The Elder Scrolls: Legends

The Legends Team is Expanding!

We’re thrilled to announce new members of our developer team at Sparkypants Studios working on The Elder Scrolls: Legends. Three fantastic new additions are joining the card design team, joining Josh Utter-Leyton and Peter Janaros to make sure upcoming card content for Legends is not only balanced, but also interesting and impactful!

The first of our three additions, Ryan Siegel-Stechler, will be working on-site with Sparkypants in Baltimore, MD. An experienced card game player, he began playing CCGs nearly two decades ago with the Pokemon TCG, later switching to Magic: The Gathering in the early 2000s.

In addition to playing card games, he also scored a 5th place finish in Magic’s third Great Designer Search - an event which he says gave him a push to start looking into card design full-time. That effort seems to have paid off and now he’ll be bringing that design expertise to Legends.

“I’m definitely excited to get to work with the design team at Sparkypants. I’ve found the gameplay to be deep and strategically rewarding; my wife and I have spent more than a couple nights staying up late playing Arenas side-by-side!” says Ryan. “My goal is to contribute some awesome mechanics, flavorful additions from the super-rich Elder Scrolls mythos and make some sweet individual cards for players to tell each other stories about topdecking.”

Our second new designer is Jason Hager! Does that name sound familiar? It should! Known online as TDCJason, Hager has been a long-time force in Legends’ competitive scene with several high ladder finishes and a top four finish in the most prestigious event in Legends’ history: the Masters Series at QuakeCon 2018. Hager has also seen success in Magic: The Gathering and VS System, where he took home a $24,000 second place prize in the Pro Circuit. Throughout his time playing Legends, Jason has been known as one of the game’s premier innovators and an expert pilot of unconventional strategies - experience he’s sure to put to good use as a card designer.

“The TESL design team is full of driven and talented folks, and I'm humbled to be included. I hope to bring my love of TESL, quirky deckbuilding, and persistence to the design table, says Jason. “I'm sure there will be tough and exciting challenges ahead, but at the moment I feel giddy and honored -- a bit like I'm touring Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.”

Finally, we’re pleased to welcome a household name in the CCG world: Brazil’s Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa! PV is a prolific Magic: The Gathering player and writer who began his career in the early 2000s. A Hall-of-Famer like Utter-Leyton, he also has become the highest-earning player in Magic’s history with almost $500,000 in lifetime winnings. PV has taken his skills to Legends before, finishing high on the Ranked ladder as early as 2016 and competing in the Masters Series qualifiers this past Summer.

“I’ve been a card games player for most of my life, but this is my first time actually working as a designer, and I’m very excited to start,” says PV. “My first contact with Legends was when it was still in closed beta, when I visited my friends who worked on it, and I immediately fell in love with the game - the lanes mechanic was fascinating to me, and I thought it had the perfect mix of being challenging and skill-intensive while not being overly complicated. Since then, I’ve played a lot of ladder, I’ve participated in competitions, and I’ve even written a couple of articles on it, and now I look forward to helping make Legends the best game it can be as part of the design team.”

Jason started at Sparkypants last week, while Paulo will begin towards the end of November with Ryan joining the team in early December. Together with Josh and Peter, we’re confident in their ability to expand upon Legends’ history of awesome card design in the many expansions to come.

October 2018 Monthly Card: Altmer Dragonknight!

This month, we’re thrilled to bring back monthly reward cards!

These all-new, exclusive cards come along once a month and are tied to your performance in the Ranked play mode. If you achieve rank nine or higher, you’ll earn one copy; rank five will give you the second, and you’ll earn a whole playset of the card if you’re able to make it to the elite ranks of rank one or Legend.

October’s card is the first monthly reward coming from the Mage class: Altmer Dragonknight!

Altmer Dragonknight is a card with a lot of potential - but it will take the right deck-building skills to unlock it. Though the card starts out with modest 3/2 stats, it will grow by +2/+2 at the end of any turn in which you play in Action. This means if you’re able to keep Altmer Dragonknight alive long enough, it could truly become a force to be reckoned with!

Altmer Dragonknight will be at its best in decks with a lot of Actions. Fortunately, the Mage class is known for its powerful Actions, so you’ll have no problem finding cards to pair your Dragonknights with. Cards like Lightning Bolt and Piercing Javelin will help you clear a path for your Dragonknight to attack while cheaper Actions such as Lesser Ward and Scouting Patrol can make sure it starts gaining power and health the turn you summon it.

No matter how you decide to utilize Altmer Dragonknight, be sure to head into the Ranked ladder today to secure your copies!

We’re thrilled to announce that The Elder Scrolls: Legends’ refresh date is nearly upon us!

The long-awaited update to the brand new Sparkypants Studios version of Legends is set to arrive Tuesday, September 25. We appreciate the community’s patience in the months leading up to this transition and assure you that every available moment was spent making sure the new version of Legends lives up to your expectations.

As Sparkypants rebuilt Legends from the ground up with all-new code, the magnitude of this update is immense. While we’re confident you’re going to love the final product, our goal is always transparency. To that end, we’re tracking a list of known issues that we plan to address (see the FAQ below) in the first post-refresh patch, and we’re under no illusion that additional snags or issues may arise when the new product is live. If you experience any of the issues outlined below – don’t panic! We’re already on the case and we’ll update the community constantly along the way.

Be sure to follow our official Twitter account for updates. We will update everyone when Legends is back online and encourage everyone to jump in and play at that time! There will be a continuing effort to update and improve the game moving forward, and we greatly appreciate your feedback.

Want to see the newest version of Legends in action before it goes live? Tune into our official Twitch channel this Friday, September 21 at 4pm EST as we show off what’s in store for players next week!

    Update FAQs:

Q: What’s included in this rebuilt version of Legends?

A: The entire client has been rebuilt from scratch. For players this means a new user interface, new gameboard, new and improved animations, increased gameplay speed, revamped card frames, new premium card animation and an improved tutorial experience.

For our players on mobile devices, this version also includes a significantly leaner mobile client. In addition to these changes, the update also allows us to deliver updates and changes faster than we’ve ever been able to. This is just the start for Legends!

Q: Will there be any downtime for this transition?

A: Yes. As this is the largest update in Legends’ history, we are estimating a longer-than-usual downtime window of 24 hours for this update starting Monday, September 24 at 12:00pm ET.

During this time, players will be unable to access the game. If anything should cause a change to this estimation, we will update our players via our social channels.

Q: Will I have to download a new client to play Legends?

A: No, but you will have to download an update, just like with our patches in the past.

Q: Will the gameplay be different when the game comes back?

A: No! The gameplay of Legends is remaining identical; this transition focuses on the game’s look and feel, as well as client optimizations that will allow us to add a lot of awesome new features to the game moving forward.

Q: Is all my progress going to be wiped?

A: No! This refresh will not affect your account progress, achievements or collection in any way. Everything you’ve earned or purchased before the refresh will still be yours in the new version of Legends.

Q: What about my progress in Ranked for the month of September?

A: When Legends comes back up, you will be at the same spot you were at the start of the downtime on September 24. The Ranked season will conclude at the end of the month as usual

Q: Will there be any new features when the game is back up?

A: You will notice that Tournament Mode will be in the Play menu, but that feature is unavailable at this time. We look forward to adding this mode (and many other new features) in the future. However, just about everything else - such as the card frames and the game board - will look completely different!

Q: Are any cards being added or changed alongside this update?

A: This update will not be adding any new cards or changing any existing cards.

Q: How will the extended downtime affect daily login rewards?

A: All accounts will be set to the further possible rewards progress for that month when the game comes back online. This allows players the chance to continue earning – or even catch up on – daily login rewards for the remainder of the month.

Q: Where can I find a list of known issues?

A: We will be monitoring the release for any known issues, which will be detailed here.

Legends Community Update and a Message from Sparkypants

For the past month and a half, we have been blown away by the community’s enthusiasm for Legends. Sparkypants has been hard at work on the game and a complete client and backend refresh. We see your messages and posts and we want to give you an update on where we are in the process.

As you can imagine, Sparkypants is in the middle of a huge undertaking. They are rebuilding Legends from the ground up with brand new code – while allowing you to keep your progress and achievements. While the cards and gameplay will remain identical, this effort will improve the look and feel of Legends while building a thinner client that is easier to update and improve with long-requested community features.

While we are all incredibly excited about what’s next for Legends, a project of this magnitude takes time. We’re committed to releasing a polished game that keeps all the same functionality and feel – and this means giving Sparkypants the time they need to get it right.

We are also in the middle of the first season of The Elder Scrolls: Legends Masters Series, with the grand finals coming up on August 9-10 at QuakeCon. Releasing a brand-new app now could potentially affect the integrity of Legends’ most prestigious tournament. For these reasons and more, we are not ready to release yet, and it will take more time.

For more information about the future of Legends, mark your calendars for the keynote address at QuakeCon and don’t forget to tune in to the competition, where we will witness some of the highest-level competitive gameplay ever!

We appreciate your patience during this transition. In the meantime, we’ve invited Sparkypants to give you a bit more visibility into the development work going into the refresh. Sparkypants’ Lead Producer, Andrew Auseon, has taken time to put together more information on the game. Take it away, Andrew:

Andrew: Thanks, Christian. You expressed it perfectly: blown away. That’s how we feel about the response to recent hands-on showings of the game at E3 and ongoing discussion in the forums and online. It makes all the hard work worth it. No joke. Before going any further, I’d like to say a resounding thank you from everyone at Sparkypants for the continued enthusiasm, goodwill, and patience as we forge ahead on this amazing game.

So, onto our first big announcement, which concerns the Legends design team. We at Sparkypants are thrilled to be bringing MTG Hall of Famer and card designer extraordinaire Josh Utter-Leyton on board as a key member of our growing design team. As many players know, Josh has been with Legends game since its earliest days and played an important role in what it’s become. With Josh on the team we’re very confident that we can deliver great cards and collections into the future.

Speaking of new content, we’re finishing a new Story expansion that will explore another fascinating region in the Elder Scrolls universe; in addition, we’re designing a new thematic set of standalone cards that will add some interesting new wrinkles to the game’s meta and get players trying new deck compositions. Our focus is on designing “big” cards that will see a lot of play. This will be Sparky’s first foray into designing original cards for Legends, but we have experts like Josh to guide us, and as always, we’ll be eager for feedback.

We continue our push forward on the refresh, redesigning the look to fit within the new art style, making user experience tweaks and fixing issues as they come up. We’re especially pleased with some newly created menus and layouts for mobile UI, which should make navigating and playing the game on the go much easier. We’ve also shortened the player tutorial to get new players into matches sooner. A lot of fans are interested in dates for console SKUs of the game, but unfortunately those won’t be part of the relaunch, so we can’t talk about those quite yet.

Moving forward, the Sparkypants team wants to continue building a strong connection with the Legends community. We plan to incorporate a release calendar in our regular updates and share new features in their early stages with influencers, garnering feedback to address what’s best for the game and its players. Tournaments will be the first of these new features, and we can’t wait to roll them out later in the year. Everyone here is excited for what’s to come!
