Sunset

New screenshots

We have added some more screenshots to the store page. They reveal a little bit how narrative is shared and activities are done in Sunset.

Not everything is completely done yet. So these are still work-in-progress. But we're getting there.

Let us know what you think. These are the last moments in which we can respond to any concerns or requests.

Release date!

Sunset will be released on 21 May.
This is also the day when the story starts in the game: 21 May 1972.

Really looking forward to having you play it and hearing what you think!

Meanwhile here's an interview about Sunset and part 1 of a story about the story in Sunset.

Reflections of a Housekeeper, by Angela Burnes, week 27

Sometimes I'm afraid of being alone, of living a life disconnected from other people. But it's through my connection to others that I get hurt over and again. I guess it's the paradox we face as social animals.

I've never met Gabriel Ortega in the flesh, so strictly speaking it shouldn't make a difference whether he's in town or not. Yet somehow I'm still happy that he's returned. It's strange, but now I feel less lonely, in this large apartment on my own.

Reflections of a Housekeeper, by Angela Burnes, week 26

So little separates us from oblivion. If the electricity fails, we're blind and cut off from the other cities around us. If we're traveling during winter and the car breaks down, we'll freeze to death. If the world heats up or cools down even a bit, edging toward the other planets in our own solar system, we're all extinct.

We are so fragile.

It makes no sense to eye each other like starving dogs, fighting over scraps. Even if we come out on top, what's really gained by hurting one another? All it means is that we have to struggle for all our lives, always watching our backs.

The cosmos is endless, cold, and uncaring. On the only world where we know there's life, for vast distances in all directions, we're huddled together in all that darkness, and it seems the best we can do is beat and kill each other.

Come playtest Sunset in Belgium!

We're playtesting Sunset this week in our home studio in Ghent, Belgium. If you can make it here, and you don't mind spoilers, please email sunset at tale-of-tales dot com.

We want to observe how you play a development build of the game so we can learn where the design needs to be tweaked. This is an essential part of the process of making Sunset enjoyable for many. The test should only take 15 minutes to half an hour. And you get to meet our cats!

Reflections of a Housekeeper, by Angela Burnes, week 25

A day of peace! It's been rough on the streets in San Bavón these past few weeks. There are checkpoints everywhere in the city. Everyone's on edge. The regime is determined to wipe out any resistance ("terrorists"). So people have to wait in line to be searched on their way to work or to the market. There are traffic jams everywhere. Men shouting, dogs barking, and even the occasional gunshot. It's all terrifying.

But today is quiet. I got here quickly without being stopped. People on the streets seemed less agitated, almost normal. Maybe we can all breathe easier now, and this is only the beginning of a new chapter in Anchuria. Can Gabriel come home? Could I leave if I wanted to? Ah, hope, you treacherous friend.

A taste of Tales?

If you haven't played our games before and you'd like to get a taste of our style, there's a cheap bundle of Steam Keys available now at http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/zen-bundle/

Development log

We are currently working super-hard on Sunset. Every day, all day long. It's going really well and is a lot of fun. But it doesn't give us much time to look around on the internet or talk to people.

We are trying share some of what's happening in our attic studio in Ghent, Belgium on the indie game development forum of TigSource. So if you're interested in the more practical side of the creation of Sunset (and a behind the scenes screenshot now and then), please follow things here: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=39393

Pre-order available!

As of now, you can pre-order Sunset from our website: tale-of-tales.com/Sunset. Pre-ordering gives you a Steam key on launch day, at a discount, and also a non-DRM version of the game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
