Update 45 Preview—Base Game Improvements

Check out the base game improvements coming with Update 45, including visually refreshed starter zones!

The release of Update 45 on live servers is coming soon, occurring March 10 for PC/Mac and March 26 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. When it hits, players can enjoy a variety of improvements to the base game experience. There’ll be something for everyone, from new players just stepping into Tamriel to ESO veterans with an abundance of Champion Points. Check out some of the highlights below.

A Fresh Start for Starter Zones

As part of the ongoing commitment to keeping ESO as modern and welcoming to players as possible, several zones have received a visual refresh to bring them up to more recent standards.

“Moving from the updates to the Wailing Prison in Update 44, the five starter zones represented the very next step in the new player experience,” explains Art Manager Morgan Godat. “Because these zones are smaller, we were able to bundle up the changes and release them together to make sure that all new players would have a first open zone experience closer in visual quality to our newly released zones, regardless of their choices in character creation.”

Compare updated starter zones

These zones—Bleakrock Isle, Bal Foyen, Stros M’kai, Betnikh, and Khenarthi’s Roost—have all received visual improvements and now benefit from the team’s long experience.

“The changes are primarily a cosmetic facelift for many assets in the world, using newer parts and tricks we’ve learned over the years since the initial game launch. Things like ground and water textures, grasses and flowers, lighting, and some small prop replacements,” says Principal World Builder Greg Barley. “Certain locations have updated structures, such as the docks or shipwrecks on Khenarthi’s Roost, for example.”

Saddle Up for Quality-of-Life Changes

In addition to the starter zone refresh, this base-game patch also includes a host of changes and improvements to the overall experience.

Improved Base Mount Speed

Mounts now start out noticeably faster than they did previously, while still ending up around the same final speed for most. If you fully invest in all possible mount speed improvements, you may even end up going slightly faster than before.

"Unlocking a mount is a big moment early in your adventuring career, and it should feel good,” explains Senior Systems Designer Cullen Lee.

Get galloping and get going!

However, Lee notes that it hasn’t always been the case.

“Prior to Update 45, it was easy to 'sprint away' from your first mount experience feeling faster than the mount itself. With the changes in place, you'll find that mounts feel significantly more useful early in your journey, while keeping them feeling the same at the top end."

Craft Champion Point Improvements

If you’ve reached level 50, you’ll notice some changes to the way the Craft constellation works.

"In Update 45, the first thing you'll notice about the Craft, or green, tree is that you probably have some empty slots available now,” says Lee. “We've taken most of the stars that were a chore to remember to slot and made them always active. This means that once you unlock a star like Meticulous Disassembly or Plentiful Harvest, you'll never have to worry about forgetting to swap your stars around and missing out on rewards ever again!”

With these changes, the team hopes to make some previously overlooked stars more appealing.

“With so many previously slotted stars changed to always active, you'll also find that some stars that you might have passed over in the past are more exciting, since they are no longer competing against some of the best stars for slots."

Tamriel Map Cleanup and Messaging

Update 45 also includes an effort from the UI team to make the continent map of Tamriel clearer and more usable. Clutter has been reduced, and zone names now appear on the map as you zoom in.

"I think the changes to the Tamriel level of the map will get noticed pretty quickly,” says Lead UI Designer Bobby Weir. “Previously, discovered wayshrines could fill up the map to the point of making it difficult to navigate. We've changed it to only show one wayshrine per zone at that higher level, so hopefully it won't feel like you're fighting with the map anymore when trying to use it."

Disguise Items Added to Collectibles

Many quests that featured a player disguise now grant that disguise as a permanent collectible among their completion rewards—no inventory space required! A large number of the available disguises have been converted for Update 45, and you’ll unlock the new collectibles on your first post-patch login with any character who has completed a relevant quest.

Mundus Stone Boon Visibility

The power granted by a Mundus Stone is a crucial element of many character builds, so we have taken steps to better convey its value to new players. There is now a reminder about Mundus Stones among the Level 10 Level Up Rewards, clearer and more direct information in the Mundus Stone Help Entry, and a section for Mundus Stone Boons in the Character and Inventory UI screens.

Enjoy more Mundus Stone help

Additionally, the Mundus Stone Boon area of these screens now turns red if you reach level 20 without an active Boon to remind you to acquire one.

These are just some of the many changes and additions coming to ESO with Update 45. You can experience it all for yourself when the patch arrives on March 10 for PC/Mac and March 26 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Are you excited for the base-game improvements coming to Tamriel? Mayhem Spreads Across Tamriel

The Whitestrake’s Mayhem in-game event makes its grand return Thursday, February 20 at 10AM EST, and will run until March 4 at 10AM EST. During this period, all players will enjoy a 100% boost to Alliance Point, XP in PvP zones, and Tel Var Stone gains as well as unique in-game rewards by competing in ESO’s various PvP modes.

Eager to clash with your fellow players as they fight for riches and glory? Simply follow these steps below:
  1. Head over to the in-game Crown Store to receive the “Details on the Whitestrake’s Mayhem" quest
  2. Visit your Alliance War faction's main gate in Cyrodiil using the Alliance War menu or a Battlegrounds camp outside major cities
  • Please note that you are not required to travel to Cyrodiil to kick off this event
  • Locate the NPC “Predicant Maera" to continue the quest
    • If you already completed this quest during a previous event, you won't need to do it again
  • Lastly, complete the quest to receive a complimentary Pelinal’s Boon Box

  • Test your might before Predicant Maera.

Don’t forget, the Scroll of Pelinal’s Ferocity is no longer necessary to benefit from the buff to Alliance Point, XP, and Tel Var Stone gains. These useful bonuses are now passively shared to all those competing during Whitestrake’s Mayhem.

Something to note: The Golden will not be offering Monster Masks to customers during Whitestrake’s Mayhem. Additionally, she will only accept Alliance Points in exchange for purchases during this event, not gold (ironically).

Survey These Dev Answers for the Cyrodiil Champions Community Q&A

Check out our answers to the community’s questions concerning the Cyrodiil Champions test PvP campaign.

Access to the Public Test Server for Update 45 is open to all players on PC/Mac, and one of the many features receiving attention is the Cyrodiil Champions PvP test, also known as the Vengeance campaign. This is a preliminary step to ensure functionality is in place, with the full test occurring on live servers at a later date after Update 45 arrives.

In Studio Director Matt Firor’s letter at the end of last year, he touched on how the team will be experimenting a bit more in the name of future change, innovation, and improvement efforts for ESO. One such effort is the Cyrodiil Champions test, and your feedback will be critical to helping us understand what you like, what you don’t like, and ultimately shape the future of ESO.

Cyrodiil Champions is part of an effort to improve performance and stability in ESO’s open-world PvP experience. After its announcement in January, we reached out to the ESO community on both the official ESO forums and Reddit for your questions, and you can now check out our answers via this post on the ESO forums. For more, check out this recent livestream with the devs!

We hope you’re excited for the upcoming battles in Cyrodiil, including this new test campaign now live on the PTS, and later on live servers. For details on the test, check out the 10.30.1 PTS patch notes, and look out for more on Cyrodiil Champions sometime after Update 45 is live. Are you interested in this new PvP test? Fallen Banners & Update 45 Now Live on the Public Test Server

Dive into 2025’s new adventures by helping test Fallen Banners and Update 45 on the PC/Mac Public Test Server!

The Public Test Server (PTS) has now been updated to include both the upcoming Fallen Banners dungeon pack and the Update 45 base-game patch, giving you access to two new dungeons, refreshed starter zones, the features for the Cyrodiil Champions Test campaign, and a host of quality-of-life improvements, including improvements to Craft (green) Champion points!

To access the PTS, go to the Settings menu within the PC/Mac ESO launcher by toggling the “Show Public Test Environment” option. You can then download and access the game client, which also grants you immediate access to the Fallen Banners dungeons to test. As a result, you shouldn't need to purchase it on the test server's Crown Store. Don’t forget to leave feedback and report any bugs you come across by typing “/feedback” or “/bug” in chat. If you want to learn about the features coming in Update 45 or anything else to do with the patch, be sure to check out the preview blog and PTS Patch Notes on the ESO forums.

    Update 45 Preview—Fallen Banners

Learn more about the upcoming Update 45 base-game patch and the new Fallen Banners dungeon DLC.

The Update 45 base-game patch and Fallen Banners dungeon DLC arrives March 10 on PC/Mac and March 25 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While the U45 base-game patch is free for all ESO players, an ESO Plus™ membership is required to access and play the Fallen Banners dungeon DLC.

    Fallen Banners

Kicking off the year’s adventures and challenges, Fallen Banners introduces two new four-player dungeons for you and your team to explore.

    Exiled Redoubt

As the continent-spanning Alliance War continues to ravage Tamriel, the Imperial Battlemage Lucilla needs your help investigating the mysterious disappearances of its soldiers. Join Lucilla in infiltrating the stronghold of the once-proud House Albus and discover a plot that threatens to condemn the people of Cyrodiil to endless war.

Fight for peace in Exiled Redoubt

    Lep Seclusa

The Moth Priest sanctuary of Lep Seclusa is besieged, and the Elder Scroll it protects is threatened. You and your allies must defend the Moth Priests and their precious relic from the sinister Orpheon the Tactician and his army of deserters.

Defend the sanctuary of Lep Seclusa

Both dungeons feature their own unique storylines, characters, challenges (including unique boss battles), and secrets. Complete these dungeons and you’ll also discover unique rewards, including item sets, collectibles, and Achievements available only in these encounters.

As mentioned above, if you wish to tackle these two new Alliance War-themed dungeons, you’ll need an active ESO Plus membership. The dungeon DLC will NOT be available for purchase for crowns at launch.

    Update 45

Arriving in tandem with the dungeon DLC is the Update 45 base-game patch. This free update includes a host of changes and improvements that all ESO players can enjoy.

    Cyrodiil Champions Test Campaign

Update 45 introduces the early stages of the new Cyrodiil Champions test PvP campaign. When playing a Cyrodiil Champions test campaign, you and your fellow players are locked to specific class builds, including abilities, attributes, and items. This test allows us to monitor how the server reacts to simplified abilities, with the goal being to collect data and help us plan for the future of Cyrodiil and abilities.

During this test, seven set Cyrodiil Champion classes are available, and access to some features are blocked, including Crown Store provisions, items not included in the class templates, and more. During a Cyrodiil Champions campaign, all competitors are at equal power levels—it all comes down to skill!

Note that with Update 45, we are only just beginning to test the Cyrodiil Champions campaigns. Expect a full rollout with greater options and a more polished experience in the future.

    Starter Zone Refresh

The starter zones of Betnikh, Stros M’kai, Bleakrock, Bal Foyen, and Khenarthi’s Roost have all undergone a makeover, bringing them more in line visually with the detail of ESO’s recent additions such as West Weald or the Telvanni Peninsula.

These starter zones have received improvements to their terrain transitions, materials and lighting, and atmosphere. Signs and banners have been positioned to better highlight services (such as crafting or banking locations), and lighting has been adjusted to better define important paths and other areas of detail. With the addition of more organic clutter and props, various portions of the zones should feel a little less sparse and a little more lived in—go check them out!

    Quality-of-Life Improvements

This base-game patch also features a host of quality-of-life improvements to the game. This includes an improvement to the initial mount experience by significantly increasing their starting movement speed value (without dramatically increasing their top end speed). The team has also reworked specific Craft (green) Champion stars so they no longer need to be slotted for you to benefit from their effects. Finally, the team has also increased the visibility of the value of Mundus Stone Boons, including reminders as to when and where you can find them.

This is just the start of a series of general improvements to the player experience in ESO. Keep an eye out for even more additions and tweaks like the above throughout this year’s updates.

    A Realm in Chaos

Tamriel is besieged on all sides, and the people of Cyrodiil need heroes, no matter what side of the conflict they are on.
