Update Jul.09.2023: More pedestrian lines, various fixes!

List of changes

  • Fixed a softlock when trying to skip the splash screen using Esc with loading screens in 'AGGRESSIVE' mode.
  • Fixed a crash related to asking a pedestrian for a shop.
  • Fixed various bugs related to the navigator marker of a freeroaming opponent - the marker is now immediately placed in the correct position, and tracking is more reliable!
  • Minor career file I/O fix.
  • Cleaner Catalog when viewing without a car in the garage.
  • All the recent crowdfunding supporter pedestrian response submissions have been added!
  • Improved memory management again, mainly in relation to first person mode and some camera rail editor features.
  • The game now launches in fullscreen by default again.
  • If fullscreen startup fails on your system, the game is now automatically restarted in the safer windowed mode instead!
With this in place, you will no longer need to delete files to recover from saving unsupported video settings!
The issue will continue to be investigated!

Enjoy, and please let us know of any issues! :)

Update Jun.30.2023: Improved stability, more traffic, less braking!

List of changes

Cars/parts

  • Narrowed rear track of the Axis.
  • Removed an experimental global 50% boost to brake friction;
Though this was more realistic, it greatly diminished the role of brakes as a maintenance item, and reduced reason to upgrade.
  • Having a (non-functional) supercharger attached to a turbocharged inline 4 engine no longer overrides the attributes of the turbo.
  • Added a drive power penalty to turbocharged engines uselessly also operating a supercharger.

Input

  • Added a secondary set of menu navigation binds - bind them to buttons on your controller to converse with pedestrians and racers without reaching for the keyboard!
You can also use them for other menu navigation of course, but you'll still need the mouse and keyboard for many functions!
  • Race Setup now supports adjusting the bet via rebound menu keys, not just clicks and arrow keys - controller users won't need to reach for the mouse/keyboard unless changing the finish line!
  • Added an axis tester function for throttle/brake/steering/clutch to the options menu - you can test how your controller is working, and adjust input filters with a live preview!

Misc

  • Fixed pedestrian talk dialogs sometimes reappearing immediately after exit.
  • Increased traffic density to more closely match that of the original game.
  • Added a "VERY LOW" traffic density level, equivalent to the previous "LOW".
  • Added a gameplay impact warning when applying "OFF" and "VERY LOW" pedestrian density settings.
  • Fixed a crash related to deleting careers.
  • Fixed the main menu background reshaping for different aspect ratios incorrectly.
  • Disassembly error dialogs can now be hidden by clicking anywhere on the screen, not just the dialog itself.
  • New 'black bar filler' backgrounds for Club Info and Congratulation dialogs, featuring different colors for each club.
  • Added recent crowdfunding supporters to the credits.
Reminder: Crowdfunding closes in less than 24 hours! Last chance to get your name and pedestrian response lines in-game!
  • Further improved memory management - please let us know if you still ever get a constant stutter happening exactly every two seconds!
This will also improve stability related to minimizing the game, though there is still chance of this action resulting in the aforementioned stuttering and/or game crashes - please let us know under what in-game conditions you had minimized the game if this happens to you!

Enjoy, and please let us know of any issues! :)

Update Jun.20.2023

The changes have been implemented over the course of several small updates since Jun.19.

List of changes

Hand-holding

  • After start of a new career, the garage side panel is now automatically opened after closing the welcome dialog.
You will have to press Esc or Mouse 4 to toggle it as normal afterwards.
  • Honking near a pedestrian while going too quickly now displays a mid-screen message instructing to slow down.
These instructions stop appearing after you've talked to a few pedestrians, and have other limitations to keep them from being intrusive.

Misc

  • Fixed rare crashes related to pedestrian and racer selection RNG.
  • Fixed a crash related to changing tach font.
  • Removed some leftover debug text in the city.
  • The game now launches in windowed mode by default - this is a temporary solution for avoiding startup issues on some systems, while we figure out the cause.
You are safe to switch to fullscreen mode after launching the game for the first time!

Hope you're enjoying the demo!
Please let us know of any issues! :)

SL1R Demo is available! Full release on July 28th!

Steam Next Fest - Demo available!

Download the demo on the store page!

Demo features

  • Get a taste of progression - make your way up the ranks of the first two racing clubs, unlocking additional cars and more of the city along the way!
  • 8/16 cars in-game, 4 available for purchase;
    FWD, AWD, RWD, high-end FWD.
  • I4 and V6 engines available - bigger ones don't fit in the available cars anyway :)
A twin-turbo V6 has enough power for wheelies, don't worry!
  • No restrictions on use of cheats, nor other console commands!
We understand that some may wish to enjoy the game differently.

Notable limitations / shortcomings of the Demo

  • Reduced moddability - no .java files included, nor the SLRR car conversion tool!
  • Some bugs have yet to be solved;
Most importantly, don't collide with opponents as they're freeroaming the city, or bad things will happen! (Crashing into them during races is fine :)).
Besides this, the game is stable and very playable!
  • Most-recent crowdfunding supporter pedestrian line submissions have yet to be added.
  • The second parts' shop is unfinished - we've been too busy fixing bugs and improving stability to complete it in time - sorry!

Release date - July 28th!

No more delays! No matter what, the game's coming out on this date!

"Q2" has been the promised release window for a while now, and while a release just before the end of June is still doable, some quality would need to be sacrificed to accomplish this;
Therefore, we decided it best take our time, and have a strong launch!

Plans

  • The remaining part shops will be given the same level of care as the first one - no cutting corners!
  • We'll keep eliminating bugs, and continue improving stability as much as we can.
  • We'll be taking feedback & bug reports from the Demo, and the now greatly delayed private Beta!
  • Any spare time will be used to add Steam achievements!

Crowdfunding closes on June 30th!

See if you're interested in any of the rewards described here:

Huge thanks to everyone who chipped in already, to make this REVision Edition possible!
We'll make it from here :)

Enjoy the Demo, and stay tuned! :)

Weekly progress update #66: Zed's Glasses!

In short

More fixes, continued shop work, improved stability!

List of changes

  • Fixed cheated-on parts becoming unremovable.
  • Moved an Axis taillight very slightly to the right.
  • Added missing glass to Zed's headlights! Thanks to g13ba for contributing this!
  • Increased durability of the V8 superchargers.

Misc

  • Continued work on the second shop.
  • Babyproofed some console commands.
  • Added a top secret cheat (shhhhh!).
  • Renamed the "Difficulty" setting to "Damage", and renamed the max setting to "Amplified", better communicating what this setting actually does, and further implying the max setting to not be the intended way to play.
  • Fixed some issues with keeping out-of-sight freeroaming opponents on the navigator.
  • Fixed a way for the same opponent to still spawn repeatedly.
  • Fixed music loop mode not working (as mentioned before, you can choose between random or looped playback in the settings).
  • Fixed a case of career saves not showing up in the menu.
  • Fixed decal count text not clearing when switching painter mode.
  • Without a car in the garage, you are no longer told to go to the dealer to buy a new car, if you just arrived from there.
  • Improved memory management - reduced memory usage, greatly improved stability under high-stress conditions, slightly improved performance.
We will continue improving on this front!

Another announcement is imminent! :)

Weekly progress update #64: Lights on!

In short

First shop finally complete, misc part improvements, start on credits!

List of changes

Car/part contributions from g13ba

  • Modelled red/white/blue glow objects for police light bars, replacing the flares taken from SLRR, now better matching SL1's visual style.
  • Fixed centering of the police light bar texture.
  • Fixed paintability of Furrano ram air intakes.
  • Replaced wrong texture of Yotta mirrors 3.

Part shops

  • Added a second set of custom bodywork for all category 1 cars to the first shop.
  • Custom mirrors are now also available.
  • Shop lighting now comes from actual light source positions, rather than from a static direction - major improvement to visual quality, and no more overly-dark parts!
  • More part rearrangement in the first shop, which took up the vast majority of the time this week.
  • First shop is finally complete, ultimately featuring 212 buyable parts!
  • Fixed a walk-through wall.
  • We learned a lot about good & bad shelving decisions while doing this first shop - others WILL be finished faster! :D

Misc

  • Fixed a case of clicks not being accepted in the garage, related to changing to/from painter mode using hotkeys.
  • Started work on the credits.
  • Arrow keys can be used to adjust scroll speed of the credits.
  • Credits auto-exit on completion, rather than looping.

Weekly progress update #63: Shopping in the Dark!

In short

More parts at shops, night mode improvements!

List of changes

Part shops

  • Exhaust pipes and dark taillights of all cars have been set up to show up at shops - you will find ones compatible with your current car upon visit.
  • All 14-17" wheels (except Detroit) are now available at the first shop.
  • One full body kit (bumpers, skirts, hood, wing) for each of the four category 1 cars is now offered at the first shop.
  • Bodywork items to display are NOT dynamically selected - you will see parts meant for a variety of cars all at once!
You will be given a warning before the confirmation dialog when attempting to purchase bodywork meant for a different car.
  • Paintable parts which appear at shops are given a random color.
  • Color is auto-matched for related parts.
  • Reorganized positions of most parts found at the first shop, to make space for wheels and bodywork.

Parts

  • Dark taillights are no longer available in the catalog - visit shops for them instead!
  • Reasonable pricing for all dark taillights.
  • Added a 11500 RPM limiter module (only for filling a blank space in the catalog :D).

Night mode

  • Fixed a conflict with a weather setting, leading to broken lighting.
  • Simplified headlight flares.
  • Rarer police.
  • Opponents can be found and raced, but bets can not be made, and results won't affect ranking nor prestige - a challenge on quiet streets is not considered serious by Valo's racers.
  • You get to choose the race route regardless of current prestige.

To great surprise to everyone, the plans for the shops got a lot more ambitious once work actually began, so as has been the case for almost every feature so far, it will take longer to complete than originally expected.
Still, this is the last major feature, and we should just about be able to get the game released before the end of June!

Weekly progress update #62: Shelving Edition!

In short

Shelving!

List of changes

Part shops

  • Added mipmaps to shop textures which most-obviously needed them;
Removed shimmering, slightly improved performance & load times!
  • Completely reshelved the first shop;
  • Intuitive locations for all parts, placed in build order if applicable.
  • Removed broken positions, no more floating parts.
  • All springs, shocks and swaybars are now available at the shop.
  • A total of 127 parts / positions have been set up, a few more for this shop are coming next week!
  • Later shops will be filled more quickly!

Misc

  • Fixed paintability of Whisper ram air intakes and Kurumma doors - thanks to g13ba for contributing these!
  • Pedestrian blabber won't be shown if there isn't enough resolution to display it all (relevant at low resolutions like 800x600). This is a temporary solution!
  • Fixed all spring types appearing to be of the same length when not attached to a car.

Empty shelves are to be filled later! :)

Weekly progress update #61: Shop Marathon!

In short

Part shop fundamentals in place, misc career improvements.

List of changes

Street racing / career mode

  • It is now possible to finish races on foot - useful in case you wreck right at the end :D
  • Slightly restyled racer talk dialog, consistent with other similar dialogs.
  • Added a hidden option (can be set via console command), to skip racer talk dialogs and get straight to Race Setup - response lines for refusal to race are then displayed as messages in the middle of the screen.
  • Added a 0.1s delay after the opponent challenges the player before showing Race Setup, to allow the opponent's honk to be briefly heard, avoiding potential confusion.
  • Endgame: To make acquisition of low-end cars less inconvenient, primary (most-common) category of cars found at the dealer is now based on which garage you enter the dealer from.

Part shops

  • To ease aiming at small parts, first person mode crosshair does not auto-hide here.
  • Infinite first person mode hover/click reach.
  • Consistently with first person mode everywhere else, part names and prices are now shown in the middle of the screen, instead of under the STREET LEGAL logo;
Name of the current shop is shown instead there.
  • Working logic for buyable parts!
  • Since cursor position is untouched by SL1R's first person mode, parts can be quickly bought via double-click.
  • Optional interior fogging applies to shops too now.
  • Player hull cannot be placed outside of shop walls (relevant when exiting photo mode).
  • Proper entry positions for all shops.
  • SL1-matched dynamic lighting.
  • Dynamic shadows are disabled in shops - too many problems keep them from looking good.
  • Proper entry/exit logic, saving your terrible parking position, just like the original game did.

Misc

  • Fixed some bugs with photo mode, related to changing maps.
  • Changed default FPS limit to 250.
  • First person mode in garage now shows the STREET LEGAL logo whenever the cash display is visible (any dialog open or Esc recently pressed), for visual consistency with part shops.
