect pumps the backline (such as The White Stag or Sword of Fire and Ice), then this is where you'd put them, but also if your Slay character is small enough that it has no chance to Slay anything unless it's been damaged. For example, if it's late in the game, a 1/1 Polywoggle will never slay anything if it attacks first, but it could, theoretically, slay something that survived a previous fight with your other characters, so slot 5 is likely the best slot for it.

3) The slot that is least likely to attack and most likely to be attacked is slot 4, since several of your opponent's characters have a chance to attack it before it attacks. This is the most common slot for Rotten Appletree, for example, or for a small Royal when you have Court Wizard, but it can also apply to any character that can absorb a lot of damage while not having a lot of power. In fact, I went through several vods and could not find a person who placed their Appletree in any slot other than 4, though it can be right sometimes.

4) A character that should die before other characters should be placed in the top row as far to the left as possible - for example Good Boy, Monster Book or Juliet. You could also go through several vods without finding a person with a Good Boy in any slot other than 1. With Monster Book this is especially relevant if you have Wizard's Familiar (since you want to pump the Familiar before it dies by casting a spell), but even if you don't have them, you'd rather have a full board if you hit a pump spell from the Monster Book, and it has the chance to snipe opposing backline characters with a spell, so you'd rather it die first.

5) A character that is not Ranged and should survive for a long time (or for the entire combat) should be in the back row, as far to the right as possible, in slot 7. This is the prime spot for Queen of Hearts, Prized Pig, Bearded Vulture and Great Pumpkin King. This is because you'd rather every other character in your board die before that one has the chance to get in combat.

6) In the early game, I've found that it usually pays off to put your strongest characters first. This is because other people are also doing that (either because it's usual or because supports are the best ways to have a strong character to begin with), and you want to avoid a scenario where you end up wasting your attacks.

Consider, for example, a scenario in which you have a 4/4 and a 2/2, and your opponent has two 3/3s. If you put your 2/2 first, it will attack a 3/3 (turning it into a 3/1) and that will then attack your 4/4, which means the 2 damage that you dealt ended up being completely irrelevant. If the positions were reversed, the 4/4 would have killed both 3/3s and the 2/2 would have remained untouched, winning you the fight.

Obviously there are scenarios in which this hurts you (if your opponent has a 4/2, for example), but I've found that, as long as your character can survive one attack from an unbuffed large character (say a Labyrinth Minotaur or a Tiny), it's better to put it in front.

7) Characters that can kill your opponent's supports should try to attack first. Killing a support can be incredibly disruptive, and you'd like to do that as soon as possible. Sometimes, you will also snipe their scaling character (such as Queen of Hearts) before it can grow out of range of your attacks. This includes characters like Baby Dragon and Doombreath, but also characters that have the chance to kill backline cards, like Monster Book and Wretched Mummy.

Now, let's move onto how some individual characters and strategies can affect your positioning.

Some characters require two characters behind them to gain full effectiveness - The White Stag is the most common, but Copycat is another example. In these cases, you're usually left with a choice - you can either put them in slot 1, where they will be the most likely to attack but will be less effective, or slot 2, where they are less likely to attack but will be the most powerful if they do attack. This is going to depend on a lot of things (for example whether you think two buffs are needed to win the fight or whether you think just one is going to be enough), but there are some tricks you can do to make sure you get the best of both worlds.

The most common thing to do is that, if you have less than seven characters, you can leave your first slot blank. This won't give you the same exact percentage as being in slot 1 (since there's now one less character that can be attacked if they go first), but it'll still be better than placing it in slot 2 with something else in slot 1. Alternatively, you can have a zero attack character in slot 1, which would actually give you the same odds of placing it in slot 1 then.

Let's take, for example, this board from the Ssilver at the T8 of the seasonal championship:

Here, he leaves Slot 1 empty and places the Stag in slot 2, guaranteeing that it's more likely to attack than if position 1 was filled.

One turn later, he actually holds a Chicken in hand to make sure his slot 1 can be empty, to maximize the chance the Stag buff goes off on two characters.

There is a counterpoint to this though, and it's that, if you have a character that summons something else on death (such as Black Cat), you should not put it in slot 1 if you want your slot 2 to attack, because the replacement Cat will have priority over it and you'll have to wait yet another round to attack with your Stag.

If you are Royals, there are two things to pay attention to. The first is that Juliet must die before Romeo. This usually means putting Juliet in the front line and Romeo in the back line, but you can do a little bit better than that and put Juliet as far to the left as you can. This way, she can die early in the fight, which means if Romeo somehow dies in the middle of the fight (such as a Doombreath attack) she will have been dead already.

The second thing to pay attention to is Court Wizard, which really wants your Royals to be attacked rather than dying by attacking themselves into big characters. This means you want your attacking royals to survive as much as possible, which means putting your healthiest characters on the left and your most frail characters on the right, where they are most likely to die before attacking, rather than when attacking.

For example, check out this Royals placement from the latest Monthly tournament (unfortunately I don't know who this player is since their name didn't show for some reason):

This is perfect placement, and illustrates both points that I mentioned. The Juliet is as far on the left as possible, so she can die as soon as possible, and the royals in the front line are placed in order of health, as to maximize the number of Court Wizard bonus attacks. Then, the Ranged characters in the back are placed on the left, to make sure they attack as much as possible with their regular attacks, and Romeo is on the right where it's most likely to be attacked before attacking.

Labyrinth Minotaur is a character that usually wants to be after the characters it's pumping (and the same is true for things like Rainbow Unicorn). By the time the Minotaur dies, ideally every other Evil character in your comp (with some exceptions, like Queen of Hearts) has already died as well, so it should usually be put in the backline and as to the right as possible.

This is something that might have trade-offs, but that you should consider doing anyway. The most common scenario that appears early game is alongside Mad Mim, and if you find yourself in this crossroads, then it's important to know which stats matter and which don't. If you have a Mim and a Labyrinth Minotaur, you gain the most total stats by putting the Mim in the back and the Minotaur in the front - even if the minotaur dies, you're getting an 8/1 and a 0/3. In the early game, however, there's almost no difference between an 8/1 and a 5/1 (unless you suspect your opponent to have bought Egg), but there's a real difference between a 0/3 and a 1/3, so it's often better to put the Mim before the Minotaur, even though it results in less total stats. For example, check out this placement from NuclearGoo at the last monthly:

Friendly Spirit wants to be as big as possible, since buffs on it are effectively doubled, so your supports and Treasures are going to dictate its positioning a lot of the time, but assuming all else is equal or relatively flexible, you should try to position the Spirit so that it dies after the characters it doesn't want to pump and before the characters it does want to pump. For example, see this placement by Ssilver in the t8 of the Spring Championship:

Here, the Books are ahead of the Friendly Spirit, because Ssilver wants the books to die first (and they might cast spells that pump the Spirit). If combat goes "in the right order", then the Friendly Spirit will be able to pump a very valuable character. Had the Spirit been in front, it would have had a higher likelihood of pumping Monster Book, which would be much worse than pumping Wretched Mummy or Lady of the Lake.

One thing that people often don't think about is damage to the opponent. When you win a fight, the opponent takes damage equal to your level plus one for each remaining character plus three for each upgraded character. This means that, if all other things are equal, you want the upgraded characters to survive the fight, so your opponents take more damage. You're almost never going to risk losing the fight for this, since the benefit is relatively small, but if it's free, you should pay attention to it.

For example, imagine a scenario where you have an upgraded Blind Mouse (so a 4/4) and also a 4/4 Wizard's Familiar, with no way to cast a spell in combat. In this spot, you should place the Wizard's Familiar ahead of the Blind Mouse (either one row up or to the left of it), because if only one of them is going to survive, you'd rather it be the upgraded one.

Positioning to protect against your opponent

This article so far has been focused on positioning that's actively good for you, but there's also some positioning you can and should do to defend yourself from the most common threats. I would say the most common threats that are relatively easy to play against are:

If the opponents have Baby Dragons, you don't want to give them free reign. Obviously you're never going to know if they have them or not early on, but it often doesn't cost to play around it and put a 2/2 in the back, for example, instead of a 3/3 or a 1/1. This way, if they do have a Baby Dragon, it'll at least be a trade. If you have supports, you might also consider placing 2/2s in the back rather than in front just to give your opponent's Dragon an extra target.

Positioning against Doombreath is also an important thing, and it's important to do it before you've seen the Doombreath - otherwise it's too late. Let's take, for example, this Ssilver board from the t8 of the Spring Championship:

Here Ssilver would like to have his Raged characters in 5 and 6, but the danger of having them both die to either a Doombreath attack or a combination of spells (Fireball + Falling Stars, for example) is greater than the desire to have the Ranged character attack first. These Court Wizards are imperative to his game-plan, and protecting them takes priority over everything.

Fireball is similar - you want to separate your important characters with four or less health if possible - except it comes up even earlier in the game most of the time.

Once he finds a Soltak Ancient, we see him move the Wizards back to their "rightful" slots.

Finally, there's Earthquake, which is a spell that catches a lot of people off-guard. The best way to play around it is usually to make sure your two-health characters aren't in the front line. So, similarly to Baby Dragon, if you have a 2/2 and a 3/3 you usually want the 3/3 in the front and the 2/2 in the back.

That's what I have for you today! Keep in mind that basically every scenario described here is a general heuristic, but there can be reasons to deviate from them depending on what the board looks like, which treasures you have, what your opponent is playing, and so on. Hopefully this article helped you get to a spot where the more trivial positioning decisions can become second nature to you, while offering enough guidelines on the thought process behind the decision that, once you're faced with a hard positioning decision, you will at least have a better idea of what has to be considered.

Our hope here is that those players who compete at a more competitive level be recognized for their achievements and have an opportunity to make Day Two more consistently in SBBMonthlies.

Players with at least 20 Pro Points this year are eligible for Silver status.

Gold Status

What if you are someone who wants to be the best-of-the-best? The Wonder of all Waddles? If that sounds like you, then the Gold status is what you are striving for. Only the few players who achieve consistent top performance throughout the year will have the honor of Gold Status - Take a look - These are the top of your class!

Once eligible for Gold status in the SBB Pro Club, you will be given the top benefits:

  • You will be announced as an SBB Gold Pro Club member
  • You will be featured & highlighted more often on tournament coverage & articles
  • You will earn an even more unique in-game Hero Frame* only for Gold SBB Pro Club Members
  • You will start each #SBBMonthly with an additional +10 points on Day One
  • A gift bag sent to you full of Storybook Brawl swag

Our hope with this level is to truly recognize the best players in the game and reward them for their hard work and dedication.

Players with at least 30 Pro Points this year are eligible for Gold status.

* Note: The Pro Club in-game hero frames are not quite ready, we appreciate your patience while we get those implemented as soon as possible.

How to earn Pro Points

Events that award Pro Points

In order to achieve Pro Club status, you must earn Pro Points throughout the 13 tournaments this year. The events that award Pro Points are:

December SBBMonthly
January SBBMonthly
February SBBMonthly
Spring Championship
April SBBMonthly
May SBBMonthly
June SBBMonthly
Summer Championship
July SBBMonthly
August SBBMonthly
September SBBMonthly
October SBBMonthly
Fall Championship

Note: The November and December SBBMonthlies in 2022 will be part of the 2023 year.

Pro Points from SBBMonthlies

Every month you have the opportunity to earn Pro Points by competing in the SBBMonthly. All you need to do is show up and play Day One in order to earn the first Pro Point, but the better you do each month, the more Pro Points you earn!

Pro Points from Seasonal Championships

While the primary focus of Pro Points is on the SBBMonthlies, we also wanted to reward players for high performances in the hardest events: the Seasonal Championships.

In addition to the Pro Points listed above:

  • Players who Top 8 a Seasonal Championship are awarded Silver status
  • Players who Win a Seasonal Championship are awarded Gold status
  • Players who Win a Seasonal Championship receive one of the community invites for the following Seasonal Championship.

Other Important Information

Leaderboard community invites & Player of the Year

  • The last Seasonal Championship of the year (the Fall Championship in November), will include 8 community invites. Four (4) of those invites will be awarded to the top 4 players on the Pro Points Leaderboard who are not already queued for the Champs or for Worlds
  • At the end of the year we will also announce the Player of the Year - the player who earned the most Pro Points throughout 2022.

What is the timing? How long do my rewards last?

  • The 2022 year lasts from the December Monthly to the World Championship. Pro Points earned during this time will count towards your status for the 2023 year.
  • Once you reach SBB Pro Club status, those benefits apply immediately for the remainder of 2022 and for the entire 2023 year.
  • The last chance to earn Pro Points this year is the November Championship. At the conclusion of that event, all Pro Points will reset to 0 and those with status will keep it for the 2023 season.

What if I just started playing, can I still earn status late in the year?

Yes! We recognize that the game is still in Early Access and that most of what will become the Storybook Brawl playerbase has not even started playing the game yet! If you joined the competitive scene late in the year, don't worry, you still have a chance to earn status by performing well at a Seasonal Championship.

  • Any player who makes Top 8 of a Seasonal Championship earns Silver status immediately
  • Any player who wins a Seasonal Championship earns Gold status immediately

Where can I find my Pro Points / follow my progress?

  • There is a new tab on the official tournament site with the current leaderboard and your Pro Points total
  • We know you love to play with the numbers, so we have also built out a Pro Points calculator which you can use to project your potential future status
  • As the year progresses we will be building out more ways to make it easier to track your status, such as in your Untapped.gg profile!

In conclusion, we are excited to bring you this Pro Club and with it more opportunities for you as a player to earn recognition and benefits for playing Storybook Brawl. As with the game itself, this tournament system is also in Early Access, so we appreciate your patience and understanding as we may need to tweak things over the next year to make sure we are creating the best experience possible for players.

Thanks, and let's go win some lobbies!

2022 Storybook Brawl Roadmap

Hi all, Matt Nass here and I'm going to break down our roadmap for Storybook Brawl. We're not using dates on this roadmap, as things are always in flux, but we've separated our roadmap into three groups, short, medium, and long term. We'll look at some things that are happening soon, some things that we know we want to do, but may be a little later on, and some of our more long term explorations.

Coming Soon

Coming soon, we have an announcement regarding the SBB Pro club, which will allow players to earn benefits based on consistent performance in our tournaments, as well as version 1 of our new profile screen, which will show players stats as well as their match history.

SBB Pro Club

As our Organized Play heats up, we are excited to present the Storybook Brawl Pro Club. This program will reward consistent finishes, and grant bonuses to players who perform well throughout the year.

Cosmetic Select

One of our most anticipated features is the ability to choose which emotes you have access to, and this will let you mix and match from your different heroes.

Mute Emotes

With great power comes great responsibility, and not everyone wields emotes responsibly. As such, we will be giving you the ability to mute emotes.

Profile Screen

Once profile screen launches, you'll be able to see more personalized stats, including your most-winning hero, previous comps, and more.

More Cosmetics

Everyone loves a sweet hero skin, and we've got more coming!

Cards and Balance Patches

The design team is hard at work (or hardly working?) on new cards and a more significant content patch, so keep an eye out for a shakeup on the gameplay front.

On deck

Next, we'll look at introducing our updated board and frames, which you may have already seen our initial concepts for. We'll also look to take our first steps towards mobile, with a beta where a small group of players have access. The Hero Bar on the left will get an update that will give players more information about who they are facing next, like win/lose streak, tribe information, and hero text. Spectator mode will be used both for tournaments, and allow players to spectate other players' games in group lobbies.

Updated Board & Frames

Our art team is hard at work, and we are planning on revamping both the game board and card frames. For a sneak peek of this, check out this article we recently published.

Mobile Launch (Beta)

Being able to play Storybook Brawl on mobile is something we are all looking forward to. With our beta launch, you'll get a shot at assembling your dream comp from your phone.

Seasonal Rewards

While we've got Battle Pass, Quests, and Achievements coming down the road, Seasonal Rewards for how you finish each month is something we are looking at doing sooner. Once these launch, you'll have more to look forward to each month.

Hero Bar Updates

When we say "Hero Bar", we don't mean the local joint where all the heroes hang out (though that does sound cool). This is the bar on the left side during your game, which shows enemy health totals and who you are fighting next, and we are looking to overhaul it for greater clarity and polish.

Spectator Mode

Being able to watch the end of your group games is a great way to kill time if you get eliminated early, and spectator mode is also huge for tournament broadcasts.

Untapped.gg Stats Site

The great folks at Untapped.gg are working hard on their Storybook Brawl stats site, and once it launches it will be a great resource for anyone who enjoys Brawling.

New Card Illustrations

While we can't promise the Trashcan (Turkish Delight) will be safe, we are excited to see new illustrations from the art team.

Down the Road

Long term, we are looking towards a number of features to help players feel progression in ways outside their rank like Quests, Achievements, and Battle Pass. We'll also look to get Storybook Brawl translated in a number of languages so that players all over the world can play. Once we get to a place we're happy with these important features, we'll fully release the game on mobile, and take the game to a public full launch.

First Expansion

The first expansion will be much more than a balance patch, and will definitely change the metagame significantly. We will share more details as we can on this, since it's one of our most exciting future plans.

Character Voice Over

As great as the music is in SBB, the characters have their own stories to share as well. Character VO will continue to flesh out the polish of the game, and make each character that much more memorable.

Battle Pass

A battle pass system is in the works, where you can earn additional rewards for playing. This is one of our most-requested features, and we aim to deliver on it.

Daily Quests

Daily Quests add a lot of fun to each day, and can help give you reasons to step out of your comfort zone while playing.

Achievements

Everyone loves making progress, and achievements give you fun goals to aim for.

Social Features

As we continue to build out the community around SBB, more social features are planned. We are investigating which of these are the most valuable, and will update you as we get closer to them.

Localization

Translating SBB into a bunch of additional languages is important to growing the global audience, and making sure everyone is included.

Advanced Tooltips

Advanced tooltips are part of making gameplay clearer, and will provide more info about different cards and game elements.

Updated UI

Our user interface has plenty of spots where it could improve, and we are tackling them one by one. This is more of a continuous process, as we are always looking for ways to make the game clearer and more streamlined.

VFX Improvements

This is another continuous process, and we will keep adding good visuals to the game as we get them.

Public Launch

Lastly, we've got the public launch, which we are all excited for. This will be the culmination of our improvements to the game, and we look forward to getting there (with your help!).

I hope you enjoyed this look into our plans for the future of Storybook Brawl. Our team is super excited about where the game is headed and think it will only get better from here!

Day 2

  • Starts Sunday at 10am PST / 6p UTC.
  • Players' points reset at the start of Day Two.
  • Six (6) rounds of 8-player pods, following the same structure as Day One.
  • Some players may receive a bye and will be awarded points based on the average of their other five rounds on Day Two (rounded up / better for the player)
  • After the six rounds are complete, the 8 players with the highest points cut to the Top 8 race.

Top 8 Race

  • Players' points reset at the start of the Top 8.
  • The Top 8 is a "race" format over several rounds:

    • After earning 10 points, players become "live" to win the event.
    • The Top 8 continues until a "live" player takes a 1st-place in a match.
    • Once that occurs, they are the winner of the event and the remaining players are sorted by points for standings.

Tiebreakers for Points

  • Highest finish, second highest finish and so on.
  • Day One point total
  • Rank on March ladder

Rules

  • The event is run through the official Storybook Brawl Discord. To participate in this event you must be registered there:

    • Use the !signup "your game name" command in #tournament-signups by the deadline (specified earlier in this announcement) to be eligible to participate.
    • Choose a Day One Flight time after the tournament organizer starts their signups, and follow any associated TO instructions.

  • Lobbies with bugs or issues at or before Hero select will be restarted.
  • Lobbies with bugs or issues (internet disconnects etc.) after that point will play on.
  • All rulings are the right of the tournament organizers.
  • If selected as coverage's featured pod on Day Two, players must stream their screen to Discord if able.
  • Streaming on Twitch or other platforms is allowed for Day One, but streaming with no delay is at your own risk.
  • Streaming on Twitch or other platforms is allowed for Day Two, but must use the same 15-minute delay as coverage.

Coverage

  • Official coverage begins on Day Two.
  • Starts at 10am Pacific Time on April 24.
  • Coverage will be on the Storybook Brawl twitch.

0.69 Patch Notes

Welcome to the patch notes for Patch 69.0! There are some impactful changes in this patch, though it’s on the smaller side. Our plan is to have this be a small balance patch that cuts Trees down to size while making a few more card changes, with a larger content patch coming in the future. We’ve also got some awesome art changes and feature additions, so be sure to check those out.

LSV & Matt Place discuss the new changes

[previewyoutube="oLTr8yoTi0w;full"]

Card Changes

I Speak For the Trees

Treants enjoyed a resurgence these last few patches, mostly thanks to the addition of Burning Tree. Not only did Burning Tree get tons of stats from Ashwood Elm and other attack bonuses, that also made Echowood go off, leading to a ridiculous collection of stats. Treants were a bit too strong as a result, though as far as comps go, Treants is a pretty honest one. Stats, stats, and more stats are what they offer, with Robin Wood being the only ranged one in the bunch. Still, in the interests of shaking things up and balancing things, we are making two changes to Treants in this patch.

Ashwood - 0/15

Ashwood Elm losing five points of health also means it gives five less points of attack to itself and your other trees. That’s a big hit, and it will chip away at the amount of stats Treants ends up with.

Burning Tree - 0/20

Burning Tree is also losing five points of stats, as it goes from 5/20 to 0/20. This not only makes Burning Tree a little weaker anytime you run it, but makes the cost of speculating on Burning Tree higher. At 5/20, it’s almost always right to buy Burning Tree to go along with something like Sporko or Ring of Rage, and immediately have some good board presence. At 0/20, that cost goes up a lot, as a 0/20 to start isn’t the most impressive. The hope is that these changes combined make Treants a solid part of the metagame instead of being at the top of it.

Sheep in Wolf's Clothing - Cut

You can shear a sheep many times, but skin it only once, and that time is now for Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing. This was a disappointing level four character, and a reluctant buy at best for Animal comps. We are retiring it for now, as we go back to the lab and see what this slot can do for us.

Feasting Dragon - 4 cost 5/8

I did say that I’d get Feasting Dragon on the board, and this change certainly won’t hurt. The effect of Feasting Dragon is fun, but at level five it didn’t start buffing the shop fast enough to be worth going for. At level four (with adjusted stats), the dinner bell rings earlier and more often.

Baby Bear - 2/2 -> 4/4 -> 6/6

Animals have needed a little help, and making Baby Bear (and its subsequent family members) a bit larger might make it just right. This isn’t a massive change, but every point counts.

Tweedle - 10/3

Tweedle went from the best level four character to a middling level five character, leaving some room for a little stat buff.

Hi Ho - 3 cost

Hi Ho was feeling a bit clunky at four, and even when in Dwarves wasn’t a must-buy. We are trying it at three gold, which should help Dwarves strike gold a little more often.

Pan's Shadow - 45 HP

Our last change is to Pan’s Shadow, where five extra health will give you the opportunity to take full advantage of the lategame ability.

Art Changes

Thanks to our new 3D Art Lead, Genevieve St-Michel, we’ve got some sweet upgrades to the playmat. Here are the changes she’s made for this patch:
