The Last Spell

Patch 1.1.3.3

Hello Heroes!

In today's update we are only bringing bug fixing to the game, which includes a permanent fix for the Steam Deck issue! We worked hard on this one and you should not experience any more trouble regarding the controller on this platform.

You'll find the full bug fixing details below.

In this update we are also adding in-game analytics to gather statistics that will provide us a deeper understanding about how you are winning, losing and enjoying The Last Spell.

Since the game's launch in 2021, we've relied solely on your written feedback and while we love to read all of your comments, it is sometimes not precise enough for an optimal balancing. With these new game analytics we will get raw data to dissect & study, allowing us to make more informed decisions for future updates and in the end, better improve The Last Spell.

These game analytics will be anonymous and include: how many gold & materials you generate throughout your run, what's your kill rate per skill per weapon, which wave did you fail the most for each map, etc...

If you're uncomfortable about the game analytics, you can turn it off at any moment in the Settings of The Last Spell under the "Other" tab.

Thank you and enjoy your Nights!

Bug fix

Creating the DLCs of The Last Spell

Hello Heroes!

First, thank you so much for your support, comments, feedback, videos, questions and help that you gave us since the launch in Early Access back in 2021! We never thought we would live such an incredible journey with The Last Spell, and that is all thanks to you!

It's been a month since the release of Dwarves of Runenberg DLC, adding a new map, new weapons, new items and… Dwarves. We wanted to talk a bit about our current production process, and our plans for the future.

2023 was an extremely packed year for the team: we released the 1.0 version of The Last Spell after nearly 6 years of hard work for the most venerable members of the team. After a small period of polishing the “last” update of the game, it was time to start thinking about a new project… So some people started working on that while some others started thinking about new content for The Last Spell. Towards the end of the year, we at last started the full scale development of Dwarves of Runenberg with a small dedicated team, bringing some new faces and ideas onboard with us.

We wanted to pack everything we could in the budget we had - as we did for the base game - until the last minute. Of course, a lot of ideas couldn’t make it into the DLC, for example we had a cool design for a Flail weapon which didn’t make it - but we never know, maybe it will show up later…

Of course, when designing DLCs we as developers have to take into account A LOT of parameters. Some ideas sound very cool on paper, but the scope and the changes it would imply make it impossible for us to implement without going bankrupt at the same time. You have to draw a clear line between: this is DLC eligible content, and this belongs to The Last Spell 2 (which is NOT the new game we are working on, sorry!)

So right now, the DLC team is quite efficient and is already starting preliminary work on a second DLC (after a well deserved time of respite). We have the overall idea already secured, and the good thing is that we will be able to take into account the feedback and reviews that you made on the first DLC.

We don’t have any ETA for this second DLC for now, but you can expect something similar in terms of size than the first one. We also have some very exciting, bigger in scope, ideas but we don’t know yet if and when they will come to life.

If everything goes well (fingers crossed!), we’ll continue supporting the game for a few years from now, so keep the reviews and comments rolling to give us strength to carry on!

Let it not be the last dev blog post, we can’t wait to show you what we’re cooking for the future of The Last Spell! 🤘

Dwarves of Runenberg

Three new weapons

Dwarves of Runenberg is adding three exclusive new weapons to the game. These weapons have been created to change the way you play The Last Spell, thanks to the addition of weapons' Perks. Not only will these weapons have unique spells, each one of them will also have a unique Perk:

  • Gauntlet: a magical weapon that morphs from a close range to a long range weapon when a certain threshold is reached
  • War Shield: a melee weapon designed to tank damages before letting you unleash your power as retaliation
  • Cannon: an extremely powerful range weapon paired with a risk of overheating, altering the cost of its abilities

Equip your Heroes with the magical Gauntlet, the long-range Cannon and the powerful WarShield. One new weapon per type of damage, available to all Heroes!

Runenberg

Welcome to Runenberg, a new map of 8 Nights set in the mountains. A gigantic cave will greet you from one side, as the large bridge built by the dwarves will allow monsters to come at you from another with a vast and powerful wave. Get ready, this dwarven map's difficulty will be set between Glenwald and Elderlicht and unique Runestones are located on the map with variable effects (ice, fire, poison).

On the Final Night, hell will let loose, Dwarves Statues will gradually be activated and Corrupted Runestones will randomly appear on the map. As you resist against the horde of monsters crawling and growing bigger each new turn, Dwarves Statues will make things even more difficult for you by empowering the monsters around them and targeting the Corrupted Runestones.

Dwarves

The dwarves are joining the fight! New haircuts, new faces but also new (and small) sizes. Get to know your new friends on the battlefield!

Dwarves have an exclusive Perks collection related to their race as well as one exclusive passive:

  • "Toss me!": Ask your lovely friend standing next to you to throw you across the map in order to effectively slaughter thousands of enemies. Talking about it, you may remember a particular scene between a human and a dwarf doing exactly just that...

Here are a few Perks examples of what you may find in the DLC:

  • Warcry: The more a Dwarf is injured, the louder he shouts, inspiring his comrades to fight that much harder.
  • Look at my Muscles: Dwarves expose their muscles to fight longer... It's a Dwarf thing.
  • Emergency Tunnel: Dwarves tend to jump headlong into battle... But they’re also able to quickly tunnel back to safety.

Dwarves may be smaller, but they are also tougher! This will be reflected upon their stats, as they will have less Movement Speed than humans but in return will gain more Block and more Health Regen.

By starting a run on Runenberg, your team will have at least one dwarf.

On other maps, you'll have a chance to have a dwarf in your starting team. By visiting the Tavern, whichever map you play, you'll get as much chance to have humans as dwarves Heroes.

Stone Medals

These new trinkets allow you to equip brand new Perks specifically created for it. The Perks available on the Stone Medals are all new and won't be available on the Perks page of your Heroes.

Beers

What would Dwarves be without their favourite Beers? Three new consumables are added to the game: Amber, Pilsner and Stout, and each one of those Beers has unique properties.

  • Stout Beer: Increases your Mana, reduces your Health.
  • Amber Beer: Increases your Accuracy, reduces your Damage.
  • Pilsner Beer: Increases your Critical, reduces your Critical Power.

Free Update

New features

In addition to the DLC Dwarves of Runenberg, we're adding some free features for ALL players:

  • Weapons Selection: Before the start of your run, choose which weapons you'd like to wield in it
  • Old Medals: A new type of Trinket using the existing Tier 4 and Tier 5 Perks

QoL

  • Added a tutorial for the "Selection of Weapons UI".
  • "Total Damage" has been changed to "Perk Damage" for better understanding.

Bug Fixes

Perks

  • Fixed "Boom" Perk where the damage is not redistributed on the second target if it is on a trap.
  • Fixed "Poisonous" Perk where the poison is not applied on enemies standing on a trap.
  • Fixed missing action points and several movement points on characters with the Perk "Glass Cannon" activated after a reload.
  • Fixed "Glass Cannon" Perk: now the loss of current life cannot exceed the minimum value of 50.
  • The "Sadist" Perk now applies Opportunism bonuses as soon as the "Poisonous" perk inflicts his effect on one or more targets. Players no longer need to take additional actions to trigger this effect.
  • Fixed a bug on enemies affected by "BOOM!", "Human Ballista", and "Spiky Counter" Perks were not counted towards the "Harvester" Perk's kill count.
  • Fixed the "Relentless" Perk: now the player can no longer gain more movement points than the activation threshold (3).
  • Fixed the "Blood collector" tooltip: now it also displays the actual amount of health regenerated at the end of the turn, taking into account "Health Received".

Others

  • Fixed the randomization hair button in the customization panel.
  • Fixed the Apocalypse tooltip visible in the Omens menu when you hover at the bottom of the screen.
  • Fixed a bug when you played with a controller and destroyed the magic circle with a catapult: the circle animation froze and rendered the cursor immobile.
  • Fixed a bug where it was possible to use the spell "Contamination" on a non-targetable enemy.

Phew, that’s it, the first DLC of The Last Spell is now out! What a ride!

We can’t wait to read your discussions on Steam, Discord & Reddit and discover which new weapon will be your favourite or how many dwarves you were able to toss into battle.

Dwarves of Runenberg: Cannon

Hello Heroes,

Did you read the news? The Last Spell is getting a DLC!

Dwarves of Runenberg is the first DLC coming to The Last Spell, and with it comes multiple additions to the game, including three brand new weapons. Today, we're gonna give you a little more insight about one of them: the Cannon, a ranged weapon with explosive skills and a tendency to overheat due to its instability…

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1105670/view/4111295701225220288

Cannon

The Cannon is a simple ranged weapon, yet filled with enormous firepower. It could easily be in talk for a “weapon of mass destruction” title, but such a destructive tool should always come at a price. Thus, the Cannon demands careful resource management or it might lead you to dire consequences.

Cannon’s Skills

Cannon Ball

It shoots. Hard.

Rocket Jump

Have you ever dreamt of flying? Jump into the melee and unleash chaos upon the monsters.

Mortar

A long distance skill to slow down the horde. It has a high chance to Stun the primary target, and a lower chance to Stun its surrounding monsters.

Armageddon

Turn the air into hellfire with a very large multihit AoE. Probably the most powerful skill ever created by the dwarves.

Weapon perks

With the release of Dwarves of Runenberg, we are introducing Weapon perks, a new way to design and play the weapons at your disposal. Weapon perks are available on the Gauntlet, War Shield and Cannon.

Overheat

The price to pay to access such firepower.

Each skill of the Cannon will generate Heat, determined by the skill’s cost. Upon reaching Heat 7, the Cannon overheats, now requiring Health Points to use its skills in addition to their current cost. At the end of the turn, the Cannon begins to cool down, providing you a brief respite.

When the Cannon is overheating, firing it will trigger an explosion around you, damaging everything around them, monsters and structures alike. The Cannon will always survive the overheating, but your Hero might not.

Now that you know everything about this new weapon, we can't wait to see you using it on the battlefield! The Cannon is one of three weapons available in the upcoming DLC: make sure to wishlist it! Dwarves of Runenberg will be available on April 24th.

Dwarves of Runenberg: War Shield

Hello Heroes,

Did you read the news? The Last Spell is getting a DLC!

Dwarves of Runenberg is the first DLC coming to The Last Spell, and with it comes multiple additions to the game, including three brand new weapons. Today, we're gonna give you a little more insight about one of them: the War Shield, a melee weapon destined to crush your enemies with its devastating blows!

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1105670/view/4111295701225220288

War Shield

The War Shield is a melee weapon designed to tank damages before letting you unleash your power as retaliation. Built by the dwarves, available to everyone. Brace yourself, resist the monsters’ assaults and when it’s your turn, clean the battlefield with a handful of destructive skills. You’re not the pacifist Hero they think you are.

War Shield’s Skills

Breach

Smash down the shield to crush the monsters in front of you. Inflict pain for a limited cost.

Shield Up

Prepare yourself for the impending assault and strike your target to gain Block. Simple as that.

Moving Wall

Utilize this skill to reposition yourself and apply a debuff to the monsters struck by it, reducing their damage output.

Walls of Pain

A devastating skill in AoE to wipe all your enemies from the battlefield. The screams of your enemies can even be heard as you crush their souls.

Weapon perks

With the release of Dwarves of Runenberg, we are introducing Weapon perks, a new way to design and play the weapons at your disposal. Weapon perks are available on the Gauntlet, War Shield and Cannon.

Perfect Guard

Get revenge from your enemies with Perfect Guard: the more you get hit, the higher your damage will be on the next turn. However, this increased power will gradually decrease with each subsequent skill you use. Additionally, avoiding damage during a turn will halve your current bonus.

Now that you know everything about this new weapon, we can't wait to see you using it on the battlefield! The War Shield is one of three weapons available in the upcoming DLC: make sure to wishlist it! Dwarves of Runenberg will be available on April 24th.
