Sunless Sea
A first look at Zubmariner
Hello delicious friends!
We’re working on our first piece of DLC for Sunless Sea, Zubmariner. We're now ready to share some glimpses of the world beneath the Unterzee. We’re a bit giddy. Hold our clammy hand, would you?
The Thalatte is an exposed-looking collection of wattled and shining organs, like a half-completed vivisection, with a fanged orifice at the front. This orifice applies a force which draws your Zubmarine towards it. The Thalatte can move rapidly, ram, and expectorate gobbets of vile fluid.
Lights in the darkness
Your Zubmarine’s prow light can’t match the oppressive darkness. Things lurk outside of its beam. Some of them are glowing. Some of them aren’t.
These screenshots are early ideas of how the seabed will look, and the kinds of things you might encounter:
We hope this taste has whetted your appetite! Please tell us what you think in the comments. What are you looking forward to? What would you like to know more about? Wait - what was that, overhead?
Your friends,
Failbetter Games
P.S. The Gamers Edition print of Demeaux’s Navigational Chart of the Known Unterzee has sold out (there are still a few Mrs Plenty's Rubbery Lumps left)!
If there’s enough demand we’re hoping to get another run done by Christmas. There will be regular news about any reprints on twitter @failbettergames.
Hairless Adviser! The Neath's most adorable nation needs your wisdom once again!
Guide the feuding rats and cavies of Pigmote Isle to independence. Sabotage their ambitions for your own benefit. Help them flourish, or pick through the ruins of their doomed dream. London will never believe a b____dy word of it anyway.
This free story continues your adventures on Pigmote!
To begin the new arc in an ongoing game, simply return to Pigmote Isle while Something Awaits You. If your current captain has been exiled, you will need to return with a new captain. In a new game, this story continues directly on from the island's foundation.
The Pirate Poet and the Merciless Modiste
The Pirate Poet and Merciless Modiste are now ready for you to meet!
The Pirate Poet is an exclusive character for Kickstarter backers at the Corsair level and higher, though all brave Captains can recruit the Modiste if they dare. We’ll be in touch via Kickstarter if you’re due to encounter the Pirate Poet! UPDATE to the UPDATE: Backers! The Pirate Poet code is now working. Enjoy!
This backer-exclusive content will be made available for purchase, further down the line.
Fixes and additions
This update also expands the amount of files modders can alter, introduces a new Account Management page and contains a few bug fixes.
Modding Constants
You can now include the 'Constants' folder as part of your mod, allowing you to adjust properties like ship speed and engine power.
Account Management
Players will now be able to:
View any Condiments they have. Condiments are tasty accompaniments to Sunless Sea (found in Fallen London, or as DLC in future)
Get new stories manually
Authenticate their account manually, if there are no new stories
Switch accounts
Bug fixes
We've fixed or added the following:
Issue with the 'Edit Keybindings' page which caused the scroll bar to stop functioning.
Legacy bug which allowed players to choose Officers or Weapons they no longer possessed.
Repairing issue which would cause the player ship to become stuck in the 'Repair' state.
Corvette enemy ship added to the game (for Kickstarter Backers this ship will be captained by the Pirate Poet)
Vote for Sunless Sea!
We're chuffed that Sunless Sea has been nominated for Best Storytelling in the Golden Joysticks and Best 2D Visual Experience and Community Choice in the 2015 Unity Awards!
We know these voting things can be a hassle. If you do manage to vote for us, please know that we're very grateful you took the time. It means a lot!

Startup and connection issues: FIXED!
Sorry, all - we know that as of yesterday, a lot of new purchasers are seeing issues with a grey screen on startup. As of today, everyone is now seeing a 'Can't Connect' message for the Get New Stories button - which is a bigger problem, because Get New Stories was a workaround for the first issue.
We put out a patch yesterday, and also did some server migration work yesterday / today - this has caused two separate issues which are colliding in a nasty way.
We are working to fix this right now. Really sorry for the trouble. We're happy for you to request refunds from Steam in the meantime (even if you repurchase the game later).
Modding made easier!
It is now much easier to mod Sunless Sea!
We've added a new directory called 'addon' to your game, which will give you a safe place to store modded files where they will not be overwritten by game updates.
Today's changes will also enable us to add DLC to Sunless Sea (beyond new stories). It's our first step toward preparing the core game for Zubmariner's arrival.
You'll hear news of a release date for Zubmariner here first!
The zee, the zee! It rises, black-fisted, and falls on you with all its weight.
Today's Sunless Sea patch unlocks a few new slivers of story:
The Alarming Scholar will now correctly provide gifts to highly Antiquarian captains.
Kingeater Castle can now move you elsewhere, for a price.
The Venturer's Executor can now complete certain deals in the event of the Venturer's departure.
The Wretched Mog can be unleashed on hapless Rat Corsairs.
Various minor bugfixes.
Enjoy!
Welcome new captains | New content!
Hello, and welcome to new captains!
Many of you have joined us from the Steam Summer Sale - happy zailing!
NEW CONTENT
A snippet of cannibal-centric content reveals a little more about the Chapel of Lights, the Smiling Priest's faith, and where all those candles come from. It raises as many questions as it answers; and it doesn't end well.
DISCUSS SUNLESS SEA
Outside of the forums here on Steam, you can find more Sunless Sea communities:
You’ll know Fallen London as the browser game which spawned Sunless Sea, and the whole universe of the Neath.
Fallen London now contains over 1.2 million words of stories - five times as much content as Sunless Sea - described by Rock, Paper, Shotgun as 'the best words in all of gaming'.
And now, we’re bringing it to iOS.
We've been working on this in the background for many months, and will continue working on it alongside Zubmariner, the forthcoming Sunless Sea expansion.
We’re excited to have a behemoth of the industry acting as design consultant: Jason Kapalka, creator of Bejeweled and co-founder of Popcap, who is a big fan of Fallen London.
We're developing for iOS first, and we're hopeful that Android will follow if the iOS version is a success.
Like the browser experience, the app will be free to play, using in-app purchases for premium stories, more actions and other perks. It will sync with players’ existing Fallen London characters, and support offline play.
Meanwhile, if you want to whet your appetite for undersea adventure, there’s a whole bunch of Zubmariner concept art on art director Paul Arendt’s tumblr...

Soundtrack out now!
Welcome, new captains who’ve found us via the Steam sale!
SUNLESS SEA SOUNDTRACK IS OUT NOW!
21 pieces guaranteed to inspire haunting dreams, wistful reveries for captains lost, and sea-sickness. Each track has been remastered especially for this release and many are extended from the versions you hear in-game.
"In the heart of the wood there was a ring of bones, standing in the earth like dry saplings. In the heart of the ring there was an egg, the size of a coach, the colour of a bruise. In the egg there was a voice..."
Glory's Bones, an additional quest that reveals more of the Chelonate's past, is now available.
ZUBMARINER
Zubmariner will be the first piece of DLC for Sunless Sea. Art director Paul Arendt is exploring the depths of the Unterzee in his pre-production work on his tumblr.

Zubmariner concept art!
Zubmariner will be our first piece of DLC for Sunless Sea. It was funded as part of the Kickstarter, and anyone who backed us or bought Sunless Sea in Early Access will receive it for FREE.
Here's the original Kickstarter pitch:
"This stretch goal adds submarines, or more correctly, zubmarines. We’ll peel away the surface layer of the Unterzee and let you manoeuvre and explore in the depths. It’s darker down here, but the rewards can be great. Of course, you’ve just exchanged the more familiar perils of the surface for the misbred, pale-skinned, bulging-eyed vileness of the sea-floor…"
Our art director Paul Arendt has just released the first two pieces of Zubmariner concept art on Tumblr!
