It’s that time again - we’ve made some sweet updates to Storybook Brawl, and you can read all about them in these patch notes. Royals rise, Dwarves fall, and a few new characters have entered the scene - take a look!
Trash Panda Potion Master Skin
Firstly, we are happy to introduce the Trash Panda Potion Master Hero Skin! Potion Master is one of our favorites, and this skin truly does him justice - there’s even a nice easter egg for those of you who buy XP spells as frequently as we do. Like with Dragon Master Gwen and Morgana of the Rose, this will be available in the store for 200 gems.
Dwarves
Dwarves have been at the top of the heap for a while now, and we’ve decided to take more action here. These three changes aim to cut Dwarves down to size, and reduce how often they show up as lobby-winning comps.
Bossy -> Cut
This change went into effect a few weeks ago as a hotfix, but I wanted to mention it here. Bossy isn’t the biggest piece of the puzzle, but every bit matters, and an early Bossy could be overwhelming. Plus, the Glassdoor reviews of Dwarves who left the company really didn’t help.
Dwarven Forge -> Cut
Dwarven Forge led to too many upgraded Dwarves too early, especially when combined with Tweedle and Lordy. It also exacerbated the damage dealt by Dwarf squads, and was a real menace in the midgame. The good news is that if you liked this effect, check out the new Sky Castle.
Tweedle -> Level 5 8/2
This is the most impactful change, both to Dwarves and to the character pool overall. Tweedle was the strongest level 4 character, and had a warping effect no matter how it was used. As a result of Tweedle’s dominance, it’s getting a promotion to level 5, and a stat bump to go along with it.
Treasures
Sky Castle -> You only need two copies to Upgrade a Prince or Princess.
We liked Dwarven Forge’s effect, even if it was too pushy in Dwarves specifically. Royals have needed a boost for a while now, and Sky Castle offers them a lot more of what they are looking for, especially when you take Arthur and Mihri’s text boxes into account.
Dancing Sword -> Your Evil characters have +1/+1.
Fountain of Youth -> Your Good characters have +1/+1.
These Treasures weren’t the strongest or most interesting, so we are swapping them out for a pair that give you a reason to build towards good or evil comps.
Characters
Oni King -> Level 5 7/7 +7/+7
Oni King didn’t have quite the punch we wanted in lategame comps, so we are moving him down to level five (with some stat adjustments). Monsters are back on the menu, and seeing Oni King sooner and more often definitely will give them some direction.
Gingerbread Knight - new Level 4 Good Prince - 7/7 - +7/+7 if you have 20 or less health.
Gingerbread Knight helps make up for a bad start - if you’ve taken a bunch of early damage, it gives you a huge character at a low level. We wanted to give players more tools to come back, and this textbox is a start.
Burning Tree - new Level 5 Evil Treant - 5/20 - Bonuses to my Attack also add to my Health.
Treants died on the vine a little once Shoulder Faeries stopped working with Echowood, and we wanted to plant some new seeds. Burning Tree is a massive threat if you can buff it, and works perfectly with Ashwood Elm.
Time Flies - Level 5 Animal 3/3 - When one of your characters dies, summon me from your hand.
Time Flies when you’re winning brawls, and this definitely gives you a little extra punch. There are plenty of combos to be found with this one as well, and we will leave those for you to discover.
Feasting Dragon - level 5 12/8 - Slay: For the rest of the game, characters in your shop have +1/+1.
This Dragon is hungry, and given a few feasts can buff your upcoming characters nicely. People had been asking for more Dragons, so here we are, even if it’s eaten a bit too much to fly like some of the other Dragons.
Heroes
Pan's Shadow -> When you reach level 4, level 2 and 3 characters no longer appear in your shop.
Pan’s Shadow was one of the least popular Heroes, so we are trying a different take on it. Instead of making Evil characters cheaper, it now gives you a stronger selection of characters later in the game.
The Fates -> Your Upgraded characters have +3/+3. The first character you buy is destined to Upgrade.
The Fates is another Hero we wanted to give a little love to. The bonus you get is smaller now, but you are guaranteed to upgrade the first character you buy, as it will continue to show up in your shop until you’ve tripled it. Find out what your fate holds the next time you see The Fates, as this change is a big one.
Evella -> Your Evil characters have +1 Attack. They have an additional +1 Attack for each of your Animals that died this brawl.
Evella has bounced around a bit, and this iteration gives her a little more power to start with. She’s a great Hero for Evil comps, and gives you additional value if you go down the Animal route as well.
New Art
We’ve got a bunch of sweet new art pieces to show off as well - the game gets prettier by the day.
New Features
Tutorial
We have implemented our first pass at a tutorial for new players. This should help guide new players through how to play, and even has shopkeeper VO! This is a work in progress and we’ll continue to improve this flow, so don’t hesitate to send feedback our way.
Fail Feedback
Taking illegal actions like trying to buy a character you can’t afford or buying a 2nd spell will trigger a fail feedback message. Some of these also have VO, and we will work towards getting all of them VO.
Attack VFX
We are updating our attack VFX to make ranged attacks more clear and improve the feel of attacks in general. We’ve also added new tech that allows us to add different VFX for larger attacks, so look forward to us iterating more on this.
Screen shake
To emphasize the massive damage some of your characters do we’ve added a screen shake effect. We realize that some players don’t like this effect so you’ll find an option to turn it off in the settings.
Treasure replace UI update
To address feedback of not being able to skip treasures during replacement we’ve reworked the Treasure Replace UI to all be done in one screen.
Roll/Lock key bindings
We are adding key bindings for the roll and lock buttons. Lock is “CTRL” or “L” and Roll is “Space Bar” or “R”. Our plan is to expand on this feature in the future with adding custom bindings.
BUG FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS
More changes to the networking logic to improve stability and have added better error messaging around common errors
Fixed a bug where King Midas would use up Treasure Map or Runes Stones upon getting a second copy of a character
Fixed a bug that if you were Charon or had Coin of Charon along with Trojan Donkey and the character off Donkey’s summon would die first it got the buff.
Fixed a bug where if you faced a player before their health during the vs scene would not update correctly
Fixed a bug where under certain conditions Mimic would not work with Fancy Pants
We updated the timing on Shrivel to occur when damage effects happen
Fixed a bug where a Shriveled Tweedle Dee could summon a Tweedle Dum with 0 health
Fixed a bug where Summoning Portal was counting the creation of spells as summons

Starts Sunday at 10am PST / 6p UTC.
Players' points reset at the start of Day 2.
5 rounds of 8-player pods, following the same structure as Day 1. Some players may have a deferred round to insure limited bots.
After the 5 rounds plus the deferred round are complete, the 8 players with the highest points cut to the Top 8 race.
Top 8 Race
Players' points reset at the start of the Top 8.
The Top 8 is a “race” format over several rounds:
After earning 10 points, players become “live” to win the event.
The Top 8 continues until a “live” player takes a 1st-place in a match.
Once that occurs, they are the winner of the event and the remaining players are sorted by points for standings.
The event is run through the official Storybook Brawl Discord. To participate in this event you must be registered there:
Use the !signup “your game name” command in #tournament-signups by the deadline (specified earlier in this announcement) to be eligible to participate.
Choose a Day 1 Flight time after the tournament organizer starts their signups, and follow any associated TO instructions.
Lobbies with bugs or issues at or before Hero select will be restarted.
Lobbies with bugs or issues (internet disconnects etc.) after that point will play on.
All rulings are the right of the tournament organizers.
If selected as coverage's featured pod on Day 2, players must stream their screen to Discord if able.
Streaming on Twitch or other platforms is allowed for Day 1, but streaming with no delay is at your own risk.
Streaming on Twitch or other platforms is allowed for Day 2, but must use the same 15-minute delay as coverage.
We decided to do a small patch this week, mainly because of Pumpkins run amok - let's take a look at the changes!
Balance Changes
Great Pumpkin King
Old: 2/2 at Level 5 -> New: 10/10 at Level 6
The Pumpking change was an experiment that we knew we may have to pull back on, and that's exactly what we are doing. Pumpkin at five led to too many short games, long fights, and a meta that had a few too many Pumpkins in the finals. As such, the clock has struck midnight, and Great Pumpkin King is back at level 6. This change (and subsequent reversion) is something we anticipate happening given our design philosophy - we'd rather try exciting changes and adjust as needed than never push the envelope, all in search of the best version of Storybook Brawl possible. Plus, it being Halloween for a couple weeks wasn't a disaster by any stretch.
Princess Wight
Old: Dwarves in your shop have +1/+2 -> New: Dwarves in your shop have +1/+1
We like the way the new Princess Wight has been playing, but the stat gain is a little too much. This change keeps the card mechanically the same, but brings the bonus in line with the power level we are looking for. She's still keeping the bench nice and warm for Dwarves, just not quite as effectively.
Monkey's Paw
Old: Your characters have +6/+6 -> New: Your characters have +5/+5
While the Pumpkin change shined a spotlight on Monkey's Paw, the reality is that it was too pushed as is. We are reducing the bonus to +5/+5, which makes it less of a must-pick and opens the door for other treasures to shine.
Hero Changes
Merlin
Old: When you cast a spell, give a random character +2/+1 permanently -> New: When you cast a spell, give a random character +1/+1 permanently
Like Sphinx before him, Merlin has been too dominant for our tastes. As much as we love casting spells (and trust me, it's a LOT), Merlin has too strong an early game without paying much of a cost for it later, as his hero power remains powerful in the right builds. Making the bonus smaller brings Merlin more in line with the rest of the heroes (and if you get HatBall going, you'll still be pretty happy).
Hoard Dragon
Health from 45 to 40
As it turns out, Hoard Dragon didn't really need the help (or the health). The ability to spike powerful treasures ahead of schedule is strong enough that Hoard Dragon has to give back the health it borrowed.
King Midas
Health from 40 to 45
And King Midas will gladly pick up what Hoard Dragon dropped. King Midas is lacking a little punch, so a cushion of five health will help him get his golden army built up.
Networking Issues
We've have been pushing some server hotfixes over the last week that should reduce errors related to being unable to connect to a server.
You can expect additional improvements in a few weeks with the next major client update.
Bug Fixes
Grim Soul's last breath could target a Brave Princess whose Quest had already been completed.
January Top 100 Announcement
Congratulations to the top 100 players in January! All Legend or higher players have been reset to 3000 and are ready to duke it out again in February.
Here at Storybook Brawl, we believe that gaming is more than just the time spent in game, it's also about great communities and giving back whenever we can. With that in mind, the Storybook Brawl team is very proud to announce Storybook Brawl Gives Back! With this initiative, we are committing to doing acts of social good for the community throughout 2022. This may take various shapes and sizes throughout the year, but our hope is that this year we can bring both fantastic gameplay and positive change to our community.
To start things off, we are excited to announce that we will be matching every dollar awarded in this weekend’s January Championship Qualifier to the charity of each player’s choice! Here is how this will work. After the Top 8 players of the tournament are determined on Sunday, each player will choose a charity that they will be playing for. At the end of the tournament, the Top 8 players will all receive their cash prizes, and a matching donation will be made to the charity chosen by that player - the full $2,500!
Thank you to everyone for being part of our growing community and be sure to tune-in to the official broadcast this Sunday at 10am PST at twitch.tv/storybookbrawl
Patch 67.4 Notes
Patch 67.4 Notes
Welcome to Patch 67.4! It seems like just yesterday that we introduced you to some of these heroes, but change is in the air already. In this patch, we have some significant card and hero changes, so buckle up and come take a look!
Hero Changes:
Midas
Old: You just need two copies to Upgrade a character, but you can never find treasures -> New: You only need two copies to Upgrade a character, but they don't give you a treasure.
King Midas may turn everything he touches to gold, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy a quest or two. This new version will now see quest characters in the shop, and can gain treasures by completing those quests.
The Sphinx
Old: Your shop sells an extra spell. Your spells are free the turn you level up. -> New: Your spells are free the turn you level up.
The Sphinx came out the gates a bit stronger than we wanted - the combination of multiple free spells plus a ton of selection was a riddle that wasn't difficult to solve at all. This change keeps the free spell aspect, which can pay off handsomely, but makes it a little trickier for The Sphinx to find all the spells they are looking for.
Card Changes
Good Boy
Old: Last Breath: Give your Good characters my Attack and Health this brawl. -> New: Give your other Good characters my Attack and Health this brawl.
This one simple change (adding the word "other") has big implications. Good Boy was perhaps a little too good, and by only having the Last Breath affect your other characters, it no longer pumps itself via Copy Cat, Trophy Hunter, or Phoenix Feather. This still leaves Good Boy as a powerful finisher for good teams, but makes some of these combinations less oppressive and opens the door for other lategame compositions to flourish.
Friendly Spirit
Old: Last Breath: Give my Attack and Health to one of your characters this brawl. -> New: Last Breath: Give my Attack and Health to one of your other characters this brawl.
Just like the Good Boy change, this now means that Friendly Spirit has to make new friends, and can no longer pump itself via Copy Cat or Trophy Hunter. It still has the potential to deliver a ton of stats, but it won't stack up on itself like one of those cliques that doesn't let anyone else join.
Jormungand
Old: Slay: +20/+20 this brawl. -> New: When another one of your characters triggers a Slay ability, +20/+20 this brawl. Slay: +20/+20 this brawl.
This is a big one. Jorm was one of the most disappointing Level 6 characters, and as the apex predator when it comes to Slay, we wanted to have it play a bigger part in those builds. This new version now rewards you for doing a lot of slaying, and can grow as epic as the card deserves.
Bossy
New: Bossy is back from the dead!
Bossy has returned, and he got promoted. He's now a level 5 character, and has stats and a bonus to match. This gives Dwarves back one of their leaders, and works nicely in conjunction with the Princess Wight change that you can read about next.
Princess Wight
Old: Your Dwarves have +1/+1. -> New: Dwarves in your shop have +1/+2.
Princess Wight gets a big change here - she now buffs Dwarves in your shop, which means that they get a permanent buff if you buy them (much like Fairy Tail). With the return of Bossy, we wanted to try something new for Princess Wight, and this gives Dwarves another angle of attack.
Great Pumpkin King
Old: Level 6, 10/10 -> New: Level 5, 2/2
The Pumpking is now a level 5 character, which means it will be quite a bit easier to put together the evil pumpkin comps. How will you make use of a cheaper Pumpkin King that you see earlier in the game? Note that Great Pumpkin King, like every other character that summons characters, can't summon copies of itself.
Shoulder Faeries
Old: Stat change triggers at start of brawl -> New: Stats update in shop and lock in at the start of brawl.
This change mainly impacts Echowood, as it no longer sees Shoulder Faeries get huge stat bumps at the start of each fight. We liked Shoulder Faeries at five, and rather than bump it to six, we'd prefer to limit the massive stat gain interaction with Echowood (since the combination was proving to be a bit too strong). Note that these stats lock in once the brawl begins, so even if your Good/Evil characters die, the Faeries won't lose stats.
The 9th Book of Merlin
Old: Level 5 treasure -> New: Level 6 treasure
This move is a quality of life move more than just a power level move. When combined with Mimic and a board full of mages, the 9th Book experience isn't one you'd recommend to your local book club. Too many spells flying around is a situation we don't want to happen at the rate it was happening, so the 9th Book is going up a level.
Horn of Olympus and Evil Eye
Old: Level 5 -> New: Level 4
Old: Level 6 -> New: Level 5
Both of these treasures got bumped down a level, as they were both fun but underpowered at their current level. Pushing build-around treasures like these helps open the door for more inventive squads, so sound the horn and get your supports ready!
Fancy Pants
Old: Give the first character you buy each round +2/+2. -> New: Bonus moves to +3/+3.
These pants just weren't fancy enough - we heard your feedback, and made them even fancier. Additional diamond studs in the art didn't quite make it in, but it's on our list.
CUT: Tree of Life CUT: Hidden Cache CUT: Hand of Vekna
These treasures are all being cut in this patch. Tree of Life either did nothing or made a fight completely lopsided, while triggering a ton of animations. Hidden Cache and Hand of Vekna just weren't fun enough to justify their slots, and cutting all three of these opens the door for more fun treasures.
New Art
