Development Digest October 7th - 14th

Spooky Friday, friends!

As we get closer to Witch's Eve, we get the question over and over of "are all the previous seasonal items going to be available again this year?" The answer is YES! Any weapon, furniture item, food, recipe, outfit, etc. that has been available the past two years WILL be available again. So if you missed out on anything, you still have a chance to grab it. There will also be NEW items available this year. It's a two week event, so plan your time! (Reminder: Witch's Eve is October 19th through November 2nd)

In other news, we've been working on some quality of life bug fixes and improvements along with Witch's Eve. One improvement is with watering cans. Now when you upgrade their quality, they can water a bigger radius. So all of you that upgraded your watering can just for fun, now have a purpose!

Another improvement was made to our Grimwick battle. Not only did the requirements for redoing the fight after defeating him change (reduction in resources greatly), but we've added a lootable chest after defeating him, similar to how our Frostfall Golem works.

Louis has been working away at making controller support more friendly. He's changed up quite a bit and it's getting to a better configuration to start with. This is still being worked on, so I don't have too many details yet.

Last notable improvement for the week is looking into a better way to split stacks that is move intuitive. While we've also been adding more tutorial cards, we want to try to make systems that make sense. Splitting stacks is a quest we get asked often, so we're looking into what we can do.

We're excited to announce our new partnership with Ping Perfect.

To end today's digest, I wanted to let you all know about this month's community event! We'll be hanging out on Discord playing the Witch's Eve update on Sunday, October 23rd at 11am PST. I'm excited to get all the decor and decorate my house for Witch's Eve. See you all there!

Development Digest October 3rd - 7th

Happy Friday, friends!

We're back on our regular Friday development digests, but not for long! We're approaching our holiday events, which are limited events to get all your holiday items.

This year's Witch's Eve Festival will run from October 19th through November 2nd. That's two weeks of fun! The team has been working on a few quality of life updates for the Witch's Eve event and we have quite a few more quality of life updates in the works.

Here's our updated roadmap:

In December I will announce when Frostfall will be available. Expect two weeks of fun there as well.

I hope you all have been enjoying the Windless Woods! We're super excited to jump into Bone Reach after the holiday season and get another zone out. After working with all of the trees, the baron land will be a nice change. As always, we've been listening and reading all of your comments and feedback and using it to make the game better. Some of these do take longer than others, so we can't do everything at once, but that is why we wanted to focus on quality of life updates during this holiday season.

Short and sweet update! See you next Friday!

-Janna

Update 1.5.2

Windless Woods Patch 1.5.2

Hey everyone! We planned to have a small patch to address Windless Woods update bugs on the 26th, but we ended up doing an emergency patch to address big issues earlier. And with the big things mostly out of the way, we wanted to spend a bit of extra time working out a lot of the other, smaller bugs with this update.

We heard you guys weren't happy with healing with the new magic system and we wanted to course correct as much as possible without compromising our vision for the new magic system.

The new magic system fixes a few major issues with the old system. One of these was the absolute cheese tactic of healing yourself over and over to level your life skill. Adding a magic resource fixed that, but we ran out of time to get all the cool healing spells we would have liked into the update, and we definitely failed at balancing the ONE tome we did get in.

This update addresses that by introducing two new healing spells and balances all the spell tomes way better. I think I speak for the entire dev team when I say that we're way happy with the new balance and I have a feeling many of you are going to be switching to a mage build here soon.

To go along with the new spells we also added a new feature for casters that lets you attack quickly with your basic ranged attack and hold your attack button to begin charging your spell. This feel so fluid and fun to use that we just had to rush it out in an update for you.

Thank you for all your feedback! Enjoy the update and the patch notes:

Windless Woods Update 1.5

Welcome to the Windless Woods update!

We're beyond excited to share this new zone with everyone. There are so many new mechanics and features that went into this zone. First and foremost: a complete revamp of our magic system. It still needs some tweaks, but it feels great to be a magic user now.

With this update, any staff or wand that you had will be converted to the new staff or wand in your inventory automatically. One staff and one wand will convert to their new counterparts plus a tome that you would have gotten by doing that quest originally. There is no need to go back on a new character to get these. A secondary point to the staff/wand change, if you have these items in your collections, please remove them and re-add them to their new spot in the collections. We will be removing the old items out of your collections in the coming months so if you do not convert them now, when they are removed from collections you will no longer have access to that old item.

With this update we're also releasing dedicated servers! This means you can have an always-up server hosted wherever you like for you and your friends to join. To get your hands on these you can get them from the Tools section of your Steam library. If you need help with dedicated servers we've opened a new forum channel in our Discord channel just for this. Here's the link: discord.gg/kindredgames

And without further ado, here's those patch notes you've been waiting for! Thanks for all your patience and support throughout this update. It's a big one!

Development Digest September 9th - September 16th

Happy Friday, friends!

We're less than a week away from this huge update! We've got a lot of bug fixing in the works and still more to do. Before I dive into that, I wanted to talk about our community play session that happened last weekend.

We had so many people jump in and out and play. We got these awesome group photos of when we had the most people in game. I almost finished up my outfit collections, but I at least know what I'm missing now. Weapons are a whole different story. I was also able to get some quests done that I hadn't gotten to yet and the community helped each other finish their goals as well. It was such a fun event and I'm so excited for our next one after this update. It's September 24th at 11am PST. All details are on our discord. Hope to see you all there!

Other exciting news: we launched our Supporter Pack DLC page with purchases available October 6th. This is a purely cosmetic DLC that helps support the development of the game as we navigate our way through Early Access.

Let's talk about this week now. Even after the game not building because one file was different so it took three people to figure out how to get the game to build so we could keep testing even though that file that was changed wasn't working after changing it back to when it was, we were still able to power on. I also had the unfortunate disaster of our source control wanting me to redownload the whole project, but simultaneously upload the whole thing too. Source control is great, except when it's not. We made it over all those dumb hurdles and were able to put our amazing dedicated testers to work.

When I tell you that our dedicated testers are amazing, I really mean it. They are continuously testing multiple things over and over. Making sure drop rates are working as intended, repeating quests to make sure different ways to do them all work, double checking us to make sure all the new items are actually available in game, and so much more. There's a lot and we've been giving them tons to do this last week and this whole next week.

The team has been on bug fixing duty all week and will continue to knock everything out to deliver a smooth update. Of course, there's bound to be things we missed and we'll patch them up after the update. This zone is adding a tremendous amount of content.

While we all work on bug fixing, we gotta still have some fun.

I'd share some bug pictures, but all the ones I found have crazy spoilers in them! Either the tester is wearing a secret weapon, they have a secret quest tracking on their screen, the area is secret, there's just so much. I did find one picture of a camera issue. Some NPC's randomly have their cameras spawn in weird places, so here's that:

You might be able to see some new stuff in there.

That's it for this week. There will not be a development digest next week as the update is on Thursday. Depending on when the patches follow, there may not be one the week after. That means the next development digest could most likely start talking about Witches Eve! See you in the update!
